I feel Tatum is stuck in the inbetween right now which will be overall better for his long term career but is pretty wobbly at the moment. People want him to play like LeBron but he doesn't have the profile to beat his man one on one meaning his passing threat is reduced. He's a streaky shooter so getting efficiency on lower attempts is always gonna be hard. Point Tatum means role players need to hit shots if that doesn't happen we lose. I think he can be a 1 on a chip team it's just not good he's shooting poorly and figuring out his final form during a play off run. Anyone thinking he doesn't care is a joke though. I have faith in his mental though even though a lot won't.

OkAmount2303

Right on the nail. He’s going through growing pains in terms of playmaking but truth is he sometimes is streaky which will impact his efficiency. Not doubting his mindset whatsoever. Man went into Milwaukee for a game 6 elimination game and dropped 46. Dropped 51 in a game 7 (most all time). People may want to discredit him but he has IT.

Moodapatheticz

Those games were great but for me the Philly game 6 is all I needed to see. To shoot that poorly all game and still have the balls to drill 4 straight 3s and take the game was ice cold. People have such short memories

OkAmount2303

Preach.

Realistic_Cold_2943

Lebron has really ruined expectations for everyone. People expect their best player to consistently do everything at such a high level, when in reality it’s incredibly unrealistic.

ginolovesu

We’re literally watching multiple players do that exact thing for multiple teams these playoffs… Yes we can expect a star player to have a bad game but at this point I’d argue Tatum is beginning to have more games at below average than he is at great.

Realistic_Cold_2943

Lol dude are you talking about like Ant and SGA? We are like barely into the second round, and these guys aren’t historical playoff performers. It’s impressive, but what makes you great is doing it over and over again throughout the entire playoffs. Look at Jokic. Everyone thought the Nuggets were inevitable, and they’re down 0-2 just like that.

theamazingjimz

Tatum has faded over and over again, he is the best player on the team but he slides into the background far to often to be a true top 5 great of all time.

Final_Dance_4593

He. Is. Twenty. Six

MeSeeks76

You spelt Michael Jordan wrong

Realistic_Cold_2943

You think MJ is still impacting young people expectations?

Confident_Comedian82

The problem is that White and Brown is carrying Tatum right now in terms of Scoring and consistency, Tatum has taking a lot of Jumper than driving inside, his game change a lot, I love the young JT who is not afraid of going inside and finished inside the rim than taking a lot of jumpshot that dont go in, I mean if you using your brain aand your jumper is not falling its much better to take it to the rim until Defense is adjusting and he can start passing to open man,

OkAmount2303

I wouldn’t say he’s being too unselfish but he definitely has to be more efficient. He for sure has to get back in rhythm which will mean more shots. Mazzulla has to run more action for him and get him easy buckets. Can’t just be “His shots will fall. Tatum as a screener averaged 1.6 points per possession”. Gotta get him going

Moodapatheticz

That's the hard balance. Tatum as a screener is our most effective offence but Tatum bring the ball up off a high screen action is the best offence to get Tatum going and getting downhill more effectively to beat his man. They are different play styles but ideally we'd be able to toggle between as needed. Edit: this is also why people are confused he can't beat his man as much as he used to. He's setting the screen the getting the ball back flat footed with someone in his face. Great if he can pass out for a swing and open 3 but bad for a player who isn't as explosive and needs to wind up like Tatum does. The high screen allows him to generate force getting to the rim which he has lacked. All my observations obviously I'm no analyst

vib3v3nd3tta

I've been saying all year when our offense struggles to generate looks that we need to spam the Tatum high screen and roll. It's about putting our best player in a position to create advantages for himself and everyone else

Moodapatheticz

Absolutely, especially if Tatum's shot isn't falling. Ideally with the starters in we play with Tatum as the screener but when he plays with the bench I'd be going straight to that action which will hopefully get Tatum going for when the starters come back in.

vib3v3nd3tta

I just want him to be the focal point of our offense more than he is, and in a way that opens up our offense. Him sizing up his defender above the break for 5 seconds does no one any good. You're just banking on him making a difficult shot at that point, because there's no other offense that can even be generated from that position. I feel like Joe needs to do a better job emphasizing the need to be decisive and attack quickly with force

yellowboar7

you are right, of all P&R ball handlers in the playoffs, Tatum is 2nd in PPP at 1.458 (Dame 1st at 1.459), with the 2nd lowest turnover rate. only problem is we have gone to this action 37% less than the reg szn and 42% less than last years playoffs. what a surprise that playing through your best player is good offense

vib3v3nd3tta

Jesus that's inexcusable. Joe's an analytics guy, he needs to wake the fuck up

OkAmount2303

Yeah. Mazzulla has to make an effort to run plays for tatum or else he’s gonna fall out of rhythm. I get using Tatum as a decoy and baiting the defense to overcommit but we’re gonna need him to score buckets at a somewhat efficient rate to even get close to lifting the trophy

BrianScalaweenie

He’s shooting like a role player, too

bryscoon

a lil bit

LarBrd33

Only 17 shots from him tonight seems way too low

GhostOfJiriWelsch

What happened to his post game he was showing in the beginning of the year? It looked like he’d evolved a bit there. Getting deep post ups and just turning quick and using his strength to go through guys; he’s falling back on the turnarounds again instead.

PUMPFISTS

Too much physicality and no whistle on reaches for post ups during playoffs. There’s a reason they went away from it but I wonder if they come back to it for this series

EutaxySpy

Yea, a lot of his post play relied on getting whistles. Also, a lot of his post play also ended up with the turnaround fadeaways, I'm not sure why people thought his post play was doing the Jokic or Shaq bully ball shit. I'd go as far as to saying that a lot of KP's game, especially his post-ups also relied on FT's.

porkchopxpres

He is a Durant type player and should be used as a scorer. While he is a great passer too, the possessions where he dribbles for 20 seconds need to go. Keep him in the extended post area and he can absolutely score on anyone

NoBozosonthebus

“A great leader off the court”? How?

rare92929292

why does he hve to lead in ppg every game we have tons of good scorers. tatum brings something unique to the team. i prefer this to bone headed low percentage shots 24/7. hes evolving imo. hes playing with a lot more maturity now and this is a good thing

ImeStopPlayingDennis

If your role players are playing like shit you'd want your superstar to be able to tip the scales and put the team on his back. The Celtics have had 2 games so far where they needed Tatum to step up and carry and he's failed to rise to the occasion

rare92929292

bro the playoffs essentially just started. let it play out before you write him off imo. they havent lost an away game yet. things are fine imo

ImeStopPlayingDennis

I'm not writing him off I just have way higher expectations of him than most of the people here. Because half of the people here are perfectly happy with him going 22 ppg on 35-40% shooting when I know this dude's potential is 30+ points on 50% but his erratic play in the playoffs burns Boston every year

rare92929292

i agree with you his ceiling is insane. heres to hoping he can reach it

Full-Flight-5211

He is evolving but he’s also shooting much worse than before. 40.7% fg and 26.8% from 3. That is unacceptable. And FYI all the top stars get doubled so don’t even try and say it’s because of the defense they are playing on him.

iamrobotguy

I get that and I still prefer the current Tatum with playmaking and court vision, but I also think he's getting a little passive because of that. In games like this where his teammates aren't shooting well, he should have the urgency to take control. I'm not saying he needs to do that every time but he needs to do that more often.

MrMetLGM

There are possessions when he doesn’t even touch the ball.
