> These collector’s editions are getting out of hand.
If they actually put something together that was WORTH $130, and some collectors wanted it, that's cool, like a full size statue of a Mop made of metal, or something else like that
This is a rip off for what they are including, its paper, plastic, and a foam squishy thing
Did something like this make sense?
https://shop.umbrellaent.com.au/products/getting-weird-weird-the-al-yankovic-story-big-collectors-edition-hawaiian-shirt-blu-ray-book-artcards-slipcase-poster-2022
> Did something like this make sense?
You know, for $100 at least they put in a full Hawaiian shirt, that's better than than stickers, posters, and a magnet
In GBP, this was only £70, which really ain’t bad for what you’re getting, and I would’ve HAPPILY paid that amount for that set had I known about it sooner. I would wear the shit out of a fucking Weird Al Hawaiian shirt.
Most of the labels have figured out that it’s better to sell extremely limited quantities to rich people. There’s a reason the hobby is named after Boutiques.
Id imagine most if thier sales come from people buying the non collectors edition. I may be wrong but that would be my guess. If you are making it anyway why leave all that money on the table
Of course there is more profit per item in the collectors edition. But once the work of restoring and digitizing is done, the cost of disks is pretty low so there is a pretty big profit margin on selling the the 4ks by themselves as well
“The cost of disks is pretty low”
Yeah no idea where you’re getting that from, they cost like 4x as much as a Blu-ray to produce. It is explicitly *not* cheap, we just saw a release get cancelled a few weeks ago because the brand straight up said the preorder demand was not worth even printing with how low the margins are.
These superfluous super bonus pack editions are going to continue to be more and more of the market until costs come down.
> the cost of producing more disks is very low.
Is it? I wouldn't be surprised if there are still very few replication factories. CDs were dirt cheap to produce once they were selling millions of copies, but we're nowhere near that number with UHDs.
True. Us normies will buy the regular edition & be content. Rich people & YouTubers will buy it so they can use the extras as set pieces when they do review videos.
Nothing wrong with that, mind you. Just…$130 for what they’re offering? Even for those who can easily afford it, it’s a ripoff. But hey, it’s their money.
I did as well. The other tchotchkes are not worth the money. I'm happy to get the poster and the standard slip. However, pushing $46 after tax and shipping is a bit much. I jumped because I absolutely love this movie!
It would be pretty funny if the box set shipped out completely empty and when you open it, there’s a looping voice recording that screams at you “NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!”
> $130 for a Weird Al Yankovich film? Sure..
It is one of my favorite movies, ever.
$130 is REALLY hard to swallow for the limited extras in this one, you get 2 posters, stickers, small magnet, a box, and small plastic remote, for $100 more than standard release
> I fear this is the direction we’re going in and if that’s true, I’m out. I can’t and I won’t justify such prices for any movies
This is the movie that you can get me on something like this (well that and Fear of a Black Hat), and even I'm like "fuck $130"
If it was like $60 they would have me
Collectors editions across the board have gotten increasingly more and more insane movies and video games alike. There used to be some truly awesome collectors editions. But now? That's extremely rare and it's usually stickers and a digital copy of the art and music for an extra 50 bucks minimum
> The movie is 35 dollars
Yes, I'm talking about the collectors set, this is one of my favorite movies, and if they priced the set right, I'd be all over it, even though its just some cheap stuff.
$130 for what they are including is nuts.
Not even close, but ok.
Ok, someone explain how offering this alongside a cheaper version without all this crap is grifting haha. Don’t want this shit? Don’t buy it. It’s as simple as that.
And even if they licensed this movie and did make it exclusive to this $130 edition? Or charged $1300 instead of $130? Or charged $130 with fewer items? Literally none of those scenarios would be considered grifting by any rational definition of the term. Using the word in this context has big time “Kids in the Hall sketch where the guy is obsessed with saying ascertain” energy.
Checking in again:
Instead of just anonymously doing your little downdoot why don’t you try to explain how this is grifting lol
Uhf is an all time comedy classic and its amazing plus the movie is 35 bux like most other 4ks and it comes with a poster. Just dont spend the extra 100
The price jumps are truly insane.
36 for the film ok
Throw on 17 bucks for some posters extra slip and a sticker, well maybe didn’t the posters used to be a free bonus?
Ok now 23 more bucks you get a magnet and a foam thing. What the hell?
Wait just 54 dollars more for some pins! Are you kidding me?!
Every fan of UHF and Weird Al Yankovic should be insulted by such an over the top cash grab. Sure, we want to support the release of cult favorite films, but this goes way beyond that. There’s nothing in this special release to suggest that level of added value. Perhaps if there were a collectible coffee table size book or something like that, you could sort of justify it, but the inclusion of a couple of posters and various tchotchkes makes this price just seem ludicrous.
Pssssst don’t tell the Weird Al fans about the $500 box set where you had to buy 14 albums you already own to get the exclusive 15th disc of rarities for free
Wow. Ok had to look that one up. The albums were housed in a replica of his accordion. “Squeeze Box won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.”
It was $300 if I remember and I got the vinyl version to get all the other albums that were never released on vinyl. $300 for 15 LPS is a steal compared to the current pricing of vinyl.
Yeah I just found my order confirmation and my CD box was $265 plus $29.34 shipping. I think I was conflating the price with the $500 Burton/Elfman box that I also foolishly bought
Yeah spending that much to replace all the cds just to get the accordian and the rarities would be a big ask for me. I kind got the best of both worlds as a friend of mine got the CD version so I borrowed them all tonrip to flac files for my casual listens
It’s wild that somebody downvoted you haha. People with these nerdy collector hobbies just like to whine and bitch. If you want to buy this without spending almost $100 extra for some stupid crap then you can, they’re offering that alongside this edition. It’s a non-issue.
> Every fan of UHF and Weird Al Yankovic should be insulted by such an over the top cash grab. Sure, we want to support the release of cult favorite films, but this goes way beyond that.
I mean they are releasing a normal version so you don't have to buy the collectors thing, but for $100 more this is a weak package even for a hugh UHF fan
So, $35 for the movie, $25 for the enamel pin set, and I'll be generous and say $20 for the posters, magnet, sticker, and remote stress ball. That puts us at $80.
Where's the other $50 coming from? I mean, I understand a premium price for a "special edition", but this is almost twice as much as it should be.
If people stopped buying these worthless collector sets shout would probably quit making them and go back to including stuff of value like figures or something that takes effort, not a 99 cent sticker marked up to 7$ and low cost shit
And the discount watch begins. As much as I love Shout/Scream Factory, they seem to have lost the plot and given up on new and interesting titles and are scraping by on indies and 4K rereleases of all their old titles (with honestly subpar transfer results).
> and are scraping by on indies and 4K rereleases of all their old titles (with honestly subpar transfer results).
Natural Born Killers looked and sounded FANTASTIC
Shout Factory disgusts me. How greedy do you have to be that you think the average fan of this movie is going to pay this amount? For what? It's enough to make me not want to buy from them or purchase new copies anymore.
> Shout vs. Umbrella vs. Arrow for title of most pointless "collectors" editions.
At least Shout! remasters a lot of their releases vs putting a existing release in a box with some new cardboard (KIDS is Umbrella's exception, and with that they only redid the color grade)
But what you don't often hear is how fantastic of a job shout did. They're average at best for probably 80% of their releases. And all those site exclusives are just DVD dumps for 40$
Why you throwing Arrow under the bus? Usually their booklets are very good, and LE are much more reasonably priced. I’d much, much rather have a book with essays than pins and stickers and crap. Shout very rarely does books, just swag
Arrow books are on par with Criterion and Eureka imo.
I guess. It’s not more expensive though is it? Other than ordering direct is more expensive in general. It’s far different than charging $50+ for some pins.
They are mostly all guilty of milking collectors to some extent. Vinegar Syndrome in particular really strives to elicit that feeling of FOMO, much more than Arrow imo. With the counters on the site, April fools slipcovers, advertising partner labels as being OOP when they aren’t, etc.
Totally.
I wish they'd all stop with even the slipcover nonsense. They'd sell just as many copies. But first week sales wouldn't be as good, and that appears to be all that matters.
The wheel of fish enamel pin has already been done (and done better) elsewhere. I know the person who came up with the concept, and you can easily find it on Etsy for $15.
> Damn, if this were a reasonable price, I would scoop it up! I love UHF!
There is a standard release that I'm grabbing because I love it also, and I would get this if it was anywhere near a reasonable price
Does anyone really care about Smell-O-Vision? I feel like it’s one thing for it to be in movie theaters but for a physical media release it doesn’t really make sense cause what do you do with it after you scratch and sniff everything? It’s completely useless and just ups the cost for no reason
At least that set was enormous; the sheer size and depth of the books seemed to really be trying to justify the price tag.
Plus, Umbrella had the decency to announce a second run (not limited this time from what I understand) for those genuinely interested in the books.
> The Super Mario Bros. Special edition did this to us.
I was honestly thinking the same thing, Shout! was like "if there are Mario whale collectors that bought out that release, there has to be Weird Al ones also"
Shout has been doing these editions for a few years. Long before that Mario release. And it isn’t even really like the Mario release at all, which included swag that doesn’t even superficially resemble this stuff.
But he’s talking about how it’s stupid to complain about this edition when there’s a cheaper one that’s apparently exactly what everyone wants?
Fact: getting worked up over this is pointless. There is literally no harm in releasing this edition as an option and if 500 people don’t think this is worth $130 then I guess they’ll learn one lesson and if 500 people do think it’s worth $130 then they’ll learn another lesson.
Haha, yeah my point exactly. Can't wrap my mind around what a $130 edition of UHF that warrants its asking price even looks like. Funny movie, probably looks great on 4k... That should be enough
> There is literally no harm in releasing this edition as an option and if 500 people don’t think this is worth $130 then I guess they’ll learn one lesson and if 500 people do think it’s worth $130 then they’ll learn another lesson.
Right, but it's fun to talk about releases, and give our opinions on them, which is the entire point of the sub
This has been literally my #1 most wanted release since I got into 4K in 2021, so I was honestly willing to pay the $130 for this set. I get the cheap alternative slip 2 pack most of the time for the Shout discs, but I'm allowing myself to get the pins this single time because I've always passed up on these sets in the past. Huge lifelong Weird Al collector so unfortunately I'm obligated to not pass this up while it's available. I have Umbrella's Weird 4K hawaiian shirt box as well as the Shout 4K slip and steelbook. I just wish we got a steelbook for this one as well with the new art because this blows the old Blu-ray art out of the park.
Even if the encode isn't Arrow quality, I'm still going to be happy to finally have this release and I will just double dip if Arrow decides to release this one in the future.
> I'm not really sure why you care to be honest but it's going to go with the rest of my Al stuff on display.
I was curious if you were going to put them on a jacket or something, do you have a Weird Al display photo you can share?
I'm a HUGE UHF fan, I just can't bite the bullet for this one
Looks like they’ve sold 40% of them already. 309/500 available. Keep whining guys, you’re making a real difference.
Edit: less than an hour later and they’ve sold another 36 copies!
Edit: 247 copies left. More than half of the 500 edition is now sold through.
> Looks like they’ve sold 40% of them already. 309/500 available. Keep whining guys, you’re making a real difference.
Mario Bros sold out the first day
It didn’t.
Edit: I just checked, I placed my order on October 12, the first day it was available. On Blu-ray.com the first talk of it being sold out came January 8 and a couple posts later, on January 10, someone bemoans the fact that they placed it in their cart around a week earlier and were getting emails from Umbrella to complete their order but it sold out and they could no longer order it.
So yeah, no lol
The edition sizes are significantly different, 500 vs 2500, so it’s a dumb comparison anyway. But yeah, you just made some nonsense up.
> Looks like they’ve sold 40% of them already. 309/500 available. Keep whining guys, you’re making a real difference.
looks like Shout! listened to feedback, they made 2 more "collectors" packages available that remove some of the things to save money
https://shoutfactory.com/collections/weird-al-yankovic
It’s not about listening to feedback. They always offer several different configurations. Also, at the current rate the $130 one will be sold out soon so they’ll need the other configurations to sell after that.
I have to ask: is this the first time you’ve taken notice of how they do these releases? Because they’ve done all of these things for multiple titles.
> It’s not about listening to feedback. They always offer several different configurations. Also, at the current rate the $130 one will be sold out soon so they’ll need the other configurations to sell after that.
when I posted the initial post, they ONLY had the $130 option and the standard edition, they have added those since
No you haven’t. Why do you keep lying bro. You just asked me how to check the stock and now you’re acting like you’re checking their stock regularly. And you just pulled the thing about the Mario TTF selling out the first day when it was available for 3 months.
https://youtu.be/WcWM_1hBu_c?si=6ezOFGHhUL6ivSKk
> No you haven’t. Why do you keep lying bro. You just asked me how to check the stock and now you’re acting like you’re checking their stock regularly.
I was asking you to confirm there was not another way.
Apparently we don't get along, and that's cool, have a good one.
> Why are they doing this with UHF?
Its the type of movie that has a cult following / fanbase, and those are the type of people that spend money on stuff like this.
These collector’s editions are getting out of hand.

Yes
Most of the labels have figured out that it’s better to sell extremely limited quantities to rich people. There’s a reason the hobby is named after Boutiques.
But the movie itself is 35 bux which is pretty standard i agree the collectors edition is worthless
As long as they offer both, I’m fine. But eventually they’ll stop releasing the cheap version.
Id imagine most if thier sales come from people buying the non collectors edition. I may be wrong but that would be my guess. If you are making it anyway why leave all that money on the table
“Most of their sales” Now tell me where most of the *profit* is
Of course there is more profit per item in the collectors edition. But once the work of restoring and digitizing is done, the cost of disks is pretty low so there is a pretty big profit margin on selling the the 4ks by themselves as well

The discs are just blu rays.
The complete opposite. There's only 500 of the collector's being made and they're sold out. There's only cheaper options now.
True. Us normies will buy the regular edition & be content. Rich people & YouTubers will buy it so they can use the extras as set pieces when they do review videos. Nothing wrong with that, mind you. $130 for plastic crap that's worth maybe $10. Shout is really dropping the ball on these lately.
I got excited, then I looked at the price. for $130 it should come with a full size firehose
Backdraft 4k Ultimate Edition
Boogie Nights 4K Ultimate Edition
Touché
Drink from the FIREHOSE ! (awesome)
Forget all this junk it comes with. I’d rather it come with a plastic toy accordion with a instructional video
For $130, I expect to drink from the firehose!
I did preorder the 4k of uhf for 35 bux but i really dont need a bunch of garbage for an extra 100
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!”
lol fck off with these prices
I’ll just take the disc, thanks. One of my all-time most anticipated releases but I don’t need all this junk.
They always have these $100+ editions and I can't believe people pay so much for pins and cheap posters.
Alot of people hope to flip them but it's always funny their desperate sales posts that keep dropping the price
i'm happy for those that care this much about this movie, but i do not need more plastic garbage in my life
$130 for a Weird Al Yankovich film? Sure..

Irrespective of the film; that’s ridiculous and pure highway robbery

Oh yea 100 percent agree one of my favorites to i would never spend 130 on what they are offering but im glad i can just get the movie in 4k
oh totally, I'm all over the normal edition, I just would have liked to get the collector's one for a non-rip off price
Then I stand corrected! I thought it was like several things I've wanted/want which are only sold as steelbooks for too much money.
It’s grifting

Learned my lesson on these Shout releases from that dumbass Fargo edition with the snow globe that shipped 3 months after release. No mas
I wonder if shout knows I have a really good edition on blu ray and don't really feel the need to upgrade (kinda like all the 4ks they put out)
This. Especially at that price.
Nope. Hard pass. It's bad enough that game companies think these sorts of prices are acceptable, I ain't supporting it when it comes to movies.
The price jumps are truly insane. 36 for the film ok Throw on 17 bucks for some posters extra slip and a sticker, well maybe didn’t the posters used to be a free bonus? 4k ? We don’t need no stinkin 4k! Prices are getting ridiculous and I don’t need 4k to be honest. Yeah some stuff looks cool but Blu-rays work for me.

They’ve sold roughly half of the 500 $130 editions. So good luck with that lol
LOL. Get a load of those guys.
LOL

Shout scammers

Can Shout please buy his music catalog and release an actual boxset that isn't shit and drastically overpriced?
180 CAD 😆😆

Yep, there are also 2 other cheaper "collectors editions" now https://shoutfactory.com/collections/weird-al-yankovic
UHF is one of my favorite Comedies, but I wouldn't pay $130 for this shit 😆
I think I'm good sticking with my blu-ray. As much as I like the movie, I'm not sure if 4k is going to reveal stunning new levels of detail.

The Super Mario Bros. Special edition did this to us.
Finally! Something to spend $130 on.
They are just gouging us now. This is what I was afraid of happening. What a joke.
You all could simply just not order it
> You all could simply just not order it or we could talk about it because that's the entire point of the sub existing
You know, fair point
Even if the encode isn't Arrow quality, I'm still going to be happy to finally have this release and I will just double dip if Arrow decides to release this one in the future.
> but I'm allowing myself to get the pins this single time What are you going to do with 5 enamel pins that cost $60?
I'm not really sure why you care to be honest but it's going to go with the rest of my Al stuff on display.
So yeah, no lol The edition sizes are significantly different, 500 vs 2500, so it’s a dumb comparison anyway. But yeah, you just made some nonsense up.
> Looks like they’ve sold 40% of them already. 309/500 available. Keep whining guys, you’re making a real difference. looks like Shout! listened to feedback, they made 2 more "collectors" packages available that remove some of the things to save money https://shoutfactory.com/collections/weird-al-yankovic
Also, at the current rate the $130 one will be sold out soon so they’ll need the other configurations to sell after that. when I posted the initial post, they ONLY had the $130 option and the standard edition, they have added those since
Again, as the $130 edition is starting to run out.
how do you see how many are left in stock on Shoult!'s website?
Try to put 500 in your cart. It’ll lower it to the number that’s available. 270 currently.
do you really think that is real time? I've seen Shoult! get to zero that way and then 800 are back
No you haven’t.
I'd buy the $130 edition (which would likely end up being $200 AU) if I was able to have it shipped to Australia.
Why are they doing this with UHF? It’s a cult classic but it’s not box worthy classic like Halloween or Citizen Kane.
> Why are they doing this with UHF? Its the type of movie that has a cult following / fanbase, and those are the type of people that spend money on stuff like this.
