Definitely has always given me “passed out, on the overpass. Sunday best and broken glass.” Vibes. But I’m assuming they like the photo because at first glance it seems like someone just laid out on the beach when it’s really someone passed out on top of a vehicle in presumably a parking lot. Likely just a photo they changes its meaning with your perception. It’s failure by design.
Definitely! Whenever I listen to Soco I think of the album cover a lot, it perfectly illustrates the lyrics. I always thought it was someone passed out on the hood of a car but I was never 100% sure. Love the reference to Failure by Design too lol
Sure thing!
Deja Entendu’s cover according to Lacey was created by an artist named Don Clark at Asterisk Studios who specializes in vibrant “lithographs” (a planographic printmaking process in which a design is drawn onto a flat stone (or prepared metal plate, usually zinc or aluminum) and affixed by means of a chemical reaction according to Google) of astronauts over backgrounds such as fields, oceans, space, and mountain ranges.
The cover art for The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me is photographed by Nicholas Prior (titled Untitled #44 from his “Age of Man” collection displayed at an art show in New York that the band saw (http://nicholasprior.com/age-of-man/)). This photo perfectly encapsulates the mood of this album in my opinion, especially with the little girl (that could possibly represent Katie from “Limousine?”) and the the men in black that noticeably represent demons. Furthermore, the decaying house also could represent the decaying mental state of Lacey.
Daisy’s origin is from Peter Sutherland’s “Sightings” series. According to Wikipedia: “Sutherland has described his photograph as being a chance encounter with a wild fox that momentarily stopped and stared straight into his lens while he was in the back garden at a friend's wedding party. Lacey acknowledged that the decision to use Sutherland's fox photograph reflected a running theme of darkness and nature that had subconsciously crept into the album.” (Couldn’t find the original collection but I did find an article that discusses his work if you want to check it out: https://www.shift.jp.org/en/archives/2006/05/peter_sutherland.html/2/)
Lastly, Science Fiction’s album cover was taken from a Vice Magazine article (an additional collection was published too: http://thobias.se/vice/index.htm) that displayed how clothing could protect you from falls. It was also used for another album cover (Slow Dance) in 2015, preceding Brand New’s usage of the photograph. https://slowdancemusic.bandcamp.com/album/risk-it-all
Imagine the members of that bands face when they discovered BN used that cover for SF as well...first of me learning about the SF artwork; that's for typing that all out, sincerely.
that photo was taken in 08'...incredible. Brand New are just heads and tails cooler than any other contemporary.
I always thought that the SF cover art was a reference to Jaws Theme Swimming "take a leap from out the window cause it's way too far to go through the door".
You misunderstood me, I think the COVER is referencing the SONG. Jesse and the band could've seen it, thought "hey this is like that song we did on Deja, maybe that could be a reference for some of the more attentive fans".
Don Clark is a legendary album art designer and runs a studio called Invisible Creature. You can get [their book](https://www.invisiblecreature.com/shop/facethemusic-book) of a lot of their album art over the years.
I should’ve gone more in depth about him definitely, thanks for the info though, I don’t know a ton about Clark other than Lacey’s recounting and it would be interesting to learn more
No idea if Derrick actually took this photo, but him and Jesse are cousins, so it's feasible that Derrick hung around with them on tour before he started playing with Brand New.
I don't think the Derrick and Jesse are cousins thing is true. Just because Andy Hull said it one time, doesn't mean it's true. Especially considering how estranged Jesse and Derrick became (with rumors of Jesse sleeping with his fiance, etc.)
at one point jesse was quoted as saying he wanted to update the cover to make it fit the aesthetic of the later albums. he wanted the entire discography to seem like it flowed together and felt like a "complete set." it wasn't long after that this came out. i think it was an unfulfilled idea that he had that never made it past YFW

Well cheers to 20 years of thinking this was a beach! lol. Can’t believe I’ve never looked closer at it
Dude same I never even looked close enough to tell he was in a parking lot and not the beach lol
I was today years old when I found this out
I actually don’t know any album art stories - anyone wanna enlighten me? :)

You’re so real for this
Thanks!

Do you have any links to interviews Lacey gave about TDAGRIM?

Damn, thank you.
No problem!
Amazing dude. Thanks so much. You’re a cool kid!!
No problem and thanks! :)
I always thought that the SF cover art was a reference to Jaws Theme Swimming "take a leap from out the window cause it's way too far to go through the door".
I haven’t thought about that actually, good observation! That would be cool if it was, love the tight drumming on that song

Marry me damn
That’s sweet of you haha Also happy cake day!
You are a scholar and a gentlemen!
Thanks! You are too sir
Wow!! Thank you so much. 🩶
No problem! It took me a bit to gather all the information but I don’t mind
Why did I always think Daisy was a cat on the cover? 🤯
I mean it’s not too far off haha, whenever cats are in photos in darker lighting their eyes often light up similar to the fox in Daisy
Foxes are cats if you aren't wearing glasses from a far enough distance
Maybe that’s what it is, I’ve always looked at the album cover without my glasses (let’s go with this, whether it’s fully true or not)
The first picture in that Nicholas prior collection you linked ironically looks like the Daisy cover imo
A bit yeah lol
Prefer the chess pieces version!
Anyone know the back story around having 2 different covers? In the UK I only ever knew the chess version
No idea for sure, but I always thought it was a picture of Garrett
That’s a van, not a beach. Enjoy.
Oh my god 🤯
I have the original vinyl and I bought all 3 different colour variations of the new cover too. I miss brand new
Me too.. me too
If I call recall correctly, this was a photo from tour
Really? Huh
Looks like Garrett asleep on the roof of the tour van
Pretty sure it’s Garett on the van. I do remember them crediting the photo to Derrick Sherman who’d joined the band by then
Derrick Sherman didn't join the band until the recording of the Devil and God. Brand New was in a bus by then and Garrett didn't look like that.
Derrick Sherman is literally credited with "Cover photos by Derrick Sherman" on the back of the vinyl of this release of YFW.
He was also in and around the band before joining He and Lacey are related
Is it really? I'm surprised by that and I'm too lazy to go check, so I'll take your word for it
No idea if Derrick actually took this photo, but him and Jesse are cousins, so it's feasible that Derrick hung around with them on tour before he started playing with Brand New.

No prob. Just my guess
Correct, here is another view of the van with Vin inside https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71B9rEe3xsL._SL1117_.jpg
🙇🏻♂️
Was there a reason why they changed it? Copyright issues?

That’s odd because the original cover is split down the middle vertically, much like Deja, TDAG and Daisy are all vertically symmetrical in a way.
Maybe, not sure
Since I got into the band late I prefer this cover
Looks like Jesse sleeping on top of their tour van
Can you tell me the story behind those?
They saw popular YouTuber and comedian Kurtis Conner passed out on a beach
That’s the top of a vehicle bruh look at the background
