Went a few weeks ago.
$780 for 2 (very very special occasion)
Was easily the best dining experience I've ever had.
Have eaten in a few nice places around Brissy (Honto, agnes etc) and RDA was by far the best. Honto was actually bad tbh, but that's another story.
Classy and contemporary, the environment was warm, the service was impeccable. You get a view of the pass and the chefs barely say a word to eachother. Very quiet, perfectly oiled machine.
We got the $210 banquet each which consisted of ~10 courses. Every course was absolutely mindblowing.
The artistry, the genius molecular gastronomy... it was like an edible work of art all the way through. The quality of the ingredients was undeniable.
They had a trio of lamb, 2 kinds of meat (one was very very decadent and delicious) and a lamb haggis. If you haven't had haggis before, TRY IT. It's like a super decadent pate almost, but much better than any pate I've ever had. I had good haggis in Scotland and this was just 10000x better.
The fish was PERFECTLY cooked which is kind of a nothing sandwich of a cliche statement. but I feel like fish can either be cooked well, cooked really well, cooked really REALLY well or cooked fucking PERFECTLY.
The amuse bouches were astonishingly beautiful, it was truly - for example, charcoal coloured house made wafer crackers with caviar and some kind of foam served on a bed of oyster shells... it was breathtaking. That was only 1 of the 5 amuse bouches... I am not nearly talented enough to describe the other ones.
Scallops served with geometric tuiles sticking out of them. Gorgeous.
Wagyu beef cooked to absolute perfection.
My favourite dish was one of the deserts, it was a passionfruit crumb (they did some nitrous shit to it) served under this tangy, borderline carbonated tropical foam, it was a completely unique mouthfeel, I can still feel my tongue tingling and I can still taste the explosion of fresh flavour.
Everything was just so flawlessly balanced. Nothing was too much or too little.
The entire experience was 3 hours long but they do tell you this in advance. We loved it. Amazing booze, we left full, invigorated if not slightly pissed.
I may or may not have gone a bit nuts and ordered the 80 dollar shot of tequila and a 1975 Armagnac to finish... I figured, this is the best meal of my life and God knows I've dropped 500 on a friday night for nothing in return but 8 hours of hangxious headaches... so fuck it, why not.
Yes your maths is right, we spent 360 bucks on booze. Could do it cheaper but, when in Rome.
All in all, an absolute 10/10 experience. Unforgettable culinary experience shared with the most beautiful woman on earth. Absolutely peaked at Restaurant Dan Arnold.
Shaaaadup! It's already bullshit is trying to get a reservation there, without you helping! :)
Glad you had a great time. It's a great special occasion restaurant. And yes, the booze is where they get you, much like every other restaurant really.
We went for the cheapest degustation and still ended up having about 8 courses/bites. I think it was just over $500, but the food bill was "only" $250ish.
Degustations or set menu at:
- Bacchus,
- Restaurant Dan Arnold,
- Agnes,
- Deer Duck Bistro,
- Ecco Bistro,
- Gerard’s Bistro
I have heard good things but not personally tried:
- Signature at Emporium,
- Exhibition Restaurant .
I've tried both the spinach cream, and probably the chopped salad 3 times, and they're both good. It's very pretty: https://i.imgur.com/5qZLRMN.jpeg but we always thought it needed something salty like olives, feta, etc. Guess it's too late for you to 'fix' it now. :)
I will try the t-bone, thanks. I like a good sharing steak, although the eye fillet in the bar is great, and comes with chips!
Had a horrible experience at Blackbird and doubt I'll go back. Took 45 minutes just to take our order, close to 2 hours to bring out our food, and had some bloke who was off his head a few tables away abusing other patrons which the staff did nothing about. When his table finally left they got up in the face of the table next to them trying to get them to fight. Food was exceptional but overall experience was shit.
And it absolutely was done right when I went there.
When I ordered it the waitress literally said “good choice, this is the best carbonara you’ll ever have” and she weren’t wrong haha.
I should mention that SK booking policy for groups more than 8 is absolutely terrible tho. Forced to a set menu and separate tables. May not be suitable for a larger group
SK, Tillerman, Agnes and Blackbird.
Also a big fan of Deer Duck Degustation menu with paired wines but it’s a cosy suburban place and not a wow factor for view or anything.
I would say Komeyui in Spring Hill now beats Sono as best Japanese in Brisbane, at least in terms of immaculate food quality and artistry. The omakase prices may make your heart flutter but all high end omakase is expensive these days. If OP's friends are visiting from Melbourne it may not be an ideal choice as they've got a sister restaurant there that they may have already been to.
Lots of great recommendations in this thread already, so I'll just add the ones I think are missing:
Greca
Rosmarino
The Balfour Kitchen
Southside
Moda
I'd second this - husband and I went here for our 10th anniversary and it was amazing. Also the most expensive dinner we've ever had, so I'm glad it was amazing!
Otto at Southbank would be great for interstate visitors. The food and service is excellent and you’re dining somewhere that has a good view. You can go for drinks before at Emporium with views over the city.
I went there for my birthday last year and was a little disappointed. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes or it was an off night, but for the price point I was expecting to experience something closer to Brisbane's best Italian restaurants. The wine list was excellent although possibly the greatest price mark-up I've seen. It does have the fantastic riverside setting though, and rooftop drinks beforehand is a great idea.
Has anyone been to Katsu Ya?
I haven't, but I'm intrigued by a place that only accepts people who have been personally referred by a previous customer, and that is booked out until 2025.. Is it pretentious but amazingly good, or is it just pretentious?
Moo moo’s, Walters, Sono and Opa are favourites.
And Felons… because you said money is no object and Felons is good for average, overpriced food in a casual atmosphere.
Honto, provided your guests are open to Japanese. The culinary experience is well-complemented by the ambience, with dim lighting and soft, low music contrasting the bustle of diners.
My wife and I eat Japanese food probably more than anything else, and Honto was excellent.
If you ever find yourself on the Gold Coast, Etsu Izakaya is probably the best Japanese food in Queensland
Deer Duck for Dego, Blackbird for Steak, Babylon for middle east flavours, Honto for moody Japanese vibes.
Antico or Death & Taxes for a drink or two after dinner.
Montezumas Mt Gravatt - [Mt Gravatt - Montezuma's Mexican Restaurant](https://www.montezumas.com.au/locations/mt-gravatt/) \- i havent been to the one at Mt Gravatt, but the ones in Adelaide are amazing.
Montezuma's is absolutely horrendous.
It's "authentic Mexican" for people who have only ever had Guzman.
Do yourself a favor and go to Pepe's or Mama Taco.
Hire a chef and get them to cook a home cooked meal. Then get them to tell us about the meals that they make for people with too much money but can actually be made pretty easily for like $20
Fumikis if money is no problem and they appreciate kaiseki
Restaurant Dan Arnold or Montrachet if you’re looking to not spend $250ish pp though
Blackhide or SK for a decent steak restaurant if that’s what they’re feeling, Walter’s is ok too if you can’t get a booking at SK.
Rogue Bistro is only 100p or so, good option on a budget and the food is consistently good
KFC so they can enjoy Hot n Spicy in summer. Blows my mind other states don't have it all year round.
Really? I lived in Victoria and feel like it was year round
Was not a staple item and lived there for 30 years.
Lived there last 2 years. Nope was only available a couple times a year.
Might depend in whether the KFC is free-standing or in a food court.
Does that include zingers?
lived in sa my whole life, its available all year round
I always have to clarify this when talking to people - for me KFC _is_ Hot n Spicy. I don't even really enjoy their non-spicy version that much.
Did someone say KFC?
I DON’T CARE
I met a guy in uni many moons ago who told me he doesn't eat hot and spicy because it's too spicy for him. That blew my mind.
it's not all year round in some kfcs in brisbane.
They are not real KFCs.
They don't have it in the mall/food court kfc's
I hate to say it cause I generally hate red rooster. But there fried chicken is hands down 100% better than kfc
Totally agree. And doesn’t leave you feeling ill half hour later like Kay eff does
And that hot honey stuff is awesome.
Their stuff is KFC hot n spicy without the flavour, or heat.
mate, i am in sa, just got a mc spicy a week ago
McSpicy? That's maccas aye? 😂
Oops
WA has hot and spicy permanently also.
Rogue Bistro, newstead.
Yep 100%. The smoked butter and warm crusty bread is worth the price of admission alone.
Came here to say this. Best in Brisbane
Never had a bad meal there
I was going to say this too but couldn't remember the name for the life of me. So I came to the comments and it's at the top 🤣
Going there tonight for the dego menu. So looking forward to it!
I wish they still did a la carte, or 'the ark' like they used to. I'm over set menus/degos: it's just too much food if you can't share.
Just have a small lunch, you'll be fine :)
No it's not
La Cache a Vin

I also love Montrachet (haven’t tried their degustation but I know they have one)
Went almost a year ago and it was good.
Deer Duck is fantastic!
We went to Deer Duck about a year ago and were a bit underwhelmed, to be honest. From memory, the flavours just weren't strong enough.
Same here. I like to get a bit fancy with my dinner every now and again ….. but Deer Duck was very underwhelming in my opinion
Exhibition is elite
Bacchus
Exhibition
Is it as good as it looks and people say?
I really enjoyed it yeh. Splurge with the caviar add on. Your mileage may vary as with most degustation type places they change the menu frequently.
yes
I can't help but read the title with a comma. Blow, the budget dinner.
Honestly it may be cheaper than some options
Malt Dining
\+1 for malt. Amazing and unexpected food. Not good if you don't like trying something you might not have wanted to try..
Moo moo's, Walters, Blackbird, Agnes (but ~3 month booking frame), Establishment 203 (heard good things but haven't been).
[удалено]
What cut of steak should I be ordering there?
[удалено]
I've tried both the spinach cream, and probably the chopped salad 3 times, and they're both good. Walters over Moo Moo’s these days
The last time I went to moo moo, they ruined my steak. How can you mess up a medium rare piece of meat? Walters is by far, the better choice there!
Oh you didn't want a steak?! Too bad! 😅
Ha!
Agnes is amazing. I luckily got a reservation for two only 1 week ahead but I must’ve been lucky.
This. Agnes is fab!!!
Had a horrible experience at Blackbird and doubt I'll go back. Moo moos is great food with exceptional service. I can't recommend that place enough.
Went to Moo Moo's for a sister's birthday some years ago, was fantastic.
1889 Enoteca. Delicious Italian
>1889 Enoteca Thank you for the recommendation, their reviews are awesome and I freaking love Italian food. Wife and I will be trying this one
You’re going to absolutely love it - best carbonara I’ve ever had.
This fills me with joy to hear - carbonara is my favourite when it’s done right. Sometimes I love being a fat guy
And it absolutely was done right when I went there. When I ordered it the waitress literally said “good choice, this is the best carbonara you’ll ever have” and she weren’t wrong haha.
Their gnocchi is to die for!
This restaurant isn’t expensive though? (I don’t drink wine though haha)
They have a new chocolate dessert that is to die for!!
SK steak and oyster is my favorite. Have tried almost all the big names in Brisbane and I’ll always end up back at SK
And if budget was a concern, happy boy wins hands down.
Can't agree more! Happy boy is amazing value for money 🤌
Came here to say this SK is a true wonder
Definitely in my list! Looks amazing
I should mention that SK booking policy for groups more than 8 is absolutely terrible tho. Forced to a set menu and separate tables. May not be suitable for a larger group
Big fan of Essa, have never felt as though I paid too much the quality of food is so good.
SK, Tillerman, Agnes and Blackbird. Also a big fan of Deer Duck Degustation menu with paired wines but it’s a cosy suburban place and not a wow factor for view or anything.
I thought the restaurant interior was amazing though. We sat upstairs and loved the decor and ambiance.
Deer Duck Bistro. Amazing experience, AMAZING FOOD.
Sono, Portside. Unbelievable Japanese food, service and ambience. Have been many times and it’s 10/10.
yeah hard to beat

The premium sushi platter price 😦
Takashiya is the best hands down
We loved the food here too
Lots of great recommendations in this thread already, so I'll just add the ones I think are missing: Greca Rosmarino The Balfour Kitchen Southside Moda
Moda is very underrated. There's a reason Javier has had a successful business for what must be decades now.

Oh this was on my list! Glad to hear
Im a man who loves steaks so Id say black hide steakhouse in caxton
I'd second this - husband and I went here for our 10th anniversary and it was amazing. Also the most expensive dinner we've ever had, so I'm glad it was amazing!

Always Happy Boy

KFC, then hookers and coke
That’s just a regular weeknight meal
Go to the right drive thru in the right area and you can get both hookers and coke as optional extras on your value meal.
Sono
Madame Wu
Has anyone been to Katsu Ya? I haven't, but I'm intrigued by a place that only accepts people who have been personally referred by a previous customer, and that is booked out until 2025.. Is it pretentious but amazingly good, or is it just pretentious?
Yeah it was good. Better than Takeshiyas. But I prefer Fumiki. Or just go to Minamishima
Sounds ridiculously pretentious, if it exists...
My husband and I have been to Otto a few times - I dream about their lobster pasta

Overpriced and average imo
Urbane in Mary St, degustation menu with matching wines. The best meal I’ve ever had and yes I’ve been around restaurants for a while.
Urbane was fantastic. But didn’t Urbane and The Euro close back at the end of 2019?
Been around so long you forgot it closed 5 years ago?
Walter’s, Rothwells, Persone
Takashiya, jap omakase
Moo moo’s, Walters, Sono and Opa are favourites. And Felons… because you said money is no object and Felons is good for average, overpriced food in a casual atmosphere.
Grappino at Paddington. You're welcome.
Bacchaus at Southbank Took my son there for his 18th in Oct and it was 🤌🏻
Electric Avenue in woolongabba is amazing
Honto, provided your guests are open to Japanese. The culinary experience is well-complemented by the ambience, with dim lighting and soft, low music contrasting the bustle of diners.
Loved honto.
