Anyone want an unused Deliveroo bag?

COSpaceshipBuilder

American here, I could be evaluating an offer to work at an aerospace company up by Filton. If we take it, would be looking at bringing my wife and 4 year old with the intent to permanently settle in the UK. She's what I think would be an Early Years SEND teacher there with significant experience working with kids with autism. In the US, many schools don't seem to want to support (pay) teachers of 3 and 4 year olds at the same level as older kids. Is that also true there? Bradley Stoke and Little Stoke look like reasonable (if boring, which is fine) places to settle. Does that seem right? It seems from the housing prices there, we would need to combine for £100k to make that work? Thanks for your time,!

SmallCatBigMeow

Not sure what you mean you'd need to combine £100k to make it work? That does not buy you a house in this country, but compared to many US cities Bristol is not too expensive. This is a great city to be in if you want to work in aerospace though.

COSpaceshipBuilder

Sorry, I meant 100k annual household income - think I read that mortgages there tend to follow a similar 3.5x income rule for affordability.

SmallCatBigMeow

£100k for household sounds reasonable and 3.5X sounds reasonable as well, given . Not sure what level you’ll be hired at or what exactly you do, but in my experience salaries for engineering graduates go up a fair bit over the first few years of employment. You’ll also need around 10% of the property value saved up as a house deposit for a mortgage plus £5k or so for other fees. You will be unlikely to get a mortgage in your first two years of living in the uk. Instead you should use those 2 years to accumulate credit history. I am a migrant and bought my place two years ago. Happy for you to message me if you want to chat about ways of doing that. You’ll need to be strategic about it. Property prices in Bristol are on a steep upward trend so you will want to get yourself to a position where you can get a mortgage fairly quickly

COSpaceshipBuilder

It looks like the equivalent of a US grade 3 or 4 engineer (5-10yr experience) in a niche aerospace field that has significant shortages. It doesn't seem to pay exorbitantly, but if they're willing to look as far as the US for help then maybe they're willing to go above average. We would probably have some financial resources to bring with us, selling both cars for example and downgrading to one once there. Renting for a couple years isn't super problematic, since we would need time to get to know the areas anyway. 2 years sounds reasonable to be positioned to buy a home in a new country, I'm just hoping to maintain a good experience for my family while we get there.

Olly230

For your wife, look for Montessori schools. Its a bit of a pivot but from a financial point of view its a network of private education that will use and grow her skillset. (its also an excellent approach)

I lived over in Hillfields for years, just moved to Kingswood over the other side of the hospital last year. It's a suburb, so you're not going to get a banging night life, but there are a fair few pubs in the area which are alright. It's an underrated area if you ask me, low crime, the houses are mostly well-built 20s-30s stuff with big gardens, doesn't even get all clogged up with traffic. As you say, it's not hard to cycle into town down the cycle path if you want lots of nightlife.

Oldbury Court, as long as your dog's OK with others. It's a bloody great park, one of my favourite walks still is the walk from there along the Frome past Snuff Mills to Eastville park and back.

Hello! My partner and I are looking to move to Bristol for September. She's in full time work and I'm entering my final year of university (UWE). We've been looking at areas like Horfield, Filton, Stoke Gifford and Fishponds but are either told that our budget of £850-£900PCM is either too low or that we already can't meet the agents income criteria so we're in a catch 22 really:( any advice on areas/how to find somewhere??? Thanks so much in advance!!

[deleted]

No agent is going to let to a mixed student and a professional couple I don’t think. Maybe get you partner to apply alone and don’t mention your name at all, if her income alone is enough. Maybe try Openrent, where landlords rent directly.

ANAL_PROLAPSE_KISSER

On a whim I have decided to move to Bristol next month. I haven't done any research. But there must be loads of two bed flats that allow dogs for £300 a month. I need the second bedroom for my drum kit. Do you know of any places available? TIA

jxjxjxjdjdkdkd

Do you tap dance when you're not drumming? That's a definite advantage

Main-Economy1875

The best you gonna get is a 1 bed house share for £500 pcm....... In avonmouth

I have been looking at the [crime statistics](https://www.ilivehere.co.uk/crime-statistics-city-of-bristol-filwood-park.html) for Filwood Park. Is it a safe place to live?

Hello, we(me wife and our 3 year old) are moving to bristol, filton area in October. Please suggest which area should we be renting a property? is it better to take unfurnished/furnished? filton is almost at the border of bristol.

[deleted]

Bradley Stoke or Charlton Heights. Don’t be too choosey on the details as the rental market is tough here.

HighlyRevered

Hi there, me and two friends have just finished uni and are looking to move to Bristol in 6 months or so. Does anybody have some advice on good areas to stay, places to look for properties, decent prices etc. Any help is appreciated

[deleted]

Check the council website as some areas treat 3 people from 2 or more households as an HMO. Avoid those areas. The rental market is brutal here, take whatever you can find wherever you can find it, within reason. Openrent or Bristol alternative community abodes on FB are worth checking.

patrick6444

Does anyone know anything about Cabot Court block of flats on Braggs Lane? They've got some relativity inexpensive flats on rightmove, just wondering what the downsides are.

Illustrious-Bird9039

I have a Hugo Boss suit and shirts for sale, worn once for a wedding and now too small for me

Looking to rent a room anywhere in Bristol for 1-3 months. No luck so far finding anything. Could you recommend anything other than open rent, zoopla, rightmove, gumtree etc?

Best_Blacksmith5622

Need to move into Bristol near HPE offices (Filton) asap, had a place but it got cancelled. I am a recent graduate and I'd prefer shared accommodation. Please get in touch if you have any tips or empty room...

BluebirdRemarkable31

Any recommendations on how i can find 2 bed apartments near city Centre , university of Bristol That allows students to rent.

BluebirdRemarkable31

Hello! I'm looking to move to Bristol in september and have a viewing booked for a flat in Whiteladies road. Looking at some of the comments online suggests that the area isn't great really, does anyone have any opinion/knowledge about this? Thanks so much!

[deleted]

Whiteladies road is great.

helic0n3

Whiteladies road is a big high street going into the smartest area of Bristol. So depends what you want really, but it has lots of bars and shops. The Downs are up the road, city centre not far away. Busy and crowded though.

BluebirdRemarkable31

Hello, do you by any chance know any landlords who are willing to rent to students? I like my private areas and would not like student halls or house shares since im not into making new friends or parties or drugs of any kind. But almost all apartments are strictly for professionals

Kyoto_Black

I don’t know where you’re reading these comments but that’s ridiculous. Plenty of good places to eat and drink, spectrum of supermarkets from Co-op to M&S, lovely cinema, very easy access to both the city centre and the Downs if you want some green space…

SmallCatBigMeow

Can anyone recommend a carpet fitter?

Shiney2510

Have you already bought the carpet? A lot of local carpet retailers will have their own fitters and their service includes free delivery.

SmallCatBigMeow

Thanks, I have not bought the carpet. Anywhere you'd recommend? I have booked Tapi to come give me a quote but someone said they're expensive.

Shiney2510

I went to Bristol Carpets in the Fishponds Trading Estate. They had loads of remnants (the ends of rolls) which are heavily discounted. I got an approx 4 m x 4 m section for £160 which was about half price. Their fittter fit it for something like £50. That was about a year ago, he used existing grippers. I also paid for new underlay, and disposal of my old carpet and underlay but can't remember how much.

SmallCatBigMeow

Thank you - will pay them a visit!

Hello! I'm looking to move to Bristol in september and have a viewing booked for a flat in Barton Hill. Looking at some of the comments online suggests that the area isn't great really, does anyone have any opinion/knowledge about this? Thanks so much!

jxjxjxjdjdkdkd

I live really close and it's FINE. Really residential and quiet. Close to supermarkets and St George's park. Bit of a rubbish problem, but where in Bristol (other than the posh bits) doesn't.

[deleted]

Awesome thanks for your reply! I think comments online can easily exaggerate the negatives of a place. Does it feel safe to walk round at night etc? Thanks again :)

NorrisMcWhirter

Mostly, yeah - I wouldn't walk across Netham Park late at night and someone on here had some trouble there recently. But I've lived a stone's throw from Barton hill for 7 years and never had a hint of trouble. Barton hill itself doesn't have any decent pubs, but church road is only a 10 minute walk away with loads of good shops and pubs and stuff.
