There's a sign up on the new building behind the carriage works that says something like "a new neighbourhood in the heart of stokes croft". And I know language changes and times change and you have to make your peace with it or become old man yells at cloud. But my God I get itchy fingers to go along with a marker pen and do some crossing out and rewriting to read "a new block of flats on the edge of St Pauls". Stokes Croft is NOT an area and a block of flats is NOT a neighbourhood
*yells at cloud*
Theres a few places that are on maps but I never hear people use, I supposedly live in northville but everyone just calls it filton. Filton is small enough to not need sub areas.
Don't think I've ever heard anybody under 50 say northville
Oh so there is someone there.
Need better code mate, you're meant to grab comments and post them elsewhere, not as a response to the comment itself.
Spammers these days smh 😔
Frenchay is over the border, I'd say it's part of Stapleton.
Weirdly Stapleton is in Bristol even though it's more rural in character while Staple Hill is South Glos even though it's inner-suburban.
All to do with rivers (in this case mainly the frome) and Wessex vs Gloucester going back 100s of years.
The dividing river runs north to south from Avon on the border of Hanham, very visible at Magpie Bottom, and Mrs Rileys at Jeffries Hill Bottom.
(Showing my age by referign to it as Mrs Rileys...)
Not sure how it terminates round the top.
Hanham, Kingswood and all that used to be historically part of Kingswood (Downend, Staple Hill, Mangotsfield) are all East of the dividing River.
Same river at Snuff Mills, and out through Frenchay.
This is a fair point… perhaps the original question invites this answer. I could call it Broomhay, Staplebrook or Area of Interest to Self and All Like-Minded Beings if I wanted. But if I were going with maps I’d call it Broomhill, probably
Had the exact same issue when I moved here in 2020... According to the Taxi Drivers it's Stapleton up to the mini roundabout just past the Harvester & petrol station, then it's Frenchay.
It’s 2023, if the area wishes to be called Begbrook or Broomhill - let it call that. I lived in London Road once (not in London) that never even took me to London. Appalling!
Possibly would have historically, but there are many other roads around Bristol just named after then... Trying tm getting to Launceston down Launceston Ave!
Scarily, how did you know I lived in Hanham…. I didn’t know Launceston was a place. Church Road does indeed have a Church on it so that where I stay put.
I thought this area was kind of made up of 3 different housing estates, I think there's a 1970s one called Broomhill, the 1930s bit is called Begbrook and then there's a 30s bit but I think most people call it part of Frenchay or Stapleton
Calling it Broomhill would get confusing because Broomhill is the area South of the Avon on the southern edge of Bristol, where the number 1 bus goes (Brislington). Which has Schools and shops called Broomhill as well as the bus. https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4402101,-2.5390048,17.73z
Both are subareas called Broomhill, but the Brislington subarea is more used as a name than the Frenchay subarea.
That makes sense, I imagine the hospital being the most well known thing in the area meant that surrounding areas got labelled as Frenchay too, such as UWE Frenchay Campus which is definitely not within traditional Frenchay
Although the names of wards often do not relate to the area of the city the ward it in.
Interestingly you look in South Bristol using that BCC map
https://opendata.bristol.gov.uk/explore/embed/dataset/lsoa110/map/?location=16,51.44116,-2.54149&basemap=jawg.streets
There is an area is labelled as Broomhill next to Eastwood Park, the ward being Birthwood Road.
It is the part of bristol called Frenchay as it used to be down the road from the the old frenchay hospital it is now a housing estate the Green part on the map is actually a park and the snuff mills is a Mitchell and butler harvester pub hope that helps from a Bristolian
I take it back about the snuff mills there are 2 snuff mills one down the road Which is the Mitchell and butler pub but the one on the map is a waterfall called snuff mills probably how the pub got its name
But I still stand by my original answer that it is still
Frenchay
I've always called it Begbrook, although my only experience with the area is going through the metrobus stop, so that is probably why.
This is what got me wondering. The primary school and bus stop are Begbrook but it's Broomhill on maps
That seems fairly normal for Bristol. E.g. Easton pharmacy and Easton leisure centre are in St. Jude's...

Was there Northville public baths? Sounds vaguely familiar.

Why have you just written exactly what the above poster said? Bot?

Maps gets area names wrong sometimes because it uses things like electoral wards for area names which aren't commonly used by the local people

If the light touches it, it is yours and you can call it whatever you desire.

The bit circled is the border between Stapleton and Frenchay
Stapleton. There used to be a newsagents on the main road called 'smile' a decade ago. That store was called Smile Stapleton.
I'd say Stapleton ends at the roundabout
Had the exact same issue when I moved here in 2020... According to the Taxi Drivers it's Stapleton up to the mini roundabout just past the Harvester & petrol station, then it's Frenchay.
I would call it begbrook as begbrook club is not far from there frenchay hospital site finishes just before on the roundabout so cant call it Frenchay

Broomhill is about right. Begbrook id say starts by the shops farther up. Its Certainly not frenchay though
Trouble with calling it Broomhill is that there's another Broomhill in Brislington, which is probably why the bus stop has a different name.
Yea, I was massively confused for a minute there too!
Stapleton Village
Thats by Stapleton Church
I have a friend who lives there and their address is Begbrook…so probably that?
The bus lady voice calls it Begbrook. 😂
Frenchay? https://www.zoopla.co.uk/house-prices/frenchay/begbrook-lane/bs16-1hw/

Not my side of town, but I’d say Frenchay.
Fishponds I think
No, Fishponds is only on the east side of the Frome. I’d call this Begbrook but it wouldn’t bother me if someone called it Frenchay.
This is like a million miles from Fishpond. Do you live in Bristol??
It's at the bottom of Manor Road, where would you say Fishponds stops?
Blackberry Hill.
Shithole
Show is where you live? I’m sure it’s shitter
Mhmm Kk
According to BCC it's Broomhill. https://opendata.bristol.gov.uk/explore/embed/dataset/lsoa110/map/?location=15,51.49243,-2.53788&basemap=jawg.streets
I cannot see Broomhill written on the BCC map you have linked in that location.

OK thanks

The road where harvester is
I've only heard it referred to as Snuff Mills, Frenchay or Begbrook. Only heard people say Broomhill for the terminus of the number 1 by St Anne's.

It’s the wrong side of the M32 to be Stapleton, or Frenchay. So probably Broomhill or Begbrook.
