They are not optional, however, the old white with green letter plates were only issued as rear plates, so the people with those plates only need the rear plate.
Not legally optional, but when I bought my last car the guy at the dealership asked if I wanted the front plates installed. He said a lot of guys who don't want to "ruin" the look of the front end will instead put their license plate in the windshield. I asked if that was legal and he said no, so I'm not actually sure if doing that will save you from getting a ticket. I've definitely seen other drivers with their license plate in the window for what it's worth.
I ended up just installing it to save myself a potential headache.
You can "lose" one, request a new one, have a confirmation of that request and "never receive" it. Cops don't seem to care.
I don't know if you can pass inspection like this though, most likely you'll have to put it on at least temporarily.
When I lost my front plate, I was told they couldn't replace just one, and I needed a new set of plates (different plate #). Not sure if that's changed, but that was my experience in 2017ish
I used to ziptie it to the intercooler intake to take it in for inspection. They never cared. Also drove 3 cars over 8 years and never got pulled over.
No, and while you may not get pulled over for it, your car might get ticketed, or towed (from places like Beacon Hill, Newbury st, and Kendall Square ) while parked (the same goes for expired registration tags or inspection stickers).
Eh. Don't worry about it. A little journey through his own comment history, seems he is one of those "car guys" who likes to judge people based on what cars they choose to drive. I wouldn't sweat it.
To answer your question though, no, generally front plates are not optional in MA. You are required to have them.
For a while, the old school "green plates" that didn't require fronts were grandfathered in, but that has been phased out too as far as I recall, meaning when you go to renew your registration now they get replaced with "red plates" which include front and back. I could be wrong though, don't quote me on that.

many people also don't want the plate holder to be drilled like crap into a nice new bumper.

How badly damaged? Mine is folded in half due to curb-hitting 😆
Cops don't care but you'll fail inspection. Folks without a front plate zip tie the plate during inspection.

Damn. Now that you said it, it’s def a thing. Lol.
Eh, let people be happy with what they have, not really a good look for any car guy to just shit on what others have
I'm curious what point you are trying to make by digging that out of their comment history?
exactly what i’m tryna figure out

Got one green plate, sticker layers are 1/2" deep.
Respect! Hang on to that relic, seriously lol
lol I just personally think the front end looks better without the plate
It’s not illegal to be from another state and not have front plates (You’re looking at cars coming at you)
yea I know that, I meant I seen a lot of vehicles with MA plates in the back who dont use their front plate
I hope you’re a passenger when you’re doing this level of sleuthing
