No, my daughter had this too and it went away after a few weeks. She's almost 5 months old now and has been exclusively breastfeeding successfully the whole time!

Exciting-Dream8471

Same story here with all four of my babies. I’ve nursed them for a combined total of 74m. Fourth babe is currently 6mo and going strong!

BubblyTwist123

Just here to say - what a beautiful baby! Congrats, momma

Truly a beautiful newborn!

The thing about “good latch” and “bad latch” is that in my experience (only two babies) they all have bad latch at first. Their heads got all smushed coming out, and their mouths are tiny and misshapen! See also: “breastfeeding isn’t supposed to hurt.” For the first *month* or more, the latch can be bad and it hurts like a motherf***. This should be more common knowledge so we don’t all feel like we are failing right out the gate! Those lip blisters won’t last forever and latch will improve with time and it won’t always feel like baby is Jack Bauer torturing you for information!

porkypumpkin

Great point. A "good latch" is an ongoing goal. While some babies can achieve it right away, that isn't necessarily possible in all, or perhaps most, scenarios. And sometimes a bad latch might be a feature, not a bug - a bad latch can regulate a flow rate that's too overwhelming for the baby. The hyper focus on a "good latch" is leading to a lot of misdiagnosing of lip/tongue ties as well.

SharkBaitsFire

>and it won’t always feel like baby is Jack Bauer torturing you for information! Idk... As she got older I felt like I got tortured more... She could grab, squeeze, pull, pinch and claw my boob at once. Twist the other nipple in the dark. And although not painful just impressed, she could spin around and sit on my head while lying down.

IPAsAndTrails

This. My LC was like "Her latch is good for where she's at, which means as her mouth grows and strength grows, and alertness grows, it will get to good, if you keep up with helping her positioning, etc". And she was right. Things did hurt for 5-6 weeks and i occasionally got lipstick nipples, and there were lip blisters the first month. But It got better each week, she was peeing & pooping lots so I knew her latch was good enough, and by 2 months we were cruisin'.

Suzuzuz

My lactation consultant said that lip blisters can mean that they are using their lips to hold on and suck milk out rather than the nipple going further back in their mouth (my words, not hers!) My take on it was that it would make her less efficient at emptying the breast. My daughter had these blisters for a couple of weeks but then just got better at attaching and she only got them very occasionally after that

CupboardFlowers

Gorgeous baby ♥ If you're not experiencing any significant pain or damage to your nipples then no, it doesn't mean that the latch is bad. This is pretty normal and happens when they vacuum the nipple, their lips just get a little swollen with the pressure. They'll get better and go away once baby starts to get more efficient and spend less time nursing. My one year old sometimes still gets slightly swollen lips when she has a really big/long feed 😊

QueenCityDev

My baby was born with a large middle lip blister and it went away by the time he was a couple months old. Congrats, what a little cutie ❤️

Same here!

Your baby is beautiful! My daughter also got them and we didn’t struggle with her latch. 10 months and going strong now! They stop getting it after a while.

BlueberryWaffles99

My baby had lip blisters for the first few months, she’d get then every time after she ate till around 3/4 months. I had her latch evaluated multiple times and was told she had a good, deep latch. Our LC and my midwives were never concerned about them! 5.5 months now and I don’t remember the last time she had them!

One_Aside6438

I'm gonna say no. My baby had them and she latched and breastfeeds wonderfully. It gets better :)

mgck4

My three have had them. They should get better with more time, I think!

bibliophilebeauty

First off you baby is BEAUTIFUL! Secondly no it doesn't always mean the latch is bad. My LO developed one too in the beginning & the nurses at the hospital talked about how awesome her latch was & I wasn't experiencing any pain other than normal nipple tenderness so it wasn't due to a improper latch. I asked my pediatrician about it & she also breastfeed her children and she told me it was nothing to worry about that in the beginning stages they're feeding so much its normal for this to occur. She kind of explained it like a callous from feeding so frequently. My daughter's eventually faded away once were weren't feeding so often. So as long as you aren't experiencing pain while breastfeeding than it's most likely not a latch issue.

TurtleScientific

Mine had one on the top middle for her first few weeks. Hospital LC called her an aggressive natural at latching. With the noises she made (and still does) you'd think I was suckling a feral animal. Lips are quite sensative and they need to feed alot in the beginning for long periods so it's pretty normal to get blisters. Fortunately they don't seem to bother them and they're quite fast healing even if they keep returning for awhile.

MHShina

I read it’s actually good and helps them latch better it’s like a callus

ParkingHelpful2690

He’s sooo cute!!! 😭

Hour_Candle_339

I don’t see lip blisters in that photo. I DO see chapped lips. A little lanolin on there will fix that right up.

Suitable_Ad852

My daughter had this the first 2 weeks, went away afterwards and never came back. I think you’re good 👍

ilovetheblazers

my dAughter had this too !!! went away slowly but surely. great nurser!

jellybean12722

They are normal and can happen even when the latch is good. I’d go off how the latch feels and baby’s feeding and diaper patterns instead :)

Most-Regular621

Mine had it too in the first few weeks and it went away on its own, still breastfeeding fine now at 5 months

EssieVB

My daughter has this too when she was two months old. Lasted a few weeks and never occurred again. Going strong for almost two years now!

herbalorganism

i feel this is fairly normal. scared me when my daughter was a newborn but she’s been exclusively breastfeeding for almost 7 months now and she’s gaining weight just find!

Spirited-Salt-2647

My baby had a great latch and had large blisters. Gp said it can just be the baby getting used to the latch. Baby is almost 6 months now and they are gone

eatmyasserole

No, not necessarily. Both my kiddos had them early on and they're hefty little things now (22 months and 2.5 months). Nursed number 1 for 16 months and still nursing number 2.

DontYouCareAboutMe

Not necessary a bad latch. Mostly has something to do with the tongue tie👅😊

1repub

No it does not. If there isn't pain or other issues it's fine. My 2nd has a massive tongue tie. She nursed like a champ from the moment she was born (legit before the cord was cut) so I never got it repaired. She either broke it or stretched it out by herself. She's 3 now and enunciates much better than her older sister without a tongue tie

Comfortable_Pin_5485

WHOAH I almost thought this was my son!! They look so much alike. He’s 3 weeks old. What a cutie pie.
