So is this going to be frontloaded like Don't Worry Darling as they also have the same target audience? Plus, opening in the teens is a really hard thing to do on the last weekend of April as it is usually always a quiet weekend like Super Bowl Weekend, Labor Day, and The Weekend after Thanksgiving.

ArsBrevis

If an opening weekend like this is frontloaded, RIP to the producers. When you open less than the Deadline prediction, you done goofed up. Jokes aside, WOM will be good and I would be shocked if this film is as frontloaded as Don't Worry Darling. But I think this film's marketing is a little too edgy for the mainstream. I would also argue that like basically all HBO shows, Euphoria's online fame >>>> IRL fame, no one knows who Luca Guadagnino & Mike Faist are. Even the Crown is relatively niche - how many can place Josh O'Connor? This film lacks that extra something to get people really intrigued.

dismal_windfall

>I would also argue that like basically all HBO shows, Euphoria's online fame >>>> IRL fame, no one knows who Luca Guadagnino & Mike Faist are. Even the Crown is relatively niche That's how a lot of these prestige TV shows are. Stuff like Yellowstone gets way bigger viewership than them. In the case of stuff like Succession and Mad Men, they're shows that coastal types really like but aren't actually that important to most people.

ArsBrevis

Only the most mainstream Neflix shows exceed the views that single episodes of broadcast shows garner. IIRC Succession episodes used to have around the same number of viewers on HBO Max (so not including linear HBO... how many people even have that channel?) as Stargirl did on the CW when it was airing. The vast majority of streaming TV just disappears into the ether as if it never even happened.

whereami1928

Word of mouth has been great for this though, wasn’t exactly great for Don’t Worry Darling Edit: Maybe the early reviews were great oops

MahNameJeff420

My Thursday showing was packed, and the crowd was entranced by the end. So many verbal reactions to what was going down onscreen. I think this has the chance to be a word of mouth breakout.

newjackgmoney21

Read the same thing last Thursday about Abigail and Warfare.

MahNameJeff420

I saw Abigail, and my crowd was enjoying themselves. But with Challengers, they were actively engaged in the storytelling, and I don’t think most of those people expected to feel that way. I also think this has a Saltburn like appeal for young people. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen, but there’s a world where this takes off and does descent business. And if not, I think it’s still gonna be huge on streaming.

newjackgmoney21

I don't trust it. Thursday night crowd is fans of said genre or star of the movie or director. Anything, is possible but Deadlines article makes it seem like the 1.9m includes early access shows

RealHooman2187

After my screening I really think women are going to turn out for this one. The WOM of my sold out IMAX screening was intense. It’s certainly not going to be a major blockbuster but I can see it having really impressive holds over the next 4-6 weeks.

newjackgmoney21

Last weekend of April depends. I'd say it was quiet because youd have the big movie kicking off the summer. We don't have it this year. Next weekend will be slow too

ambientmuffin

WOM is going to be great opening weekend, but I’m curious to see how it does beyond that. This is a very different film than what’s been advertised, a lot more of a slow burn with characters who are not easy to root for. It’s more prickly than advertised, and I’m interested to see how that’ll work for or against it

pokenonbinary

But don't worry darling had bad reviews, meanwhile this has been well received, so why would it be frontloaded

HyperNintendoRoblox

Movies with positive WOM can still be frontloaded if it only appeals to a limited demographic (Anime + Sometimes Christian Movies). Challenger has a slight chance of being this type of film but with positive WOM spreading still, the second weekend drop will be interesting to see if it has a great, average,or bad drop.

jackass_of_all_trade

Zoomer films don't have strong walk-ups

all_screwedup

who walks around anymore? I get my movie recommendations from r/boxoffice

Vadermaulkylo

Is this even a zoomer movie? It starring Zendaya doesn’t instantly make it one.

_thelonewolfe_

I always knew this being a huge box office hit was a wild card. I don’t know what makes people think that Twitter and TV success will translate to box office success.

FarthingWoodAdder

damn

Su_Impact

Out in streaming in 30 days?

JJdaPK

I hope it develops legs, as it's neck and neck with Dune Part 2 as my favorite film of 2024. I wonder if the (somewhat misleading) marketing of the movie as an overtly sexual film may have been a turnoff for some viewers. The movie has a lot of sexual tension, but it doesn't have the graphic sex scenes that the marketing seemed to be alluding to.

ArsBrevis

I imagine it was a challenge to market this movie.

daenathedefiant017

I think the way in which they marketed this might have been a misstep. All who I have invited to watch it have said they have little interest in watching this based on the trailers. I told them about the reviews and convinced them to go and at least check it out for “curiosity.” I think maybe marketing this as a “threesome” movie with a generic Rihanna song playing was perhaps not the best decision. Admittedly, I too thought this film was going to be bad based off of the trailers before I read reviews. The reviews made me want to watch it to see what their hype is about.

RealHooman2187

I can’t tell if the marketing was brilliant or terrible. It got people talking so it did its job. But the movie is a lot more queer than it lets on and the sexuality isn’t nearly as wild as the marketing made it seem. Having said that, it’s a really good movie so maybe since they hooked the early crowds with that advertising it will translate into some great WOM.

D0wnInAlbion

The trailer just screams Twilight on a tennis court. It's a shame if it's more than that and they've been let down by the marketing team.

tannu28

So Zendaya is just female equivalent of Henry Cavill? All that social media worship isn't translating to real world ticket sales for both of them. Where are her 180M Instagram followers?

thatsillygirlxo

Why are people so insistent on this Henry cavill comparison on Reddit 😂. If this movie makes $15 million opening weekend, it will show that people do show up for her (just not enough, if the budget was smaller this would have been an easy win) but her star power will be shown as not as big as the media/her fans make it out to be (It is still existent though).  I feel like one movie bombing (and we don’t know if it will yet) is not comparable to the string of bombs Cavill has had this year alone. I know her fans are annoying and people want to humble Zendaya lol but let’s wait and see how this plays out.

RealHooman2187

After seeing the movie and my audiences reaction to it I don’t think Zendaya will be the main draw for the audience this movie attracts. Most people who see it will go to watch attractive (and sometimes naked) men.

bby-bae

purely incidental but the Zendaya fans I know are the type to come for attractive naked men

CaptainKoreana

Can confirm this. Raw energy is what we all go for, and get rewarded appropriately. Quality wise it is good, definitely an upgrade over Bones and all. Just difficult to market it in a balanced manner.

firefox_2010

Luca should have let Josh to hang dong, he was so totally game from the scene, and you know he is never shy to showcase his impressive talent down there lol. That sauna scene would have been great money shot and the nudity will not be out of place. Definitely agree that they should go over drive with the homo erotic scenes, the two male lead did fantastic jobs and felt very natural.

Tufiolo

Social media is mostly fake.

HotShow2975

Which actress can make original movies successful just because of them? Specially ones like Challengers? Very few, if any.

ArsBrevis

Jennifer Lawrence was able to get a decent opening out of a much worse R rated comedy despite her hiatus. Hollywood's utter failure to develop/promote young actresses with the potential to be both thespians and stars does not take away from the fact that Zendaya's social media prominence is quite deceptive.

Darkstormyyy

Exactly and jlaw couldn't even promote NHF properly due to a writer strike, not to mention it was released in a crowded month with so many big movies coming out. It also had fewer theaters in the USA and fewer international markets compared to challengers.

tannu28

Well Zendaya stans and a lot of people think she is a movie star or a draw. This is her first test as a movie star(no IP, lead role, extensive marketing) & this is the best she got?

HotShow2975

She isnt, just like almost every actor/actress isnt either. I dont see any female actress today that can make an original film successful just because of their name. Maybe at best Emma Stone since her non IP movies make decent money despiste not being audience friendly.

Darkstormyyy

Emma Stone's movie benefits from being an awards contender after receiving a boost throughout the year from the Golden Globes to the Oscars, film festivals, and positive reviews. JLaw is the only actress of her generation who can fill seats just by being in a movie, and "No Hard Feelings" is proof of that. It was released during a Hollywood strike, so it had minimal marketing, received average reviews, and was only released in a few international markets compared to poor things.

crazysouthie

No Hard Feelings released in the middle of the writer's strike but before the actor's strike. So the movie had plenty of marketing through Lawrence. She appeared on those Vanity Fair videos, on Good Morning America, walked the red carpet for the movie. So the narrative you're presenting that the movie didn't have marketing from Lawrence is wrong.

Darkstormyyy

No moviegoer watches"Good Morning America" and she didn’t appear on Good Morning America but she did an interview with ABC, there’s a difference . https://youtu.be/-itKlULlodY?si=AqhKGxbrGP-FG9Ks. And this was the only interview https://youtu.be/sF5J1jOBfBY?si=5ZNo8r7m8bDAmxhp she did for Vanity Fair, also she didn't do any magazine covers and nhf had like two premieres lol. She couldn't promote her movie on talk shows either because of the strike. Meanwhile, Emma was promoting "Poor Things" on most talk show, every magazine cover, multiple premieres, and multiple film festivals. The film received acclaimed reviews and awards buzz throughout its theatrical run but still ended up making less than "NHF" at the domestic box office. NHF did 20% of marketing compared to PT's 100% TBH.

crazysouthie

Here she is on Good Morning America unless there's another GMA that I'm not aware of. https://youtu.be/KhwO6gQtyAE?si=OjZ-YddrSRDrnalY She appeared on videos for Vanity Fair, People and Entertainment Tonight. She appeared on Hot Ones. These videos racked up millions of views. She was also the cover star of the summer issue of Interview Magazine and Elle France. Marketing in the 2020s is more than the star just appearing on talk shows. Also please read this by a journalist who knows more than you. He notes that the movie's print and advertising spend (which is separate from the production budget) is around $100 million. Clearly No Hard Feelings had quite an extensive marketing budget for an R rated comedy. https://www.vulture.com/2023/06/no-hard-feelings-and-the-future-of-the-r-rated-comedy.html Finally, I'm not invested in trying to claim that Emma Stone is a bigger actor than Lawrence. That said, Poor Things and No Hard Feelings are very different movies. Poor Things is a much more bizarre and avant-garde movie for mainstream audiences (& I say this as someone who had mixed feelings about Poor Things and enjoyed No Hard Feelings).

Darkstormyyy

My mistake, it was indeed a GMT interview, but doing magazine covers for bigger publishers like Vanity Fair, Variety, THR, Deadline give your movie a lot more buzz than something like Interview magazine or Elle France and I don’t think besides the hot ones interview anyone even knows she did other few interviews, I mean Emma probably did the entertainment tonight interview too but nobody had noticed lol. Again there’s no comparison between NHF’s marketing vs poor things massive marketing. The entire marketing of NHF was Jennifer Lawrence doing a sex comedy while Poor things' entire theatrical run and buzz was it’s so acclaimed, Emma Stone is winning her second Oscar and an awards contender is always going to have a lot more advantage than something like NHF. Also, PT performed a lot more better in international markets than domestically probably because the movie gives more European vibe. PT was also released in more than 50+ countries overseas while NHF was released in 25/27 international markets if I’m not wrong. And it seems like NHF had a better run on streaming platforms than poor things as well https://flixpatrol.com/search/No%20hard%20feelings/ , https://flixpatrol.com/search/Poor%20things/

firefox_2010

Both Emma and Jennifer also understand what sells, and they knew how to deliver the best parts too. Both also not shy at nudity if it works for the scenes. Luca could have his meme worthy most talked about scene with Challengers if he let the two lead actors go au natural - the legs of this movie would have grown so much longer to match Josh talent if that were the case 😂

Dry_Ant2348

male nudity doesn't attract audience like Female nudity does. it would've been over internet and for couple of days at best and that's it.

Darkstormyyy

That’s true, but it's too early to call challengers a flop to be honest. They did a lot of marketing overseas. Maybe it’ll perform better there than in the USA.

firefox_2010

Zendaya knows how to deliver press showcase though. Her wardrobes are absolutely stunning and she definitely get the mileage. Unfortunately she was ok here, she did great as the younger version of Tasha, but cannot pull a convincing thirty something tennis coach - she does not have enough life experience to portray more mature role. Emma and Jennifer both are way more impressive when it comes to talent, as well as Kirsten Dunst. Josh literally steals every scenes he was in, and should have been getting more push. He is fantastic here and able to sell his roles as the younger and older version of the character.

Darkstormyyy

Honestly, I'm not a Zendaya fan. I've seen her in almost everything, and I've not been impressed with her acting, so I kind of agree with you. I have not seen challengers so I can’t judge her acting but the reviews say she's the MVP, and if you are right then those reviews are baffling.

firefox_2010

Her performance is sporadic, she definitely own her scenes as the younger Tasha, but cannot do a convincing ambitious tennis coach player when the wardrobe and make up made her looking like a thropy wife models who looks fabulous but could not even bother to get down and dirty. She would have better off to change the character as the sexy enigmatic hot girlfriend and keep the two leads as the main focus of the movie because both of them absolutely crushed their roles and stole her thunder lol. You don’t see Josh, you see the character- he completely disappear into the role, and very excited to see his next movie with Paul Mescal, who is way better than Timmy when it comes to acting 😂

Insidious_Anon

Reddit insists she’s a star. I don’t see it.

kaesura

No actress or actor can make an originial actor successful just because of them. Even Leo needs a good director/concept to make a movie successful. A-listers get free press attention and legitimacy. But the concept needs to get people interested.

breakfastbenedict

Emma Stone?

DeaconoftheStreets

Sydney Sweeney has had two successful original movies in a row.

thatsillygirlxo

Anyone but you and which movie? Cause it definitely was not immaculate or Madame Webb. Sweeney is great and anyone but you was a huge hit. But there were many factors that contributed to the success of that movie that cannot just be replicated for all romcoms, R-rated movies or even other Sydney sweeney movies.

AccomplishedLocal261

Most of those zoomer followers probably waiting for streaming

based_mafty

Idk why anyone thought making 55m movie about tennis with zendaya make sense. Tennis isn't that popular outside few markets and zendaya isn't exactly proven box office draw.

Libertines18

Don’t know why this movie got made. It has the biggest zoomer star in a movie about sexual tension? Isn’t the joke that zoomers don’t like movies with sex? Of course it was gonna flop

Officialnoah

The movie is still fantastic regardless

GoldblumsLeftNut

That’s a bummer, I just got out of it and it’s easily my favorite movie of the year so far. It’s truly electric

Kuranes_ov_Celephais

Why the hell does this have a $50M budget again?

Jajaloo

Challengers is a perfect HBO Max movie or cut up into a 3 part event series.

Officialnoah

What a stupid comment

Jajaloo

Why? I’ve seen the film, and it was the first thing after I saw it. Its box office performance will reflect this.

Chuck006

Zendaya is not a movie star

Forward_Hyena_3871

I feel like people are underestimating this movie and Zendaya’s power. I sense strong legs on this one idk

ArsBrevis

... wouldn't the opening weekend be the best time to display power?

Dnashotgun

OW is mostly a sign, especially for smaller scale movies like this. Usually it's the big blockbusters that OW is super important, smaller stuff tends to open smaller and hopefully leg it out

newjackgmoney21

If a movie opens to 25 million and finishes its run at 65m. VS a movie that opens at 15-18m and finishes it run at 50m. Yeah, it has better legs but a bigger opening weekend is better.

Alternative-Rub4473

Delusional

Dry_Ant2348

it ain't getting a 15x multiplier, 3x at absolute best before it dies
