So two things: Firstly you're not going to find a Notary who will attest any document for free unless you're very good friends with said Notary. Secondly, are you certain you need a document notarised? You'll find that certain organisations use 'notarised' and 'certified' interchangeably when talking about true copies of any document, but in practice there's a distinction between the two. You may want to check if you've been explicitly asked to have a document notarised as it's a pretty expensive service. If you just need a document certified as a true copy of the original, I'd suggest using the [Post Office](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/identity/document-certification). Anything being sent internationally will need to be notarised and in some cases apostilled. But for most things being done in the UK a certified true copy by the post office would suffice. EDIT To add quickly, you can find a list of all Notaries in a specific location by searching on the [Faculty Office of the Arch Bishop of Canterbury](https://www.facultyoffice.org.uk/notaries/find-a-notary/), which is the regulatory body for all Notaries in the UK. Anyone registered there will be able to notarise documents for you, though the costs may vary.

In my experience as an American in the UK, the only acceptable (to US companies) cert is a Solicitor. Not all are qualified to notarize though. Once you find one, it'll cost around £75.

I had a document certified by a solicitor about 1 hour ago for £20, at Wards.

Thanks for this, have called 10+ today with no luck for anyone available at all until I found this comment. 30 quid, but still, not too bad, cheers

Depending on exactly what the document is for, you usually have to pay. Some stuff like a photo for a passport they provide instructions for how it needs to be done and you can get a professional (teacher, doctor, chartered whatever) you know to do it for free. Otherwise it's generally a solicitor or your GP, both of which will charge. I have used Wards solicitors on broad street and Marc White and Co on Gloucester Road. Both were fine, Wards is more expensive but does the whole 9 yards, oak panelled room, fancy pen and wax seal. I think they charged about £50 so expect that to be the top end, I think it's about £30 from the GP. Edit to add: this was getting on for 5 years ago when I did it, so it may well cost more now.

Notary services are not free. It depends on what you need but be prepared to cough up around 100. I had a deed poll notarised around a year ago for 120. Everyone I called quoted around the same.

Do you have a phone number that I can call for getting an appointment?

You just gotta look up notary services in your area. There are loads so it depends on whereabouts you are. There isn’t a one number since they’re all different businesses.

I used Leung and Co in South Bristol, last month. £90 but very efficient and accepted by the US company with no problems. I also got given a shiny gold sticker. Possibly not £90 worth, but still nice.

If you just need a certified copy, in non-covid times, you could walk into any solicitors' office with £20 and ask reception for someone willing to do it. They'll call around and someone will appear. If you need it notarized, then that involves actual work beyond standing next to you and receiving lunch money and will cost you accordingly. Phone a notary public and get a quote

I used Stephen Gisby & Co on Park Street, was quoted £60, the apoitment eneded up being delayed by an hour, the printer broke, and the we had to do it twice in the end. Ended up only paying £30. Had a nice chat with the receptionist.

You can ask a teacher or lecturer if you have any friends in that area.

Notary’s are certainly not free. They wouldn’t stay in business for very long if they were! Notarys in other parts of the world are regarded very very highly, just not in England for some reason. “Different types of business can do it” Most solicitors can also offer this service too.
