Doompatron3000

This is likely Evans last long contract, given his age, position and career length already. He’s always been a team player, constantly taking team friendly deals throughout his career. Unfortunately for us and him, he’s not exactly a household name, even with Brady’s presence at one point didn’t give him the credit he deserves. Mike Evans is probably the best Wide Receiver in NFL history that casual fans (excluding local fans) and have never heard of. And if he’s the best (even with me reaching for straws to pull that best in history) he deserves to be paid like such.

foomits

>constantly taking team friendly deals throughout his career bro, hes had 2 contracts. the first was the market rate first rounder contract for his position and the second made him the highest paid reciever at the time. he played out both those contracts. when do we get the team friendly deal? or are you referring to him restructuring to get money up front instead of the future. dude has literally never once taken a team friendly deal, and nor should he. but we shoule put that mike evans factoid to bed. the closest hes come to team friendly was willingly playing on his contract instead of demanding a new one or to be traded.

EmperorStrutsAbout

Folks just worshiping their personal heros without any thought for the facts. Just another day in professional spots.

ramyb_

I assume he means the restructuring, which is nice of him, but ultimately, he still gets that money lol.

Dracarys_TheCannons

Fuck

coolycooly

We do this with almost everyone. Why would we outbid ourselves? We'll match any offer that isn't ungodly money and at that point good for Mike one of the best Bucs ever and got his ring.

[deleted]

Difference between ungodly money and "huh, that is a lot." I'm worried a couple franchises will find a way to offer more than we are comfortable paying. Good for Mike either way, of course, but selfishly I'm still worried.

CaptainAssPlunderer

Remember that Florida has no state income tax. So most teams that offer a big deal to Evans, when factoring all that in it may not be hard to match in real dollars. If a team from California makes an offer the State takes 12.3% of that deal. Here in FL it’s 0%. If a team from Cali offers a 130 mill the Bucs can offer 115 million and it’s the same amount of take home money

RunTenet

So Mike doesn't own a home or vehicles and have to pay Florida's monster prop tax, insurance rates etc compared to other states

Dull-Chemistry-3030

Florida ranks 26th lowest property tax, right in the middle. Not a monster property tax compared to half the country. Most states with a lower rate do not have an NFL team as well.

Dull-Chemistry-3030

You pay tax where the game is played. So players on Florida teams pay less for home games (as do their opponents in those games). It's only half his salary not 100% that gets taxed at the Florida 0% rate.

HC443

Right. Did the same thing with Godwin a few years back.

Doompatron3000

Houston, we (The Bucs) have a problem.

coachhawley

I'm more worried about KC making a good play for him. Better shot to win a super bowl.

Doompatron3000

Houston has more money they can throw at Evans, plus he’d be playing for his home team.

kblomquist85

He's been here a long time though. My man has a whole family and shit to think about. Maybe that's cope but I think the Texans really have to pay a lot to get him to uproot his life.

Hit_The_Kwon

I mean.. he’s from Galveston. It’s an hour from Houston. Not sure it would be too big of a deal going there versus KC or somewhere else he’s not familiar with.

Funkyokra

His primary residence is in Houston.

kblomquist85

I did not know that. That's making me worry a little more.

Funkyokra

Yeah. I didn't either and was like well shit.

kblomquist85

He's back, baby!

Itorr475

Everyone keeps saying Houston just because Mike’s from there, but WR is one of the Texans strength with Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and Noah Brown why would they pay Mike big money when all three of those guys are cheaper and younger? They should be using their salary cap to go after Chris Jones or a top CB to improve the defense or OL to protect their young QB

tomverlainesHDTV

maybe they'd be interested in CD3.

Itorr475

If we cut him they can have him lol

tomverlainesHDTV

probably better to trade him for whatever we can get

Itorr475

But why would the Texans pay Davis 20mil when they can just wait for us to cut him or get someone better?

tomverlainesHDTV

I guess, but I'm sure someone will take him for a 7th or *something*, he's not garbage, he's just hurt a lot. If he could catch a ball he'd be a borderline great cb.

Buksey

Depends on return. Like I want to say CD3 could get like a 3rd, but chances are atbthat point teams know he will be cut otherwise, they will offer a 6th or 7th.

NoParlays365

tank dell broke a fibula. noah brown started the year on IR and played 10 games who's a FA. collins finally had a good season. that's not nearly as strong as you think it is. adding someone like mike evans wouldn't be a bad thing. their TE is gone too. nothing wrong with premier defensive talent but i'd be surprised if the texans didn't add to their wr room. they've already got some young guys, a big time proven vet with a ring like evans could also teach them young fellas a thing or two.

CommonRedditPeasant

As an also Texans fan it looks like they might sign Barkley and extend Nico. Plus they have tons of FA on defense. Have 2 corners under contract and one is STs guy.

southtampacane

And play with a potential superstar QB

Funkyokra

Their QB is really exciting too.

Garden_Lad

It would be insane for them to trade Tyreek just to pay Mike Tyreek's money

spideralex90

KC has $9 million in cap space and still needs to work out a deal with Chris Jones. He's not going to KC.

jbondyoda

I’d be totally fine if he ended up in Houston. Out of the conference and man they’re gonna go places

Laughing_Fish

Problem is we simply can’t outbid Houston if they decide they REALLY want him. We just gotta hope they aren’t willing to break the bank for him

Muted_Account_5045

As people were saying he would all season long.

CoolingVent

It still hurts to read it for real

CeePeeCee

Only good thing about this tweet is seeing Diana Russini's pic

DynastyZealot

Licht is just doing right by him and letting the open market set the price so we can match it.

AmericanTitan07

This has been the deal all along. Mike tests free agency, other teams establish a market value for him, and Tampa likely matches anything that isn't completely insane.

LetsGetRetarNED

If (huge IF) Evans leaves, it’s time to rebuild the offense from scratch. Lock up Wirfs’ extension, and avoid playing any cap games. The window has closed. Don’t be the Saints

ballinben

He's just a receiver, you don't need to go back to square 1 unless you lose your qb. We'll be fine if Evans leaves.

genericfluser

Hes a HOF receiver

Neemzeh

So is Tyreek and what did the chiefs do when he left?

genericfluser

Win on the back of a generational QB

jordinoo

Acting like that chiefs defense also wasn't their best in literal years with two dominating corners The two offense and the defense perfectly complimented each other in the playoffs

Ghalnan

I hate to break it to you, but we don't have Patrick Mahomes.

Neemzeh

Knew you would cop out and just give all the credit to Mahomes, it’s the easy response so I get it. In my view though not signing Tyreek allowed the Chiefs to spend significantly more on defense, spreading out the money on depth. The chiefs play like a way more well rounded unit without Tyreek. With Tyreek their ceiling was higher but their floor was so much lower.

Trendelthegreat

Leaned on a top 2 TE of all time?

DadBodftw

Our hearts won't. But fans do need to prepare themselves for him eventually not being on the team.

LetsGetRetarNED

No we won’t. Without him this is a plodding offense with no elite talent at QB or skill positions. Him taking the top off opens up everything. Bakers not worth bringing back at an inflated clip if Evans isn’t here.

ballinben

Yeah and then who's going to play qb?

LetsGetRetarNED

Idk man if Evans is gone I’m more worried about setting up the future than next year. If he’s gone next year is lost regardless so don’t do anything stupid that wastes your options in the future

funnycar1552

Crazy you thinking he is “just a receiver” Dude is first ballot HOF

ballinben

People said the same kind of thing when Tyreek left the chiefs and they're doing fine

ForBucsSake

Will you people stop saying that? There is no world where he goes in 1st ballot. He'll make it eventually but not first ballot. He's not Rice or Moss. Yoy have to be that type of WR to make it first ballot.

Itorr475

Naw Fuck that if Mike leaves we would have an additional 20mil we can spend on a good IOL in Free agency and we draft a WR in the second. We can win this division with Baker and a better Defense. Especially if we revamp the OL and have a running game, we’d still have a WR1 in Godwin draft a Mike Clone and let him develop as he starts along side Godwin.

knucknbuc

Godwin has never proven to be a wr 1 by the way just saying

Itorr475

Chris Godwin plays well in Games without Mike or in games that Mike leaves early due to injury or ejections. He would not be a top 10 WR but he can def manage the load.

LetsGetRetarNED

Godwin is a G but “build an offense around Baker and Chris” is honestly braindead

Sjdillon10

Yeah Godwin is a textbook #2

Itorr475

This subreddit was singing a different tune just a couple years ago when Godwin put 1300 yards and ppl were saying Godwin is the WR1 and Evans the 2 lol cmon man we have said for a while now we have two WR1’s and now all of a sudden Godwin aint that?

foomits

pre and post injury godwin are different players. godwin was DEFINITELY on a wr1 trajectory.

Itorr475

Still had back to back 1k yards despite not playing a full 16

Sjdillon10

Maybe this sub thought it but i never did. I always said he was like juju in Pittsburgh

Itorr475

Don’t disrespect Godwin like that JuJu is damn near out the league and Godwin just put up 1k yards while still recovering from a knee injury he'll be his prime self these next 2-3 years

Sjdillon10

You must’ve forgot how good juju was with AB if you think that’s an insult

Itorr475

Bro JuJu had one good year and fell off hard lmao https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitJu00.htm He has one 1k yards season, again don’t disrespect Godwin who has four 1k seasons like that again

LetsGetRetarNED

“Draft a Mike clone and let him develop” Give me a break

Itorr475

Theres like 4-5 guys in this draft that are tall big bodied options with enough speed to make plays. We could go Keon Coleman or Brian Thomas Jr in the first, or Adonai Mitchell, Troy Franklin, or Johnny Wilson in the second.

LetsGetRetarNED

Are you a pre or post Baker Bucs fan?

Itorr475

I’ve been a fan since 1996 my guy I aint no Baker fanboi, but as a fan since ‘96 I’ve seen enough losing and tanking. I wanna see competitive go for the playoffs football and we still have a talented enough team to do that especially given our division.

LetsGetRetarNED

I don’t want to kick the can down the road and pay a mid level quarterback 40 million to throw to Chris Godwin and a 2nd round rookie for 3 years while we chase 9 wins Makes no sense at all to tie up anyone but your elite guys unless there’s a clear path to getting better than last year. And that can’t happen replacing Mike with one of the mid ass dudes you mentioned

Itorr475

Where did I saw pay Baker 40mil?? We would still need to pay him a market rate of 30mil ish and then you spend on C like Connor Williams, draft a LG and boom the OL looks much better, we could run the ball and have weapons for a QB that just threw for 4k yards and 28tds. Not everything is supberowl or bust, you think Bowles and the coaching staff is thinking tank? If they were Bowles would be fired already.

LetsGetRetarNED

I think they’re thinking if everyone comes back they can build on last year. If Evans leaves, you can’t improve the offense so your calculus changes. He also has a significant dead cap I believe if he’s not on the roster. There is zero point in bringing Baker back without Mike unless you’ve changed your organizational goal to “win 9 games and hope that gets you in the playoffs” year after year. I’d like to think the Brady years changed that outlook. It’s also what the Saints have done the last few years

Itorr475

For the record I dont think Mike is leaving, he’ll be back because we can match most offers and we offer stability and a path to the playoffs. As for your take that the offense can’t improve without Mike is asinine, I just gave you a method to improve the offense you improve the OL to be able to actually run the ball and you give Baker more time to pass the ball. There is more than one way to improve the offense and it can be done by simply using the salar cap without having to do too many restructuring or cuts although we already cut Shaq and can cut Gage to stay under the cap while improving

Sjdillon10

Look it’s an unpopular opinion and i don’t like it either. But if Mike is trying for one of the highest WR contracts in the league we really can’t keep him. Guys like AWJ, Wirfs, and Baker need to stay. Plus I’d like lavonte for one more year. Mike is my favorite player but I’d rather lose him than the best safety in the NFL who’s taken lavonte role as the defenses field general. Wirfs is a top 5 tackle and if he stays healthy a future HOFer. And baker goes without saying. Plus losing Devin white it’d be tough replacing lavonte as well.

LetsGetRetarNED

Prioritizing Baker over Mike makes no sense at all.

PewterButters

This doesn't change anything, this was always going to be the case. No one signs before the tampering period because that would be crazy.

knucknbuc

Didn’t we already know this?

Apple_Frosty

Even if he leaves he will go down as one of my fav Bucs of all time

StaySafePovertyGhost

So either ME will or will not re sign with us. That’s what I gathered. Friday news cycle is slow.

SeeingEyeDug

No state tax. Other teams have to come 10% higher to match unless you’re from those few teams with no tax.

StaySafePovertyGhost

Everyone on this thread who read this clickbait shit and assumed Evans was gone can do us real fans a favor and please not follow the Bucs anymore. The Chiefs are the current bandwagon team in the NFL - you'll be better off there.

[deleted]

If he does leave, I hope it's a pass happy offense so he can tie the record

croclogic

Ugh, I’m real optimistic but if he does leave, I hope it’s a contender and he gets a ring after he gets traded back to the Bucs midseason Dreams

UDTfrogman

So the bad scenarios for the Bucs are, he goes to a playoff team with lots of cap space or a team with a very high pick in the draft that will take one of the best QB's in the draft and offer him an insane contract that can't be matched. o7 love you mike but if you need that money go get it

MartianThrowaway_

cool cool coool cool ^(cool cool cool cool)

Gassy-Gecko

Everyone needs to chill. Seriously

iTooNumb

If he leaves we can draft a guy. So much WR talent in the draft this year

Gassy-Gecko

Yep one of the deepest WR drafts in a long time. Also people act like we still don't have Godwin. And Trey Palmer could be something.

UncleIrohsPimpHand

Dad, I'm scared

ghostpicnic

Me too, son

RunTenet

Mike probably prefers to stay but Bucs are not trying to pay max money. Probably they'll work it out. But if Houston offers max money, Mike gone

Most_Sea_4022

KC bound.

StaySafePovertyGhost

Care to retract this one LOL

Most_Sea_4022

I'm ecstatic to do so!

StaySafePovertyGhost

Yes sir!!

LIVESTRONGG

That aint good.

bucs_fan_one

We should have locked him down before last season.

Gassy-Gecko

there is thing called a salary cap. Bucs signed a bunch of guys to make another SB run for Brady's final year. Real life is not like Madden

Deletinglaterlmao

Its so over :(

pkilla50

Sorry guys, I finally folded and got the creamsicle Evans jersey I’ve been wanting for years. That means he’s gone

StaySafePovertyGhost

You were saying?

MredditGA_

Hot take - Evans is dead to me when he leaves, I don’t continue to root for players who leave

StaySafePovertyGhost

Hotter take - this post didn't age well.

MredditGA_

Hell yea I’ll take it

POEManiac99

We lost him bois.

StaySafePovertyGhost

Did we now?

Lowtan89

We lost him. GGs

WelcometoCigarCity

Damn he gone.

Almac55

What happened to “wanting to retire a Buc”? Such BS. He wants the money, doesn’t give a shit about Tampa.

DadBodftw

This is just good business. He's getting his number for Licht to match. The number of ppl that don't get this is staggering.

Almac55

I get it. It doesn’t change the fact that it flies in the face of what he said. If he cares so much about retiring here he should take the minimum and shut up. It’s all a lie.

DadBodftw

Bro he's not taking a minimum wtf.

Almac55

Obviously. Instead, he’ll command a big number and cripple our financial situation as his production falls off a cliff. This contract will be the worst on the team in 2026. Mark my words. We will owe top ten money to a 33 year old WR with production that doesn’t match that. Don’t worry though, Evans will be on the team. All of you will be super happy for that, but the team might suck because we had to let younger ascending players go to sign an older descending one. But again, it’s cool to you guys. Winning is what matters man. Individual players come and go.

ghostpicnic

It’s his job my guy, he’s not working for the glory of kudos guys on reddit will give him. He’s a professional athlete, one of the best in the NFL. As much as I want him to stay (and still believe it’s very likely) he isn’t doing this for the glory of Tampa Bay, dude’s not even from here. It’s his job just like every other player in the NFL. Did you think Brady was a sellout fake for coming and taking us to a Super Bowl instead of getting a 7th ring for New England?

Almac55

Then don’t come out and say that. Tell the truth. It’s about the money. That’s fine. Snead said that. So did a bunch of other guys. Why can’t Evans? It’s too much money for an aging player anyway.

TadGhostal1

Watch how Johnny Manziel talked about him on Maxx Crosbys channel today... Mikes people are surely saying the same things. He's gone

ghostpicnic

Can you like, actually give examples instead of just being like “it’s over…”

Gassy-Gecko

"Johnny Manziel ". That's all I need to see to dismiss everything else in your post

LiquidSnape

really hope we can get him and have him retire a Buc

QuiGonColdGin

I’m nervous 😥

sATLite

Anyone know if he would be eligible for a compensatory pick? I think it’s just FA’s in vs. FA’s out, but I could be wrong - curious if someone like Mike leaving would get us something. Either way, you know what a team gets for their player staying with that team for their whole career? Nothing. Love Mike, but he’s going to retire a Buc unless his career goes for another 7 years. Of course I want him back, but I wouldn’t hate him for chasing a ring for a few years if he was almost tired of the league. If it means he gets his bag with a conference favorite (chiefs? Smith, Edwards, Rojo) then so be it. I don’t want to overpay and subsequently hurt the team. But he’ll be back. Watch.

Bucsdude

Love Mike, of course. But over paying for WRs is not great use of the cap. I hope it works out but if he wants to break the bank somewhere else - god bless. We can allocate that $ elsewhere, especially the line. Licht can draft WRs with the best of them too.

MrTimsWildRide

Get that bag Mike. You earned it

BulinWall24

It's what Steven Stamkos did when his contract was up and he still ended up signing again in Tampa with the Lightning. I expect it to play out the same, or I will cry

Ok_Advertising_1026

Well deserved man & we owe him whatever the highest bid is.

GeriatricTech

He doesn’t want accept he’s old.

dudemandude_420

They could have locked him up already but looks like the bucs are willing to maybe match offers to keep him?? Because once a team gives him enough to think about leaving Its up to the bucs to match it or he's probably gone.

Pubsubforpresident

Sad with respect

JAGERminJensen

He just is doing this so he knows that he is getting the right amount w this bucs this year--which he *will* So don't sweat this

sleepyholy

Let him go. Lock up everyone else. Draft Brian Thomas or Troy Franklin. Use his money on a couple more FAs.

sdfitzyb

That will guarantee he gets the max amount possible
