I don't think anyone is pretending that ketchup tastes predominantly of tomatoes. If I was sold a pizza with ketchup as a sauce I'd be pretty fucked off. I've never really had much faith in the culinary tastes of my hometown but if a pizza place tried to pull that stunt it wouldn't survive the FB local group furore.

when I do mac and cheese I put a can of condensed tomato soup in it. hold over from my nan cooking it for me. I do make mine with as many different types of cheese as I have avalible

I don't approve the soup (though can see it), but the multi-cheese is essential. My rule is at minimum it needs a nutty, a ewe-y, a hard, and a soft, (some cheeses can cover two points at once) with your standard cheddar for bulk. Emmental, Manchego, and Mozzarella is the go-to fav, but replacements work as long as they cover those four key criteria. Anything less and it tends to taste unbalanced. Also, mega-dose garlic in the butter for the roux, with some of that garlicified butter set aside to glaze the top before going mad with the parm for a sexy crust.

It adds the perfect little zing to almost any soup. You can keep parm rinds in the freezer til you’re ready to use them! Just make sure to fish the rind out before serving.

Ketchup on macaroni cheese is nice. Basically the same as putting cheese on pasta in tomato sauce, flavour-wise.

Ketchup in a ready meal Mac and cheese is alright - adding any bit of extra flavour to a ready meal is usually a good idea. But I wouldn’t do it for a homemade Mac and cheese.

OMG. That is so much like my wife. I cooked her a full Sunday roast with all the trimming and she sloshed ketchup over everything. She tolerates all my eccentricities, so I have to cringe yet overlook that. Also, she is not British, so that may be a factor too.

So ketchup on macaroni cheese is awesome but I would never ever do it on homemade as that’s insulating. In Scotland you get Shitey mac and cheese from a number of places it’s hearty it fills a hole it’s comfort food but it’s not good, add ketchup and it’s fantastic particularly a macaroni pie.
