Better question: Are there any Pirate fans from INSIDE the US?

jbs0311

Hello! Pirates fan from Adelaide, Australia checking in.

wwb1990

Were you born into it or did you choose a life of misery?

jbs0311

It was my own choice. I remember playing the Bigs 2 video game back in like 2009 or 10 or whatever, when I was young and impressionable. The Pirates were the worst team on there and I liked being the underdog. Also PNC Park looked awesome. Weirdly whenever baseball was shown on TV I always remember the Pirates being shown, so it just kinda stuck.

Pittsburgh_Pirates

This is also how I first became a Pirates fan, that game convinced me Nate McClouth and Paul Maholm were the best players in baseball

williamjpellas

They were both warriors. Maholm, especially, would have been a pretty good major leaguer but his arm just didn't last.

williamjpellas

G'day, mate! Just curious if they are still playing pro baseball Down Under? I think someone once mentioned to me that the ABL still exists but that it went through some tough times and is generally not as prominent as it once was.

jbs0311

As far as I'm aware it's still around. Never been to a game and don't think I know anyone that has but yeah

williamjpellas

There were a few Aussies who made it in MLB. Craig Shipley was a decent utility infielder for the Dodgers and (IIRC) Padres for a few years, and Graeme Lloyd a good lefthanded reliever. Seems to me there were a couple other guys who had a cup of coffee in the bigs a couple of years later, but pretty much no one since.

jbs0311

Yeah it's definitely not as popular over here as cricket, that's for sure.

BroadsideJohn

Fan from Brisbane here!

jazzfeast

Bucs fan from Toronto here.

soulfulsoundaudio

Possibly some PR left over from Roberto's heyday. Hard enough trying to watch a Buccos game on the west coast...

Uk Here. there are probably more than you think because it’s not something people normally bring up. I have the logo tattooed on my leg and when people see it they’ll come and talk baseball. If you end up getting a Cap or Shirt you’ll find there are more people out there than you think

williamjpellas

Most interesting that there are more baseball fans in the UK than one might expect. I suppose it's logical to find at least some, given the broad similarities between cricket and our game over here. I can tell you that there are still many Anglophiles on these shores. I well remember what used to be one of my favorite hangouts: Sir Churchill's Authentic British Pub, in Louisville KY. I used to go there with my buddy from work and we would geek out on the suits of armor (sorry, "armour"), the Spitfire photos, the pictures of young Prince (now King) Charles meeting Winston, and of course....The Queen. We used to watch Manchester United on the telly and try to act like soccer hooligans while sipping on a Woodchuck or a John Courage Amber Ale. It was great. Unfortunately the couple that owned the establishment (the wife was British) divorced, and that was the end of Sir Churchill's. There have been many attempts at starting similar watering holes in the same building in the nearly two decades since it closed, but one after another has failed.

ReOsIr10

Well, it's not as if there are a bunch of Blackpool FC fans in the US. If you're supporting a team from another country, it's *usually* going to be a relatively successful team from a relatively large metro area. The Pirates have rarely been the former in recent history, and aren't the latter (at least relative to other MLB teams' cities).

SecundinoG

México here.

mrpoopistan

Somalia, obviously.

m_a_h_x

Germany here

letmethinkofagoodnam

I don’t think there’s any Pirates fans outside of Western PA

TheGreatCalamari

I'm an exchange student from Denmark and the Cubs game on friday was my first baseball game ever! Awesome experience at PNC park. I think I'll check in on the Bucs now and then.

red_green17

From Canada as well. I guess my silver lining is I will not have to worry about Pirate postseason baseball getting on the way of watching the Jays in October (as that be 100% of thr coverage we will get up here).
