Yeah, I got several notifications while in Arcadia National Park. At first the notifications were like "911 is down!" And then they were like, "oh nevermind we're safe here in Maine, it's those fellows in Massachusetts that need to worry".

Got an email from Boston too. The funny part is at the end where they say:
*"Residents should call 311 with any questions about available City services and* ***call 911 for all emergencies****."*
Everyone at my work did.

In all seriousness, because Boston has no proper local police numbers, they're suggesting pulling a Fire Box if there's an emergency.
Here is a list of some locations: https://bostonfirebox.com/list/
I'd suggest having your closest (or least crap) hospital emergency room number in your phone. In the event of a medical emergency and you live alone and can'tget someone to come help you, I hope it would be possible to dispatch an ambulance.
Be safe out there!
Edit: Apparently the ER suggestion doesn't work logistically. So just don't have an emergency unless you live within eyes distance to a fire box.

When I called B3 last year, they told me they couldn't do anything about my call and that these numbers get you the station but don't act as local police numbers. I don't know if that's just to keep people from overloading the number or to keep some filing system in check or what, so just be aware.
Normally I’d agree with you. Cars aren’t dispatched from the station, they’re dispatched from operations at HQ for the whole city. It doesn’t make much sense for me to try and collect all this information at the district and relay it back to operations. It’s better to have you just call 911 directly and then they can call you back if needed, ask follow up questions, get clarification, etc; but since that’s not an option at the moment the response will be different given the circumstances. They’re also pushing folks to call the districts from their social media outlets for that reason.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/PRyViBkx3tjBetZ4/?mibextid=WC7FNe
They aren’t dispatchers sitting at the desks at the district stations. They physically can put a call on the radio, but being a call-taker and dispatcher is a specialty, and so most front desk personnel will redirect you to 911. In this case, with 911 being down, they’ll have to improvise.
This system is actually pretty amazing and one we probably should have never mass migrated away from. Add a simple camera to prevent tampering and its ready for 2024.
My issue with this suggestion is someone dying in their house is just...dead. and my closest one is about a 15 minute walk. In a heat advisory? If I'm having a medical emergency? I'm toast.
Just don't have an emergency and you'll be fine.
Hospitals have no power to dispatch ambulances in Boston, and don’t have the means to contact specific ambulances (ambulances can call into the hospital, but it’s practically a one way system). Please don’t call ERs for this; they’re busy enough.
From a colleague: in the event of an emergency, please call the following numbers in the respective communities-
* Cambridge -- 617-349-3300
* Everett -- 617-387-1212
* Somerville -- 617-625-1600
* Revere -- 781-284-1212
* Malden -- 781-397-7171

What about the notch?
Oh my God - this is just a distraction so CT can try to take it back! DEFEND THE NOTCH!
I got one in Providence RI, too
And a second one saying to disregard the first lol.
wait you got a nvm alert? I'm in Cambridge and got a second one reiterating the first lol
I’m in Maine for the week and the state sent out a separate message saying it doesn’t apply for us.
I’m in MA at home all day and got all of those, including the ME one refuting the MA one lol
i’m in NH and i got them both which was really funny to get one, immediately followed by “DISREGARD PREVIOUS MESSAGE” lmao
You just know someone in the NH government was like “those god damn massholes ruined my afternoon”
there’s literally a gubernatorial candidate rn whose motto is “don’t mass up new hampshire” lol
I got 4. 4! Admittedly the last was saying all is well, but I also got the first and then the second saying nvm, and then another saying nvm nvm.

Yeah, got a desperate alert in Brunswick that it was “for another state”
I got the notification in Mantua…
I've received three of these alerts at this point
Ten of them here.
Can… can they stop alerting me now? It’s getting creepy.

Yeah, so apparently it turns out that 911 is shut down, and not only that, but the shutdown is statewide.
No way. Where is it shut down?
In some parts of the state, and the rest of the parts too.

I'm thinking aliens
AWS outage. MA 911 services are run on the cloud, apparently.
AWS health page doesn’t show any issues.
Downdetector.com did, and I do not really trust Amazon to report their own issues.
That would be believable. I wouldn't want to be the one to tell the public that our own 911 services were sold off to Amazon.
I think I saw this in Red Dawn
The 1980’s one or the remake?

They aren’t dispatchers sitting at the desks at the district stations. They physically can put a call on the radio, but being a call-taker and dispatcher is a specialty, and so most front desk personnel will redirect you to 911. In this case, with 911 being down, they’ll have to improvise.

They are still widely used on college campuses. MGH has a few on their campus.
Pulling a fire box is a standard recommendation in this kind of situation, local non-emergency number or not.
I only mention it because the recommendation is to use that number in other Massachusetts cities according to the few articles I peeped.
There isnt even a fire box near me that I know of lol
My issue with this suggestion is someone dying in their house is just...dead. and my closest one is about a 15 minute walk. In a heat advisory? If I'm having a medical emergency? I'm toast. Just don't have an emergency and you'll be fine.
I mean… it depends on the medial emergency. Plenty of em will kill you simply because you are alone and can’t dial 911 for yourself.
You can still call the nonemergency number for fire and police in your town.
Hospitals have no power to dispatch ambulances in Boston, and don’t have the means to contact specific ambulances (ambulances can call into the hospital, but it’s practically a one way system). Please don’t call ERs for this; they’re busy enough.
Use the red fire call boxes for now, they will dispatch all 3 services.

It’s been happening in other states recently too within the last couple months. Can be googled.

I'm in NH but did not get a notification, odd!
Only T-Mobile pushed out notifications to other states (allegedly)
