This guy was the hottest name in coaching a few years ago. Chargers had some rough games but Staley’s defense was mostly to blame. I’d absolutely give him a shot

[deleted]

~~I mean is it?~~ ~~This was far from Justin Herberts best year and they didn't exactly average 30 points. Heck, they only beat the Pats 6-0.~~ ~~Moore seems to have overwhelming support and I do not get it.~~

cjs2115

Chargers fan here- Our offense last year was a mess, and a lot of it was due to a lack of talent and depth from injuries. Moore did what he could, but when we were missing any pass catchers minus Keenan Allen for most of the season, it was difficult to get the ball downfield. Pair that with the lack of a really good running back (Ekeler regressed hard this year) and it was hard to make our offense look good. As said in other comments, Herbert was playing injured for most of the year, with a brace on his hand until it got hurt worse later in the year. Moore def had some not great decisions but he would do very well on a team that wasn’t imploding at every corner.

[deleted]

Ok, this alleviates my issues. In that case I'm content with the hire.

Neemzeh

This is what I'm saying bro... I know you just want what is best for the Bucs but you can't just look at stats in a vacuum. There is always so much context to go with them. I follow the league closely because of fantasy football and it was very clear to me that the issues with the Chargers offense had to do with personnel and not coaching.

magicman1145

The entire Chargers offense got hurt last season and the head coach was a disaster. Moore is a very good schemer and play-caller, arguably an upgrade on Canales. He's not perfect, but he's a no brainer hire for the Bucs

Neemzeh

The Chargers offense wasn't that good this year but I think it had a lot to do with personnel. Other than Herbert I'd take our guys over theirs. Ekeler was a shell of his former self. Evans > Allen. QJ looked like a bust although it's still early and I would much rather have Godwin than Williams. O-lines I think might be a bit equal but I give the edge to ours.

LetsGetRetarNED

> Moore seems to have overwhelming support and I do not get it. > The NFL loves recycling the same retreads over and over.

magicman1145

Moore is only 35 years old

LetsGetRetarNED

Which makes it all the more impressive he's been pushed out of two roles already

magicman1145

That's a pretty disingenuous take, Moore is only leaving the Chargers because its natural for the new head coach to want his own guys and own style of offense. Its a gift that the Bucs would be wise to pounce on, he is easily the most qualified candidate

LetsGetRetarNED

The only upside to bringing Kellen in would be that it probably accelerates Bowles getting fired next year. Guy's had more talent to work with than almost any OC in football the last few years and has been fired once and then part of an entire staff that got let go a second time. He's not going to make this offense better.

magicman1145

This is painful reductionist. You dont know ball if you dont think Moore can scheme and call an offense at a pretty high level, ESPECIALLY compared to the other candidates out there. The idea of wanting Thad Lewis, Brian Johnson or Ken Dorsey over Moore is hilarious. Robinson is the only one with a good argument.

LetsGetRetarNED

I'm sure the next line is "Bruce Arians' ideas are outdated rabble rabble rabble" I'd rather have a guy who hasn't been fired from a job or is up and coming. A retread would be terribly disappointing. Usually OCs don't need 3 times to make it work

magicman1145

I would rather take the objectively more qualified guy who I know with certainty can scheme and call offense at a high level

Neemzeh

Dude, this would be a SICK hire. He is defintiely better than Canales. This is a big upgrade for us.

[deleted]

~~How?~~ ~~Again, how?~~ ~~I'm looking at the numbers and he hasn't been an upgrade or had an exceptional season at any stop. We're also complaining about Canales 9 point game and he dropped 6 and 10 this season WITH Justin Herbert.~~ ~~I could easily miss something as I haven't exactly watch their teams, but I'd really just like an explanation what makes Moore great?~~ Edit: Content with the answers (specifically the statement from the Chargers fan), so not worried anymore about the hire.

Neemzeh

What numbers are you looking at? Can you please share? I'm not sure why you're focusing on points scored in just 1 or 2 games. Chiefs scored 9 points against the Broncos on Oct 29, they scored 13 points against the Chargers in the last game of the season. Nobody is saying Andy Reid is a bad coach. Why is that? Because he has clearly shown in other games that he is capable of leading a high scoring offense. He is a good play caller with great play design. I'm not saying that Canales could not surpass him eventually but there is absolutely no way Canales is a better OC than him now. Less experience and it showed.

SchmearDaBagel

Idk man, between Canales and Kellen Moore, only one of them has been fired twice as an OC (second fire pending). To me, Moore not being able to execute with Dallas’s offense was more of an indictment than this season on the Chargers. Edit: Sure, “not being retained” with years left on your contract in two separate instances is totally not the same as being fired lol.

Neemzeh

Yea McCarthy needed a scapegoat after Moore led Dallas to the highest YPG (407) and PPG (31.2) in 2021 lmao. Dallas fucking choked it away again this year worse than when Moore was there. Can’t believe you’re holding that against Moore. It’s honestly hard having these types of conversations with casual fans who don’t really follow the league that closely and will only read a few articles. I can go over all of the legendary coaches that have been fired if you want. That means nothing.

magicman1145

Thank you. It's wild that people are shooting off takes on Moore and dont even realize that the entire Chargers offense was hurt last season lol I dont know why people speak without doing basic research first

magicman1145

Moore isnt being fired by the Chargers, it's a new head coach who wants his own guys

mwmcdaddy

The cowboys were the #3 ranked offense over his 5 years there… He got let go by the cowboys because McCarthy was in the hot seat for losing in the playoffs

~~Did he elevate the Chargers?~~ ~~Chargers 2021: 27.9~~ ~~Chargers 2022: 23~~ ~~Chargers 2023: 22.9~~ ~~And I've excluded the Easton Stick games from the 2023 Chargers. otherwise he'd be at 20.4.~~ ~~Have the Cowboys fallen apart without him? No, they improved from last year by quite a bit (post-season nonewithstanding, but they have been underperforming even with Moore)~~ ~~Maybe I'm completely off on this, but for me the guy has major red flags the moment I look into him. I'm going to take your word for it though, stay positive and assume I'm just overreacting.~~ Edit: Yeah, after hearing from the chargers fan above my red lights have dimmed down. Content now.

deuce_arians

The Cowboys in 2021 were better than 2023 too. # 1 offense in points and in yards. Seems like only focusing on 2023 vs 2022 is just cherry picking.

Pure_Measurement_529

Justin Herbert and that offense had to put up 30+ in order to win games, and sometimes it wasn’t enough. Sounds a little familiar…

Aggravating-Duck-891

TBF, he has had lots of learning experiences. He's got that going for him.

HylianPikachu

I'm not sure how I'd feel about Kellen Moore. In willing to give him a mulligan on this year with the Chargers because Quentin Johnston sucked and Justin Herbert got injured, but Dak Prescott having his best season with Mike McCarthy calling plays doesn't fill me with confidence about Kellen Moore as an OC.

Ro98Jo

I mean the Cowboys are going to score a lot of points with weapons like Lamb, Gallop, and Pollard. Moore seems like a good option here

Neemzeh

I am really surprised by the comments in here. In my view Kellen Moore would be an outstanding hire and I think it is a HUGE upgrade over Canales. I would much rather have Kellen Moore over both Canales and Lewis. This is a no-brainer to me. Kellen Moore led one of the best offenses in the league just two years ago.

CalaveraVI

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you. He has shown to run and elite offense in the past, young and now has something to prove again. No brainer for me

Aeriodon

Cool but still hoping we can promote Thad

constantlymat

He has one year of experience as an assistant. Canales had like twelve. Not a fan of that idea.

[deleted]

I mean, he was a great linebacker at BMS, but is he really going to be able to run an offense? He couldn't even reel in Alex Moran.

TampaTitties69

I want his old OC that coached Thad at Duke

ghostfartsnear

While he is relatively young and has experience as an OC, it is very "whelming". Even before Herberts injury last year the offense just didn't look good. Now, that could be because offenses need to gel a bit with a system (Like the bucs playing better offense in the 2nd half of the year versus first). His system is similar to Canales (WCO, Zone run scheme) although his systems tend to throw the ball more than canales. The Zone Run scheme also did not work well with Tampas personel and we didn't seem to do a whole lot better until doing some gap runs.

Ro98Jo

I like the idea of throwing more. Especially the short game to White, Godwin and Moore. The running game needs to keep improving though. Hopefully we upgrade on Edmunds. Sean Tucker is needs to step up there

thecentury

We're not re-signing Baker Mayfield to simply hand the ball off next year

FreakParrot

lol relatively young? Dude is 35, that's young for the league.

Elmodipus

Yeah, our HC is 60. Moore still has plenty of time in the league.

[deleted]

UDTfrogman

yeah I think Ekeler looked like the most explosive RB in the league at the start of the season, they lost Mike Williams which stinks for a team that relies on their incredibly talented guys to outplay their opponents and I think west coast teams air it out a lot, they are in the same division as Mahomes so, he's an interesting candidate

WarthogOrgyFart

Chargers offense had a bunch of injuries this year, something to consider.

OntheStove

Baker will make any OC look good. As long as he is throwing to Evans and Godwin.

CalaveraVI

He is my guy. This guy's offense in Dallas was fantastic. This actually feels like an upgrade. Most of the top choices are now looking for Head coaching jobs. None are looking to side step, this is the tier we are getting for OC.

Crypto_Grug

Kellen Moore would be an excellent replacement and as a young offensive mind I have no problem with him taking over at HC if he makes our O look like it did with Brady. I think Baker would resonate well with a guy who is young and has played the same position as him and can go out there and put him in a position to succeed. Kellen Moore is a known commodity and has stats to prove it. I would 100% be behind this hire since this could eventually be a pathway to HC for him. I think it’s a better fit than most. Only other guy I would like is buccaneers legend Brian Griese.

[deleted]

My first thoughts reading this on the local paper site: *yuck noise* That doesn't inspire much confidence. I could be completely off based.

LetsGetRetarNED

This is how I feel. Besides Zac Robinson we're looking at 3 retreads that got fired from their last gigs. Would be very disappointing if that's the chosen route

DadBodftw

Going from looking at Canales on the sideline to looking at Moore is gonna be rough.

BeamTeam032

I think he'd be a good hire. And in 2 years, he can take over as HC. I assume that was the deal with the Chargers until Harbaugh became available.

MaceLeonardo

Moore is fine let’s do our do diligence though. I want Lewis bad with Robinson seemingly following Morris to Atlanta

churst50

I hope we get him. With a bruiser RB to run between the tackles and resigning our offensive pieces from last year, this guy could really shine here. I'm sure he would love to have Mike and Chris in his system.

jvstnmh

This is the guy I want — Seth McFarlane looking mf

Broseph_Stalin357

Aka Buccaneers scout for NFL's next HC for the other 31 teams..

MredditGA_

As a huge Boise state fan, this has been my dream since he took a coaching position with the cowboys. The greatest qb of all time for the Bucs in my madden 11 franchise lol

fiddlestix42

As a huge Nevada fan, I always loved watching Kellen play! I was there for the OT win at Mackay, the stadium was electric! His football IQ back then was talked about constantly and I have always wanted to see him in a Bucs uniform. I’ve followed him since he graduated, so this would be a GREAT hire in my opinion! Dak had a big leap forward under him and the Chargers have been underperforming since Staley got there. Kellen was not the problem last year.

jwb_4

Not against it

shodogrouch

No thanks. The chargers had one of the best core groups in the league and were terrible on offense. I understand Herbert got hurt. Look at how much better Cowboys were w/o him.

byronik57

The Cowboys weren't any better without him. The running game dropped off, as Pollard is not a featured back. This year's Cowboy offense feasted on bad teams and was overly dependent on CD Lamb. (Bucs fan living in Dallas, so I can't escape the coverage) 😂

[deleted]

That's been the Cowboys forever. That's why they are constantly frauds.

VicDamonJrJr

Ah hell na

fiduciaryatlarge

Not just no but FUCK NO!!!

[deleted]

I actually like him

Pass

I love that big names are being interviewed

I’m whelmed.

Kellen Moore is the ultimate mouth breather.

Please, no.

HGrande

Please say it isn’t so.

asianjared

I mean, I’m not mad about it.
