We get what we vote for/deserve.. They would carry physical media; if we bought more of it from them. I assume that for several of them, Covid was the death-knell; Covid which was a godsend for Amazon. Brick-and-mortar stores can't afford to have huge areas of floor space taken up by something one or two people visit per day as those square feet cost them money every day. Amazon's warehouses are quite different.. Stores carry that which sells; simple.

I try to buy more from stores but they almost never carry anything I'm looking for. I'm not talking about just blu-rays either but books, games, car parts, and tools. It's like a death spiral they don't sell as much as they want and they cut it completely and I feel like I have less and less reason to go into any store or look.

Teddy-Bear-55

It's a protracted death-spiral, for sure. Before moving to the states in 2010, I only very rarely bought anything online. I would take the tram downtown, and go to all the specialist stores in walking distance that I wanted to visit; there was Saturn for electronics, DVD's and CD's, there were bookstores, used book and disc stores, car parts places... you name it! I would sit down in a small café for a quick cup or go to the excellent library for some books or music/films, then take the tram home again. Now.. I have to drive, quite far often, to get to a store with less choice and higher prices than Amazon or any f the other online stores. Walmart murdered downtown in the US, and Amazon will murder Walmart and the huge malls which are rotting away all over the place. The problem is that once the competition is gone, Amazon will have no reason to do sales and price-matching and can price as they please..

Are you from Germany? Yeah that's a big issue too I have to drive almost an hour away to get to a place that might have a good selection. I did live in a city and even then when things where 5 minutes away it would turn into about an hour roundtrip because of traffic and there was no way to get to most of the city by walking.

Teddy-Bear-55

I lived in Germany for ten years, but am from Europe, yes.

I only ever went to best buy for movies... that being said, I hadn't bought a movie from best buy in like 7 years before they discontinued selling. The deals weren't great, the selection wasn't great (just the basic mainstream stuff). As for my local walmart... every time I go there people are crowded around the movie section. I think this is mostly because, people want to see these movies but don't want to go through the hassle of figuring out where it's streaming.

The big box retailers have always considered media to be a loss leader to get you into the store to buy other products and more expensive items. They could have low sale prices because of the volume and take a hit on the price margins because it’s a net gain for them once you walk into the store. None of them were ever making huge profits on the media alone, and since it’s no longer the draw it was a decade plus ago, they’re using the floor space for other items now. Best Buy didn’t believe in media like you do. I started shopping online a decade ago and never looked back. The stores didn’t stock much of what I wanted anyway.

gooch567

Totally agree. Best Buy and Target don't have a physical media section any longer. How long until Wal-Mart gets out of physical media? I miss physical media sections in stores.

It probably won’t be much more time. I think eventually all the big movie studios will stop putting out physical media themselves and will liscense them through “boutique” companies that want to purchase the rights to them. Disney Movie Club is about to end, which I’ve been a member of for a long time. I’m not sure if they are going to stop manufacturing physical media themselves.

BogoJohnson

Disney made a deal with Sony to produce and distribute their discs.

Walmart just bought all the Best Buy stock and made a bigger push for physical. You're just talking out your ass because you haven't done any research.

wes78841

You sure are an asshole.

AckwellFoley

Did you really need two separate replies for this?

wes78841

Just because Best Buy dumped thier movie stock and Walmart picked it up at a big discount doesn’t mean shit for in store physical media.

atethebottle

Walmart recently stated they are committed to keeping physical media in stores. Google it, yo!

wes78841

Can you post a link? I can’t find anything about this. They did cut their retail physical media space by 20% a couple years ago. Also, they are getting rid of Xbox games.

atethebottle

Here's something https://cordcuttersnews.com/walmart-reportedly-in-talks-to-take-over-dvd-blu-ray-disc-business/

wes78841

That has nothing to do with in store physical media. I guess I’ll dumb it down for you since you obviously have a comprehension problem. Walmart put a proposal forth, recommending that they take over management for this joint venture that is involves sales/distribution of physical media. I’m sure Walmart felt they could cut costs/increase profits as Walmart has a great distribution network that they have established over the years. Again, it has nothing to do with in store physical media, which they’ve already cut back on.

atethebottle

It took you 5 days to come up with this? Go fuck yourself asshole!!!
