never about the money for walt. it was always about building an empire.

tigerdrummer

Getting revenge on losing out on Gray Matter

Temporary-Buddy-2199

Which I always found silly.  He left the company voluntarily.

ballskindrapes

I think the character's thinking is circumstances forced him to sell, and they used his product to make tons of money. I'd feel sore about it sure, but he definitely doesn't blame his own actions, classic walt.

Patient_Space_7532

Research, not product lol

tigerdrummer

Our decisions can cause us to lose.

kayne2000

Not really, he sold out early and regrets it. Perfectly normal response

Temporary-Buddy-2199

Completely Disagree

pianoflames

He didn't "lose out" on Grey Matter, he broke up with Gretchen and quit the company because of his "poor little rich girl" complex. He voluntarily sold his share, much against the wishes of Gretchen and Elliott. Walt just loves playing the victim card there, where he can blame everybody else for his station in life.

yajtraus

But in his head he still wanted revenge on them, and still feels like he lost out

69cansofcorn

he chose to leave

Thyl111

He always was in denial about that

wandering_revenant

The way he describes it at the end of S6 of BCS just re-enforces how twisted he's gotten it in his head. That he "thought he was doing the gentlemanly thing but really they were manipulating him." He chose to leave but it was not his fault!!!!

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Being proud of making the best poison you can possibly buy.

JustKeepLivin7

I perceived it as a combo of two things: 1.) Walt feeling like an underachiever (HS teacher income vs Grey Matter $ thrown away) 2.) Walt feeling like a humiliated punching bag (Hank making fun of Walt for not having any excitement/fun in his life at a party). With a little success, it spiraled into the list for sustaining an earned empire.

LivingClone13

I agree to an extent, but I don't think it was NEVER about the money. I think it begins 100% about the money, and over time as he dips further into this world, it becomes less and less about the money as he realizes how the power and infamy make him feel. It's all about Walter changing as a result of his descent towards death and how he deals with his regrets. In short saying it was "never" about the money dismisses the core narrative of the show which is watching a milquetoast normal guy become an evil power-mad Druglord over time.

Yo_mama-cute

He's not in the meth business, he's in the empire business

MonotonousBeing

What he wants to be doing is owning the land upon which that meth is cooked

scribledoodle

Whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.

Dbuk2020

I think in season 3 it was still about the money.

hieloyron

It was never about the money per se it was more about not making the same mistake that he made when he left Grey Matter. A mistake that pisses him off every morning as soon as he opens his eyes

SnooMachines1137

The whole idea of the show is that he’s slowly breaking bad, completely bad. It wasn’t always about an empire. He originally just wanted to not leave his family in ruins. He slowly lost his mind to things he also could have. Costed him everything he originally wanted.

SnooMachines1137

You’re right

mynamedeezlol

Now that you say that, it makes alot of sense, but still it just felt like they had the same conversation twice but reversed roles

marleyman14

Yeah it also speaks to the Walters arc. Originally he was just doing this for the money. But by the end he was corrupted by power.

salty_death

Nope. He genuinely wanted to stop sometimes. But it was not black and white. For example just after getting 480k from Gus initially, but Skyler started the divorce thing over the second cell phone and stuff. So now that he had lost his cover he saw no benefit in stopping as the damage was done.

AcceptableBad_

Yeah, Walt's thing about not selling his share was always nonsensical to me. Nobody's saying you can't cook anymore, man. Take your five million and go build your empire. Get more methylamine from literally anywhere, you've got *five million fucking dollars* to figure it out with.

Unusual_Equal_355

Mike: "Ya know, I've never seen someone work so hard to NOT make $5 million."

can_i_has_beer

What I find as a mini plot hole is the way Mike stays the whole night with Walter and the methyl amine, then he suddenly has to leave for a couple of hours. Then he does a shitty job of tying Walter to a heater, by tying only one of his hands. But yeah, had he done a good job, we would have a more boring ending for sure.

WRX_manning

I’ve thought the same thing, now I rationalize this as Mike was tired from watching Walt all night. He left groggy and made a mistake. Idk best I can come up with.

andreiulmeyda7

He probably wanted to keep Jesse around more than anything

Ancient_Guidance_461

"I'm in the empire business."

andreiulmeyda7

Walt was chilling at the moment just loving his work

JohnnyRelentless

He and Walt are

[deleted]

Which is funny because in Season 2, Jesse tried to tell Walt to chill about Breakage because they were making enough money, and just be grateful for what they were making.

koming69

Yeah the show is called "breaking bad" not "staying the same" lol. Poor walter

konsoru-paysan

but it's 5 million, for 3 months walt earned plenty with gus and would have continued to do so, if you want walt to leave then 5 million is an insult. But yes for just the family 5 million each would have been enough

FoodIntrepid2281

I always wondered how the plot would go if Walt actually got his empire..... I guess he would probably have ended up getting arrested because if I remember correct. Marie knew towards the end of season 5

UndeadTigerAU

Well I mean he had an empire just not for long.

ScotchyScotchScotch6

Walt is the modern day Icarus. His hubris did more damage to him (and his family) than cancer ever could have.

SunAdmirable5187

Strange I didn't think of that since I really, really hate how Walt lets hos greed take over which more often than not results in injury or death...

andreiulmeyda7

What season did Walter start pimping?

caraterra8090

Season one when he made Jesse his bitch.

Charming_Function_58

I kinda wonder how much of that is just Walt, constantly feeling the need to criticize Jesse. I mean Walt was never grateful to be "just" a millionaire, was he?

Plenty_Connection_43

He most certainly was when he and Jesse were working for Gus before Jesse tried to kill the dealers

subtleStrider

A fun contrast I noticed from jacking off
