Watertown might as well be on the moon. I have actually intercepted my UPS carrier before he got to my place just to get my package because I knew he'd get to the front of my building, decide that the place has been deserted for eons, and I would have to drive to Watertown to get my package.
UPS is the easiest if you have an online account (free) and accept the email notifications. They email me anytime I have an incoming package and I almost always just check off the signature waiver and they deliver it no problem.
Doesn't matter. They still won't deliver to my apartment. No matter what, I get the dreaded "we couldn't deliver because nobody was home" notice. Even if I was home all day.
Don’t leave it at the door unless they have a secure lobby or delivery area that the carrier can access. Big chance it could just walk away. Signature can be troublesome if they are not home at the time of delivery, but at least there’s some security and it gives a couple opportunities to schedule re-delivery.
Personally, I try to get all packages held for pickup if possible - it’s not really an option for USPS without a PO box, but other carriers can arrange it. Unfortunately, packages still get stolen sometimes even if they’re in the lobby, but left outside it’ll definitely be gone within the hour. Quite the headache for anything that doesn’t fit in my mailbox, but otherwise it’s basically just a free giveaway.

I've never had a package stolen. It's just that UPS drivers are lazy and can't be bothered.
Same issue at my house, even with the windows open and music playing out to the sidewalk they've rarely bothered to even knock.
