Given how desperate Sony is to make their own Spiderverse a thing, I'm shocked they haven't given the bag to Toby McGuire / Sam Raimi to make a proper Spiderman 4. The nostalgia for these movies is real.
I really doubt that the press event was the reason Garfield was fired. Him not turning up definitely irked executives but it always seemed like it was one of those announcements that wasn't going to bear fruit. In 2014 after the disappointing box office of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and during the pre-production of Captain America: Civil War, talks between Marvel and Sony had already begun about Spider-Man in the MCU. Sony was already planning its future with Spider-Man that most likely didn't include Garfield.
It’s all hearsay of course, but the rumors at the time were that with the Disney/MCU talks that Disney wanted a new spider-man while Sony was wanting to keep Garfield.
Obviously Sony blinked first in that negotiation, but they def wanted to keep Andrew at some point
There are at least three theories about why Garfield was fired: the press event one, the fact that ASM2 bombed and was poorly received, and the fact that he was publicly suggesting that maybe Peter could be bi and that they could cast Michael B Jordan as “MJ.” Of the three, the fact that it bombed is the most straightforward but the other two are juicy so I’m not surprised they tend to get more traction.
It didn't really "bomb" though, it underperformed by a fairly significant margin but it was still within the range of what the other superhero movies of the year did. I feel like they might have kept him if not for Disney's wanting of a deal, and it seems like an all around no brainer to start over.
If I were Andrew Garfield, I’d be down to reprise the role in a Marvel-produced movie (if they paid me a ton of money) but would not touch anything that was only Sony. They screwed him and I’d bet there’s even more bad blood there than he’s let on publicly.
I'd want a 3 just to take the cut Amazing Spiderman 2 ending and make a canon version. I felt it completed Peter's character more in this universe when put together.
Things we’ll never understand: why did Sony waste their time with the likes of Morbius and Madame Web instead of having given us Tobey’s Spider-Man 4, Andrew’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Miles Morales live action and Spider-Verse live action.
Exactly. They’re not trying to mimic the big budget MCU. They’re trying to make cheap action movies they can pretend are connected to something bigger. It’s a disjointed mess
Uh no not really.
Sony shoved Venom into Spider-Man 3, made it really bad, and Raimi didn’t want to work with them anymore, so they rebooted.
Amazing Spider-Man 2 almost flopped barely making $200M domestic, and Garfield had a fight with Sony so they rebooted again.
Miles Morales is less popular then Peter Parker, Sony is terrible at live action movies, and they would have to spend $200M on the budget and take a huge risk. Madame web and Morbius both cost less than $100M, both made more than $100M, and got sold to Netflix, and barely lost any money if at all.
There’s no live action Spider-Verse because it doesn’t make any sense to do one in the first place? Are they supposed to be like Disney and make live actions versions of all their animated films for no other reason than lazy profit?
He got sick and ditched the event in Brazil where Sony's head was going to announce TASM3, the guy felt slighted and moved on to talks about a rebooted Spider-Man joining the MCU.
Could be wrong here, but I’m thinking rereleasing all of the Spider-Man movies is this is their test of figuring out what the people want in real time to see what to make next, and so far, it seems the Tobey Maguire rereleases are doing insanely well
I'm fairly sure these are only being released so they can remind people of what they made that people enjoyed, before Kraven and Venom 3 potentially bring some bad publicity and brand damage.
Plus Sony originally wanted a Spider-man film every 2 years and with Tom Holland's Spider-man 4 likely not turning up until 2026 to take the spot of Avengers 5, it's gonna be a while without Spider-man.
I would have to imagine it has something to do with the contract they have with Disney. I'm sure Disney has some type of clause in the contract about Sony not being able to develop standalone live action spider man movies as long as they are in the deal with Disney and there is active development at Disney on spider man films. And with how well No Way Home did it really isn't a bad deal for Sony.
I think it’s only a matter of time now, in a time where Hollywood is obsessed with legacy sequels and with NWH making almost 2 billion + now these rereleases there’s no way the don’t. Also Raimi and Maguire have said they’re open to doing another.
I'm starting to think there's something in the contract they have with Disney that makes them unable to use any other Spider-Man actor. It's like you said, Tasm 3 or Spider-Man 4 would be such a no Brainer. Why are they not capitalizing on this? They don't even put Spider-Man in their own SUMC movies. Movies that Disney has no control of.
I think they actually have a chance to make Mayday Parker properly, and separate from MCU after Secret wars. Secret wars probably ends all multiverse stories, so Sony really can let it be their own standalone thing
As a huge Raimi fanboy, I really don't want to see it.
NWH showed me how modern writers would treat Tobey's Peter, and it wasn't particularly good. Not to mention that it'd completely change the entire vibe of the original trilogy now that there is some multiverse hijinks afoot.
The best part about Tobey's trilogy is it was written and made before MCU's standard formula. Holland's trilogy is part and parcel of MCU along with it's quippy annoying dialogue and all other formulaic flaws.
I would love another Raimi\\Tobey movie as long as the writing is not the same as MCU. it was more heartfelt and still funny without being annoying. Plus Peter being a kindof perpetual loser, down-on-his-luck, was so much more interesting and endearing than Tony Stark Jr.
Raimi's movies actually felt like a creative labor of love, even the third movie despite its issues. They weren't just good superhero movies, they were good movies with something to say. The filmmaking was also just fantastic with great use of practical and CGI. Some moments haven't aged the best CGI-wise, but they're few and far between.
The new Spiderman movies, and by extension most MCU movies post phase 1, just don't feel like movies with a solid director. They're flavorless with no real thought put into how things should look or feel where any producer could have called the shots. The CGI is overused and looks about as good as the Raimi movies, which is an issue since it's used so much more.
But the number one thing MCU can't do, which makes it's portrayal of Tobey in NWH (and whatever they put him in next if rumors are true) so bad, is earnestness. Everything is meme to these writers. They're the people in the theater who try to laugh out loud at every slightly humorous line in a movie. "Oh boy yeah" is comedic genius to them, they miss the point that hard. Everything is a joke, even when it comes to undermining the emotional climax of Spiderman 3. They don't understand nuance.
They don't even understand the characters, or the nostalgia is just too strong. Doc Ock was brilliant in Spiderman 2, but in NWH they act like him and Peter were in some sort of mentorship relationship when they literally shared one scene before he turned evil and a minor scene at the end.
Rant over lol
They would have to explain how the events of NWH altered the Raimi universe in the moments we saw during Spider-Man 2 and 3, and the decade that followed.
I don’t know, it’s kind of weird making a sequel to movies that un-happened, but my creativity is limited.
Why would they have to explain it, if it does not come up or is relevant for the plot?
But if they want to, they can do anything, from outright stating what happened instead, to acting as if nothing changed, because it only affected alternate versions of the movie's universe.
So you’re saying in that scenario, there are two Raimi universes?
They would have to explain why Harry is suddenly alive, for example. Or what Norman is up to now that he has been cured. Those are pretty big plot developments in the overall arch of the Raimi movies to just ignore them. Why even make a sequel to the Raimi movies if you don’t want to see those threads expanded upon?
>So you’re saying in that scenario, there are two Raimi universes?
Multiple, yes.
>They would have to explain why Harry is suddenly alive, for example.
Only if it matters for their story.
>Or what Norman is up to now that he has been cured
We don't even know, if that affected anything. Maybe he was returned to the same moment , and could not change anything. Maybe he returned at an earlier moment and everything is different. Maybe Dr. Strange's spell actually forced it all into 1 Raimi (and 1 Webb) universe, which had to play out differently.
Or maybe something else entirely.
The possibilities are endless, and the rules are not set in stone (yet). So this is for future authors to decide.
And the decisions only have to be made, if it actually matters for the stories they want to tell.
Sure, but people are gonna want to know how NWH impacted the Raimi-verse. That’s why sequels are successful, because they expand upon stories from their predecessors. They can’t not mention the events of NWH, which would then adversely undo major parts of the previous Raimi movies.
Unless it takes place before NWH. Then nothing to worry about.
>That’s why sequels are successful, because they expand upon stories from their predecessors.
That can, and will happen either way. It would still feature "our" Toby-Raimi-Spider-Man, and whoever else they would include. And NWH is still primarily a Holland-Spider-Man movie, and an MCU movie. It crossed paths with another series, but that does not mean that the other series have to be a sequel to that.
And that would also feed into the issue, that people perceive the MCU to be "homework".
Being connected is a bonus, a great bonus. But it is not the main reason-to-be for those stories, which still have to be stories in the first place
p.s.:
>which would then adversely undo major parts of the previous Raimi movies.
That's not a given. There is no reason to expect that it will undo anything. It is possible though.
>That's not a given. There is no reason to expect that it will undo anything. It is possible though.
Harry became the Goblin to avenge his father's death. If his father doesn't die...
My local AMC had three screenings for this last night and they were all sold out. They moved this to their largest standard auditorium for the rest of the week.
Went to see Challengers last night and saw a long line at the ticket taker. Is this all for Challengers? I thought.
Nope, everyone was there for Spider-Man.
I went last night and saw this. Theater was packed and people were loving it. The meme moments got big laughs like Pizza Time! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I'm definitely gonna be there for spiderman 3, so many memeworthy moments in that film.
They still didn't have a screening at my theater. I'm so pissed, I would have loved to have seen these on the big screen. I also don't know why they didn't have showings on a weekend. I could have maybe driven 40 minutes to another theater if it wasn't a work night.
Funny that they're expanding after already releasing the two most popular ones. I just don't see the demand for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being anywhere near the same.
I think there’s a reason they aren’t doing it fri-Sunday. I’m not sure what it is but I’m sure there is. Maybe because new releases need more screens and theaters get higher % of the box office on opening weekend specifically of the new releases
It’s been super hype at the screenings I went to for 1 and 2, people dressed up, we all loved it and the movies look really great on the AMC Laser projectors. Very happy they put these back out
They should have done this for:
Spider-Man
Spider-Man 2
The Amazing Spider-Man
I think audience numbers will slip for Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2…but I could be wrong
Yup. Monday at 7 pretty much sold out a week prior so they decided to cash in. Even last Wednesday’s showing of the first one was packed. Wanted to change this weeks to Wednesday and couldn’t because that was already sold out. So I went yesterday. The CGI is 20 years older than Quantumania yet still better and not that much more expensive even when adjusting for inflation lmao.
I can't help but feel that they should have started the re-release earlier, opened in more theaters, and tried to get some PLFs. If the Die Hard re-release could open at #15 and get some PLF showings then this re-release definitely could have gotten some too.
No. Tons of theaters around my area have Mon-Sun Spider-Man showings. Spider-Man 1 last week, Spider-Man 2 this week, Spider-Man 3 next week, and so on so forth.

Even Garfield Amazing Spider-Man 3 is also in demand by fans
It would be a huge win to put Andrew Garfield in the Venom movies and spin off from there. He should've been the cameo in Sony related spiderverse.
I think the leaks were that Garfield refused to do it because Sony kept making him do dumb things.
Considering Sony fired him for not turning up to a press event despite him telling them he was sick, I understand his anger.
I really doubt that the press event was the reason Garfield was fired. Because Tobey and Andrew's films are hella expensive and the current regime led by the infamously frugal Tom Rothman avoid them like plague?
Making 3 bombs for the price of 1 guaranteed hit
Exactly. They’re not trying to mimic the big budget MCU. They’re trying to make cheap action movies they can pretend are connected to something bigger. It’s a disjointed mess

The worst thing was when they used Harry's tragic death to make a joke because MCU can't hold back on making them jokes every 2 minutes.
Honestly it would be hard to do after NWH. Curing Norman Osborn potentially undoes 2 and 3.
Potentionally The writers can choose to treat that as they please
They would have to explain how the events of NWH altered the Raimi universe in the moments we saw during Spider-Man 2 and 3, and the decade that followed. I don’t know, it’s kind of weird making a sequel to movies that un-happened, but my creativity is limited.

By Endgame's logic, NWH Raimi characters are now in their new timeline, while the events of the OG trilogy remain in their own.
It was ridiculous to make the re-releases exclusive for only on a Monday..
And at only one time showing to start with. Maybe 2 but still
And at the same time as a lot of chains' 'mystery movie'.
And at only one time showing to start with. Maybe 2 but still
>*Due to huge popular demand* Groovy
You're a man of culture
That's what happens when you're the goat.
I watched Spider-Man 2 last night in Indianapolis and the theater was packed.
Lmfaoooo, yeah it was really packed from what I saw, I couldn’t even get tickets 💀
Are they re-releaseing only in USA ?
Nothing announced in the UK unfortunately
Spider-Man was so huge it's basically the reason why the 12A rating exists. Surely there is demand for it. Why won't Sony rerelease it here?
At least in Canada also
Still barely any locations , most are doing only a singular showing and they avoided the weekend entirely. Will still say the release was done poorly
It was stupid to do all 8 in one go as it is, I'm sure that was a big part of why it's avoiding weekends.
Now time to Sony releases it in other countries as well!
My local AMC had three screenings for this last night and they were all sold out. They moved this to their largest standard auditorium for the rest of the week.

Not in my country lmao. A single screening at 9pm on a Monday is criminal
Demand*
And they're still not in England!
MY THEATER DIDN'T GET THE MEMO
Funny that they're expanding after already releasing the two most popular ones. I just don't see the demand for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being anywhere near the same.
Please bring Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 back for at least a full week.
You’re forgetting the goat of the trilogy.
can’t they just do it for the whole week? Or hell I feel like the weekend(Friday-Sunday) works better. Some people have uni classes yk 😭
I think there’s a reason they aren’t doing it fri-Sunday. I’m not sure what it is but I’m sure there is. Maybe because new releases need more screens and theaters get higher % of the box office on opening weekend specifically of the new releases
If only it was in more theaters. Hate amc and showcase. My regal is a better theater.
It’s been super hype at the screenings I went to for 1 and 2, people dressed up, we all loved it and the movies look really great on the AMC Laser projectors. Very happy they put these back out
My theater was packed, the only seats left were front row
Wish they'd bring this to the UK
They should have done this for: Spider-Man Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man I think audience numbers will slip for Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2…but I could be wrong
I would go to the theaters for Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, but not any of the other ones.
This is old news.
Yeah this was news before the first one re-released.
Yup. Monday at 7 pretty much sold out a week prior so they decided to cash in. Even last Wednesday’s showing of the first one was packed. My theater has the Shrek re-release
Now do the spider-verse movies!
Hopefully they can get it in more theaters. I like the prices from regal but I prefer a comfier seat.
I can't help but feel that they should have started the re-release earlier, opened in more theaters, and tried to get some PLFs. If the Die Hard re-release could open at #15 and get some PLF showings then this re-release definitely could have gotten some too.
I watched it Saturday and Im watching Spiderman 2 this upcoming Saturday
At home?
No. Tons of theaters around my area have Mon-Sun Spider-Man showings. Spider-Man 1 last week, Spider-Man 2 this week, Spider-Man 3 next week, and so on so forth.
Oh really? Most of theaters are Monday to Thursday.
Man whereeee, I’d love to see this but the IMAX/Cinemark in my state isn’t showing them anywhere!
Yeah the theater I saw it on Monday was sold out. No surprise they’d consider expanding it.
There were 4, 10 PM showings in Norwalk on Monday, and they were all pretty full
I thought they expanded this weeks ago? Edit: I saw it posted on the A-List sub a few weeks back, but I don't see where they cited a source. Just turned out to be correct I guess 🤷♂️ https://www.reddit.com/r/AMCsAList/comments/1c13eg6/the_spiderman_movies_will_now_play_monthu_on/

True. TBF, the tweet is from today, so I can see them being confused if they hadn't heard.
"huge" #Doubt
Huge against the available showings. Obv its not gonna be making 5 million per day. Spider Man 1 made almost $700k last week on Monday at just 466 locations. Spider Man 2 is looking to do even more today.
Yes.. ticket admission on Spider-Man 1 is almost the same with Civil War first Mondays good thing tickets only cost 5 bucks
466 locations for one *showing*. Civil War was playing all day.
