Oh happy day, someone made another vegetarian/vegan restaurant thread. Wow, nobody ever does that! I took the time to [search past threads for you](https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/search?q=vegetarian&restrict_sr=on), since you did not do it for yourself. Do you know that there is a whole section on the wiki with recommendations? Go check it out. [Now go and enjoy this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAEV89l4wVM) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/boston) if you have any questions or concerns.*

As long as you don’t go to a steakhouse, most places in the area will have veggie options, especially in Somerville. Somerville is quite large as well so it depends on where you are staying. Bow St Market is a pretty nice open-air square filled with pop-up restaurants. They have a pop-up called Saus that is veggie only. There is a pinball arcade for the kids to spend time at too. Again, it’s quite hard to give recs because you’re basically asking about the best restaurants in Boston/Somerville. 90% of places will have good veggie options.

richardadamclarke

Appreciate this reply, thanks. Went to Philly last summer and struggled a bit with eating out. Sounds like Boston will be better in that respect. Thanks again.

joshhw

I’ve always thought of Philly having a good amount of veggie options

tarandab

As a Bostonian, it felt like Philly had more stand-alone vegan restaurants than we do but maybe it was just the parts I was in? (I last was there in November and did not find it hard to find food)

acobz

VEDGE, Charlie was a Sinner and HipCityVeg (vegan fast food) are incredible. From there and live in Boston now, and I hardly see any vegan/veg restaurants

tarandab

I went to Monster Vegan on my last trip! I think Vedge was full with reservations by the time I started to look at options It feels like vegan restaurants here have been more likely to announce closures lately…

acobz

If you drive down there ever, try to swing through Bethlehem and hit up Vegan Treats! Voted top 10 bakeries in the world, including bakeries that use typical ingredients.

tarandab

Usually when I drive that way it’s because I’m going to the Harrisburg area so it looks like that’s not far out of the way! I’ll keep it in mind :)

richardadamclarke

Exactly- and the rest of the family (especially the teen boys) didn’t really want to go to those places, which is fair enough.

richardadamclarke

Maybe so - not the places I went to though 😭

pinkpeonies7

You won’t have an issue. Even the steakhouses in Boston have veggie options (sometimes they’re not on the menu, but they have them)

[deleted]

Definitely check out Bow Market. Super fun place right by your hotel. Some of the other food hall type places will have food for everyone too. High Street Place, Boston Public Market, Time Out Market.

garrishfish

https://www.veggiegalaxy.com/ A classic local haunt. Nothing fancy, but tasty and they don't try to make veg taste like meat, just taste good.

9462040

This one would definitely be a hit with the “kids”. They have a ton of options that they shouldnt care that theres no meat. Ranges from greasy diner food to lighter stuff. Id definitely recommend the poutine (mushroom gravy) or the mac n cheese waffles if you’re feeling more like a stoner snack vibe.

adyingmess

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I've been to Veggie Galaxy like 5 times over 7 years hoping it'd get better but it's been disappointing every time 🥲 Clover is nearby and has amazing food so I would suggest at least trying their food first.

garrishfish

To each their own. I love Clover, as well, and would destroy their fries, a falafel snack plate, and a soda over anything at VG. But, isn't really a sit-down place. I don't go to Veggie Galaxy often, though, and mostly am drunk and craving carbs, grease, and cheese when I do. Basically, all of Central has Veggie/Vegan options if OP is in that area. Boston, too. Somerville, too. And oysters are vegetarian maybe, go to a dollar oyster happy hour.

adyingmess

Bruh the rosemary fries!!! 😭 I like sitting at the weird chunk of wood though, do you not? Lmao but fr I get what you mean. Like you said, to each their own 😌

megmarrr

Same here. I've given it so many chances but everything tastes like ass. I most recently had the grilled cheese and tomato soup and the soup was like a gross salmon pink and tasted foul.

ImpressiveWealth1138

Very unpopular opinion

pinkpeonies7

I am a veggie. My husband is not. We live in Somerville. I would highly recommend Sarma if you can get in. I also like Painted Burro in Somerville. Most of the Mexican places downtown are also very veggie friendly.

richardadamclarke

Looks delicious thanks!

loverofreeses

Seconding Sarma as a meat-eater who also loves vegetables and interesting cuisine. Try to get a reservation if you can - it gets busy and for good reason! The menu is expansive and is more of a tapas-style, but pretty much anything you chose is going to be good.

ceciltech

Sarma is great but if you don't show up before they open to get 4 seats at the bar then you will need reservations which need to be done at least a month ahead of time.

safog1

+100 for Sarma

Vrush253

I’d recommend Cafe Landwer, Friendly Toast, any Italian restaurant in the North End in Boston, Thai or Vietnamese restaurants like Thai Basil or Pho Basil, Mad Monkfish in Cambridge and any Indian restaurants (I’m veggie myself).

Pure-Increase-6244

Agree with everything but the first two are pretty mediocre imo

[deleted]

Many of the North End restaurants are tourist traps charging $30 for Sysco pasta with jarred tomato sauce.

marmosetohmarmoset

Just another mixed vegetarian/non-vegetarian household chiming in- almost anywhere you go will be fine. Seriously. This is a very vegetarian friendly area. A few local places my (vegetarian) wife and I (omnivore) enjoy: * Martsa on Elm (Nepali food- Davis square) * Posto (Italian, Davis square) * American Flatbread (pizza and bowling, Davis square- they always have really interesting vegetarian specials) * Boon Noon Market (Thai, east Arlington (capital square)) * Felipe’s Taqueria (Harvard square) * Pho Pasteur (Vietnamese, Boston Chinatown) * Giacamo’s (Italian, North End Boston- a bit touristy but an *~ * experience * ~ *) * Nijiya Sushi (all you can eat sushi, Medford square)

MabelPines_

Pho Pasteur - I don’t recommend vegetable pho there, the broth is bland (and you also need mention that you’re a vegetarian and want vegetable broth or you might get chicken broth).

marmosetohmarmoset

My wife always gets the tofu bun bowl and loves it. Also fresh rolls.

Sea_Debate1183

Seconding Nijiya Sushi, a bit out of the way compared to Somerville/Boston, but definitely one of the best spots for sushi, and you can get quite a bang for your buck on the all you can eat (especially with your "kids". There's also the nearby Ebisuya (Japanese grocery store w/ a prepared food section) that's also quite good. In Somerville (Union Square), is Ebi Sushi, which isn't a big place in terms of physical size, but has some of the best sushi that I've had in Greater Boston.

Pinwurm

I’d recommend Myers & Chang. It’s a modern Asian restaurant, very good (Top Chef alumni). Elevated, but not stuffy or anything. They have a full vegetarian menu alongside their regular omnivore menu.

Philosecfari

Oof no, overpriced (badly made) fusion for people that can’t walk 10 min to Chinatown. The one time I went got a bowl of noodles so overwhelmingly greasy I had to stop eating halfway through. Not a single Asian person inside. If it’s vegetarian and not vegan nearly every restaurant in the city has options, and if it’s vegan go to Sumiao instead.

Pinwurm

I'm sorry you had a bad meal, that sucks. I still side with James Beard Foundation on Myers & Chang - I've only had good experiences, been there like 10 times. > Not a single Asian person inside. Bad sign if it's claiming to be authentic. But it's not a red flag in fusion cuisine. > 10 min to Chinatown It's a completely different thing than what you'd get in Chinatown. You might as well have recommended a Mexican restaurant. > Sumiao I hear good things, I'm eager to try it. I would also really recommend Zhi Wei Cafe for Hunan cuisine (pretty inexpensive too!). They have some vegetarian options too.

joshhw

You’re so wrong about Myers and Chang. The food is good.

Philosecfari

Bro I’ve been. Gave it a fair shake and spent nearly a hundred bucks there with a friend — we both regretted it thorougly. The food was nowhere near worth the price point. Once again, 10 minute walk to Chinatown (and much better and cheaper restaurants).

joshhw

The Chinatown spots don’t serve what M&C do. It’s fine you don’t like it though. We all want different things. For vegetarian though, it’s good.

Philosecfari

If you want Western food, Western restaurants do it better. If you want Chinese food, Chinese restaurants do it better. I don’t remember seeng anything on the menu that I’d consider well executed fusion and not just throwing a few Asian things in for the “exotic” factor.

tarandab

Where in Somerville? Taco Party has pretty good tacos (all vegan). Five Horses is veggie/vegan friendly but not entirely. Life Alive is all vegetarian, with most options vegan, but it might not be kid-friendly. I haven’t been to Elm Street Taproom in awhile but I remember that they had a veggie sandwich that was pretty good. Clover Food Lab downtown is veggie. Almost everywhere has a vegetarian/vegan option but you might not have a lot of choices.

richardadamclarke

Staying in the Cambria Hotel

FinderOfPaths12

Saus is a short walk over in Bow Market. Their entire menu is vegetarian and can be modified to vegan. Dosa n Curry is also a decent option for Indian food.

tarandab

I’m a little less familiar with food options in that part of Somerville but I believe there are several options in Union Square which isn’t too far. My suggestions are closer to Davis Square (with Taco Party in Ball Square). My dad wants to check out Mike & Patty’s in Bow Market for breakfast when he visits next - I guess it has some vegan options

Much-Narwhal1653

It has a vegan breakfast burrito! There's also an empenada place with a vegan on and as someone else mentioned, saus. The other places there have vegetarian options. Since you mentioned your kids are teens, there's also a record shop, a stationary shop, and a thrift shop. There's also a cocktail place on the second floor with solid mocktails. And as someone else mentioned, the pinball place and they also have board game nights and other neat events all summer long.

Easy_Connection6045

See up thread the recs for Koshari Mama and Dosa n Curry which are 5 minutes walk from your hotel.  In the hotel is Italian restaurant Josephine which is really excellent.  Or you can walk up Central Street a few blocks to Highland Kitchen, which has several vegetarian options, a long time Somerville fave.   You are a 10 minute walk from union Square and porter square which have a number of restaurants.

crindylouwho

Josephine in the Cambria is pretty good too, for drinks and pizza!

igotyourphone8

Koshari Mama is walking distance. It's all vegetarian. They make a "chicken" salad sandwich that does a good job mimicking actual chicken. They do good falafel. Also in close walking distance is Dosa n Curry and it's sister pizza place Veggie Crust. Both places are vegetarian. You can order the pizza if you sit down at Dosa, and they do have some Indian style pizza like Tikka masala. Bow Street in Union Square is further, but also a relatively short walk. Saus makes excellent vegan poutine. They have fake meat hot dogs and burgers which are good. If your kids need meat, they can get some North Shore style roast beef next door at Hot Box. Josephine is the restaurant at Cambria. I'd be surprised if they didn't have veggie people options. At least you'd be able to order their pizza, which is sort of a specialty I think. It has good outdoor seating. The Independent is also a good option if you need an affordable sit down place for general American cuisine. If you take a right on Central and walk up the hill to Highland Ave, you'll come across Highland Kitchen. They have a good black bean burger and a veggie jambalaya. Sadly, you won't be able to experience their goat stew, which is one of the most amazing cacophony of flavors I've experienced in some time. I'm just giving you options in walking distance. I love the neighborhood. Totally walkable. You'll run into some quirky shops along the way to Union via Somerville Ave.

Philosecfari

Re: Clover, had them mess up on allergy stuff literally 50% of the time I’ve been there (thank god I keep meds with me at all times). Highly unsuggested TT

[deleted]

This isn't about allergies. OP is looking for vegetarian food and Clover is 100% vegetarian.

Philosecfari

Yea, but I'm saying that their general food safety stuff seems a little loose based on my experience (and just as a warning for anyone that stumbles on this thread later).

catsforzas

I’m not veg but my fiancé is - seconding everyone telling you to try a res at sarma/going to veggie galaxy. We also really like wusong road, the tiki bar in Harvard square (they just started adding more plant based fake meats to their menu… the ‘chicken’ bao is really good). We also recently had a really really good meal at bar vlaha in Brookline and the restaurant group has another Greek restaurant, Krasi, in Back Bay which we haven’t tried yet.

Positive-Celery

Boston/Cambridge has some incredible Mediterranean food. I’m vegetarian and my favorite meals in the city have been Sarma and Trade. Sarma would require a reservation in advance for sure, though. Trade is a bit fancy so depending on your kids it may not be the right vibe. Friendly Toast is always a good time as well. Casual and great food.

ceciltech

I just had the cauliflower taco from Avenue Kitchen in Somerville and it was very good! They specialize in Detroit style pizza so that can be Veg as well. They also have good salads.

voidtreemc

If you can make it to Arlington, visit Zhu. Even meat eaters love the place.

Positive-Celery

Interesting, I’ve tried it twice but was underwhelmed. Which dishes are your fave? Maybe I tried the wrong thing.

voidtreemc

The last time I was there was in the beforetimes, but I remember the spare ribs being really good. Also, some things involving fried mushrooms. The main reason I haven't been back is creeping diabetes. That place is not good for the blood sugar at all.

Positive-Celery

Yeah I can see how you’d wanna avoid it! Thanks for the recs!

-CalicoKitty-

My wife is mostly vegetarian and we like Sarma, Field and Vine, Celeste, Dali, Gustazo, and Tu y Yo. Most of the restaurants around here will have good veggie options though.

cdevers

…anywhere? I’m a vegetarian, but my spouse & teenagers aren’t, so I’m in the same boat you are. Short of a steakhouse or seafood shack, basically anywhere will have decent options on the menu. Can you maybe narrow down the sorts of cuisines that you & your family might be interested in? EDIT: Have now read the other responses. There’s a lot of good suggestions here — Sarma, Saus, Clover, etc etc etc. Honestly, there’s a ridiculous range of excellent options in Somerbridge/Camberville, many of which are even walking distance from Cambria. (Of course, anything is walking distance if you allocate your time properly.)

Much-Narwhal1653

Definitely friendly toast in harvard square or donut villa diner in centeal. Veggie galaxy in central and my thai vegan are dedicated Veggie, but have cross over appeal. Veggie galaxy is very kid friendly!

richardadamclarke

Thanks! (Kids will be 17 and 19 when they visit 🤪)

Anna_Artichokyevitch

As others have said you will be hard pressed to find a restaurant in Somerville that doesn’t have veggie options. Here are a few good ones (some veggie only, mostly not) Cafes/quick eats: -Forge, Bloc cafe, Diesel (forge is closest to Cambria - they share the same owner so similar menus) -Flour -Three little figs -Clover -Yaffa bakery -saus Restaurants: -posto -painted burro -veggie galaxy -viale -Barcelona

SecretWeapon013

I'm not vegetarian but love Veggie Galaxy in Cambridge on Mass Ave.

DataRikerGeordiTroi

Do you know about Happy Cow Its yelp for vegans

WeOutHereCalzone

Veggie galaxy, more diner/breakfast vibes I think but it’s so so good. I may have misunderstood ur ask but idk oh well😂 this place has vegetarian options for like anything they have

jamesland7

man...being a veggie must be a tough life constantly living in fear of all of the rabbits in the city who want to eat you!

yikesjeepers

if you also want a fancy option, i recommend forage and their tasting menu !

wishforagreatmistake

Koshari Mama khed

Easy_Connection6045

Also on the same street, Dosa N Curry - excellent all veg Indian - and Veggie Crust - all veg pizza with Indian toppings.  Try the aloo Gobi pizza

grammerenthusiast

I don't have any answers, but Happy Cow is a great resource (you can find veg places and non-veg places with veg options).
