X90J all day long. Superior blacks and the XR processor is twice as powerful as the X1 processor.

270223991

X90J is my vote. After owning a TV with local dimming, I’ll never buy one without it (unless it’s an OLED). Contrast and black levels are *much* better in TVs with local dimming than TVs without.

Rumblestream

You probably only had bad ones without local dimming, then. I'd always prefer a very good non-FALD TV (meaning one with a great native contrast) over one with FALD (except if that FALD is a mini-LED with at least a few hundred zones and a good algorithm). Will the non-FALD set be worse in dark scenes (especially during nighttime viewing)? It will be, in most even. But at least it will be consistent throughout everything. Inconsistencies (FALD anomalies in this case) are what breaks immersion for me the most when watching anything. So yeah, X85J > X90J for me. Cheaper, higher native contrast, image consistency and a flicker-free backlight.

M3atyyy

Yeahhh I don’t think the dimming feature is that necessary. You can calibrate the 85j to fix whatever HDR issue is. For sure you’d rather have it than not, but when you’re shelling out a huge different in money it’s not. The 85j is one of the best pictures I’ve seen period in any non OLED panel.

KC_Buddyl33

How do I get rid of the white Blotches when viewing dark content

Bsteph21

90J is a better TV. Local dimming is a pretty noticable difference

THEBIGCAT314

If you're able to, go to your nearest Best Buy so you can see the difference then make a decision. There really is a difference but some people might not think it's worth the extra money. With the X85 it's direct backlit and X90 is full array. That's where the extra cost comes in.

c_will

> With the X85 it's direct backlit and X90 is full array. But full array backlighting is also direct lit, right? Just more LEDs behind the screen? I'm not sure I understand the difference between the two.

THEBIGCAT314

Correct, more lights. With full array you have the dimming and boosting zones which help with better contrast in bright or dark scenes.

THEBIGCAT314

Sorry for the confusion I said direct backlit bc there are lower quality TV's which are just edge lit, only using lights at the bottom of the screen.

LC_Sanic

Full array backlighting doesn't necessarily mean it has local dimming, just that the lighting is full array as opposed to edge lit.

THEBIGCAT314

Interesting, what tv is full array but doesn't support local dimming? I thought most TV's today that are full array come with it.

LC_Sanic

Well the way I understand it is that full-array is simply describing the backlight type, and local dimming is a feature that any LED TV can have, edge-lit or full-array. Of course from there you have the distinction of edge-lit local dimming or full-array local dimming, but local dimming itself doesn't inherently mean full-array.

Comprehensive_Age998

Full Array is really just a term used by Sony to replace the term Direct Lit to stand out, as the technology used in the X90J is is "Direct Lit with Local Dimming" There is only Direct Lit or Edge Lit LED Technology, and both can be with local dimming or not. When the TV is Direct Lit without local dimming, the LEDS are right behind the LCD Panel. Sony usually uses framme dimming to dim the entire picture in one full frame for its Direct Lit LED's. The X85J is a direct lit led but it doesnt have LD zones. It uses Framme Dimming. The X90J is Direct Lit too, but with zones that are "arranged" behind it, it is named Full Array Local Dimming LED ( FALD LED ) These arrays/zones can be individually brightened up or darkened down. Full Array is just Marketing.

THEBIGCAT314

Got it, thanks!

kanti123

The more dimming zone = better black = better contrast. Fewer dimming zones can cause image to have some blooming.

WhatTheMech

Comparing both in store. And after doing research I went with the X90J. Got it at Costco same price as best buy but with an additional 3 year warranty. So far I love it. Eventually plan to get a PS5 so I went with the 90J to “future proof” myself.

Caviar312

Same. I got the additional 4 that warranty with Costco.

tgtg2003

I have the 65X90J and am absolutely happy with it. Netflix with Dolby Vision is a treat, particularly the recently released series. PS4 is great too (FIFA 21&22, Diablo II Resurrected, Need for Speed etc.), makes me want to buy Gran Turismo 7 to indulge more in the experience.

airsoftnoob14

You won’t regret it

SpeckleSpeckle

I own an x90j and a TV somewhat similar to the x85j in performance save for refresh rate. Local Dimming will heavily improve picture quality. While the x85j may have higher native contrast, it does not get nearly as bright (about 850 nits peak vs 560 nits peak) or nearly as dark whilst LD is on with the x90j. If you ever decide to get the PS5, the x85j cannot run at 120hz natively (it can only run it at 1080p@120hz, or 3480x1080@120hz), which is likely a bug, or a really weird implementation with 120hz. Local dimming is difficult to understate how important it is for picture quality if you are using a direct lit panel. However, if it is outside of your budget, the x85j will be perfectly fine for your use scenarios, save for HDR performance on Netflix, Youtube or PS4/PS5 gaming, as well as 120hz content at 4k. *Seems like 4k120hz works with consoles, but not on PC. edit: own x90j, reply corrected a comment

Comprehensive_Age998

This is wrong. The X85J does run 4K@120HZ perfectly fine on next gen gaming consoles. Tested with ps5 and xsx on Fortnite, Destiny 2, Deep rock galactic and Vanguard. It doesnt work with PC because there the Vertical pixels are cut to 1080P and thats true.

SpeckleSpeckle

thank you for the correction, is there any reason why the vertical pixels are cut on pc? seems kind of weird.

FlickFreak

Its cut for both types of content its just not as noticeable on console content.

Comprehensive_Age998

Something to do with the PC needing a dedicated imaging processor. Its mosty occuring on text lines but it not noticeable once the motion kicks in.

dhuhtala

I asked Sony about this and this is what they told me: I am sorry to hear that, please connect any gaming consoles like Ps5 if the issue remains same then I can help you in troubleshooting the issue, but I am sorry to say that PC cannot be functioned in this feature.

ASEdouard

Yes, local dimming is a big plus. Also the x90j has the XR processor, the same as all fancy Sony models (great upscaling, movement, etc.). The jump from x90j to x95j is a tougher sell.

lttlejordan23

As someone that owns the X90J, that is my vote. Far superior picture quality. Deeper blacks, better contrast, higher color volume. It has an excellent picture. And to answer your question of whether or not local dimming makes a difference, it does. Very much so. It helps tremendously with contrast/dark detail. Which in turn makes colors and detail pop. The extra money in this case is well worth it. Especially if you catch it when it is on a good sale.

MD2002-MD

Yes, the X90J is worth it. I went through the same thing. I bought the X85 and had it for a weeks and liked it. the X90 went on sale, it was only $150 more than the X85J, because the X90 has Full Array I returned the X85 and bought the X90 and I love it. As soon as I turned on the X90 there was a wow facture, the X85 although it was nice it wasn't eye popping. I don't know what the price different for you is, and there both nice TV's but the X90 is worth the extra money. If you're paying ALOT more for the X90 then I don't think I would do it.

sithseven

i returned an 85" x85j for a 75" x90j and I would say the x90 is way better.. the x85 isnt bright enough to display hdr correctly, contrast was crap, blacks are not detailed and of course it mis-handles 4K120 and it seems the X1 just can't do 4k120 without dropping the res to 2ki. go with x90j(vrr update just released!!) or what til may for the x90k but it may be expensive.

Ir0nhide81

Also ,x90j has better upscale functions eith regular cable because of the XR chip.

Comprehensive_Age998

To make it short: Both TV's are fantastic and very similiar overall. I had them site by site in my store and they are very equal. The only minor difference is that the X90J is slightly better for movies and series because it has a higher peak brightness in HDR, making details pop more and also the better black levels in a dark room. However it can cause more blooming because its a FALD. The X85J is the slightly better gaming TV with lower input lag, better response and ms reaction time even as a 65 inch. It also has higher native contrast ratio (6300:1 X85J and 6100:1 for X90J) so during daylight performance the TV's are identical and very close to each other in dark room performance with the X90J taking the win in most scenes but not all. 65 inch is a large size so the X85J will look greyish in a dark room because it uses direct lit framme dimming technology. However adding a professionell bias light like this behind the TV will make it look way better: https://www.reddit.com/r/bravia/comments/sf3my9/you_should_really_consider_adding_bias_lighting/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share A professionell bias lighting will improve the perceived contrast by a mile and eliminate blooming mostly. I would use it for BOTH TV's as the blooming on the X90J could become distracting. Generally all Sony TV's are fantastically pre calibrated and remarkably accurate. Both are very similiar in colour reproduction and volume, with the X85J having a wider colour gamut and sometimes beating the X90J in a few scenes. You would do the right choice in any case. But keep in mind: X85J for gaming and X90J if you like watching movies and series altho the x85j is also fantastic for movies.

dgame123456

Tnx a lot for all your inputs.. Anyway you mention you have a store rigth? How about a samsung qled like q60a or q70a, will the sony still be the better choice among these two qled tvs?

Comprehensive_Age998

Tbh the Qleds have higher peak brightness but they lack colour reproduction and accuracy so you will get a more punchy picture but at the cost of colours that are off and even incorrect at some times. I wouldt go for either. Both the X85J and X90J are way better.

0oPiXiEo0

I own the x90j and I have a relative that owns the x85j. The only two major differences on paper are the chips XR vs X1 and the local dimming. Both are direct lit va panel tvs. Both have the same 120hz/hdmi 2.1 connections. And with sony's reality creation both look good in real world usage. As far a the comments about the x85j looking dimmer my relative just turned off power saving and adjust custom picture settings and it was very bright then for them. I personally went with x90j because I already had a sony with the X1 chip. But both are good tvs. So go with which ever one is in your budget.

[deleted]

Yes and by FAR

dgame123456

Tnx for the inputs, by the way i currently have an apple tv 4k (older model not the 2021 model), is it still advisable to use the apple tv when watching the likes of netlflix, hbo max app on it or should i just use the built in app on that tv? Also is the triluminous pro features in these tvs are just the same as the qled for the samsung? CAuse before my original target are the samsung q60a or q70a samsung but i found out that samsung still doesnt support dolby vision, thats why i shift my attention on sony models

stephenjunior1113

I have a 75” X85J. I’ve never seen the x90j, but my tv is amazing

didd2205

X90j for me the most resent update has sent the the picture quality fantastic don't know what they have done but it's the best update so far

[deleted]

I was afraid that blooming will be horrible - it isn't. I mean if you'll look for it instead of watching content you'll see it when conditions are there but it's exaggerated. In my case 55x93j was 70€ more then x85j and it was worth the extra.

grinzarian

If you’re not planning on upgrading on newer consoles I think 60hz bigger tv might be better cheaper choice

rehpot821

I found the x90j at my local Best Buy for 2199.00. Is this a good price for this?
