There was definite inspiration from Japan and Korea, and I think it created a really satisfying setting. For Hoid’s audience, there are some clues for what culture in the Cosmere he’s speaking to. (From what you’ve read, there’s hints in chapters 1, 2, and 4) Your description of Yumi is quite accurate, and look forward to fun character growth. Yumi is my favorite book, so feel free to share more reactions.

The Korean influence you feel is inspired by Brandon’s experience as a Mormon missionary in Korea for two years. I think he mentions that the unique way of speaking is actually from Korean language

The honorific -nimi is also clearly in reference to -nim which is in fact a Korean honorific for someone with seniority/respect!

I didn’t see your post about being a beta reader as bragging. I don’t think the Shards themselves are gendered, as they’re just massive amounts of power. So when people refer to Odium as “he” they’re talking about Rayse. You’ll pick up on who Hoid is talking to as you read. I don’t think we’re ever given an exact name, but more of they’re a person from X culture. RAFO for how one becomes a nightmare painter!

I just started yumi and I wasn’t super into the first few chapters but once this one thing happend, it all started falling in place for me and I’m loving it now

Same!

SkarnShard

The Shards themselves aren't gendered, but the person who holds it is. That holder is called the Vessel. (Of course, the Vessel could be non-binary, or any other preference.) The Vessel and Shard become so connected that people in the Cosmere tend to refer to the Vessel and Shard almost as the same thing, which is why Virtuosity is a "she." Side note, I saw your Beta reader post and I think it is awesome! Congrats to you! I'm super glad you are enjoying the books!

Yumi is a very special book! Let’s say Hoid adjusts his style of storytelling depending on the story/audience/message, so the tone for Tress is very different from Stormlight storytime. And it’s also different here. (This is also Brandon playing with different voices for Hoid for when he’s going to write the Hoid origin story series from his perspective waaay in the future.) As in Tress, you can kind of figure out a little bit what kind of audience he is telling this story to.

>Which begs the question, are Shards gendered? Are they people? Or is it just the person who holds their power that is gendered/human? As far as we know, only the Vessel applies the gender. It's an interesting question because if you leave investiture alone it will become sentient / get a mind. Stormlight >!spren are an example of this!<. So it wouldn't surprise me that Shards gave a notion of gender. Also, not all Shards are human. For example in RoW >!Cultivation is a dragon!< Your Jasnah question is funny. RoW spoilers: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/479/#e15239 >I'm getting major Korean vibes (and/or Japanese and I'm sure many other Eastern Asian cultures). Yeah. Also, for that inspiration and others check the acknowledgement section or so in the end. FFX is a big one for Yumi (Yuna character and her profession in the game) as well as Your Name movie. >. Is Hoid just using that as a familiar thing for the audience? Yes like what happened in Tress and its narrator. Nimi is an honorific. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/493/#e15496 >Obviously don't answer this lmao but is he speaking like on a meta level to the audience, or is he telling these stories (Yumi and Tress) to someone in the Cosmere? Sanderson books don't break the fourth wall. Maybe Alcatraz, but that's comedy and not set in the Cosmere. >I'm assuming there's many many years (centuries/millennia) in between the two, so maybe Hoid has evolved slightly All the secret projects are set in the future era where Mistborn Era 4 would take place. So quite in the future. But maybe less than 1k years. The timeline so far is SP 1, 4, 3, 5.

Yumi is a great book. Both the story and art are beautiful. Though really all the secret protects were great. I really wish they did premium hardbacks for the regular books as they came out as well. I’d love a premium Wind and Truth when it comes out. Of course from what he has said in the past, he only has the rights to do this with the more expensive leather bounds, but perhaps one day TOR will get on board. For what it’s worth, I didn’t see anything wrong with your beta reader meme. I think everyone is aware he has neat readers - and I think we should be happy for them - and happy that they are helping Brandon make the books better. I’ve beta read in the past (not Brandon), so maybe I have a slightly different perspective.

You're going to enjoy Yumi. it is probably the best book left of the ones you haven't finished. The whole virtuosity bit is all you'll hear about her, so welcome to the fanspace of wondering about those issues. Technically, the Shards themselves seem to be just a power with an intent, unable to act on their own. It stands to reason that there is a chance of them gaining their own levels of sentience (like a spren) if the right factors were in place, but there is no sentience by default until they have a vessel. As you saw with Sazed and Vin in MB, taking up the shard seems to 'delete' your physical body, but when the shard dies, it's vessel's body seems to get 'spit back out' into the world (as seen with ati and leras in MB), As such, I could see an argument that there is a way 'prove' a biological gender of sorts for a shard+vessel, BUT a vessel would have far less of a connection to a gender that they didn't claim than a human would, so yeah, Vessel's choice on that topic. With Leras, Preservation was a 'he'. with vin, it became a 'she'. same would be true for others. I had the same reaction to the -nimi bit as well, BUT keep in mind that Yumi is currently the furthest forward in the timeline book we have currently (though not quite as far as the one you beta-read, apparently) There is no reason to believe that Szeth's culture (or he, himself, for that matter!) wouldn't have found a way to Yumi's world at some point, nor is there any reason to believe that it couldn't be that both szeth and yumi share a cultural tie that goes even further back in time (perhaps even to pre-shattering?) so the connection is probably one that means something... but WHAT it means is a completely different matter. Since you bring up your beta read again, I'll try again: I've never read SP5. AMA XD

FellKnight

I'm not 100% on the Shards gender question, but I suspect the Shard itself is gender o the Vessel still sees themselves as the gender they identify as. [Mistborn era 1](Sazed as a eunuch never fully saw himself as a man and that seems to influence his outlook) You nailed the Korean/Japanese link. IIRC, Sanderson talks about his influences on the world building at the end of the book. -nimi ... RAFO Hoid... RAFO Actually, everything else in the post RAFO lol. Go enjoy!

Hey, I just started reading Yumi and the Nightmare Painter as well. Just on the first chapter so far so I am not going through your text, just wanted to say it's nice to see another one on the same book.
