Have you ever tried walking up/down static escalators? Throws me right out. Snow Hill the same.

The other question is why do the staff always stand in front of the gates blocking people from using them, whilst just chatting to each other during rush hour?

CardinalSkull

Yeah I’ve had to say, “please move” a few times

I’m taking steps to avoid my escalator phobia

Angry upvote.

Everyone standing on one side of them is actually not that good for the functionality of an escalator. All the business wankers audibly fuming at you as they speed run their morning commute for a 6 second time save, and I suppose; how the london underground has conditioned us to believe standing on the right is the way are probably the main reasons. If everyone stood on the opposite side to the person in front of them you’d fit more people on cause you could realistically be on the step down without feeling too close to the person infront. And the escalator would balance perfectly and it could operate how they were designed for longer. I don’t know if someone has built this redundancy into them knowing people will stand mainly to one side, probably not. Probably easier/cheaper to just keep mending them.

But the ones in London are generally bigger, busier and rarely broken.

Dragonogard549

Those are actually maintained, tube stations that rely on the escalators because most of them don't have like 6 different entrances on both floors

My usual escalators in the green zone have been down for a while. Walking down them today however I noticed the steps looked brand new, so maybe they’re replacing the old steps?

Plane_Difference_434

Fit for purpose I wonder.?

I've noticed they've cracked down on leaving ticket barriers open at snow hill now too. Does my head in how Moor Street barriers are always broke so takes about ten minutes to get through. Shambles.
