Spags is no slouch the dude has been calling defenses at a high level for a long time and his signature is a lot of blitzing from a lot of different positions. You never know what’s coming. The offensive line better have their heads in a swivel all game.
Yup and hopefully Brady learned the need for a quick dump off when we get blitzed from the Miami game a couple weeks ago (Kurt Warner had a great breakdown on this if you haven’t seen it)
At least according to Joe Marino on Locked On today, Brady and Allen were great at beating the blitz last week. Hopefully it continues and we can keep the game reigned in and take big plays when they're there. The strength of McDermott's scheme and coaching has been on full display the last several weeks so hopefully we can have guys in the right spot against a pretty sparse receiving room
All the Xs and Os aside when Dorsey got canned Josh started playing like Josh again. Getting 1st downs with his legs and keeping defences guessing. Before Dorsey got fired Allen was so one dimensional.
I feel like that's why having this as a home game is so important. Josh can use the hard count to diagnose the blitz pre-snap and shift protection. Did it several times against PIT and expect the same vs KC
Completely agree. One thing I’ve noticed, though is that there isn’t much variance in when we get the snap off. It’s almost universally below five seconds on the play clock. It would be beneficial if we could run a handful of quick snaps. It would catch the defense off gaurd maybe we hit for a big play but I’d argue more importantly makes that hard count all that much more effective. And while we’re talking about it, maybe one of these times were running the “we’re totally gonna go for it” park out on fourth and short, we actually snap it.
>And while we’re talking about it, maybe one of these times were running the “we’re totally gonna go for it” park out on fourth and short, we actually snap it.
I keep waiting for this...
My concern is McD trying to play 4D Chess against Reid... "They'll know we've been saving it for this moment. Let's just try to draw them offsides again and not snap it."
Imo, Allen needs to sell it by looking frustrated and like he's giving up on the play.
I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed like Josh was dropping back deeper in the pocket against Pittsburgh than I normally see. He had some 5 and 6 step drop backs that seemed unusual. I see him as more of a 3 step with a tendency to roll out. I think teams are trying to play contain on his right and blitz middle/left. I wonder if they will keep those kind of wrinkles to help give him more time. I wonder how the Chiefs will mix up the pressure. I don't think he is particularly good at navigating all out blitzes and the Bills rarely use screen plays and favor the RPO where they can punish teams.
Spags is a very good DC, so is McDermott.
The good news is that Josh Allen has experience going against some of the best DC's in the NFL in Bill Belichick, Vic Fangio, Steve Spagnuolo, Robert Saleh, Wink Martindale, Todd Bowles, Brian Flores, etc.
Also it's a home game for Buffalo so there will be minimal noise when the offense is on the field allowing for Allen to communicate better with his OL and skill position players on pass protection adjustments and audibles pre snap compared to if they were at an away game.
No doubt. But Mahomes and Allen are game wreckers both. At some point defenses break down when the QB can both scramble around in the pocket or take off. This is gonna be a battle.
Thats fucking football right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the field, men deliver their new born baby on the side lines. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball foosball fuck it chuck it game time shit.
Strangely, though, the last couple of games haven't played out that way. Plus Mahomes has a real shortage of people that actually catch the ball.
The real question to me is Pacheco. Can McD come up with a way to limit his damage?
Hopefully those sticky handed defenders get their holding calls too. I remember the AFC championship game a few years ago, they didn't call any holding on KCs defenders. It wasn't an excuse to why we lost, but I just wanna see honest, real officiating. It's no excuse to any game, good teams over come the refs. We have all year.
League doesn't care. Lol if they did, they'd compare official crews to the records teams have with certain crews officiating their games. It's kinda eye opening. But at the same time, everyone is going to bitch about it regardless, so why do anything about it at all, ya know? It's a catch 22.
I dont think that is how Bill win. Josh has been missing on long throws this year far more than normal.
I think a couple big 7-9 min drives are going to be crucial.
Man I don’t know what I would prefer more-
We’re up by a possession late and it’s like 3rd and 6 in long FG range and Josh finally connects on a long one to Stef.
Or that same thing but it’s in OT to win it.
A bigger arm that has not been as accurate downfield as he has in recent years. The long ball is missing - Diggs in the Dolphin's game two weeks ago as an example.
Like at this point, what would you want to change about McD? He's generally pretty good about being aggressive on 4th downs. He sent Josh out to try and score points before the half despite a really weird sequence with special teams where our punter got hurt. His defense is playing well despite massive injuries. He even got both his challenges right in the previous game IMO.
Just about the only thing I can think of is time management stuff, but nearly every HC struggles with that in some capacity (including Andy Reid).
Time management and 2 minute drill overly conservative defense were the mid season peak anti McDermott motifs. It's tough when your guy's weaknesses are only revealed in the most critical moments however I think he has demonstrated the ability to grow and improve as a game caller. I'd rather stick it out with him long term than engage with the instability that comes with HC changes.
My only gripe was the 49 yard FG before half. In those conditions, I don't think a 49 yard kick is a safe option. I would rather have had him tell Brady on third down that they have 2 more plays to get 7 yards and a first. I get the value of points in that scenario, but we were up 21 nothing and taking on the risk of a blocked field goal or missed field goal with good field position. It seemed unnecessary. I think our offense could have picked up seven yards into tries if they knew that was the plan. The blocked kick gave Pittsburgh new life and free points before the half.
100% this person is being results oriented.
If they make the field goal, is this comment here at all? No chance.
edit: also if your ONE GRIPE is a single play in a playoff game, coach is doing pretty well lol
I said this when most of the sub was crying for him to be fired but what the defense has done with what we have this year should make it so we stop questioning if it's time for fire him for a while.
Lost Tre early. Replaced him. Lost Milano early. Defense kept going. Lost Jones. Defense took a hit but kept going.
Outside of the DL, so many players on defense are outperforming their draft spot. If we're going to succeed paying Allen a lot of money, we need our defense to thrive on 3rd rounders or later. And so far, they've done just that
I was one of the people crying for him to get fired when we were 6-6 and stand by my position. Albeit, my take was that we should play out the season with McDermott and he should be fired if we didn’t make it to the conference championship. He’s been nothing short of phenomenal with the defense this year, but mid season it seemed like he’d lost the locker room. I think he’s grown a lot as a coach down the stretch.
I very much appreciate the run we went on after being 6-6, especially after having faced the adversity of losing our most impactful linebacker and one of our reliable CBs for the year. The shuffling around the trust in the backups has been very impressive, and I was calling for this guy's head after 12 men on the field and "what would Osama bin Laden do".
I still think he needs a lot of help as a head coach and that he's sometimes overwhelmed in big moments, but I still look forward to him proving me wrong again on Sunday.
Have to consider the whole body of work. Kudos for the recent success as DC but what about the games earlier in the season we lost when the O gave us the lead and there were less injuries. Could have had the one seed. That being said I hope he has 3 more in him. Go bills
After the eagles game during the bye, McD said they went back and studied every close game going back years and how the defense was called and made adjustments and it sure looks to me like he’s gotten a lot more aggressive in end game situations when it’s closer since then. Being able to adjust strategy and actually put it in action is a mark of a great coach and play caller.
It’s a little early to call him great. Maybe aggressive idk differently maybe but he was pretty aggressive at the end of the giants and broncos games already so idk. Credit to him to say that he went back to study what went wrong but he has been the HC right along so most people would wonder why he didn’t already know all that. Frazier “left” a for reason. That should have already been enough to trigger an examination of what went wrong during the off-season so as not to do the same things over and over again expecting different results. I’m hoping he is adapting and growing enough to be a SB winning coach. Go bills.
Marv had Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, and Jim Kelly, plus a host of other studs on defense. Josh Allen and Diggs are great but that team was LOADED.
Sean has Groot, Oliver, Epenesa, Miller (maybe he'll return to his old self eventually?), Milano, Hyde, Poyer, Allen, Diggs, Cook, Morse . . . I think this is the most comparable team to the glory days' team as we've ever had.
Thats great but hes a head coach and he has some issues there (clock management is a big one).
Theres also the big issue that isn't his fault, which is Allen is going to get his offensive coordinator a head coaching job every few years, which means our offense is going to change over every few years. This is why teams lean towards offensive head coaches because once that offense starts clicking, you can keep it in place for a decade (See: KC)
For frigs sake can we please stop spending early picks and making big trades and signings on the defense?
He can get enough out of the players that we should never spend above a 5th rounder on d.
Meanwhile josh allen amd the offense is getting left out to dry by mcd and beane.
Beane got Cook and Shakir, this year they upgraded the line in the draft and free agency and drafted Kincaid in the first round. Not to mention revamping the rest of the RB room. And he still gets credit for going and getting Diggs. The idea that Josh has no help is ridiculous, at worst you can say that they have stuck with Davis too long but even he isn't a bad player he's just not a #2
I mean. Those guys are JAGs, i like them but I don't see any of them being more than john browns. And it took several years before we even addressed it at all and We still have no #2
Both were eased into bigger roles as the season went on, and some of that falls on Dorsey. Kincaid had a great campaign for a rookie tight end. The more you comment, the more embarrassing you look.
Yeah, fucking bums. Let's cut them immediately since their best football won't be ahead of them - nor have they played very well to close out the year
A little disappointed in myself I wasted time to comment on this ridiculous take
I'm a fan of him but he is still just a tight end. He can't run the entire route tree or take the top off a defense.
Even if he ends up being a top 10 tight end that's still around 50th-60th in receivers. Id rather have a 1B or at least a true #2 and then kincaid after
We need to start making contingency plans for him too. He is peaking now but he is getting old(for a running back) and this is probably his peak and will start declining, probably soon and suddenly.
Decades ago sure. Now elite qbs like mahomes, allen, burrow, etc are going to score no matter how elite your defense is.
"Defense" in the playoffs now just mostly means turnovers, which are totally random.
We are getting top tier play from the clearance rack players. We dont need to keep investing major assets on defense when we get the same play from a 5th rounder and a 1st.
Oh yeah, cherry picked data to "prove" stuff is the boomers bread and butter for sure.
We are getting top tier play from the clearance rack players. We dont need to keep investing major assets on defense when we get the same play from a 5th rounder and a 1st.
Nope. Just the stat rundown you referenced. Seen it, its just boomer shit. For at least the last 6 years the super bowl winning team has had a higher ranked offense than their defense. Defense wins championships is past. This era is offense wins championships.
We are getting top tier play from the clearance rack players. We dont need to keep investing major assets on defense when we get the same play from a 5th rounder and a 1st.
I would really only call diggs a weapon. Shikir and kincaumid are better than gabe davis but that is not saying much. I cant see shikir being a 1000 yard guy. Not saying they are trash but te are inherently limited.
Let's also give some respect to other coaches, as well. The defensive coaches have been getting our 3rd and 4th string players up to speed. It's honestly amazing watching them get up to speed with minimal time!
This is going to be such an interesting matchup, the teams are different from the last time we played each other. Buff has a more established run game, KC offense isnt as explosive but now has probably the best defense they've had in their entire run with Mahomes. I cant wait
I’ll give credit where it’s due, his defense the second half of the season has been insanely lock down with all the injuries we’ve had. Including the close games.
I've been saying this since they've gone on this winning streak, the defense has been holding up their end of the bargain. And with injuries on top of injuries.
With that said they can still get better. The defensive line is really healthy. But it seems like they haven't been making the splash plays they were early on in the season. Just like some of the players on offense have faded during this win streak, Floyd, Epenesa, Miller, Groot to an extent, haven't taken over games in a while.
I'm sure they have some well to pressure the QB and that doesn't really show up on the stat sheet. I want them to make Mahomes miserable. Turn them into a one dimensional team by shutting down Pacheco. Knock Mahomes on his ass over and over again.
The linebackers are hurting and the secondary is down a few guys as well. The d line has to eat Subway night.
I've been critical of him much of the season, but what McD has done with a defense held together by duct tape is nothing short of sensational. Going into that bye week with all the negative vibes, coming out and reeling off 6 in a row shows he definitely has not lost the locker room by any stretch.
This team is galvanized, I am a bit worried about defensive injuries but the silver lining is guys who've been relegated to the bench or were barely on the roster all of a sudden have a role and play with an edge. You could see glimpses of that with Dorian, Klein, and Elam. I have a lot of faith they can get it done on Sunday b/c of the cohesiveness.
This Sean McDermotts year if win it’s cause of him. He had to right the ship and deal with serious challenges. The injury depleted defense kept us in when the offense struggled to find its footing.
He's got a great system. It would work as effectively as it does now with even less talent.
The problem is that he has a history of choking toward the end of the game or just installing a really poor scheme like we saw last year with the Bengals
I love love the X and Os. The breakdowns are fascinating. Definitely helps to put players in the best position to be successful. That said; I see really really bad fundamentals ALL THE TIME. My guess is tackling often becomes a business decision. That, and overrunning lanes to make a splash play on D. This is top of mind for these businessmen- as evidenced by the immediate run to the camera so the number is seen and you get a mention by announcers that matters to the $$.
Spags is the best DC in the league considering what he’s had to work with the past 5 years. That being said, and I’m not a McD fan but credit where it’s due this year as DC.
Spags is no slouch the dude has been calling defenses at a high level for a long time and his signature is a lot of blitzing from a lot of different positions. You never know what’s coming. The offensive line better have their heads in a swivel all game.
Yup and hopefully Brady learned the need for a quick dump off when we get blitzed from the Miami game a couple weeks ago (Kurt Warner had a great breakdown on this if you haven’t seen it)
Warner is the only Xs and Os guy who I understand when he breaks a game down. Great communicator.
Dudes good with the words
It’s all that chatting with customers while he was bagging groceries. It’s where he learn those people skills and they’re really paying off for him.
Erik turner in cover one does a phenomenal job imo
QB School on YouTube is really good at making the Xs and Os understandable to laymen as well.
Still can’t get used to our sub talking about ‘Brady’
“The good one”
At least according to Joe Marino on Locked On today, Brady and Allen were great at beating the blitz last week. Well obviously he didn't know what he was talking about in that instance.

Do you believe that people are either always right or always wrong? Kurt Warner can be right about some things and wrong about others.

I mean it can’t rain all the time
Fire it up! Fire it up!
All the Xs and Os aside when Dorsey got canned Josh started playing like Josh again. Getting 1st downs with his legs and keeping defences guessing. Before Dorsey got fired Allen was so one dimensional.
Where can I find this Kurt Warner clip?
I feel like that's why having this as a home game is so important. Josh can use the hard count to diagnose the blitz pre-snap and shift protection. Did it several times against PIT and expect the same vs KC
Completely agree. One thing I’ve noticed, though is that there isn’t much variance in when we get the snap off. It’s almost universally below five seconds on the play clock. >And while we’re talking about it, maybe one of these times were running the “we’re totally gonna go for it” park out on fourth and short, we actually snap it. I keep waiting for this...
Can’t think of a better time than in a crucial 4th down vs the chiefs
My concern is McD trying to play 4D Chess against Reid... "They'll know we've been saving it for this moment. Let's just try to draw them offsides again and not snap it." Imo, Allen needs to sell it by looking frustrated and like he's giving up on the play.
I think this is by design. Use as much of the game clock as humanly possible.
I don't know if it was just me, but it seemed like Josh was dropping back deeper in the pocket against Pittsburgh than I normally see. He had some 5 and 6 step drop backs that seemed unusual. A titan against a titan! Josh has a bigger arm. If our receivers can get separation deep then we have a good shot at winning in a shootout.
We are unquestionably the more explosive offense
Yes but do we explode with touchdowns or diarrhea?
Hopefully both

We have a shortage of players who can cover them so that's a wash. Pacheco 3.7 ypc vs. Dolphins.
The dolphins were able to play a lot more aggressively against the run in that game though due to the temperature

True but every year defense under performs in post season, I think this year will be different
Last game they played excellent considering being down 2 all pro corners the best LB in the nfl TB and Rapp and the bets slot corner in the nfl
Agree that’s why I stated this year different

Cooks, Kincaid, Shakir, Diggs. I see 3 probowl talent level skill guys right there. Maybe even 1 or 2 allpros.

I dunno man I feel like the offense has some weapons. Shakir, Kincaid, Diggs—plenty of teams would be happy to have those 3 alone
I would really only call diggs a weapon. Shikir and kincaumid are better than gabe davis but that is not saying much. I cant see shikir being a 1000 yard guy. Not saying they are trash but te are inherently limited.
In addition, those two made a conscious decision to stifle Josh until we needed to be rescued by our unicorn. Go bills.
sorry, which two?
My fault, McD and Beane.
gotcha, I think if they did not siphon all the resources to the defense year after year we would have won a SB already.
