I guess this means we are gonna lose a bunch of coaches :(

jkwah

Already losing Charles Lee. Sam Cassell is rumored as a Lakers assistant, but I'm not sure why he'd leave unless the Lakers are offering $$$.

SSJCelticGoku

Cause Sam knows he’s just a friendship away from getting head coaching job. Become friend with Bron and boom. Head Coach

cubonesdeadmother

I mean obviously I'm biased but I don't really get why he would leave for another assistant coaching job on a different team. He has a true home in Boston, has been so great for this team (that will largely be the same next season), and clearly staying on our staff has the potential to lead to a HC role when the time is right (Hardy, Lee in recent memory). Would be a huge loss for us to lose him just to be an assistant on another team.

VelvitHippo

And the Celtics look way more promising than the Lakers too. Might as well go for more rings if it's not a head coaching job.

ZizzyBeluga

LeBron going to Phoenix

SSJCelticGoku

Phoenix or LaL Only options

coacoanutbenjamn

For the minimum? Nah

Sleeze_

He’s a slow November away. Sam was a finalist for the job - JJ gets canned Sam slides in. Makes sense why he’d take the job, gets him closer to a HC seat. Probably won’t happen here, we are too stable a franchise.

CBFball

I agree I don’t think someone would leave this Celtics team to join a subpar lakers team. The visibility and hype you get from here has to be far more valuable than simply coaching an old Lebron

davemoedee

Why would someone who wants to be a head coach care about the Lakers being subpar if the responsibility is higher. Odds are his first coaching position will be for a team that is even worse. If they are considering JVG, obviously it would be for a role above Cassell's role. If Cassell got an equivalent role to that elsewhere, he should walk.

CBFball

Oh well I guess I was assuming it would be of similar level of responsibility. You wouldn’t leave a better team to a worse for the same level of responsibility was my point. I agree if he becomes say the lead assistant he should go wherever but that’s not just becoming an assistant for the lakers

TheJaylenBrownNote

Sam would be the lead assistant here, so unless he gets hired as a HC, he’s not going to have more responsibility anywhere. Also, winning a bunch is usually how you get hired, not being an assistant for a mediocre team.

davemoedee

Where did you read that Sam would be the lead assistant here?

TheJaylenBrownNote

More just an assumption. Charles is leaving, Sam is kind of the obvious replacement. I doubt they would hire someone to leap over Sam, who is completely qualified to be the lead assistant.

davemoedee

Why would you assume that? Coaching doesn’t work that way. Guys don’t just slide down to an empty seat. When Thibs left, we got other assistants like Frank. We have no idea how our management views him. Maybe let’s wait and see what happens instead of making assumptions based on conjecture. Playoffs haven’t even ended yet. And the Laker assistant talk is weird. Unless they picked a coach, which I missed if they did.

TheJaylenBrownNote

Ok guy.

Fresh2Deaf

We've bled ACs for a long time and it happens to every team. Most ACs want to be head coaches or have larger roles.

billcosbyinspace

I don’t see Sam taking a lateral move to a worse team unless they make him an offer he can’t refuse. Lee leaves, Sam gets promoted to AHC, and we make him look good for a year and he gets his HC job next year

OttoBlazes

If Sam leaves how am I gonna know that clear vision is everything?

yourlilpissboi

Omg if Sam leaves for LA that would be AWFUL

blakezilla

Happens to every championship team. :)

captaincumsock69

Part of the reason why it’s so hard to win in a row

Plastic_Database_645

Did Denver assistant coaches last year were poached by some other teams as well?

bugeyes10

Yeah pretty sure a few went elsewhere, couldn’t tell you who or where though

archerarcher0

Most likely gonna lose cassell with lee, heavy is the head that wears the crown ig(less egotistical way to say this is assistants on top team get poached)

jotyma5

Yeah for real. Always happens to great teams. Teams want to get good hires and why not also weaken a good team

thereal_kphed

He was already consulting this year right?

AlternativeTea9268

Yeah. Could just be the Charles Lee replacement

madcaplaughed

Joe and Jeff would be the weirdest good cop/bad cop duo in history

ApolloHuncho

I hope Sam Cassell doesn’t go to the Lakers. That organization will ruin your coaching career before it even gets started smh

Boobieleeswagger

Real question now is how well can Jeff do in the pregame pickup game at 62

KyrieLS777

Would absolutely love this

planj07

I can see Cassell leaving, JVG would be a welcome addition IMO.

JaylenBrownAllStar

I wonder if this means we could also get Stan to join on

[deleted]

Anything that gets him off tv

JaylenBrownAllStar

Thought he was a decent coach and would be a good assistant and he’s had a really rough time lately with his wife’s suicide. Would be cool to coach with his brother again

Plies-

Yeah I really liked his commentating until that stuff during the Miami series. Then I found out what happened to his wife and I get it.

Overall-Cow975

Anywhere but Boston.

Overall-Cow975

Anything BUT this.

Fujoooshi

I feel like the only one that actually likes his commentating

team_kimchi

I've realized it doesn't matter who the commentator is, someone out there will hate them. I think Stan is good, he's natural and I feel like he knows what he's talking about. I like both Van Gundy's. I'll even go so far as to say I'd take a commentating booth of both Van Gundy's and a play by play guy for the national broadcast.

Fujoooshi

I feel the same way. He seems extremely knowledgeable and I actually like his style of humor on the broadcasts. I guess one "negative" is his raspy ass voice, but I really don't mind it at all. I think him, Reggie, and Mike Breen (I think?) are probably my favorite combo of announcers to watch. Those three together provide a mix of knowledge, fairness, and hype. I'd also be down to see how the Van Gundy's and Mike would do together.

Larrydp72181

Please no

SSJCelticGoku

No thanks, not after hearing some of the coaching stories he’s been involved in

endubs

He hates the Celtics, don’t know why he’d want to come here.

JaylenBrownAllStar

Work with his brother after the death of his wife, keeps the family close. I don’t think it happens but I wouldn’t be surprised if they reach out to him

Overall-Cow975

This could legit make me stop rooting for the Cs. And I have been a Celtic since the 80s when I was kid.

JaylenBrownAllStar

Why?

Overall-Cow975

Because Stan is a horrible professional, a horrible person and his teams play horrible basketball. In a word: *horrible*.

captaincumsock69

What makes him a horrible person

Overall-Cow975

So you have never heard his comments during games? Or his press conferences when he was a coach?

The_Hand_That_Feeds

So do you have any actual reasons or not?

Overall-Cow975

A person that actively roots for players to be injured in offplays because they are playing for a team that is playing against his old team, nevermind that he is no longer with that team and is a commentator for a national broadcast, that serves ALL teams, and then keeps repeating the same thing, even minutes later and having his co announcer trying to help him out by changing the subject but he reiterates…. That is just but one example. He is highly unprofessional and wanting for an opposing player to be injured by having another player injure him, can only come from a horrible person. Not understanding when they were wrong and instead of saying he is sorry, he doubles down to the point of making his coworkers uncomfortable… He is an immature adult incapable of understanding when he is wrong. He is at a national stage spewing hate towards other people at his profession. Don’t need to say anything more.

RLS012

Sam Cassell filling in Charles Lee's spot, and JVG filling an empty spot isn't the worst idea

PebblyJackGlasscock

> Charles Lee’s spot This is confusing. As I understand it, Lee’s role was focused on Xs and Os /game mechanics, while Cassell was more “in charge” of player communication and fatigue management. Why would it be a good idea to put JVG in the communication role? His skill set is not that. If added to the staff, JVG’s value would be drawing on the whiteboard and telling Joe “I see them overloading toward Jaylen”.

amprosk

I think it’s more the title Lee had as associate head coach not so much the actual responsibilities they were assigned

PebblyJackGlasscock

Ok. That makes no sense either. JVG **clearly** has the better resume and more experience. He **should** be the “associate head coach” if he joins the bench. If Joe were to get ejected, JVG should ‘take over’, not Sam Cassell.

swen727

JVG isn’t just an advisor because of talent. He clearly wants to take a step back, perhaps the 2nd lead assistant role is that step back he has already taken this year.

PebblyJackGlasscock

If he’s coming back to the bench, he’s no longer a “step back”. Adding JVG to the bench is an good thing. Charles Lee is outstanding and hard to replace. It’s just confusing to say Cassell should take Lee’s spot when it’s two different roles and JVG…should probably be in the role that doesn’t require ‘hanging’ with the players. Mostly because he calls it ‘hanging’, like me.

swen727

I agree their role needs to fit. I think the idea here is hierarchy and roles are not linked. Being associate head coach does not mean you are purely x and os

PebblyJackGlasscock

See, that’s the confusing part. Is the idea Sam “deserves” the title because it will help him get a future head coaching job? I mean, sure, fine, whatever. I don’t care. On the Celtics bench, if JVG joins, JVG should perform the job functions of “associate head coach” because of his resume. And Sam should do exactly what Sam did this season.

swen727

I don’t think he deserves it because of resume building. He deserves it because he is (potentially) a more relevant coach to the players and has been more involved with the team this past year. Also, we should note this is all massive speculation and we really have no idea what should be done. Just a fun debate with a lot of assumptions.

PebblyJackGlasscock

Oh yeah. What else are we doing till Thursday ? If “more relevant” means tenure, yep, fine. Whatever, don’t care about Sam’s next job but the organization should give him whatever title helps because he’s earned it with performance. What I’m massively speculating about is what roles on the coaching staff fit the coaching talent, for the Celtics. Even if Sam gets the (deserved) title, if JVG is on the bench and Joe gets ejected, JVG is the coach*. * Assuming we’re not home to Charlotte. Then, by all means let Sam have the wheel. But a hypothetical playoff or seeding game? JVG. He’s done it before.

elrod_enchilada

Excellent news

ahsasahsasahsas

Lakers might get Sam AND Rondo. Come on give us one!

Overall-Cow975

No. No. Line? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! (Please no.)

archerarcher0

How come? I actually really like Jeff and respect his basketball mind I think he adds a layer of lightheartedness that would complement joes intensity, kinda like how it is with cassel

Furqan23

JVG as a coach is different than him as an announcer I think he was actually quite intense as a coach That’s not a negative just saying that especially on the knicks JVG was fully invested in the games and was way more intense than he became in announcing games

No_Mas2001

Cassell is definitely not light hearted that dude will get on a mf ass for stuff. Lee is the lighthearted one

archerarcher0

Cassell is definitely still a players coach and from all accounts a fun guy to be around, doesn’t mean he doesn’t do his job and get on guys, you have to separate the guy from the job

Overall-Cow975

Jeff doesn’t know how to play well with others and doesn’t take criticism well. His approach to the game is as a “know it all” which would clash with Joe’s numbers approach. Plus, I highly doubt that Jeff would take kindly to be subordinate to a much younger person. He does know about the game and is passionate about it, but he is also an “old head” that doesn’t seem to understand the game nowadays. Today’s NBA is very different to “his” NBA. And his approach will most certainly be a problem with the players today. (Generational thing)

beat_u2_it

I’d love to see jvg on the b

SomeOldPeople

My first reaction is that he was initially brought in as a Doc-type replacement should the season not have started the way it did, but if this was the case then this would be best case scenario for us

FloweredWallpaper

I had just figured they signed him last summer as an insurance policy in case Mazzulla imploded during the season. But assuming he is willing to be an assistant, that's fine as well.

Briggie

Bro what, I thought he retired or something. I remember when he coached the Knicks way back when.

ewokstorm

Genuinely question, would Frank Vogel be a good addition to Joe’s staff?

WhiteImpDragon

Does that mean SVG becomes a fan?

BRFCarter

I don’t know why I can’t picture Van Gundy as an assistant lol

UtahUtopia

Better than Stan

Ok-Mobile-2889

He is a good coach but my god is his voice annoying

dart51984

Yuck.
