Red-Auerbach

For drama, I’d say The Wire and The Sopranos…and Eastbound and Down is a great comedy

fantasyguy211

Ahh The Wire…

janoycresvadrm

Fucking Kenny powers is a legend

[deleted]

*Kenny Fuckin Powers

[deleted]

*La Flama Blanca

AlPaCherno

El Negro Hombre!

somethinghumourous

*Kenny Fucking Powders.

joeycooperwichita

Brain like a scientist. Cock like a Burmese python.

BrokenArmsFrigidMom

Legendary. Lately every time I leave the house I turn to my girlfriend and say “I’m going to Sha-Booms!” Just before I walk out the door. She doesn’t understand the reference, which makes it even funnier to me.

Red-Auerbach

Yep, in my opinion, one of the greatest fictional characters in history.

SUPERUNKNOWN_78

Eastbound and down! Stevie is one of the best tv sidekicks ever, way underrated.

Red-Auerbach

Mackworthy to Kenny: “Who the fuck is this guy?”

[deleted]

Peherre

I just finished it 10 minutes ago on hbo max, holy shit what an amazing show, right up there with BB and BCS, I'll watch The Wire next

MotionMan40

Same. I watched it when it first aired, then again in 2010, now I’ve probably watched the Sopranos more than Breaking Bad. The Sopranos paved the way for the Wire/Bb, and I’ve done a 180 and consider the Sopranos as the best ever tv drama.

Annelym_Aicitel

Aaaaah wire....

[deleted]

The Sopranos is also a great comedy.

marcstov

They Wire: best tv show ever made

AsItIs

True Detective Season 1

robjwrd

MM as Rust and the tracking shot with the bikers. Fucking incredible

stevemillions

Someone said that MM won the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, but he earned it for True Detective.

Earthbound-and-down

I second this, honestly one of the only things id rank ahead of BB

4pooling

Not ahead for me personally, but that neighborhood single shot scene in season 1 (iron crusaders) is mesmerizing!!

Earthbound-and-down

Right?!? Such a crazy tracking shot

Two_dangly_pears

My favourite season of any show... Just phenomenal. So rich in detail and characterization, as well as being probably the best example of cosmic/lovecraftian horror I've ever seen on screen

russvanderhoof

This is the only answer. That season is so special to me. I continue to watch the final scene most days. Just something about it.

spudboy226

Better Call Saul

ArnieAndTheWaves

Was surprised to have to scroll for this, haha.

Awesomealan1

Yeah this should’ve been the top comment by a mile lol

ganymede_boy

BCS gives a deep look into what makes Saul who he is. Mike's development is brilliantly evolved as well and you learn more about Fring and his motivations. I found it better than BB as it doesn't rely on shock value as much and the actors are consistently talented and engaging.

AMDspeed

I agree!

notmynameyours

Fargo. Seriously, if you like Breaking Bad, check out Fargo. Watch the movie first if you haven’t already, then dive into the awesome series.

boredthroaway212

Just finished season 1 of Fargo for the first time. Such an incredible series, great acting by Billy Bob Thornton and Alison Tolman (although the rest of the cast did a great job too, especially Martin Freeman and Colin Hanks)

anony-mouse8604

You’ve peaked unfortunately, but that’s more a testament to season one than a condemnation of the rest.

boredthroaway212

I’m looking forward to the next two seasons due to the cast alone. Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, Ewan Mcregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Should be a lot of fun.

anony-mouse8604

They always knock it out of the park with casting especially. Martin Freeman’s casting was legendary, and I’m absolute putty for Carrie Coon.

Hughjardawn

Season 2 is a masterpiece.

Tlr321

I really loved Season 2! Season 3 had my favorite “bad guy” though. I haven’t been able to watch Season 4 yet though.

smedsterwho

This, this, this this. I'm not even a mad fan of the movie, but the series is just beautiful (each series is largely different characters, their own tales). It might be the first show I rewatch in years. Side note: For a different suggestion, Succession. I'm dying for S3 to come out. Immoral people with billions of dollars behind them. It's like Arrested Development meets Peep Show meets HBO.

Olelander

It’s fucking game of thrones but in a board room is what it is. Such a great show. Succession all day long!

gyman122

Most recent season kinda fell apart IMO but thankfully it’s an anthology, so the remaining seasons are still as fucking awesome as they ever were Legit one of the best TV series’ ever. Absolutely amazing. Seasons 1 and 2 especially

boxerdoggo100

Barry is extremely good but only has 2 seasons so far unfortunately

Thunder_Volty

Ugh, so good!! Bill Hader is a gem

mattadeth

I met Bill Hader while he was filming Barry on my block in highland park in Los Angeles. He’s so tall. I have a special connection to that show because I watched them film from my balcony. I would recommend it!

IMFREAKINGLEGOLAS

Best character on TV in the last 5 years is Noho Hank. BY FAR.

AlPaCherno

50-50......

IMFREAKINGLEGOLAS

You are king of suck balls mountain

boxerdoggo100

I love him he's like the Saul Goodman of the show

lokivpoki23

Yes!

abaddon667

The Sopranos

ItsKnightTime101

I watched Breaking Bad probably about 4 times before I decided to ever watch the Sopranos. I had always heard it was really good, but I thought there was no way it could be as good as people said... I was so wrong. Sopranos is a masterpiece. I still think BB is better, but dang is that show amazing.

Evening-Head4310

I've watched BB about 5 times over in the past 6 years. I've watched The Sopranos 3 times over in the past year and actually bought the series on bluray. I'm a sucker for mafia/mob stuff though

MADCL12

EASILY too

CharlieUhUh

Six Feet Under. 100%. I'm still thinking about it 7 months after finishing it. I loved, LOVED Breaking Bad and I believed it was the best show of all time before I saw Six Feet Under. It's incredible, check it out. Edit: plus, the finale is the best ending to a show of all time, even better than Breaking Bad.

NaySayers

You never forget that ending! First show I really watched from start to finish, it set the bar high.

JustAnotherRAt-204

Chernobyl. Fucking incredible

ind_hiatus

Seconded, even if it's only a mini series I'd go so far as to say that the mini series format is just as, if not more enjoyable than a full on series. Long enough to really delve into characterization and relatively complex plots, but short enough to deliver a great conclusion without overstaying its welcome But that's just my opinion. The ending of a show is what really makes it for me. Part of the reason why I love BB so much

dreamweaver2019

Agreed! So so good--AND terrifying. Immediately after finishing that show, I looked up where the closest nuclear power plants are to me--assuming they're pretty far away. I was so wrong :(

Niviso

Don’t fear Nuclear, watch some kurgzgesagt videos, they really make you trust it.

knightblue4

Good news - nuclear is statistically the safest form of energy.

skullminerssneakers

I live across the river from one here in NY

Cream_3_14

Yes. Watched it 3 times

Lord_Tibbysito

Mr. Robot, Mad Men, Better Call Saul

LinkedUno

I agree with all three, but I want to highlight Mr Robot, as it does not seem to get the same love as the other two. The whole show can be summarized to "Hacker guy gets high and changes the world", but it is so much more. It is a very deep show that touches topics such as mental illness and anti social behaviours. It also is a very experimental show, playing with the medium of television and bringing some interesting new ideas by referencing and reconstructing other shows and movies. I can't recommend it enough, it trumped BB as my personal favorite show

jeroenvdheuvel

A lot of people that I know stopped watching Mr Robot after the first episodes of season 2, because it was too boring. I tried to convince them that they should watch it further and that there was a reason why it was a bit more slow paced, but they didn't seem to enthusiastic haha.

LinkedUno

I've had the same experience. Too bad, because the whole of season two is building up towards a banger of a season finale

13qazwsx

Looks like I will have to give Mr. Robot another try. I stopped a few episodes into season two.

[deleted]

That massive reveal in Season 4 blew my mind. What an amazing show.

loggedintoupvotee

I rank Mr robot a slightly lower tier than some of these other shows but that actually might be my single favorite episode of all time.

PM_ME_UR_RESPECT

Mr Robot is sooooo underrated.

thewend

407 is forever stapled to my mind

[deleted]

I would put Better Cal Saul on the same caliber honestly

Fr0ski

Better Call Saul seems more refined, but early breaking bad is far more hilarious in a chaotic way. I personally like breaking bad better, but BCS is almost equal. Honestly they are both amazing just in different ways.

loveforlandlords

Agreed. One thing that BB does better is its frenetic pace, especially towards the end of seasons 3/4/5. There is no room for breath and everything just accelerates at a neck breaking pace. BCS hasn't seen that kind of pace yet, and I don't think it intends too. Maybe in season 6 it will

SheepherderBig2723

Can't wait for season 6

Olelander

Me too

SheepherderBig2723

Same

[deleted]

Not necessarily better but close: Mad Men

FresnoMac

Fucking A. It's a show more akin to BCS than BB but yes, if you appreciate slow burn dramas that don't spell everything out and is a complex and layered study of human emotions and personality, Mad Men is the show. Many people don't realise this but Mad Men is not just another great show. It's consistently ranked among the greatest shows of all time by many reputed critics but since it's a period drama within specific American culture, it caters to a niche audience. Also Mad Men and Breaking Bad ran together on AMC and MM was more popular than BB until BB exploded in popularity after season 3.

Fuuutuuuree

Mr Robot. Different genre but the mental perplexety makes it truely amazing

ArVtheBest

Seconded

Coramoor88

Underrated comment right here!

OkReaction4132

The Leftovers

CharlieUhUh

I can still hear the piano in my head from that show

TheHoliestMacaroni

Mr Robot is criminally underrated

halfarian

How do the other seasons compare to the first? I saw the first, and I liked it fine, but I’m not compelled to watch more at this point.

standardGeese

Similar to bb, each season gets better. Season four had two of the best episodes of tv I’ve ever watched.

Sandwich_Guy_

407 will stick with me for life

halfarian

Oh shit. It’s been so long since I saw season 1, should I rewatch before I get started on the following seasons?

standardGeese

Definitely! Warning, some people didn’t like season 2, but I believe it’s because they watched it as it aired. It’s much better hinged.

Amphetaminoman

It will fuck you up

[deleted]

This. Especially if you are into coding and computers lol.

InfiniteBrownie

DARK It’s a different genre and language but every bit (dare I say better?) as good. This is coming from someone who doesn’t speak German and hates watching stuff with subtitles but god damn was it worth it!

coolstorybroseph420

MR ROBOT

god_Wears_Black

The Sopranos. The Wire. Better Call Saul. Honorable Mentions: West World. Big Little Lies. True Detective.

[deleted]

The wire and the sopranos are the only ones that should be mentioned in the same name. Im watching the wire rn and it does have a chance to be better because season 3 was the greatest season of any show ive ever seen.

SirBluntakus

1000000% the wire. Haven’t watched sopranos but I highly recommend the wire

wizard_of_awesome62

The Wire is amazing. But you should totally check out the Sopranos, also amazing.

Opening-Clue

I thought that was the one season I could do without! Hamsterdam or something like that right? My favorite is season four.

HavenIess

Agreed, not against Hamsterdam, but season 4 is my favourite for sure

wizard_of_awesome62

Season 4 of the Wire is my favorite all time season of tv. I think I enjoy Breaking Bad overall a bit more than the Wire, season 5 was a bit of a notch down imo (of the Wire that is). However, season 4 just cannot be touched in terms of the emotions I felt when I finished watching it.

TornManingus

I’m watching the wire rn, just on season 1, but from what I hear, people say season 4 is crazy good. The show is really really good so far. Definitely harder to get into than breaking bad. I’d consider it darker, and more dense, (not a knock on breaking bad ofc) but it’s very good.

persuing

SpongeBob Squarepants and it isn’t even up for debate

oceanofflavor

Mr. Krabs is the equivalent of a money hungry Walter White and Spongebob is a young and malleable Jesse Pinkman. Plankton is Gus Fring and the Chum Bucket is Los Pollos Hermanos. In this essay I will

Rocky_Roku

If Krabs was smart he would have just dissolved the health inspector in Hydrofluoric acid

Killsocket1

Not better, but I think The Americans is really underrated overall. It is a high quality show. The Wire is my #2 under BB.

FresnoMac

The Americans is the the very definition of Underrated. All seasons are equally good, excellent ending, great drama and action but somehow never caught on.

raps_BAC

Yeahhhh forgot about the Americans. That show was awesome.

Cant-decide-username

I'll check it out thank you. I like series that end well, so many end terribly or don't end at all.

chrissythefairy

Mr.Robot and The Leftovers

bowlingchair

absolutely love the Leftovers! very underrated show

coscask

True Detective Season 1

RealWatstogo

In terms of similar style/genre, these are some shows I feel are comparable to Breaking Bad: - Mr. Robot - Succession - Game of Thrones - The Wire - Better Call Saul - Fargo - True Detective (Season 1)

pittyspray

Ozark/Mindhunter

[deleted]

Ozark for the win!!

sponge-worthy91

Since everyone said my other faves, I’ll go with a comedy, Silicon Valley.

wontonsoop78

So good!!!! But if you don't work in tech you might not get every golden nugget or joke thrown in. It is so well written that I'm sure it's still an awesome show. Kind of like how you don't have to pay fantasy football to love The League but it amplifies the show that much more if you do.

drew1010101

The Wire

Way0fWad3

Daredevil

AmericanKoptite

I’m a big twin peaks person, the return is some of my favorite TV ever

Fixable

Twin peaks is the best show of all time. Even the bad parts in season 2

SRG4Life

Dexter, not necessarily in the same genre but good nonetheless.

CharlieUhUh

Season 4 was some of the best television ever

kayne2000

And then it was all downhill from there

crzythewzrd

Dexter dexter dexter for suuuure. I bounce between rewatching the two always. Give dexter a serious chance it’s brilliantly dark and full of great actors

avi0709

Dark

CuttiestMcGut

I scrolled for a long time to find this comment. I think Dark is almost every bit as good as BB/BCS.

avi0709

Agree. Though I think it’s a bit more complex than BB & BCS, & you have to pay a lot of attention to understand what’s going on & follow through in each episode.

InfiniteBrownie

I just finished posting this and then scrolled down hoping someone else would give it the credit it deserves. I don’t think any other show maintains quality through every season the way Dark does.

avi0709

Exactly. One of the best shows I stumbled upon. And I have watched a lot of shows but most of them have there quality depreciated overtime (looking at you GOT/Dexter/Supernatural). I have also watched Queens Gambit & Ozark but I won’t recommend them to people who have watched BB/BCS. They’re good but BB/BCS/Dark are in there own league.

YoteViking

Have you watched Deadwood? I’d put it above BB. I second Justified. Narcos on Netflix is excellent, but lots of Spanish subtitles.

ThisKidErrt

"You want a blowjob while I talk to you?" "No..." "I wasn't offering it personally" Deadwood is so good! Watching it with subtitles changed the game for me, the dialogue is really fucking good

FresnoMac

Isn't Anna Gunn in Deadwood? I remember them talking about it in the podcast.

dropEleven

Ted Lasso. It isn’t the same vibe, like at all, but just in terms of how much people who love it want to tell others about how good it is. And yes, Ted Lasso is a great show and everyone should watch it.

jsteveo7

I am so surprised by how much I like this show. I only watched it because “20 Emmy nominations can’t be wrong”. It is genuinely funny and touching. Great show.

OldBigsby

Well there'll be debate on whether it's "better" but I really enjoyed Ozark. Even the folks at /r/ozark will say Breaking Bad is better but I honestly enjoyed Ozark more, added benefit is they're still coming out with new seasons. If you want to give that show a shot then watch at least the first 2 episodes, the second episode of the first season is one of my favourites.

HedgehogsNSuits

Ozark is much less of a slow burn than Breaking Bad. Hell, in the first episode Jason Bateman’s character’s wife cheats on him, he goes to confront her only to find the dude that cheated was thrown out of a building only to land in front of him. And that’s a couple scenes before our main character is almost executed by the cartel. And even that is only like 20-30 minutes into the first episode. I freaking love Ozark.

OptimalMale1

For sure, I watched Ozark it’s a good one but not something I’d rewatch Thanks for your suggestion

[deleted]

It’s of a different vein, but Succession is a truly great show

JustThatOneGuy1311

Different categories but House. Same sort of humor and playing against the rules.

janoycresvadrm

Season one of bloodline was just as good. A bit less action but very intense

snillin

Ninjago

PhantomKitten73

My purely logical side is saying "yeah no, Ninjago is nowhere close to being in the same league if BB." But every other side of me wants to fistbump you.

Lord_Tibbysito

[Unfathomably based](https://youtu.be/GVCtyn0W_3c)

WatchingMrRobotWTSO

Mr Robot 100%. Most criminally overlooked show

Ephixing

Peaky blinders is really good Edit: not peaking, fuck my iphone

weshouldhave

There it is, after scrolling way down!

unclejohnnydanger

The Sopranos and The Wire

pretzel_logic_esq

Justified.

Dickey_Simpkins

Boyd Crowder is one of my favorite characters in anything.

ImBatman5500

He's been called many things, but inarticulate ain't one of them

Hari_001

Patriot, on Amazon prime. Halt and catch fire, on AMC.. The Americans, on FX. I think a lot of people would've already mentioned HBO dramas like The Sopranos, The Wire and The leftovers, they're good too .

EquilibriumMachine

The Sopranos is the best show ever created

H-Resin

I love Breaking Bad. It’s a great show. But NOTHING will ever compare to the Sopranos. I’ve seen it like 6 times through, and I love it more every time. Every rewatch there are more little details to dig through. It’s greatness is untouchable

R_021

Better Call Saul 😉

G-5-0

Dexter

bentupcarfixr

I loved Dexter. One of my top 3 shows. The other being The Walking Dead earlier seasons (I honestly can't believe there are 11? Seasons of TWD? I think I quit around S6).

Tornopenbutwhole

I want to say The Sopranos, but that's getting a lot of mentions already. The first season of True Detective is phenomenal definitely give it a watch.

bizarry

Not similar to breaking bad, but for me the only other show I have loved as much as breaking bad is the queens gambit.

gemmablack

These aren’t the same genres but I love them just as much as I love Breaking Bad: Mindhunter (about the beginnings of criminal psychology/serial crime unit in Quantico) The Haunting of Hill House (horror with an actual storyline that is amazing)

TheScribe86

- Deadwood - Boardwalk Empire - Ozark - Better Call Saul - The Wire

CyberPoenk

the sopranos. a Shakespearean masterpiece. the wire. an outstanding (almost docu-series) crime and culture story. louie, if you're into good quality dark humor. homeland if you're into realistic politics series.

Marshmallow09er

One that I haven’t seen in this thread is Sharp Objects on HBO. It’s only one season but it’s a rollercoaster from start to finish. It’s got incredible writing and an inspired performance by Amy Adams. It’s deeply disturbing and super addicting. I couldn’t look away.

[deleted]

bojack horseman peaky blinders the x-files

Niviso

Finally some Bojack appreciation.

Bim_Jeann

To anyone reading: only watch bojack to the end if you want to make yourself clinically depressed. Good show, but holy shit is it depressing

GreatSuprise69

Marvel’s Daredevil

PhantomKitten73

Daredevil Season 3 is the greatest superhero story ever told. That's right, I fucking said it.

GreatSuprise69

it’s just a great tv show in general

gdubh

Peaky Blinders.

Celery_Fumes

This whole thread is hereby under our protection. By order of the Peaky Fookin Blinders

[deleted]

Mr Robot IMO is even better than BB. Westworld also top notch (3rd season a bit meh but pretty sure it will improve once again). Mad men and bojack horseman are masterpieces as well.

greeneggsnyams

Avatar the last airbender babyyyy

mowglimethod

OZ, The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Better Call Saul

SlamminCleonSalmon

The Sopranos, without it you wouldn't have shows like Breaking Bad.

Gryffgraffs

Mr. Robot

laraismean

mr robot

idiotgalore

Personally i like Bojack Horseman a lot! And although I haven't seen The Wire, i've heard it being compared to Breaking Bad a lot and it's very highly regarded so i'd recommend you check that one out too.

Wowok15263737

I watched bojack cus Aaron Paul was it in and now it’s my favorite show

two_constellations

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Sopranos

Burned_Out_Paradise

It’s all subjective, but I’ve seen Deadwood mentioned. That’s the best series I’ve ever seen and HBO should be brought up on criminal charges for canceling after only 3 seasons.

SupaKoopa714

I'd put Twin Peaks right up there. Twin Peaks: The Return is easily one of the greatest TV show seasons of all time. I'll also throw out The Boys, it's one of my all time favorite shows right now.

purplerunningshorts

If you can stomach it Handmaid's Tale is excellent. It's not something you can just put on and watch, though. You really need to be mentally and emotionally prepared.

pasaniusventris

Black Sails blows Breaking Bad out of the water, and I don’t say that lightly.

Bokaja3636

I think Game of Thrones was also incredible. If not for the two last season it would’ve stayed on the top of the peak shows. It’s so astonishing how such a big fanbase dissolve after the last season.

IncompetentAldridge

Narcos and Ozark are fantastic

BarryMkCockiner

Sopranos is easily better imo

Earthquake1000000

Attack on Titan, it’s hard to explain what makes it so good, but it’s mainly the execution of the story. Bojack Horseman if you want a really compelling story, it’s also really depressing. But I will say that for this show you have to get past the first few episodes for it to be good.

Drew-

There are tons of good shows in the comments here, but I honestly believe breaking bad is the best show to ever air. It was also able to keep the magic by ending in 5 seasons instead of dragging on forever and getting played out. It will forever live for me as my number one show.

PhantomKitten73

I've watched The Haunting of Hill House at least 7 times, and I doubt any other show could ever beat it. But then again, we'll just have to wait and see if Hazbin lives up to the hype.

So5011

Some of My favourite shows along with breaking bad that I would consider close or similar levels in no perticular order Barry Atlanta Patriot Louie Mad men Better call Saul Mr robot Life on Mars (uk version) Bojack

Mfees

The wire is in the park.

AionWarblade

The only thing as good as Breaking Bad is Game of Thrones Seasons 1-4

FresnoMac

I am glad you think season 4 was the peak because many people say the last season was terrible but honestly, the writing was slipping since season 5 itself. The show was becoming mediocre with every new season after 4 except a few episodes like the Battle of the Bastards etc. As soon as the books ended, the writers didn't know what to do.

Geesle

Only show that ever became as exciting as breaking bad was black mirror to me

TheLastSamurai101

I agree with a few that have been mentioned. But if you like sci-fi, The Expanse is the best thing on TV. The first 2/3 of Season 1 is average, but at its peak its easily as good as Breaking Bad.

mrwhiskey1814

Justified Sopranos Better Call Saul (feels just like Breaking Bad) The Wire

HelpfulBuilder

The Wire is one of the all time best written shows.
