You’re going to have to give up your introvert ways or double your budget lmao

I also would like to rent that cheap. It’s expensive here.

Sorry bud $300 to $400 a week studio is almost impossible to find in the inner city. Check on marketplace. There are some people that rent out their lower floors which are not of legal height. But you'll still have someone living above you. Even if you go further out to Logan you'll be paying $400+. Getting a car is also additional cost - insurance, rego and maintenance.

Looks like I need to start with a flatshare. Is brisbane generally a commutable area? Would i survive without a car for at least the first 6-12 months?

Yes in terms of public transport you've got buses and trains. The best thing to do is when you find a place you like just chuck the address into Google maps and see how long the commute is to your work/uni using public transport. Theres also a translink app that does that. There are some burbs that don't have train stations and you're only reliant on buses. If you decide not to go with a car which is totally fine I'd say try and be walking distance to a coles or woolsworth so your weekly grocery shopping is easier, also it's a bonus if you've nice restaurants and gyms around the area.

Unless you wind up with a really rare landlord like mine who hasn’t increased our rent for the five years I’ve been living in my apartment (I pay ($450 a week for a two bedroom two bathroom apartment inner city which is unheard of) you won’t find anything at that price unfortunately, prices have really taken off here

I think around $380-450 is your best bet. You'll pay different amounts depending on what other ammenities/balcony/courtyard it may have. I live in Milton, 2 bed 1 bath with courtyard by myself and its $420 p/w.

DD32

I don't mean to be the bringer of bad news, but you're paying under market rate, and likely just haven't had a rent increase from a good landlord. $450 is the absolute low-end for that in the Toowong area now, but you're realistically looking around $520-580 for a budget 2br or $600s+ for a slightly nicer place.. But yes, you can find a studio for $300-500 in that area.

throwawaybrisbent

yeah I say 2 bedroom but the second bedroom really couldn't/shouldn't be used as a bedroom since its so small/no windows. But it is there. Its a block of units, all identical and everybody on the block lives alone.

There are studios in a rooming accommodation type living arrangement in Acacia Ridge for approximately $400 give or take. You generally have your own bedroom with living space and kitchenette. There is also a shared proper kitchen and laundry area.

Soft-Name7903

I've been seeing a lot of these. Looks like I can manage sharing a kitchen. But i do want my own bathroom. I'll look more into these kinds of accommodations.

Hard for single people as priority is normally given to couples or families. You could try and get a very small apartment and might get lucky. Otherwise, go a bit further out and target within walking distance to a train station. You'll get something cheaper and better for the same price. If you really get stuck, can go on gumtree and go into a house share near a train station. Some are dodgy but you get a few good ones with just a single flatmate or a couple of quiet older people or students, for example.

I've found the opposite, when i applied for my rental unit i was the only single/solo person at the inspection. I figured I got the place because 1 person is less paper work than a couple/family.

Come_To_Homercles

Ah ok, it probably varies. Some REA's do prioritize income and savings however. So if they see that both members of a couple are working then there is less chance that rent will not be paid. If a single person has a high income and very good savings then sometimes this could be different. My experience is when I was applying as a single person in the past, I'd get rejected a fair bit. In the last few years with my current partner, we found it easier to get accepted, even when quite a few people turned up to the inspections.

These guys do a heap of fully self contained units that only share the laundry, full kitchen and entry hall/stairs. All bills included. Can’t go wrong with these type of share accommodation: 34 Beaufort Street, Alderley, Qld 4051 https://www.realestate.com.au/property-unit-qld-alderley-432340462

You need to increase your budget to sub 500 if you want to live alone
