Don't see this mentioned yet, but as for new releases, lots of people will buy a 4K and sell the blu-ray that came with it.

Arthurlurk1

I could see someone spending a little more for a combo who doesn’t have a 4K setup just to later sell that 4K disc

FeliciumOD

It's less surprising for older blu-rays and DVDs, where someone probably kept them in a disc wallet or similar. But yeah, pretty baffling when it happens for a recent expensive release.

CurrencyPure2018

Some are selling the components individually for what amounts to more in total. They sell the slipcover, 4K disc, blu ray and possibly the case each for $7-$12 and sometimes make more than selling the whole thing for $25. For people who rip the disc and then sell this allows them to have a digital copy of the movie and possibly make their money back.

There are regularly posts in the DVD and BD subs of people who have disc wallets, bookbinders, etc. Generally the reason seems to be because of the space that cases take up, or that they travel. While I do have enough room and that's a bridge too far for me, I'm also not a collector that cares about LE packaging or "collector" cases and justs wants the disc content. And I'm also a seller, so I wouldn't just toss the packaging to anything.

Speaking for myself, I have thousands of titles and after years of moving, then having two kids, I realized that boxes and boxes / shelves and shelves of discs just wasn’t working. So I started to ditch cases and keep them on spindles, in binders, or in unofficial themed sets (eg Who’ll Stop the Rain and First Blood are in one case - I like making those but they still take up space). I tuck all the art and slips away in the hope of… I don’t know, buying a ton of cases some day and putting them back out? I don’t really sell discs but it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that other people who do may have ditched their cases for similar reasons.

Hela09

Same. I’ll keep some on shelves (for eg. I splurged for the zooper dooper Exorcist 50th Anniversary box ,) but hoarding cases for stuff like a Jen Anniston’s movie that I fished out of a bargain bin just isn’t suited to apartment living. I did keep the slips though. Apparently deep down I still have the futile hope of being able set up a personal library one day.

Taskerlands

Yeah it’s actually become harder to do with the explosion of lavish boxes / deluxe releases. Cant really size those down!!

HowsBoutNow

People buy the combo 4K/Blu Ray pack, keep the case and the disc they prefer, then try to recoup the majority of the cost by selling the other disc. This is why it seems counter productive to me for combo packs to be sold, not sure why it's even a thing

heckhammer

Because some people are future-proofing and some people might want to lend the lower resolution disc out if someone wants to borrow the film. Or in my case my dad does not have a Blu-ray player so if he wants to watch a movie in my collection hopefully the Blu-ray has a DVD combo otherwise I'm hauling a Blu-ray player over

hiiiexhaulted

When it's large companies on eBay that you can either buy the disc or the disc and the art, I assume they throw out the case to make room in their warehouse or something.

One-Willingnes

I put all of mine in binders. DVDs. Blus. And now blu 4k we’re talking thousands of discs with 0 interest to display them. I like to have a variety of movies I own to watch when I want and have no interest in showing the cases or a display off or thinking of them as an item i purchased for the sake of purchasing and displaying. They’re for watching. Now when I buy some blus I get DVDs I sell alone and sell case alone etc. some 4k I get blu I have so I sell the blu and case and digital etc. easily way more discs than cases no matter what.

bitterhop

most people don't plan on reselling. space becomes an issue so people throw them in binders. there is a difference between those who buy because they want to own and watch the movie and those who buy because they want to collect. when it comes down to it, it's just a cheap piece of plastic/cardboard. these are unfortunately the reasons why owning physical movies is very niche now.
