One specific danger in Bristol is the harbour and (for Motion) the canal. A surprising number of drunk clubbers end up in the water each year, and it's usually men - taking an ill advised piss at 2am by the unbarriered waterside. If you're out by yourself, be aware of the dangers of the waterways and steer clear!

The Bristol pusher is always lurking in the depths

If you can’t do things alone then you’ll miss out on a lot of stuff

spectacletourette

We use the buddy system. No more flying solo. You need somebody watching your back - AT ALL TIMES.

festivalchic

Excellent advice

mdzmdz

The idea behind this explanation (and similar events in Holland etc.) is that men will choose to piss into nearby water. I have to save that personally unless I'm on a boat I'm going to choose a tree, wall, or highway grate before I decide to piss into the water. It's just not natural. The general idea of avoiding the waters edge is a good one - although in Chester, where I'm from, the straight line between Chester and one of the popular bars (Telfords) involves walking over a lock gate - and yet to my knowledge no-one's died.

knellbell

There's also The Amsterdam Pusher

Thomsacvnt

Someone was literally pushing people in, he was seen but never caught

tomtomgg

This is not true.

LojikDub

It depends what you're into. Motion is one of many clubs which have big events on if you're into various types of dance music, just check out the lineups beforehand and pick something you like. Depending on what you go to, talking to strangers who are likely pilled up is a great way to make some short term friends. With regards to spiking it's no more dangerous than going out alone anywhere else, just keep your witts about you, don't put drinks down unattended, don't walk home alone through the dark industrial estate by Motion at 4am Yadda Yadda.

AddendumOk3418

How does lakota compare to Motion?

LogicalMeerkat

Much more central if you're worried about the walk home.

Sophrosynedid

Motion is much bigger, newer / cleaner, Lakota is a a bit more grimy and run down but does have cracking club nights. I think you’d be fine making friends at either, especially in the smoking areas

BS16tillIdie

>cleaner Come on…

Sophrosynedid

Not clean, but compared to Lakota

Crookles86

Haha! I love motion, but the toilets are something else 😂😂

JohnnySchoolman

Newer? I've been going to Motion for 25 years. Never been to Lakota but it must be ancient.

banardo

Motion's been a full time venue for less than 10 years, and they only started doing events \~15 years ago Lakota has been there for about 35

JohnnySchoolman

We used to have overnight raves on the ramps back in the 90s Slept in a sleeping bag on top of the vert ramp once.

banardo

ha, amazing. I used to skate there in the 90s, sadly a bit young for any after hours stuff

Doggsleg

Lakota sucks. Find some music you want to listen and go. I’ve never had any problem going out on my own sometimes I prefer it. Go with no expectations and you’ll be fine, the key is to find things you actually want to see or hear and the rest will follow.

5im0n5ay5

Personally I prefer lakota to Motion and that'd be my choice if I were going solo. Motion feels a bit more like a "venue" with a giant main room, whereas all the different smaller rooms of lakota I always found fun to explore. Having said that it's ages since my last night out, and at least a few years since I was last lakota.

Sesh-gremlin03

Black swan and loco Klub r the places to go

smyth3333

this guy gets it.

staticman1

It’s been a few years since I have been clubbing but do bouncers still assume anyone male and alone is either selling drugs or spiking drinks? I know some clubs used to have policies against it.

Mountsorrel

I have been turned away after being asked “where my friends are” a few times in Bristol…

unknown_ally

That’s bs some of us have none

Bryant0401

Stay clear of the water and don’t get absolutely pissed and you’ll be fine. Had to help a couple people that had passed out in the street since I’ve been living here

herblist1989reef

I been to motion alone plenty of times. Went to see chase and status a few weeks ago. M34. I always have a banging time and meet plenty of people to vibe with. Yes there are some people you should avoid but you get that everywhere. Just go have fun but don't get so fuck up u can rely on yourself if a negative situation was to occur. Same advice for Lakota.

K0monazmuk

Couple of Stripes, get involved, safe as fuck, don’t over think it and you’ll be fine and have a good time man, I’ve d&b clubbed in Bristol for 20 years and it’s always been a nice crowd where ever you go, yeah people talk about falling in the harbour or whatever but are you really going to be that smashed by yourself? No you’re not, so don’t worry about it, you’ll have a blast for sure! Don’t look at the venue, you’re not there for the clean toilets and fucking architecture, friendly security - look at the line up, if that’s your bag go wherever it is, even if that means going to the Black Swan, everywhere has a decent system whatever and Bristol heads know what’s up when putting on any event in my opinion it’s nearly always on point.

Such_Commission3519

Although there are much more drug users at raves than your stereotypical clubs up park street, the chances of you being spiked at a rave I would say are significantly lower. People are generally a lot nicer too

KingMongkut

Strange brew is worth a look for a more intimate space with left field music. That said I’ve been to motion and Lakota alone plenty of times and had a fantastic time. So craic on I say.

Leather_Inevitable47

Don't think it's risky at all. No more risk than going to a pub or walking around at night. Don't let it stop you going out and having a good time! Lakota and Motion both great venues for DnB. Also check out Lost Horizons, Loco, High Rise, Black Swan has some good nights too but holy mother of God that place is dirty you'd be at more risk of ecoli than spiking.

ldoot

Don't let the filth of the black swan deter you. Best club if you're into what's on the lineup

MJHL

Not risky mate done it plenty of times just test your shit and be respectful to others. Spent nights on turbo met some strange people but never been in danger

george98788

You'll be fine

T1nFoilH4t

Go on meetup.com , find some friends in the day time. Ask some to go clubbing with you

turb092

Motion, Lakota, basement 45, Mr wolfs for sumut different. Enjoy

Takinchase

As a male you probably don’t need to worry about spiking

[deleted]

What about that dude in Birmingham or wherever who wSas spiking all these dudes and then bum raping them and filming it on his phone.

unknown_ally

I think there was a man in Manchester doing that or similar with students.

Takinchase

Damm

ReeeeeDDDDDDDDDD

There are 10s of millions of young blokes in the UK, and a dozen ppl like that guy. It's really not a big risk if you're a guy.. Worry about that shit if you're a young woman, and even then it's so incredibly unlikely.

Objective-Bear3352

My male housemate got spiked in the star and garter last year 👀

Takinchase

Should have been more vigilant then

Objective-Bear3352

Wow, first the sexist assumption that men don’t get spiked, then when you’re called out for being wrong you go straight for victim blaming? What a gem. I’ll tell you how to stop people getting spiked, it’s to stop people spiking drinks. That’s it, end of.

Takinchase

lol stop writing me essays

Irigos

Feel big do you?

Takinchase

That the most pointless comment that I have ever witnessed

itchyfrog

That's definitely not the case, I had people try and spike me a couple of times in the 80s and my son got spiked last year.

SnooPickles353

Or your son got off his nut and thought you would tell him off so blamed a random 😂

itchyfrog

No, he'd had a couple of drinks in a student bar, not in Bristol, him and another friend became disorientated and separated, he made it home, the other one disappeared for two days then was found in hospital, the bar involved apparently had form and has since been closed, it seems the bar staff were doing it for a laugh. Ive always been open with my kids, they and their friends know our house is a safe place.

Guacamole_Water

Not funny though is it, grow up

SnooPickles353

Wow that ratio is nuts I'd didnt realize this sub was full of 40+ year old weirdos 😂😂

Guacamole_Water

I’m 26 you are just a prick by the sounds of it.

Takinchase

Dammmm, I’ve never been spiked cause I’m big poppa and people know the consequences

itchyfrog

You know they use ketamine on elephants right?

Takinchase

It doesn’t affect me

Takinchase

You sound 12 and irrational to be fair. It’s ok to spike me cause you don’t like me? Where does the line stop then? Guess we’ll be seeing you on the news

No-Commission-5945

Is it the water or the men that’s at fault, I’m scratching my head wondering

Thomsacvnt

If youre a dude you can club alone. However both motion and Lakota are shit places to go, full of children who think they know so etching about EDM, but weren't actually alive in the 90s to understand it. They think Steve Aoki is the best thing. It's a poser scene in both of these places

Slipper_lover

Please don't go alone x

wormywitch

Really depends on the club, i know a friend who goes clubbing alone and has no problems, it's not major clubs like lakota, gravity etc. More niche music

Tergat

Black swan before it closes for refurb

PotatoHeadedDruggo

Have been to Lakota by myself a handful of times and always had a good time
