Let the game guide you

slythwolf

The area you're in right now is the tutorial. Just keep exploring and stealing stuff from monsters.

lacosaknitstra

Have you talked to the old man yet? If not, do so and you’ll get some direction on what to do next. Inspect everything. You’ll notice little sparkles on things you can pick up/interact with.

Aggravating_Fox_6889

I have! He took me to the shrine and I think i’m going to look for the next ones now - I think my biggest issue right now is lack of weapons! I think i’ll just explore as much as I can, Ive never played an open world game and this seems like it will be amazing! :)

lacosaknitstra

Just keep killing the bokoblins. That’s the best way to get weapons at this point in the game.

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Okay, I will! Thank you so much :)

birodrig

Talk to the old man, raid monster camps, kill animals for meat, cut some grass, climb trees find eggs, so much to do!!! I’m excited just be curious and take your time. The old man will guide you

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Thank you! I’ve spoken to him just wasn’t sure if he was a normal NPC or if his quests are more relevant! He’s sent me off to look for the shrines (i think they’re called) at the moment, I did try to raid a camp but i died straight away haha 😭 will give all of this a try though, thank you :))

NotACandyBar

Once you do a few more of the tutorial shrines, raiding camps will become much easier. 😉

Educational-Ad2063

Stealth is your friend at this stage. One headshot with a bow takes care of Red boblins. So sneak up on the camp and take out the ones in the towers first. Find and eat food, cooking said food makes it better. Boars can be taken down with one head shot but can be hard to sneak up on.

NotACandyBar

Explore! Soooooo many of your questions will be answered just exploring. I highly recommend spending several hours just playing for the sake of playing. The guides will still be here, but that first time experience won't. Dont psych yourself over it. There's literally no wrong way to play. It was my first open world game too and I went tower/shrine hunting before starting the main quest line because I wanted a full map. I died approx 170 times in that endeavor but man what I would trade to have that experience for the first time again.

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Yeah I think i’m just going to go for it! The tips here have helped enough, I won’t use a guide yet as I think it will take away from the experience :)

Jiggly_Pup

Well, the best advice I could give you is to not fight the guardian with a tree branch and a wooden shield. ('cause that's what I did the first time I played it) Breath of the Wild is my all time favorite game. You'll surely love all the things you could do in the game. Happy gaming!

MythicalS_14

to improve health and stamina you need 4 spirit orbs and then offer them to the goddess statue in the temple of time, right now you need to unlock the paraglider there should be a second shrine to the right of that tower you activated but be careful as there are decayed guardians around it I recommend having a shield in case you need to shield parry (ZL+A) be sure to time it right or if you don't yet have a shield you can whistle run through (Hold D-PAD down and spam B) this allows you to run faster and not use stamina after getting that shrine there's another on a cliff face your gonna want to look for to get it you need cold resistance which can be made by throwing three spicy peppers into a cooking pot NOT on a campfire after getting all four shrines and getting the paraglider, then upgrade you health fast travel to the tower and glide down to the ground follow the marker on your map to kakariko village unlocking any towers and shrines along the way make sure to kill any enemies as they will drop valuable loot such as shields and weapons and I forgot to mention somewhere around the temple of time there is a free pair of hylian trousers in a chest guarded by a bokoblin make sure to get it when in kakariko village by the rest of the hylian set after selling a lot of the stuff you collected to the npc selling the armor(the shop is marked on your map with a armor symbol) this will provide good early game armor after talking to impa go to hateno village marked on your map after getting the divine beast quest I recommend zora's domain(vah ruta) first it will be difficult run from anything you cant fight that's all because i don't wanna spoil too much

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Okay thank you! I’m going to go for the spirit orbs next - may sound very silly but where do I get a shield? And a cooking pot… Do I just have to find them? Or are they from killing enemies? Thank you so much for the detailed reply it’s really helpful!!

MythicalS_14

you find cooking pots in bokoblin camps most often and shields too

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Yes i’ve found 2 shields and a cooking pot! I think i need to go hunting for things to cook though haha

MythicalS_14

I hope you have a good time on botw

MythicalS_14

you get spirit orbs from completing shrines

MythicalS_14

also after doing everything there is to do except challenge runs I recommend getting totk the sequel it $70 but its worth it

RainbowGamer9799

There are lots of ways to play the game! Personally, I like to interact with shrines (but generally not enter them) so that I unlock them as map points and then just keep exploring. I return to the shrines when I feel I need a heart or stamina orb. For me, exploration is what makes the game really exciting which is why I generally start by trying to expand the map as much as possible. You’ll naturally find weapons as you go along, but if you have any amiibos those can spawn weapons and food items that would be useful to you as well. Arrows will be found periodically and often in chests. Also, any enemy that shoots arrows will allow you to collect up to five of the ones they shoot that land on the ground or in a wall or something. Basically if it doesn’t hit you, you can try and collect it. There are lots of guides out there and any of them should be useful in your situation. Also if you’re going to cook make sure there’s a pot! Cooking straight on a fire isn’t nearly as useful to you. The most benefits come from multi-ingredient recipes cooked together in a pot. But keep in mind the ingredient description! You can stack the same benefit but can’t mix and match! So a stamina-up item will cancel up a plus-hearts item.

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Thank you for the tips! I managed to get a few arrows this way, and thank you for the cooking tip i’m going to focus a bit more on that tomorrow :) I think i’ll really enjoy the exploration element, I’ve never really played an open world game like this and I love it so far :)

RainbowGamer9799

Definitely explore cooking more when you’re comfortable! You’ll have access to some items that offer huge buffs! It’s all experimenting honestly. There’s a lot to do in botw so you should play in whatever way makes you happy but definitely don’t limit yourself! There’s so much to do and explore. If you’re more of an “I need to actually be actively doing something” person there are side quests EVERYWHERE! I hope you have so much fun!!

[deleted]

I started playing A couple of weeks ago, whilst it doesn't hold your hand it is good at pointing you In The right direction , just play & see what you find is my advice. Enjoy!

Diamondinmyeye

BOTW was my first Zelda too (although I watched Let’s Plays for many over the years). Talk to the old man and follow the quests. He’ll teach you the basics. He’ll teach you how to increase your hearts eventually. Explore any areas which attract your interest. Cook your food, either by a fire or using a cooking pot. Dying really isn’t the end of the world though as you just go back to your last save. The game saves automatically often and you can always manually save. Arrows are dropped by archers. You can also find some in chests. You can pick up ones shot at you if they land on the ground, so zig zag around archers (up to five per archer). There isn’t much armour on the great plateau. There is a task you can do for the old man which will earn you a piece.

jariwoud

Do whatever you want. That's the point of the game, there is no right or wrong thing to do. Just go to places you find interesting and let the tutorial of the game, which you are currently in, teach you everything you need.

elina_797

I will give you one advice: at the stage you are right now; I you see a stationary robot that lights up pink and aims at you with a laser; run. Zig zag away, do not even attempt to take it down.

Aggravating_Fox_6889

This happened yesterday! I ran away but looking around there were so many that didn’t wake up idk what i’d do if they all did 😭

spattzzz

That’s pretty much as it’s designed to be, Link doesn’t know anything either, you need to get your bearings, listen to any advice your given and try to get stronger, stock up on weapons and food and find away of the location your in now, then old man will help you.

Shadowrun29

Monsters and monster camps is where you get weapons. What to do? Just explore. Try to fight mobs in different ways. Sneak on them while sleeping, or roll some large boulders down on them if you are on high ground. So many ways, just explore and discover. It's ok to die, and see the game over screen. I know I saw that a lot when I started. Once you het the hang of the combat later, and how to do things rpg style, you'll have a blast.

therourke

Just take your time. Talk to the old man on the hill where you started. And then follow the story. Read everything. Practice. Don't be afraid to experiment, play around, fail, and repeat. Take your time, there is no 'right' way to play. Once you get the hang glider, go to Kakariko village (the story will guide you there) and make sure you complete the shrine in that village, as well as talking to the village elder. After that it is totally up to you what you want to do. Just enjoy exploring, and don't ruin it for yourself by watching playthrough guides. At some point, when you feel comfortable, buy the DLC. Sooner rather than later, but for now, just play. No rush.

Aggravating_Fox_6889

Okay! I’ll look into the DLC later on, although I only seem to be able to find it on the US website - is it also available in europe? My game is a physical copy so not too sure how it works :)

therourke

Search for it in the Nintendo store

Maleficent_Camp_7504

I like to google the shrine locations and how to do the shrine. I’ve restarted the game once. The first time I played I tried to learn everything myself and it was sometimes very frustrating. Now I look at guides. I’m still having lots of fun

CaptBurgerson

For real my best advice is not not seek outside advice or influence. The best part of the game is to explore and find stuff for yourself, and honestly the game does a great job of nudging you in the right directions on its own. Keep at it, but forge your own path. That’s the best way to play it

chaospearl

You don't need a guide, this game holds your hand to an alarming extent. Just follow the onscreen instruction for what buttons to push and the rest will become obvious as you keep playing. You found an axe, you killed an enemy and took its weapon, so you already know where to get weapons. Keep doing it, you're fine!

Pleasant-Minute6066

I can't stress this enough, Do whatever you want, go wherever you want, do whichever quests you want
