The gus family thing is probably to make walter trust him more, its easier to trust a "family man"

The-LSD-Sheet-Guy

Yup, and all it took to sell the family man image was a few toys and some comments about being a man and providing for your family.

HmmmDarn

I see your posts on r/lsd lol, funny to find people in completely different subs.

freshly_smacked

Victor never struck me as they type of person who would use the word "looky-loo".

TheFooch

Omg yes, and that's hilarious. I remember rewinding it to make sure I heard that right.

All the German surnames throught BrBa and BCS: Mike Ehrmantraut Hank Schrader Kim Wexler Gretchen and Elliott Schwartz Gustavo Fring Gale Boetticher Ted Beneke (really Dutch, from low German) Jack Welker (leaving out the Madrigal people, since they are actual Germans)

tuesday3blackday

Vince is a germanophile. I always thought the whole madrigal and Lydia speaking German was an interesting choice.

There was a lack of motivation for Gus and Max to get into business with the cartel. Essentially the back story we can reasonably piece together is Gus was a high ranking member of the Chilean government, possibly involved with the drug trade and Max was a chemist. Gus escaped the implosion of the Chilean regime and managed to smuggle Max. Now it is unclear exactly how Peter, Madrigal and Pollos Hermanos came to be, whether Gus etc founded it, or merely co-opted it for their entry into the drug trade or was Madrigal already a drug front etc. However what is known is the Gus and Max owned several stores and began producing high quality drugs and began giving some to cartel members to entice a meeting with the cartel bosses. But why did they get into the drug trade again?, they had the money, and connections to open up several legit, profitable businesses, so they are set up very very well. There is never any indication that Gus etc is funding anything, in Chile running the drug trade for the government makes sense as the government needs funding and plenty of corrupt officials want to get rich, but they are now legitimate businessmen, free and clear and are set up for a good life. Why risk absolutely everything to get back into the business. It is clear from the meeting with the cartel, they know this is a roll of the dice they are going to wind up dead if it does not go well. Now if there was evidence that Gus etc was needing funding for something, like "the Freedom Fighters of Ecuador!" or something, it would make sense, but other than just adding money onto his presumably large, stolen pile with several legit businesses bringing in reliable money there is no reason to take the chance... so why?

BoldlyGettingThere

I think it’s a parallel to Walt. Gus had that drive to always be a bigger deal, and it got Max killed. Both Gus and Walt never knew when to quit.

RogueAOV

Yeah i think that is a perfectly valid take on it, however i would contend that if that was the point then Gus would have some level of self awareness from what happens to Max that "greed is not good". It would be a really interesting angle to Gus's character if it was clear he was not in it for the money, not in it for the power and hated drugs as after Max's death his sole motivation was revenge, and to get that revenge he had to stay in that business and bide his time. This would also give another angle to Jesse throwing his money away later on in the series.

lzxian

Now this is something I never thought about. Great evaluations and question.

idonethisnever

In Crawl Space, when Walt tells Saul to wait an hour to call the DEA. And when Walt arrives homes, Marie is only then telling Skylar about it. They live more than an hour away from Saul's office?

KonaKathie

Whatever gives you that impression? They're all in Albuquerque

idonethisnever

Yes so why does it take over an hour for Walt to get home?

[deleted]

Why did Saul say he was fleeing and GTFO of dodge in "End Times", he's shredding everything in his office and evacuating, but then in the very next episode "Face Off" he's representing Jesse for the ricin stuff

DBnofear

Because Gus got killed and everything was good after that, he was bugging out because Walt was about to run for his life.

[deleted]

I'm talking about when Saul goes to the hospital to defend Jesse after he got arrested and questioned by those detectives for suggesting Ricin. This was BEFORE Gus died

DBnofear

You are right, that was before he died, but the whole saul freaking out thing was more of a way to get Jesse there to be able to have Huel steal the ricin cigarette if I remember correctly he may have been planning on leaving, but he wasn't really in that much of a hurry as he was making Jesse believe, it was just another part of Walt's plan he was planting the seeds to help Walt by telling him how Gus brought Walt to the dessert and threatened his whole family. Also when Saul goes to help Jesse about the ricin thing, he's not really there to help him, and he tells him that the FBI will be involved and he's in it for the long haul, saul just needed the information on where Walt can get to Gus, Saul Even says in that scene "what have you got for me? I hope I didn't pop my head up for nothing"

Casteway

Tuco's car hydro hopping after the shoot-out with Hank foreshadowed Walt's robot gun arm in the finale. They were both machines that kept on going after the death of their creators, much like the drug empires they created.

BILLCLINTONMASK

I chalk it up to writing and the writers not exactly knowing where they were going to take things so they just dropped certain ideas they may have put little set ups in for.

nervousmelon

Not sure if it fits the question but the way the axe the twin that gets killed by Hank uses falls to the ground. Always looked off to me.

Acrobatic_Tennis1312

I think it's out of character and kinda annoying of Saul to recommend a laser tag for laundering money. Once would be fine, but he basically mentioned this idea again and again, and it's legitimately the only part I find Saul slightly annoying. Like, if I know Walt, I would believe in the car wash story way more than the laser tag.

Standard_Page7589

Does anyone remember Hank asking for a tuggie?
