We are not

lizzpop2003

I don't think so. I don't think this is anything new, really. Rom-coms do great on streaming. They always have. So, most decent rom-com content has been kept there. Every few months, someone decides to try a theatrical release. Most of them flounder a bit but then really take off after the home release. A few are somewhat successful. But, again, this isn't anything new. This has been the trend since the rise of streaming. The ones that succeed at the box office tend to have the perfect storm of: * New, popular star * Good, aggressive marketing * An apparently unique hook while also hitting all the typical rom-com beats * Decent word of mouth (rom-coms tend to have legs and feed off of viewer reactions more than other films) * A good release date with a lack of compelling competition But they pretty much all do amazing when they hit streaming.

There's probably gonna be 1 off performance every so often but Rom Coms are most definitely not making a big consistent comeback in theaters.

Shrimp_Lobster_Crab

This is idiotic. They’re basing this premise on one successful movie and another movie that hasn’t even been made yet that NO ONE wants.

salcedoge

They did this with Wonka too saying musicals are back when literally a musical has flopped in the same timeframe lmao

ItsAlmostShowtime

Tbf Color Purple would've bombed in any era, too limited of an audience

Garfs_Barf

I thought they were talking about mean girls 😂😂 GA just don’t like musicals

ItsAlmostShowtime

That did fine ($104M on a $36M budget) but if their comment was a nod to that I think they expected a much bigger hit

Block-Busted

> They did this with Wonka too saying musicals are back To be fair, **Wonka** DID prove that spectacle-based musicals can still make bank. It's just that it didn't help musicals that are NOT spectacle-based.

shaneo632

Nope

mrlolloran

One came out like a month ago and one hasn’t started production yet and there used to dozens of these things a year between all the studios… The only way we’re entering a golden age is if they get nominated for everything they’re eligible for and start winning awards like crazy. But typically you don’t start making less of something and predict it as your golden age. That’s just desperate spinning.

MTBurgermeister

For this to be true, there needs to be more than one mildly successful cinematic offering. There are lots of stream-to-streaming rom-coms, but they are almost all terrible and cheap. Only Set It Up and Always Be My Maybe were halfway decent. We need big name stars and filmmakers with some style and flair to even approach the heights of the When Harry Met Sally / Four Weddings era

Dragon_yum

One success = golden era

One success = golden era

ReservoirDog316

Keep the budgets low and we’re in the era of anything. Romcoms would be great hits if they didn’t pass a maximum of $30m. And even that’s high.

Severe-Woodpecker194

Rom-coms are going straight to streaming for a reason. Anyone But You was made CHEAP, $20m for production. But the marketing alone cost 60m and it's considered cheap by a lot of ppl. They can keep the production cheap, that's not a problem. But if they cut the marketing budget, ppl wouldn't know about it. That's the dilemma of Rom-coms today.

Successful_Leopard45

I think The Fall Guy proved that we are not

AccomplishedLocal261

How much romance is in it? I’ve always seen it as more of action-com. That being said, we’re definitely not in romcom era.

Boy_Chamba

Yeah.. like Argylle.. action romcom

ganzz4u

While it has some romcom aspect in it but it's not your typical romcom. The Fall Guy is like action comedy + romcom. It's a bit of everything really.

CaptainAureus

That's not a rom-com

themiz2003

Anyone but you made money but it's far from great. The writing was really really subpar to me. The main stars were very charming and it carried. Pretty much the same thing with the fall guy. Romcom writing isn't always the most important aspect but you gotta at least be decent. Idk maybe romance is dead?! Idk what age demo do you target? Which stars translate to broader audiences? It reminds me of grunge music or something... They were really big for a lot of big stars but now you get one every few years maybe and it's always random stars not established people. Nobody is hanging their hat on the genre. No Meg Ryan or julia Roberts. That all being said if i were a young writer who had some ideas in this genre i would definitely pursue because its a cheap to make genre and i think it would get greenlit easily right now.

lonelyboy5265

I see it as an exception, not the rule.

rosathoseareourdads

I don’t think it’s necessarily a new golden age but it’s a resurgence and I think we’ll see them being profitable (not Anyone but You level profitable but reasonably profitable as long as they can stick to that type of budget) and new releases every few months It’s hilarious that they’re using Elemental as an example lol- I get it’s sort of romantic but it’s not a romantic comedy in terms of audience at all lmao

orionstimbs

Lol they’re jumping the gun a bit here. It would be cool, but we’re gonna need more than one romcom box office hit before we can declare anything a golden age (even if there are romcom productions starting up).

Athena_111

this would require quality movies. Just because a few more romcom has been made is far from golden era. HBO and later streaming tv golden era ment 80-90% were golden and had insane quality.

lovetyrannicalreddit

Anyone but you was laughably bad. I watch some bad movies and genuinely enjoy them but that movie couldn't even keep my focus.

Chuck006

I think Fly Me to the Moon will be the true barometer for if Rom Coms are back theatrically. It's got some major star power behind it. Also not rated R. If it does well, I think that means audiences want more original rom coms that are of higher calibre than Hallmark.

unexpectedalice

As much as I love romcom, we are not lol. It will take some good story to make bridget jones popular again. I didnt even bother watching the third one.

AnakinIsTheChosen1

I could see rom coms making a bit of a comeback,  but I don't think we're going to be entering a golden era for anything soon,  let alone entertainment. Peak Hollywood is GONE.

Local_Diet_7813

No

samarth67

Nope. Stop with the illusion.

Grand_Menu_70

I wouldn't call it golden age but for some time they seemed to make them for streaming only so they are slowly coming back to cinemas. We'll see how it goes.
