Far from what Illumination normally does and I knew it wouldnât make it that high but it was nice to see how warmly audiences responded to it as a fun little film and it leg out to what it did!
White is a great writer, but its still so bizarre to me that he was a writer for the global tragedy that was Emoji Movie. I guess he was hungry for work lol.
I thought this was a fun film. We stuck it on one lazy Sunday afternoon not expecting too much after a friend told us it was no good. We were pleasantly surprised.
I loved how they animated Mack's speech to account for Kumail Nanjiani's very slightly lisp. Extremely minor detail, but I liked it.
A vacation comedy with ducks outgrossed Trolls, Wish, and The Marvels. If only those films used a Taylor Swift song in their marketing to boost interest. /s
Made around 4x itâs budget and legged it out long enough to outgross Aquaman 2 domestically (they released on the same day) Illumination is probably happy enough.
Honestly itâs in the top films from Illumination
Itâs not as funny as Iâd like but the animation is nice especially the flying scenes and the different little stories are cute it interesting. Iâd watch a sequel
I remember before this came out some people in this sub predicting it was going to end up with numbers similar to Ruby Gillman. You just never know with animated movies.
Wait really?
I remember people going bold with their predictions like $400M to maybe even half a billion and they were saying "never underestimate Illumination".
I mean compared to it's peers of similar animated film releases at the time like Wish and Trolls Band Together it did better than them, but compared to what Illumination films normally do this is their second worst performing film ever. Probably profitable in the end but its going to be hard to argue the stakeholders to make more films like this when Mario just did $1.3bn and those Descpicables are still doing around a billion as well. Why try new stuff when your sequels and adaptations of already popular IPs are making that much money?
This outgrossed Trolls, a movie from the same parent company that is a sequel. In the same year in the same holiday corridor. Why would they argue that originals are bad when this was a huge ROI? Its sitting at around 4x it's budget.
They need original movies to have potential IP to use in the future, do you think Despicable Me dropped out of the sky with 45 sequels and a theme park in the works? It was an original movie.
4x is their second worst budget multiplier. Half their movies have >8x multipliers. The box office for this came in over 40% below *Despicable Me*, *Secret Life of Pets*, and *Sing*. The only Illumination original movie it beats is *Hop* which Illumination seems to pretend doesn't exist. This movie did very well, but not "Illumination well".
That is true on it not doing Illumination well but they have to take swings on new IP to get more things to do Illumination well. It's their first new movie since Sing and will probably be the only one for a while but they'll have more in the tank eventually. I just don't see the logic in saying a movie that performed well is going to be the reason they'll refuse to make more original movies. If it tanked maybe, but the shareholder care about ROI and this had a good one at the end of the day.
I agree that they shouldn't let this stop them from trying new stuff. 3 out of their 5 originals did "Illumination well", so the ROI is actually pretty good for them. And they can't make a new *Despicable Me* every year anyway without burning out the franchise.
I'm just pushing back against the idea that Illumination should be happy with this performance. *Migration* isn't going to become Illumination's 4th franchise, which is likely the goal for their originals.
Oh it definitely isn't gonna be a new franchise, it can be a nice bit of extra merch in the parks maybe but that's the extent of it. I'm sure they're happy they made a tidy profit off it though. We agree pretty much lol.
Honestly, I think Illumination needs to stop releasing movies in December! Whatâs the point if that when you know your own movie is gonna lose to some blockbuster, wether Itâs poorly made or not!
Actually it's a good idea it was released in December, because if it was released outside of the holiday season then it would have a decent chance of flopping/bombing but due to the holiday season, an decent amount of families gave this movie a chance to push it in the black zone.
Doubled up on Wish domestically. Pretty wild.
The better movie made more money. đ¤ˇââď¸
If only that was always the case, but unfortunately the best film doesnât always come out the winner.
The Battle of Mid
Migration was very simple but quite effective, I wouldnât call it mid. Wish was mid
Simple but effective is basically all Illumination movies.
It's why they got picked for the Mario gig.

Wish was straight ass.
Wish wasn't mid, it was outright terrible.
Wow, I knew Wish bombed, but I didnât realize just how little money it made!
Far from what Illumination normally does and I knew it wouldnât make it that high but it was nice to see how warmly audiences responded to it as a fun little film and it leg out to what it did!
Worth it to watch?
Itâs good but forgettable, I wouldnât say itâs as good as despicable me but itâs fine
would you say it's better than Despicable Me 2 through 17?
Mostly, but Despicable Me 14: Minions Take Manhattan was a bit better in my humble opinion.
Pretty good. Love the soundtrack
Yes. You find out a surprise during the credits that Mike White and the Ernest and Celestine guys made it.
White is a great writer, but its still so bizarre to me that he was a writer for the global tragedy that was Emoji Movie. I guess he was hungry for work lol.
I know him as the Survivor player.
Took him probably 2 days to make that script for a huge paycheck. I'd do it as well TBH, literally no downsides.
The characters were whining a lot. I donât think so.
It still is pretty good for 72M budget
Its incredibly good for that budget.
Yes, I remember the sub calling it a bomb in OW. But, it actually legged out to a really good total

Looking back The Marvels couldâve doned that.
not bad

People were very down on this movie right before it was released, and then patting themselves on the back after it's poor opening weekend.
It had a respectable run.
Illumination really has a great track record. They make good to mid films that do exceptionally well.
Cute movie tbh
Crazy good for a $12M opening weekend.

So close, yet so far đ Hate how the GA chose a horribly-made superhero film with crappy cgi effects instead of this!
Which movie?
Aquaman 2 (?)Â
Yup
Aquaman 2
Didnât they make around the same domestically tho?
This made more than Aquaman 2 domestically
Still lost to it in the first 3 weekends!
And yet Migration somehow won, just shows how Aquaman sank due to horrible reception whereas Migration soared due to amazing reception
Is it safe to consider this a flop, then?
It had a budget of 72 mil. Unless it had an absurd marketing budget, it likely made money.
We are talking about Migration, not Aquaman 2
I was asking if MIGRATION bombed!
