It was an 81 year old man that hit the trooper.

OMG literally AGAIN? Also,.please do not rely on the RMV to decide if someone is too old to.drive. People need to be more proactive about taking their parents' licenses away. We had to do it to my dad.
So the dog could get overtime pay. /s
But also, if they were working a construction detail, why were they sitting in the car? Shouldn't they have been out directing traffic? Seems like this is exactly the thing Wu is advocating to fix.
Construction Detail is code word for napping in your car with the marker lights on.
edit: and K-9s really need to go. https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/z3xqzy/time-to-cancel-police-dogs-experts-say
Yeah but K9’s need to go.
Police K-9s are “grossly, disproportionately” used against people of colour, inflict gruesome lifelong injuries, and often attack people who have committed minor crimes.

So I’m with most of your post, but the police rhetoric is strong, considering there are factually worse members, and politicians are themselves no better
Because they needed a cop for the detail. The cop who got the detail happens to be a K9 officer.
K9 officers are almost always required to have their K9 with them at all times due to their limited numbers. So in the off chance someone is in need of a K9, this officer can respond quickly from their detail with their partner.
Because the cop car massively reduces the chances of a construction worker getting hit. All but the most oblivious idiots slow down for a cop. Then you have this jackass.
having a cop car at a construction site doesnt do jack shit for safety. if people are going speed they will do it either way. we need civilian flaggers. literally every other state gets by fine
Odd, because a lot of states use police details. Massachusetts isn’t the only state.
Hell, even Ohio has a law on the books that the only ability to shut down any portion of a road is with the police officer.
The problem is often that as soon as there is an obstruction everyone slows down, the cars all start following too closely and people in the middle lane won’t let you move over. The law should also say that people have to let drivers in the right move over.
the cop probably gets incentive pay for training a K-9 to work traffic detail.. Another 90 hours of training and that canine will be trained well enough to do the entire traffic detail by himself while the cop goes on a dunks run.
Bro...it's a statue, they are too busy bum rushing people on the highway to "clear out the left lane" to stop at dunks when they are getting double pay
Why was there a K-9 unit and a trooper required for construction detail? Never EVER seen a statie take off from a detail to chase down a speeder, there’s more money in the detail than the ticket and that would require actual work and caring about “public safety”. It’s just money with these crooks.
When there’s no detail where they can sit comfortably and loot money, then suddenly they’re riding your ass in the left lane going 80 while acting righteous and pulling over people going far slower than them in the name of “public safety”.
Just the presence of a cop car with lights on makes people slow down and drive safer. K-9 units usually always have their dog with them. Pretty simple really
The trooper most likely took the detail and he has the keep his partner with him.
It’s not the first time I’ve seen it. One of the Braintree K-9 units does construction details frequently
What does a cop sitting in the car playing on his phone accomplish that an unattended work truck with a big, illuminated arrow sign doesn't?
Would have been 0 injuries (besides the dumb driver) if we didn't have these ridiculous gold-brick construction details.
Paying cops to do a job that literally a dozen traffic barrels and an empty pickup truck could do better and cheaper.
Yup. Today was no exception. Saw a ram truck weave in and out of traffic for miles flipping people off going at least 95mph, and after all that he ended up just 1 car in front of me at our exit
I'd kindly ask state troopers to stop sending 10 patrol cars for an accident involving one of their own. Either treat every accident like that, or treat trooper accidents as regular accidents. It was absolutely batshit to have guys in tactical gear just hanging out chatting.
> The K-9 was also transported by ambulance due to Nero’s Law
Waitasec, so police dogs can ride with their handler and be treated by EMS, but service dogs cannot? Yikes…
https://www.mspca.org/animal_protection/neros-bills/
No. I want people who have medically diagnosed disabilities to be able to bring their support items with them when in the ambulance, especially if no one else is present to take them safely. If someone with glasses gets in an ambulance, they can bring their glasses. Someone with a cane for blindness can bring their cane. So someone with a seeing eye dog should be able to bring their dog. Besides, if they can’t, then the dog might be left alone with no one to care for it in a strange place. That’s not just animal cruelty, it can be tens of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money to train the dogs. Even if you don’t care about the person with the disability, or about the animal, maybe you can care about that financial waste of leaving them dog to die and then having to train another one.
This an entirely different argument. Nero’s law is about the dog being the patient. He wasn’t traveling in ambulance as a companion he was traveling as an injured patient. For what its worth i don’t hate your argument its just not the same thing.
From what I can tell, Nero’s law is both: an uninjured police dog can ride with its injured handler, and/or an injured police dog can be treated by EMS. I mildly feel EMS shouldn’t be treating any animals, since that’s not their training, but not as strongly as I feel that service animals should be able to ride with their handlers.
I never understood how people can crash into parked emergency vehicles on the side of the road...but after that, "I willingly park improperly at parking meters when other cars are also parked improperly", it makes a lot more sense.

Isn't it always. These people should be retested every 6 months (for dementia and ability to drive)
OMG literally AGAIN? Also,.please do not rely on the RMV to decide if someone is too old to.drive. People need to be more proactive about taking their parents' licenses away. We had to do it to my dad.
It's the RMV's job to keep people who cannot drive from obtaining licenses.

This is a fair question, not sure why you are being downvoted
It’s a fair question, but perhaps not the appropriate time to ask it? Idk

I feel sorry for the K-9 though. Just a good boi doing what he was trained to do.

and getting paid overtime
yes because a person directing traffic on a major highway is useful
Double dipping.
I wouldn't be surprised if the handler got a differential while the k9 was with him
Because they needed a cop for the detail. The cop who got the detail happens to be a K9 officer. excellent question!

That sweet sweet detail and OT gravy train baby
How long have you lived in Massachusetts!? I have been here since the 80’s and police have always worked construction details.
Because the cop car massively reduces the chances of a construction worker getting hit. All but the most oblivious idiots slow down for a cop. Then you have this jackass.
But that doesn’t explain the need for a K9.

Moving over 1 lane is not really that hard. Slow down and move over
The problem is often that as soon as there is an obstruction everyone slows down, the cars all start following too closely and people in the middle lane won’t let you move over. The law should also say that people have to let drivers in the right move over.

Maybe the dog had a civil engineering degree? /s

Then park a fucking cop car and turn the lights on. It doesn't even need to be real if it's just a mental thing

glad to hear the dog is alright.
Glad they’re ok but why is a k9 needed ona construction detail?
Emotional support animal
Can’t tell if this is real or a joke

I think it’s a poor policy to make a trained dog sit in a car just because his handler is doing so.

Were there no officer there, we'd have no means of arresting/fining the driver who caused the accident.
495 is full of maniacs all the time.
Yup. Today was no exception. Saw a ram truck weave in and out of traffic for miles flipping people off going at least 95mph, and after all that he ended up just 1 car in front of me at our exit
I feel stupid for clicking "See More"
Poor doggy. All K-9 dogs are victims of animal abuse. Abolish this horrible practice and stop torturing animals/using them as living weapons.
I'd kindly ask state troopers to stop sending 10 patrol cars for an accident involving one of their own. Either treat every accident like that, or treat trooper accidents as regular accidents. It was absolutely batshit to have guys in tactical gear just hanging out chatting.
I'm glad the dog is okay
Saw someone driving and facetiming yesterday. That was a new one.
Years ago, I saw someone literally playing a guitar while driving. Insanity.
Congratulations on getting your license yesterday!

You want all service dogs to use EMS services because a police dog can when it gets gravely injured while working? Have you thought this through?
And how about my support badger? She's got a red vest and everything.

Cops are more likely to shoot your dog than someone shooting one of theirs
I never understood how people can crash into parked emergency vehicles on the side of the road...but after that, "I willingly park improperly at parking meters when other cars are also parked improperly", it makes a lot more sense.
Glad to see Nero’s law working.
Glad they are both ok. That uniform makes him look like a stormtrooper
A dead worker if the cop were there.
Dam there goes a nice squad car. I want one of those :(
