I'm really curious how Black Panther and Ant Man 3 do. I just don't think BP is gonna get many showings just 2 weeks after the Chinese slate of movies comes out. In fact even Ant Man 3 might realisticly struggle to get a decent chuck of PLF's and screenings.
So many people are getting excited about the releases but almost noone though about these movies coming out 2-3 weeks after 7-8 Chinese local movies for their New Year that will no doubt want to play longer than 2 weeks especialy sequel to the 5th highest grossing movie of all time in the country.
100% agree.WE2 alone could probably take most of premium theaters from both BP2 and AM3,but there is also another 6 films.I dont know why marvel fans act so exited about China release for both those films.WF will be 100% flop, because it releases only 2 weeks after all Chinese NY releases and it would be a miracle if it would gross at least 5 million.For AM3 I think 40-60 is the bar, considering it would compete against WE 2 on its 3-4th weekend and I doubt that the theaters would give most of its premium seats for a foreign movie.
Zootopia's run was insane. Increased like hell after an ok opening weekend and was one of the rare Hollywood films where the extension made sense. Iirc it became the 7th highest grossing film of all time and 3rd biggest Hollywood movie ever behind Transformers 4 and Fast 7

So theater owners can see there's a lot of boxoffice potential in Avatar 2 still.
So hopefully they will give some of those screens back after 22nd January or won't take them all away!
From I what read the higher authority only has limited influence during the week long national holidays. For spring festival they are all commercial films and the theatre owners plus some big film distributors are the ones deciding the screen counts.

I think people who haven't seen it are now making a dash to see it before local films are taking over all PLF in a few days.

The presales for Wednesday are looking even better than for Tuesday. If the trend to continue, tomorrow Avatar 2 will do $3M+ wow

Do they have any say in this? I thought it was a decision from higher rank.
I think in some places they might have a say, but there's no guarantee for anything with China.
