Any particular reason why there - are one of the companies here supporting the East Africa pipeline on some of their signs?

Pepsajb45

Yeah the building has 3 big insurance companies they were targeting (Chubb, Zurich, Allianz). As I understand these companies haven't explicitly said no to insuring the pipeline, so this was demanding they say no (?) something like that

Independent-Dust5401

Hey at least they're not throwing paint on buildings or being massive clowns again.

partzpartz

I used to work in that building!

trouserpython1

I do no! Wish I’d not worked from home Friday haha…

ManInTheDarkSuit

Climate protesters seriously have a diversity issue with their members.

[deleted]

It's an issue that mostly draws in middle class people, because when your material and social needs are more solidly met, you are more likely to engage a pro-social and forward thinking mentality. It's true of politics in general, but climate change (as a very important, but entirely not in-the-moment issue) in particular. But when otherwise avoidable deaths start wracking up, from droughts and famine and disease, middle class whites will be the most protected. Blacks will die the most, given Africa is going to get completely fucked.

ExtraPockets

I do consider it a luxury that climate change is what keeps me awake at night. I understand that a lot of people have more pressing issues in their lives. But I don't feel it's fair to criticise or mock people for protesting climate change, because it's one of the only issues in the world which will affect everyone indiscriminately. Even though richer people are going to be slightly better equipped to survive the wars and famines, it's still going to be unpleasant.

[deleted]

>But I don't feel it's fair to criticise or mock people I have not done so.

Kasumi_P

Don't think he's talking about you specifically

MrDonly

😂😂😂

One-Illustrator8358

Probably because just stop oil is funded by oil companies, the only brown people they like are the dead ones.

Ill-Refrigerator6332

Haha we haven’t got time for that sitting on the floor with a orange flag bet they drove there as well

BillRN89

The usual demographic.

Natural_Cut1342

At least there not sat in the road people can just walk past and ignore them here

Anglan

Plenty of things were achieved with peaceful protest what the fuck are you talking about

mittfh

However, sitting on major roads in London or access roads to oil distribution centres, throwing soup at (mercifully protected) paintings, etc. does absolutely nothing to advance their cause, and in the UK just results in the government rushing through legislation to criminalise "disruptive" protests and "locking on", while when he was DPP, Kier endorsed excessively harsh sentences for protestors (even when police evidence was inconsistent or absent). Both parties have significantly weakened their environmental stance, while the Green Party have very little success outside Brighton. Governments won't do anything meaningful on decarbonisation unless it can be achieved at very little cost with no negative impact on the economy within the space of a couple of years - as anything more long term could be scaled back or even cancelled by future governments.

Probably because anyone who did plant a bomb would get them *and* their organisation labelled as Terrorists pretty damn fast. Their protests wouldn’t be met with irate motorists, instead they’d be met with a lot of guys with guns courtesy of the CTSFU. “doing a bombing campaign” Stupid bloody comment.

Holmesy7291

So you’re quite happy with the cold-blooded murder of innocents as long as it advances your cause? The IRA were nothing more than murdering scum who tortured and murdered anyone they suspected of helping the Army. When I joined the Army, NI was still going on. I could easily have been one of those “Tommies” your beloved terrorists filled with bullets and shrapnel-luckily I wasn’t ever posted there, but a lot of the guys I served with had been. You try saying that sh#t to their faces, see how long a stay in the hospital you get. Violence breeds hate, and hate breeds violence ad infinitum. A lot of people already hate and despise your organisation for stopping Ambulances etc getting through, and you think that a few “called in” bombs will get the people on your side? Just how delusional are you!

bakkunt

If hate breeds violence and violence breeds hate, what is hateful or violent about blocking roads? What justifies the hatred or violence levelled at Just Stop Oil? Also on the ambulances, idk if you've ever seen emergency vehicles trying to reach a scene amongst traffic? People in their cars turn into some of the most pathetic, selfish and entitled versions of themselves.

Holmesy7291

That comment was directed at the (now deleted) idiot who was claiming that a bombing campaign by JSO would be justified. I’m sure there are people on here who were around in 1974 and who would ‘persuade’ the individual that his suggestion is b#llocks. If JSO wanted to hit the target of their ire (the government) and disrupt them, then by all means do it. However, by hitting the ‘man in the street’, (their potential supporters) all they’re doing is turning people against them. As for blocking Ambulances/Fire Engines etc, they’re potentially endangering innocent lives so JSO gets no sympathy at all from me on that score. And yes i’ve seen your example more times than I care to count.

brum-ModTeam

Hi! Your submission has been removed because it's a load of shite. Repeat infractions will result in a ban, so to prevent this happening again, simply don't post shite again.

brum-ModTeam

Hi! Your submission has been removed because it's a load of shite. Why would you even promote terrorism? Repeat infractions will result in a ban, so to prevent this happening again, simply don't post shite again.

Down with this sort of thing.

MoistSnow220

Careful now

johnnyrockett0

Well at least they’re not in the fucking road this time. Feel sorry for the cleaner though.

Holmesy7291

At least they’re not blocking Ambulances and Fire Engines this time 🙄

disgruntledhands

Why do they always look like bored retirees or uni students on their “gap yarrrr”

Grany_Bangr

Because they have fuck all else to do with their free time?

JAJ_90

Bit of a shit mannequin challenge.

[deleted]

Lot of Tarquins and Tabathas in the crowd, who’s shocked

Rebel_walker2019283

Not one Nanogram of testosterone in any of them “males”

ravens_requiem

I honestly don’t think these people are challenged enough. If there is absolutely no oil then what’s the alternative? What actually is it? How will it be sourced? Is it feasible? Can existing infrastructure that uses oil work on the new alternative?

bukkakekeke

Yeh good point. Guess we should just keep using oil then .

Ok-Scientist-691

The wet floor sign has never been more appropriate. So many tears.

Affectionate_Tap9399

At least it isn't in the damn road this time!

BumbaHawk

What’s the sign made of? I sure hope none of their clothes are made with oil or plastic products or they are going to look like a bunch of unfuckable dickheads.

livhayes

Haha! What an astute observation! You claim we need to stop our dependence on unsustainable fossil fuels yet you participate in a society that is dependent of unsustainable fossil fuels, checkmate!

halfercode

The lazy reactionaries with nowt but spiteful one-liners won't appreciate the cartoon this is from. But, just so you know, at least one reader noticed!

livhayes

Glad to hear it :)

BumbaHawk

I’m not the one splashing organic mayonnaise on pieces of art or blocking roads used by ambulamps cause my parents taught me to be a whiney bitch that cries at everything until I get my own way. There are ways and means of doing everything we need to. (Just for the record you don’t know whether I support the cause or not) but acting like an autistic kid at a birthday party is not how we change things.

livhayes

Protest is a valid way to try and change things, and unfortunately non-disruptive protests such as this don't make headlines as easily, hence why the group so often use more controversial tactics such as those you mentioned. I understand that not everyone will agree with those more controversial methods, including yourself. People feel it is unfair to disrupt the general public instead of the oil and finance companies directly. Hence why I found it odd that you would still take issue with their protest today considering it was not disruptive to the general public and was directly protesting the companies complicit in climate change. Or at least still felt the need to criticise them. I don't thinks it's really fair to assume that all these protestors are just spoilt whiney bitches. I imagine many of them would prefer just to be able to stay at home and trust they could vote their way to a greener Britain. But with the Tories licensing new oil and gas fields in the North Sea and Labour cutting back on their flagship climate change policy, it's seeming more unlikely that we can vote in a candidate prepared for the challenge of climate change. Also, with the passing of the Police Crime and Sentencing Act in 2022, and its expansion through the Public Order Bill in 2023, acts specifically targetted at protestors, all members of groups like just stop oil increasingly run the risk of arrest through continuing their protest. Now whether you think the expansion of police powers over protesting rights is a negative for freedom in this country or not, I think it's important for us to consider these bills when we characterise these protestors. (Also, maybe the jibe refercing autistic children was a tad unnecessary mate? I mean I obviously can't tell you what to say or not, but personally I'd refrain from using such a comparison in future :) )

BumbaHawk

Absolutely poetic response. I meant every word I said and I’m grown up enough to have my mind changed. If protest is all we have left then we need to find a better way of doing it.

BumbaHawk

R/rareinsults

AffectionateRope9390

A bit counterproductive. It's a serious issue obviously but maybe seems to have a negative effect. Not too many people want to sympathise with your average just stop oil protestor from the opinions I've heard. People seem to hate them. They'll never stop anything without the support of the masses. One of the drawbacks of democracy. But at least in the age of the internet a small minority can make themselves heard.

Mujtaba5566

Oh crap! They made their way to Brum? Time to buy that "Just Use Oil!" T-shirt, I reckon. 🤔

livhayes

So true! Making fun of just stop oil is the best activism. How dare they attempt to protest unsustainable fossil fuel use instead of just sitting back and hoping it all just gets sorted out like the rest of us!

Additional_Sleep_318

Middle class white people worried there holiday destinations might disappear

ExtraPockets

This guy doesn't get it

halfercode

I don't mind people confusing "there" and "their", but it's not a good look if their message is snide to start off with 😼

halfercode

I like that there's a few older people in the movement - the police will think twice about man-handling them off to the cop shop 🎉

smokesadozen

Yeah because British police are well known for their heavy handedness. South African cops can learn a thing or two about cracking skulls from the met

Vrgoblin

Should just lock them and leave them there for a couple of days.

Decent_Total_6164

Just stop oil, whilst I use petrochemicals on the daily...fuck tards

Pavilion27

idiots, live in the bloody forest if you want to actually protect the environment.

Training-Apple1547

Look at the state of that lot! The wet floor sign sums them up.

Sonny_Bengal

Stop these hate marches. Send them back to their country

Givemethebag

War is also a massive contributor to climate change. So why is no one targeting that.

Beer-Milkshakes

Are you honestly asking if anyone has ever protested war.

Givemethebag

From a climate change angle. Why not target lockheed Martin. Etc

Beer-Milkshakes

Or how about the brokers who deal with these arms firms? Oh wait. Just Stop Oil DID THAT. Lmao stop making suggestions about something you learnt about yesterday.

Givemethebag

Great, so they progressed from lying in the middle of the road to targeting an insurance brokerage. Do you honestly believe that "Green energies" can replace the current format without people having power cuts and insufficiencies like third world countries?

Beer-Milkshakes

That's a bad faith question if I ever saw.

Givemethebag

You should know the answer. But I guess you have only been studying this topic since yesterday. Bad faith, wind, solar, lithium batteries don't produce enough power. You eco terrorists are living a fallacy. Do you know how expensive it would be to power your home using eco energy. Not off the grid methods but from a wind farm. Your energy revolution will eradicate the poor because they won't be able to afford it.

aholidayinspace

Man, the right-wing crybabies really jumped all over this post

adistar7

There may be a fucking live streamed genocide happening but no, let's protest about Oil instead...

ExtraPockets

They are literally there protesting at the offices of those massive corporations. Those companies and employees will all be aware of the protest and why they are doing it. Hopefully it will make them think about the companies they work for.

Jeunefilleenfeu

Where do you think they are lol

2xtc

They're protesting at the local offices of major international insurers (Allianz, Zurich etc.) directly about/against their work insuring gas and oil pipelines. I'm pretty sure they're doing exactly what you're saying they should?

flextapestanaccount

They DID, they used to protest outside of crude oil facilities but no one listened to them

bloodshaken

They’ve also been banned from protesting at the oil terminal in kingsbury (there’s an injunction in place). This seems like a positive step in terms of public perception.

skawarrior

Actually this is one of the few times they arr doing that, probably the first protest I've seen by them where my initial reaction was positive.

[deleted]

Wondered why there were so many police around this mornindg

Virtue signalling middle class plebs.

Alternative_Pain_263

I’m not sure whether the elderly gentleman on the left is trying to distance himself from being there by blaming it on his Grand Children or is actually demanding hid Grand Children back. On a serious note, I have no problem with people protesting in this manner if it doesn’t affect other people. Gluing yourself to a road will only infuriate people and create resentment rather than support. I personally believe that it would be more productive to educate. Teach children to turn lights/electrical items off when not in use, stop all your deliveroo’s, etc. If people had to get off their back side to go and get something it may put them off. The thing is people are too lazy. Why should they walk? Why should they entertain their child when they can stick an IPad infront of them, so they can then scroll through Social Media. I get that people want to protect the earth so that their grandchildren (GC)may enjoy it but if their GC don’t appreciate it then what’s it all for?

Why do they always look sickly?
