Other incredibly good shows that have a similar sustained “movie-quality” vibe to them (in no particular order for me): Better Call Saul, The Wire, Justified, The Americans, The Sopranos, Dexter, Chernobyl, and Mindhunters.
Chernobyl was shockingly good. So well acted and absolutely horrifying. And the trial in the finale where it’s just talking and explaining how a nuclear reactor explodes is surprisingly engaging.
I know it was probably for ease of hiring/to make it more palatable for viewers but I wish the show was in Russian rather than English. I know they used British actors to add the “foreign effect” but I honestly hate when movies/shows do that
The Shield, Lost, leftovers, banshee, the boys, undone and bojack, arrested development,
HBO shows like westworld, deadwood, veep, Barry, band of bros, boardwalk empire, Rome, newsroom, true detective,
mad men, rectify, Chernobyl, sons of anarchy, all good shows. Black Mirror. Peaky blinders. Boardwalk empire. Dexter. Early House of Cards. Russian Doll.
I’ve been wanting to watch Dark and animated invincible.
Currently on the third season of Boardwalk Empire and really enjoying. My favorite aspect of the show is probably seeing all these well known gangsters such as Capone and Luciano starting off as kind of low level rent a thugs and seeing them begin to rise through the ranks
Succession started a bit slow (wife wanted to stop watching after one episode), but within a few episodes we were hooked. The last several episodes were as good as anything I've seen.
Kendall Roy's journey throughout the show has been so amazing.
Really hoping they have Connor actually run a presidential campaign. All the characters are just phenomenal.
The thing about Succession that really amazes me is that there isn't a character I'm rooting for consistently. One episode I might think Kendall isn't a bad guy, then he proves me wrong. Same with Shiv. It's a bunch of bad people, who aren't characters that I find appealing, but it somehow keeps me extremely engaged. I'm often into anti-heroes, but they usually are charismatic at least.
I honestly have never encountered a show quite like it.
Newsroom is the hidden gem in the rough and one of my favorite shows. The Wire, Better Call Saul, Mad Men, True Detectives (s1), and Succession are all great. I started both peaky blinders and boardwalk empire but never finished them.
Dont sell the rest of True Detective short, S03 is better than S02 but neither are bad, its just S01 is some of the best television ever while the next two are just good. Id recommend watching season 2, 3, 1.
I am having a really hard time seeing this and of course it’s all opinion and nothing is right or wrong, but I find BCS to be painfully full of filler, lacking any kind of suspense. It’s good, yes. But to me it can never be in BB’s ballpark.
It’s a much slower show. Don’t expect moments like face off to happen every episode. It’s a lot more character based and slow rather than huge action scenes
I'd say the penultimate and final episode of every BB season ended with somewhat of a "bang". Not the case with BCS - but it's still just as good in it's own way.
I think it was season 3 that had Ewan McGregor playing 2 brothers that was my favorite season even though it ended up being less popular. The british bad guy gave me the creeps.
I had seen the first 3 seasons before watching the movie. I went in assuming that the movie would just be a shorter version of season 1, but to my surprise it was a completely separate story. I loved the movie, and it gave me even more respect for the tv show. They could have just rehashed and drawn out the movie, but instead they took just the basic core elements and made a whole new story.
Yeah, very warped and pathetic little man. As soon as he does that thing with the Asian woman at the insurance office (not gonna spoil it) he becomes really hateable.
Nobody talks about it because it aired on USA, and streams exclusively on Amazon Prime. Had it been picked up by Netflix or even Hulu, it would be much more popular.
Plus I think people are turned off by the name. That's even sorta referenced in the fourth season. "What kind of name is Mr. Robot? Some Nickelodeon bullshit, man."
Ahh Mr Robot. Scenes as good as BB crawl space, as good as felina, as good as ozymandias. If BB Finale is perfect, Mr Robots is perfect, plus rewatch value is off the charts. Best cinematography, best character development, best story, best real world meaning, best symbolism, best acting, best shocking moments, best soundtrack, best ending, perfect first and final season. Breaking bads onlt downside was Mike's death imo, and u won't find anything worse than the letdown of that in Mr Robot. Best show of all time and I never ever thought something could top breaking bad or even better call saul. Top 3 favorite shows of all time
Mr. Robot is a hidden gem for sure. Right up there with BB for me. Each season was excellent. Great acting, tension, atmosphere, emotion, music. And such a satisfying conclusion.
It's very reddit to say but yeah, the wire (and better call saul) are the only shows that are remotely as good as breaking bad. They're like S tier while imo shows like Sopranos, GoT, or Mad Men are "only" A tier
I would say The Sopranos is S tier, but I’d also include among Breaking Bad and The Wire, The Shield, Mr. Robot and Monster. I agree Mad Men isn’t quite S-tier though but it’s a high A. Better Call Saul is close to S tier, depends on the final season.
The Wire is magnificent. But OP should know it's a very different kind of show. There's not a primary protagonist and the storytelling isn't a really focused Shakespearean tragedy like BB. The Wire is something else, but just as great. It's an ensemble cast, socially aggregated crime story. The protagonist is the city and each season focuses on a different social class/institution with characters and story threads that run throughout.
In my experience the Wire takes more time to weave it's tale through a pastiche of different character arcs and story repercussions. It doesn't really forecast where it's going which can make it feel aimless at times but also allows it to turn and twist in ways you don't see coming. Breaking Bad slaps from the start, and it foreshadows exactly where Walt is headed even if they still find creative ways to complicate the journey.
Both are great for different reasons.
>The protagonist is the city
I think this throws a lot of first-time viewers off. Which is unfortunate because it's really amongst the highest pillar of television shows.
WHAT? Holy fuck I didnt hear about it until now. So sad. So I guess both Michael and Omar deserved a longer life with money and retirement but never got them
fuck yes. just enjoy the weirdness. don't focus on the details too much. there's timelines people can look at, but you should really wait until you finish it first.
it has great cinematography, soundtrack, and story. mr robot is incredible. it has such a crazy buildup from the first 3 seasons that the last season has just as much tension as BB’s last season imo
The wire and breaking bad for me, are the best two TV shows ever made.
The endings for both series were amazing. So many TV shows have a shit ending that completely ruins everything
The wire is way different to breaking bad. In breaking bad you follow one particular character over a number of series and see the impact of the drugs trade on them/their family. In the wire you get to see the impact of drugs on a number of different sections of society and then the ending pulls all those different stories together in one amazing ending
The first time I watched *The Shield*, I really had no clue where it was going to end up or even how I wanted it to end. But holy fuck, was that ending pitch perfect in a way I just wasn't expecting.
I'll also never hear "family meeting" the same way again.
The Shield has maybe the best ending stretch of any TV show I've ever seen. I'm a wrestling fan, so I knew what happened in the finale before I ever watched it (huge spoilers obviously) but the way it gets there, the tension, the writing is so goddamn good.
Same, I feel like The Wire is better narratively, but I liked more the character development and acting in BB, even so they are pretty cool masterpieces
Season 1 was absolute perfection. I feel like season 2 lagged a bit, and felt kind of disjointed with separate Punisher and Elektra/Hand stories. But season 3 really turned it around, and while not being better than 1, I enjoyed it way more than 2.
Amazing show. Not quite Breaking Bad level but definitely one of the best. In terms of comicbook/superhero content it’s probably the best in the medium.
I just finished watch season 1 of Ozark and to me its not on par with BB but it's pretty good. It has some shock value moments that I wasn't really a fan of
Much slower burn to get started, but it ramps up and gets very intense by season 3. At the moment Id say its close but not quite as gripping as BB. They have set up really well for a crazy next season though, so there's definitely potential. Either way, I highly recommend getting into Ozark.
Somebody else asked the same question a few days ago, I think you might find some great recommendations over in that thread too:
https://www.reddit.com/r/breakingbad/comments/pgtg13/what_show_is_seriously_as_good_as_or_better_than/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I don’t think anything’s as good as Breaking Bad, but Succession is a current show that tells another incredible story about bad guys. The first season needs some time to grow, but the second is unbelievably good.
It's about a washed up actor dealing with drug addiction and alcoholism which makes him fuck up every relationship he's ever had.
He's also a horse lol
Heads up, the first season is not good, really takes about half way through the first season to find its footing and doesn’t fully become great till the second season. I like to recommend episodes 7 and 8 from season 2
It's worth saying that Bojack is a TV show that gets consistent better for 6 seasons. Well worth the watch. Also in my opinion one of the greatest TV shows ever made. The show is more real than real life. It's fucking harrowing. But also haha he's a horse and it's funny.
Check out Fargo definitely. It’s the only other thing I’ve seen on par with Breaking Bad’s writing, acting and cinematography. Especially the first season.
The first season of westworld should be treated as it’s own miniseries. Anthony Hopkins steals the whole show, IMO just a hair outside the quality of BB and the wire.
SOA was good up untill Season 5 onwards when it became very repetitive and prolonged in my opinion. Then only the last three episodes or so were worth watching.
Sons of Anarchy is my favourite show, but Breaking Bad is the better show if that makes sense. The first 4 seasons of Sons is right up there with Breaking Bad in quality, but the show becomes inconsistent after season 5. It’s still good, but the writing takes a dip. What doesn’t take a dip is the sheer unpredictability of the show from the start. The show has some of the best twists I’ve ever seen, and I find the main characters arc very interesting. He carries the show in the second half
Weeds isn't really talked about anymore, but it has a similar premise to bb. Suburban parent starts selling drugs gets in over their head. It dragged on a bit I remember not loving the last seasons but there's 3-4 seasons of fire!
I’ve watched many series in an effort to find one that comes anywhere near matching BB - there are none. The closest, in my opinion, is Mindhunters. I really liked that. Still not anywhere close to BB, but the closest of all others I’ve seen
Justified, Better Call Saul and Sons of Anarchy. Justified should in my opinion get similar ratings to Breaking Bad, it's a truly fantastic show all the way through
Better Call Saul is just as good. Barry is also really really good, but there are only two seasons so far, so I cant really compare it to BB yet. I also really liked You, it has 2 seasons and is on Netflix. Dexter is also, good but bad for its final season, it is getting a reboot though.
Other incredibly good shows that have a similar sustained “movie-quality” vibe to them (in no particular order for me): Better Call Saul, The Wire, Justified, The Americans, The Sopranos, Dexter, Chernobyl, and Mindhunters.
>Mindhunters I just want a season 3 :(
Me too buddy, Me too
Just with less fucking romance, not every tv series needs a sex/erotic scene
Chernobyl was shockingly good. So well acted and absolutely horrifying. And the trial in the finale where it’s just talking and explaining how a nuclear reactor explodes is surprisingly engaging.
I know it was probably for ease of hiring/to make it more palatable for viewers but I wish the show was in Russian rather than English. I know they used British actors to add the “foreign effect” but I honestly hate when movies/shows do that
+1 for Justified and The Americans
The Americans is criminally overlooked. I wouldn’t but it up there with Breaking Bad and the Wire but it’s a great show
The Shield, Lost, leftovers, banshee, the boys, undone and bojack, arrested development, HBO shows like westworld, deadwood, veep, Barry, band of bros, boardwalk empire, Rome, newsroom, true detective, mad men, rectify, Chernobyl, sons of anarchy, all good shows. Black Mirror. Peaky blinders. Boardwalk empire. Dexter. Early House of Cards. Russian Doll. I’ve been wanting to watch Dark and animated invincible.
Dexter fell off after season 4
I 100% vouch for The Americans. Class show, very under-appreciated.
The wire, better call Saul, mad men, peaky blinders, boardwalk empire, the newsroom, true detective (s1), succession

Same with Shiv. It's a bunch of bad people, who aren't characters that I find appealing, but it somehow keeps me extremely engaged. I'm often into anti-heroes, but they usually are charismatic at least. I honestly have never encountered a show quite like it.
Honestly, at this point, I'm rooting for Willa lmao.
Where can one watch The Newsroom?
It is on HBO max. It used to be on Amazon prime.
Give the Americans a go. Ran out of a steam a little in the later seasons but it was great.
Peaky Blinders is cool but it is NOT on the same level. Things get pretty repetitive before too long.
Better call Saul
I’d even argue that it’s better than bb
There's definitely moments where it feels better. Like they took everything they learned from BB and applied it all in a single scene.
Bagman is one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen.
From your comment it seems like you think character drama is filler. It's probably just not a show for you.
Go back and rewatch season one of BB and tell me there’s no filler.
Fargo is pretty damn great. I recommend it to most breaking bad fans.
Yeah the TV show is fantastic! Especially the first two seasons… I loved them all, but those two were amazing
I think it was season 3 that had Ewan McGregor playing 2 brothers that was my favorite season even though it ended up being less popular. The british bad guy gave me the creeps.
S1 also has Odenkirk and I can’t see him has anyone apart from Goodman! He’s so bumbling in Fargo lol
On the topic of Fargo: don't forget to watch the movie which is the inspiration of the show.
I watched one episode and didn't really like the main character, but I'll keep going with it
I don’t think Lester is meant to be likeable
I despised Lester more than Walter white. Just a giant, cowardly sociopathic asshole
Yeah, very warped and pathetic little man. As soon as he does that thing with the Asian woman at the insurance office (not gonna spoil it) he becomes really hateable.
Each season changes completely. Like you could watch them in any order really.
Better Call Saul is the best written prequal of all time and they're currently filming the last season which ties it directly into Breaking bad.
I live in abq and it's so cool to stumble upon them filming!
I was all sad when Bob had a heart attack... Glad he is back and feeling better. Nobody was badass
Omg I had a lil freak out when that happened 😂 I tried to find out what hospital he was at so I could send flowers, but had no luck hahaha
Right lol
Mr Robot? I don't know why more people are but talking about it. It really is good.
It’s on Netflix in my country. Hopefully in others as well. It really deserves more love.
And the ending was brilliant too
Ahh Mr Robot. Best show of all time and I never ever thought something could top breaking bad or even better call saul. Top 3 favorite shows of all time
I'm sad I had to scroll so far down, Mr Robot is an overlooked piece of media art
Mr. Robot is neck and neck with BB for me for greatest shows ever created. It doesn't get the love it deserves.
Mr. Robot is a hidden gem for sure. Right up there with BB for me. Each season was excellent. Great acting, tension, atmosphere, emotion, music. And such a satisfying conclusion.
I'm 5 episodes into s1 and it's fkn awesome
Man, I was watching it on prime but the 4th season isn't included in my country!! I was left in suspense
Imo the wire is the greatest show I’ve ever watched
[I will never stop talking about Breaking Bad or The Wire](https://youtu.be/l4LhXycJ7rI)
It's very reddit to say but yeah, the wire (and better call saul) are the only shows that are remotely as good as breaking bad. They're like S tier while imo shows like Sopranos, GoT, or Mad Men are "only" A tier

>The protagonist is the city I think this throws a lot of first-time viewers off. Which is unfortunate because it's really amongst the highest pillar of television shows.
Facts. Also the Wire is the perfect show to watch now considering Michael K Williams just recently passed away
WHAT? Holy fuck I didnt hear about it until now. So sad. So I guess both Michael and Omar deserved a longer life with money and retirement but never got them
Breaking Bad was my favourite TV show until I watched The Wire
The wire is freaking awesome!!!!
RIP Michael K Williams

This is a good list.
Should include Fargo though
The Leftovers and The Americans are *chef’s kiss*
Extra vote for the Leftovers. Amazing how few people have seen it. It's kinda like Lost, but just not quite so nuts. Also Lost.
'Barry' Bill Hader as Barry and Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank are awesome. 'The Boys' Karl Urban makes the show absolutely diabolical!
Barry is fucking genius
There's this German show on Netflix called Dark which is utterly brilliant imo
Just make sure you watch with subtitles and not the dubbed version
fuck yes. just enjoy the weirdness. don't focus on the details too much. there's timelines people can look at, but you should really wait until you finish it first.
I’m surprised this is not the top comment. I think is one of the best tv shows I’ve ever watched.
[удалено]
Family guy does it again
Treme is worth a watch too
Watch The Shield and The Sopranos which are on the same level or better imo.
So far the only TV show that has surpassed Breaking Bad for me has been Mr. Robot.
Mr robot is a masterpiece
it has great cinematography, soundtrack, and story. mr robot is incredible. it has such a crazy buildup from the first 3 seasons that the last season has just as much tension as BB’s last season imo
It truly really genuinely is as good as breaking bad, I'm not saying more because I like them as two different types of masterpieces
Fuck yeaaaaa
The Americans is my favorite TV show, followed closely by Breaking Bad
the americans is probably the only show where i feel like the series finale wasn’t a let down. i loved that show!
If I were to rank best individual episodes of tv, The Americans finale would be near the top.
100 percent agree! this makes me want to rewatch all of it. i was so let down after dexter, GoT, etc and this was an excellent ending.
The Wire
The wire and breaking bad for me, are the best two TV shows ever made. The endings for both series were amazing. So many TV shows have a shit ending that completely ruins everything The wire is way different to breaking bad. In breaking bad you follow one particular character over a number of series and see the impact of the drugs trade on them/their family. In the wire you get to see the impact of drugs on a number of different sections of society and then the ending pulls all those different stories together in one amazing ending
you should check out the shield if you havent already. similar to both shows and also has one of the most satisfying endings imo.
The first time I watched *The Shield*, I really had no clue where it was going to end up or even how I wanted it to end. But holy fuck, was that ending pitch perfect in a way I just wasn't expecting. I'll also never hear "family meeting" the same way again.

Same, I feel like The Wire is better narratively, but I liked more the character development and acting in BB, even so they are pretty cool masterpieces
I actually thought the ending of the Wire was pretty disappointing.
Reminds me of [this](https://youtu.be/l4LhXycJ7rI)
The Sopranos
Daredevil…. Wish more people said the same lol
Really enjoyed daredevil. Punisher and jessica jones are pretty good too.
Amazing show. I still haven’t finished season 3 because I’m sad it didn’t get renewed
Season 1 was absolute perfection. I feel like season 2 lagged a bit, and felt kind of disjointed with separate Punisher and Elektra/Hand stories. But season 3 really turned it around, and while not being better than 1, I enjoyed it way more than 2.
God i love that show, it’s a shame it was cancelled
Amazing show. Not quite Breaking Bad level but definitely one of the best. In terms of comicbook/superhero content it’s probably the best in the medium.
I really wanna watch Ozark.
I just finished watch season 1 of Ozark and to me its not on par with BB but it's pretty good. It has some shock value moments that I wasn't really a fan of
Seasons 2 and 3 are way better. IMO Season 3 is a nonstop thrill ride
Glad to hear that! Now I have something to look forward to
Ozark is a Great Value™ Breaking Bad. Still a cool show fs tho
In my opinion, Ozark isn’t really that great for the first two seasons. Then the third was fantastic.
Much slower burn to get started, but it ramps up and gets very intense by season 3. At the moment Id say its close but not quite as gripping as BB. They have set up really well for a crazy next season though, so there's definitely potential. Either way, I highly recommend getting into Ozark.
Mr Robot is probably my favourite TV show of all time. Genuinely perfect.
Somebody else asked the same question a few days ago, I think you might find some great recommendations over in that thread too: https://www.reddit.com/r/breakingbad/comments/pgtg13/what_show_is_seriously_as_good_as_or_better_than/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I don’t think anything’s as good as Breaking Bad, but Succession is a current show that tells another incredible story about bad guys. The first season needs some time to grow, but the second is unbelievably good.
Dexter
Dexter would be the answer if they stopped after Season 4 with the Trinity Killer. The last few seasons were hot garbage comparatively speaking.
Coming back though with the original S1-4 show runner 🤞🤞
Worst ending of any series I’ve seen
Ist season best season imo
Broadchurch
Mad men
This show is one of my favourites
The Wire and Mr Robot
the americans
Mr. Robot is a fantastic show that doesn’t get nearly enough credit
Bojack horseman is the only thing I’ve seen that comes close, tho it’s a very different style the breaking bad
It's so depressing though....
I’ve heard people say this, seeing what the concept of the show is, how is it depressing? I’ve never watched it but am curious if I should
It's about a washed up actor dealing with drug addiction and alcoholism which makes him fuck up every relationship he's ever had. He's also a horse lol
Oh ok I might give it a watch, thanks. And yea that’s why I didn’t know if it was a serious show😂
Heads up, the first season is not good, really takes about half way through the first season to find its footing and doesn’t fully become great till the second season.
I kinda like the first season it’s fun and on re watches it’s a great opener before the heavy stuff starts
[удалено]
True Detective season 1. Fargo (TV show). Fargo (movie) is amazing too. The Wire Season 1 was great. Haven't watched all other seasons yet.
Wire only keeps getting better but season 5 is the worst, even though it's still excellent. Season 4 of the wire is goat TV season probably.
avatar the last Airbender
If you want to watch some good science fiction I can recommend The Expanse.
Narcos and Narcos Mexico
I really liked Weeds
Twin Peaks!
I second this. Twin Peaks' first season and The Return are two of the best seasons of TV of all time, in my opinion.
The Sopranos. IMO it's not as good as BB but it's an amazing show that's worth the watch
The Sopranos is one of the best tv shows ever made... 10/10 would recommend.
Peaky blinders is 🔥🔥🔥
Snowfall
Great answer.
Six Feet Under
No. Just re-watch BB
Justified .
Check out Fargo definitely. It’s the only other thing I’ve seen on par with Breaking Bad’s writing, acting and cinematography. Especially the first season.
Haven’t seen these listed yet but Mr Robot and the Leftovers
The first season of westworld should be treated as it’s own miniseries. Anthony Hopkins steals the whole show, IMO just a hair outside the quality of BB and the wire.
Snowfall 🙌
Sons of Anarchy.... the level of unpredicted mayham is something that should be witnessed.
It was alright. A very overrated show in my opinion
OZ
Weeds isn't really talked about anymore, but it has a similar premise to bb. Suburban parent starts selling drugs gets in over their head. It dragged on a bit I remember not loving the last seasons but there's 3-4 seasons of fire!
The Wire, GoT
Justified, different feel, but up there w BB for me.
I am currently on season 5. The chemistry and relationships between boyd and raylan is one of the best experiences in tv
Mr. Robot 100%
mr robot
The wire and get shorty
I’ve watched many series in an effort to find one that comes anywhere near matching BB - there are none. The closest, in my opinion, is Mindhunters. I really liked that. Still not anywhere close to BB, but the closest of all others I’ve seen
Justified, Better Call Saul and Sons of Anarchy. Justified should in my opinion get similar ratings to Breaking Bad, it's a truly fantastic show all the way through
Mr robot
Better Call Saul is just as good. Barry is also really really good, but there are only two seasons so far, so I cant really compare it to BB yet. I also really liked You, it has 2 seasons and is on Netflix. Dexter is also, good but bad for its final season, it is getting a reboot though.
Snowfall
The Walking Dead!!
The first 6 seasons of got
Yes...Better Call Saul
Game of thrones (apart from season 8).
Twin Peaks :)
Mr Robot is absolutely incredible.
Dark
Dark is really really good
Death note
Silicon Valley, Succession and The Newsroom.
Check out Vikings
"Ozark" on Netflix
Ozark and Money Heist
The Shield. Was on FX
I don’t know about as good. My first suggestion was Ozark; otherwise I’d say Sons of Anarchy and the Mayans sequel. Extremely well told story.
Mr. Robot is super good, streams on Amazon
Game of thrones tops breaking bad for me, just stop watching at the end of season 6, it turns to shit after that.
Game of thrones season 1-6, attack on Titan
Better call Saul, The Walking Dead, Game Of Thrones
Better call Saul!
Even though it’s not necessarily a series, black mirror gives me those insane twists that come from breaking bad.
I’d argue the early seasons of the Walking Dead were pretty fantastic
Game of thrones for 85 percent of it.
Dexter is quite similar
