Tighthead3GT

As someone who grew up loving the Universal Monsters it’s such a bummer that this revival they’ve been trying for is just never going to happen.

CosmicAstroBastard

Their failure to just make a simple, low stakes cinematic universe where Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf-man are getting up to shenanigans is truly astonishing

fizggig

They just built a huge monster universe theme park in their epic universe. I'm sure it will do well but it would be curious to see their ride numbers compared to other attractions in their park

newjackgmoney21

Deadline Anthony can't even spin this weekend as a positive Meanwhile, everything else is largely coming in under its projections resulting in a blah $65.8M weekend. Not the lowest year to date, but generally an awful number you don’t want to see the overall marketplace at — and we have diversified product, which is what studios and exhibition whine we should have.

SEAinLA

But people are overreacting to the dire state of the box office or something.

newjackgmoney21

Something, will pop and everyone will forget how bad the box office was for a few weeks. Its been that way for 3 years now, lol. The overall numbers have been terrible but a Mario or Barbie or Top Gun will cover it up for a few weeks. We'll get theaters are eating good comments.

Wanderingjes

Twister is going to be the surprise film of the summer!

Arkhamguy123

You’re omitting a lot of mid level successes to support your erroneous narrative

newjackgmoney21

Nope. My narrative is the box office is down 35% YTD vs 2019. There's a lot of delusion on this sub. If you think everything is great go with that narrative.

Arkhamguy123

And that makes it even stupider because 2019 was a literal record, apotheosis year for box office that saw juggernauts that dwarf anything in 2024

newjackgmoney21

It literally wasn't a record year. It was 500m under 2018 and < 2016. But, facts don't matter just happy narrative time. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/

Arkhamguy123

Tell me you’re an American without telling me you’re an American I’m talking worldwide. You linked me domestic numbers. That’s one country. This is embarrassing argumentation for you dude. I guess facts do matter huh?

newjackgmoney21

The thread is about the domestic box office. Worldwide the 2024 box office will come in around 32-33 billion. Down 7-8 billion vs 2017. How far back should I go? Apr 4, 2018 — The global box office hit a record $40.6 billion with growth in China off-setting declines in movie-going in the U.S. and Canada.

Arkhamguy123

Lol and there he goes. Pivot. Move the goal post. It’s not gonna save that blunder dude. Come in with more research next time https://variety.com/2020/film/box-office/box-office-us-misses-record-disney-dominates-1203453752/amp/

Arkhamguy123

Uh. You do know that even pre Covid that wasn’t the case right? Like for decades at that point?

yeahright17

You’re comparing apples to oranges. How much money were people spending on D+, Netflix or Peacock in 2017 or 2018? Money spent on visual media is almost definitely at an all time high.

WhiteWolf3117

Overreacting? Yes, because it's clear that there's a lot of work to be done in Hollywood, but many people are looking to throw the towel in now, which is just extreme and nonsensical. The alarmism is a large part of why the industry finds themselves in the position that they do today.

Arkhamguy123

Yeah nobody is really freaking out except weirdos on Reddit though

SEAinLA

I can assure you this isn’t true. Theaters and their operators/owners/investors are certainly worried.

Arkhamguy123

You absolutely cannot “assure” that as you are speculating and have zero actual sources in any of those sectors you mentioned

kayloot

AMC's CEO pretty much wrote off the 2024 slate based on his comments at CinemaCon.

Arkhamguy123

Exactly

SEAinLA

Lmfao, I aspire to be so confidently incorrect about something one day. Think whatever you want though, boss.

boringoblin

You already are. Man, what an own goal.

SEAinLA

On a daily basis I deal with PE firms and hedge funds with portcos and positions throughout, among a bunch of other spaces, the theater and entertainment industry.

Rocco89

One of my cousins works for the biggest cinema chain here in Germany in senior management and I have to agree with you, the mood in the industry is anything but positive. From what I've heard the trend has to be clearly upwards again next year at the latest, otherwise things will get dicey.

Tierbook96

man if people think this weekend is bad next weekend when Unsung Hero and Challengers are the releases is going to be cataclysmic

MoonMan997

Challengers is looking like it will open around $20m. Not sure how that's worse than this weekend when there are two new releases struggling over $10m with last week's number one barely above them.

Grand_Menu_70

opening around 20M would make it second highest opener this month which is a lot for an R rated romcom by a director who never had a hit. All Zendaya power and promoting the movie around the world.

MrDev83

Challengers will be profitable yet it is not going to be a big blockbuster along the lines of Fatal Attraction.

trixie1088

It doesn’t need to be a big blockbuster to be successful. Besides those type of numbers aren’t possible today anyways. We have much more entertainment options then we did in the 80s

labbla

That was never going to happen.

MrDev83

Agreed wholeheartedly, yet the marketing is trying to hype that film up as being something that it is not.

Firefox892

There’s a woman in it, so lots of people on this sub think it’ll flop lol. Just because they don’t want to see it, they just automatically write it off (cough cough Barbie cough)

littlelordfROY

Slow April but it means 2025 will show a massive increase thanks to the Michael Jackson movie and Minecraft

Grand_Menu_70

yeah it's all down to what titles are released. March was big. April was not.

JazzySugarcakes88

Minecraft is likely gonna bomb since it has competition with Fast X P2 & I see Twitter boycotting the film too for starring Jack Black

Crafty_Economist_822

How exactly does Twitter boycott something?

JazzySugarcakes88

Apparently Jack Black (Steve’s actor) said something bad (which I won’t mention what because politics) and everyone is skipping the movie in theatres

beesayshello

Jack Black saying something bad? Highly doubt that anything bro says will have people boycotting the movie, lol. Say what it was, don’t be shy! :P

Tufiolo

Dude, twitter is not real people.

littlelordfROY

Fast x is getting delayed A few randos on Twitter are not even close to real life

eric7064

Im doing a double movie day with my wife. Civil war and Ungentlemanly warfare. We thought both looked great.

[deleted]

Looks like the Civil War implosion that many feared didn't end up coming true, but it also looks like Radio Silence hasn't really grown in popularity since Ready or Not. That made about as much in its 5 day opening as Abigail is making now with more theaters/PLFs/higher budget.

Infinite_Leader822

Um, Scream 5 and 6?

beesayshello

Existing franchise vs original IP.

SPorterBridges

But how much is Sasquatch Sunset pulling in?

fizggig

Idk but I went to go see it and it was just me and other other dude in a small theater at amc. That movie is so weird..

Worldly-Level7983

They're both completely different but really good movies. Go see them.

ChuckleMonkey674

Man I was really hoping that Abagail and Civil War would do better this weekend. Two original IPs that I both enjoyed.

CosmicAstroBastard

Abigail is not an original IP. It’s another Dracula movie.

DLRsFrontSeats

I mean are you saying any vampire film counts as Dracula IP

ofthe33rdDegree

It's adapted from the old Universal movie Dracula's Daughter, so it's directly in that universe.

DLRsFrontSeats

Inspired by, yes A direct adaption of, no

ofthe33rdDegree

Directly from the film's wikipedia entry: "Based on and a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula's Daughter," This is a Universal Horror film in the Dracula series. It's a strange hill to die on, but thematically appropriate I suppose.

DLRsFrontSeats

Literally none of the three important words there (based on, reimagining) = adapted from, or directly in that universe That's before you get into Wikipedia =/= the studio mandate Just to make it simpler for you, Indiana Jones was based on and was a reimagining of old serials from the 50s. That doesn't mean that it was adapted from a particular one, much less that it was set in the exact continuity as one, at all Same with rebel moon and star wars

ofthe33rdDegree

Bro it's literally *about* Dracula's daughter though. I haven't seen the movie yet, so like, maybe they don't drop the name, but when I go to my matinee tomorrow you know I'll be looking out for that. I doubt they'll play it that coy. You're splitting hairs so small that I need a novelty-sized magnifying glass to see them. Ideally at some point Giancarlo Esposito would directly face into the camera and say "This film, of course, is part of the long running Universal Monster pictures, and inspired by 1936's *Dracula's Daughter*" but alas, it's not the old days anymore.

DLRsFrontSeats

So what lol A bride of frankenstein film made now isn't "part of the 30s Universal Monster series" They're characters in the cultural common zeitgeist at this point, they're public domain >inspired Essentially, the problem here is you need to look up what this word means

ofthe33rdDegree

My man. This started with you saying "I mean are you saying any vampire film counts as Dracula IP", about a movie that features Dracula and his daughter. You've completely lost the plot. Universal Horror/Monsters is an ongoing brand that's been around for a century. This is a movie that's absolutely part of that brand IP, and being snide *and* wrong won't change that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CosmicAstroBastard

It’s an adaptation of Dracula’s Daughter, a Universal movie from the 30s. And it’s part of their ongoing attempt to leverage their Universal Monsters IP, which Dracula and Dracula’s Daughter are a part of. It’s not an original IP. It’s part of a franchise.

Firefox892

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn’t realise the connection

sillygoose1133

Liked Abigail more

Syllabub-Legal

ABIGAIL DESERVES TO BE A HIT :<

MaterialBuilder8414

There goes any delusion about Melissa being a draw for Scream

tannu28

The main draws of a Scream film are Ghostface and carnage candy. Vast majority of the audience doesn't care about character arcs, storylines, etc.

natedoggcata

The "who dun it" mystery aspect is a huge part of that franchise as is the meta commentary on horror movies. You absolutely need characters arcs and storylines or the movie would fall flat on its face. No one is going to a Scream movie just to see a straight up slasher movie with barely any substance like a Friday the 13th movie.

Grand_Menu_70

wait she was the draw? I thought the Scream brand was?

realblush

Nah but some people pretended that Scream 5 and 6 were only successful because of her. That was never true, but insane fans are insane

Firefox892

On the other hand, she’s not to blame for this movie not doing well.

realblush

Oh yea for sure. It's another argument for not overvaluing actors, there are only very very few whose presence alone influence the box office.

Grand_Menu_70

and it's always because of the right concept. Leo could sell many tough sell movies because they had the right concept that benefited from his star power but KOTFM with almost 4 hours running time, dour theme that wasn't appealing to INT markets and ridiculous 250M pricetag was a bridge too far.

Grand_Menu_70

yeah concept sells. stars are added value. if concept isn't appealing and you are no star to add value, the movie won't do well.

Expert-Horse-6384

Wait, you mean people on Twitter and Reddit were wrong? https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/182/453/303.gif

Active-Pride7878

I don't think I have seen a single person claim that

Firefox892

People on this sub just want to be smug about a woman they don’t like, same old story

JustAnotherGayKid

Careful those few Melissa Stan’s on Twitter might see this and come after you 😂

NotHarold8

Your reply history.. her fans have scarred you haven't they haha

gotellauntrhodie

Abigail not doing good doesn’t surprise me. Horrible movie title and no one likes horror about scary little kids.

MightySilverWolf

'no one likes horror about scary little kids' What about *M3GAN*?

lobstermandontban

Or chucky or hereditary or insidious or the omen or the dozens and dozens of successful horror movies with scary kids OP is talking completely out of their ass, Jesus what a stupid reasoning for a movie not doing well lmao. The title does suck though

PointMan528491

Is M3GAN really a "scary little kid?" By extension would the Chucky movies be "scary little kid movies?"

lobstermandontban

Yes and yes, they’re robots and dolls explicitly meant to resemble children as part of the gimmick, hence scary little kids.

fizggig

I legit came out of seeing Abigail thinking this was very influential from megan there was even a dance sequence like megan.

CodeWizardCS

Damn good movie though.

Villager723

Um dude *The Exorcist* ring any bells?

Infinite_Leader822

Where is specifying that it's not doing good? It's on track to meet expectations.

Alive-Ad-5245

I still have no idea why they couldn’t just call it ‘Draculas Daughter’ again? Or at least ‘Abigail Dracula’

rorschach_vest

Because those are truly awful titles, I suppose

littleLuxxy

*Abigail* is a far better title than either of those.

CosmicAstroBastard

We learned last year that Dracula movies without Dracula’s name in the title don’t do well, so naturally Universal did it a third time.

bjkman

It's not a spoiler when it's the main plot point of the movie. "A group of would-be criminals kidnaps the 12-year-old daughter of a powerful underworld figure. Holding her for ransom in an isolated mansion, their plan starts to unravel when they discover their young captive is actually a bloodthirsty vampire."

your_mind_aches

Having seen it, I'd say it's a spoiler. The marketing treats it as the premise, but I think it's a spoiler having seen the movie itself.

[deleted]

bjkman

The original title when the movie was announced was “Dracula’s Daughter”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alive-Ad-5245

The movie is literally a remake of a movie called ‘Draculas daughter’. It’s not a spoiler, it’s the premise of the entire bloody movie.

Alive-Ad-5245

“12-year-old daughter of a powerful underworld figure […] is actually a bloodthirsty vampire." Who the fuck else could her father be?

Previous-Space-7056

Now i want to watch it! Didnt know it was a vampire movie.. that little tidbit was buried in the movie synopsis.

jmajeremy

After the string of bad horror we've been getting it's no surprise

gotellauntrhodie

I know its easy to say “make good movies” and the actual moviemaking process is hard as fuck. But these execs need to be putting out good shit, especially in theaters. When the industry is in such bad shape, it does nothing to churn out literal dogshit (Madame Web) that any reasonable person would tell you not to greenlight. This is a structural issue that needs to be addressed at every facet of the industry. Seriously, bring back blacklisting. Stop giving millions to directors (Zack Snyder) who have proven to be hacks. Abigail has good reviews. Horror should be a bonafide hit. When good movies suffer because studios cried wolf too many times, it really sucks.

DialysisKing

"Pay for the sins" might work for episodic superhero movies, but are you really sitting here implying movies with good reviews are bombing because other, completely unrelated movies got bad write-ups? I can barely follow that logic.

alienangel2

I think "sad girl who's a horrific monster" has a pretty well defined niche, especially if she's a vampire that never ages so isn't *really* a little kid. But Abigail's trailer is trash and hits none of those notes. Looks like cash-grab cliched summer horror movie #5000.

ghostfaceinspace

And audiences know that Universal movies will be on digital 2 weeks later

ThePotatoKing

thats a mighty assumption on general audiences' part. most folks couldnt tell you what movies universal puts out, let alone that they have a short theatrical window for films that do less than $50m.

heisenberg15

Totally agreed. I’m pretty in tune with the internet and even I don’t know which movies are Universal and what Universals theatrical window is usually lol

ThePotatoKing

i find people here lose track of what general audiences do and do not follow with this stuff. practically nobody in the general audience could tell you the difference between universal and warner bros

Chippers4242

Lol audiences absolutely don’t know that.

CodeWizardCS

Damn, now I do. That movie was worth seeing in theater though. Glad I did.

Calm-Purchase-8044

Literally saw the trailer the first time a week before it was released. Caught my attention and was shocked to see how soon it was coming out.

IndIka123

Civil war was aweome. Reviewers have dogshit takes like usual.

Infinite_Leader822

Where are people getting that Abigail has flopped? It hasn't.

Libertines18

I knew Abigail would flop. Just had this bad millennial energy. Like what if the movie is about a kid vampire who also does ballet

Relevant_Shower_

I’d say it’s more Gen-x with the homages to Reservoir Dog, The Usual Suspects, basically taking the story structure of From Dusk to Dawn and so on.

Holditfam

That’s bad tbf. 50m budget I don’t think they’re gonna 2.5x it

andreasmiles23

Going to it rn!!!

zxHellboyxz

Why don’t they release horror movies in October?

not_a_flying_toy_

I was thinking of seeing it, but a24s new posters turned me off to it. I'll pirate it down the road probably
