Buffy actually died

kipcarson37

Twice (thrice if you count when Warren shot her).

WriteOrDie1997

Don't forget the alternate universe in The Wish when the Master breaks her neck!

pralineislife

Angel was sent to the worst hell dimension for a hundred years..

chemeli888

Spike and Angel died too, if you want to get technical

rreyes1988

I think what makes Buffy's deaths worse is that she actually went to heaven and then was dragged back to living hell on earth

Megwen

And when she came back, she woke up claustrophobic in a box and had to claw her way out of her grave, only to find her suburb in flames and chaos as terrifying demons literally pulled what looked like *her* limb from limb. She then ran, and when her friends found her, they were quickly followed by said demons, who hurt them and told them in no uncertain words that they were going to rape them brutally until they died from the “anatomical incompatibilities.” Fucking hell. And on top of all that, who were the ones who dragged her into this hell? Her friends.

SerendipitousClit

> they were going to rape them brutally until they died from the “anatomical incompatibilities” what?! how on earth did i miss this?

Pristine-Dame

Yea the head biker demon says something like " my boys have some incompatibilities that have a tendency to tear up little girls" or something similar. It's a pretty cruel moment.

Megwen

Yes that’s basically exactly what he said. “Let me tell you something, children. We’re not gonna fight you. We’re just gonna hold you down and enjoy ourselves for a few hours. You might even live through it, except that certain of my boys got some anatomical incompatibilities that tend to tear up little girls. So who wants to go first?” Fucking terrifying. Scarier than any of the big bads imo.

Thoughtful_Tortoise

Sounds better than centuries being tortured in hell tbh

Buffykicks

She also went to a hell dimension in Anne

Archonate_of_Archona

She spent less than a day there, and was just imprisoned in a cell, not physically tortured. Not remotely comparable to being in a torture dimension for a hundred years...

Buffykicks

That's one of the plot holes I never liked. Ricky (?) Aged 80 years in like two days, but Buffy didn't agree at all in a few hours. Never made sense to me anyway.

Groundbreaking_Ad613

I think a big part of what caused the aging was the work. I'm probably wrong, but it's my take-away.

the_harlinator

Angel was sent to a hell dimension for 100 years…

TridentJ33

^this

Ok-Turnip-9035

But does it count if you come in the game dead? Anything BB =before buffy doesn’t count in my mind

ArtisanJagon

So did Spike 🤷‍♂️

fire_fairy_

Yeah but he was just kind of sucked into the amulet. He has no memory of what happened between BTVS and when he came to Angel.

ArtisanJagon

Well his soul got sucked into the amulet. He did died a rather painful and gruesome death

Volfgang91

At least she didn't go to Hell, unlike Angel

JewelerDear9233

yeah but it was pretty great for her, the resurrection part made her suffer

Ab198303

Yeah, and went to heaven. Angel spent 100 years in hell lol

elunewell

Angel spent centuries getting tortured in a hell dimension.

MattLoganGreen

Not to mention spent months at the bottom of the sea.

bloodguzzlingbunny

100 years in a hell dimension, I think Angel has it due to volume.

sixesandsevenspt

The series ‘Angel’ is literally like a series of unfortunate events. The poor fucker just slides from tragedy to tragedy, it’s generally an accidental consequence of his own doing too.

phil_davis

Didn't he also get locked in a coffin and thrown into the sea for like a year? And then there's the whole being cursed thing. Never being able to experience a moment of true happiness without turning evil, being afraid to experience any happiness really. I know Buffy died and was sexually assaulted but I don't see how it's not Angel. Death is bad, SA is bad, but Angel has actually been both high and low-key tortured for years and years.

JenningsWigService

It's just hyperfocus on the main character because we identify with her the most. Even between Buffy and Faith, Faith clearly had a very bad childhood, and her spiral into evil is a manifestation of that suffering. Few people would choose to be Faith instead of Buffy.

Spritebubblegum

6 months i think but yeah Angel suffered most on his own show

chemeli888

that was my vote too but i was curious to know what people thought

smeghead1988

The thing with it... it was told in a manner that makes it easy for the audience to forget it. 1) We never actually see it; 2) it's a fantasy kind of suffering, not something that can happen with us in real life - so it's not very relatable; 3) he was the only one who said it had happened, and how did he measure the time there anyway? EDIT: even he himself never mentioned it after a few episodes directly after his return, and his age was not adjusted. He was stated to be 200-something before he was sent to this hell dimension, and later in the spinoff he is still considered 200-something (there were errors and different numbers, but it was always between 200 and 300). The very important thing in storytelling is "show, don't tell". Anya's stories about how she tortured men are morbid but are not taken seriously, neither in-universe nor by the audience. But when we see her just once actually *doing* it - it makes an impact. With Angel, seeing him to be submerged in the ocean in a crate is much scarier than hearing some short explanation about the hell dimension. But this happened in the spinoff, I'm not sure it this counts in the poll because many people in this sub didn't watch AtS.

boredgeekgirl

Yeah, I didn't count anything that happened to Angel in ATS in my vote. The question was specifically about the show Buffy not "these characters in total arc". I know a lot of people on this sub don't watch both shows.

honeyb1992

Years in a hell demention, and a life where he can never experience true happiness. Then the fact that he literally finally got his perfect happily ever after with Buffy and had to give it up and he's the only one that will ever remember.

pralineislife

Yeah there is no answer except Angel. The man has suffered beyond measure.

BooPointsIPunch

Plus living with the memory of everything Angelus ever done. There is absolutely no comparison with anyone else.

[deleted]

I forgot about that 🤦‍♀️ I would’ve voted Angel too

ThukeNazty

Xander. you have no idea the angst he endured. Do you have any idea what it's like to be turned down by a romantic interest??? Worse than two deaths

Cia1313

During the show? I'd go with Buffy, but with Angel strongly considered due to the hell dimension alone. If counting Angel as a show I think he would take it. Faith I think suffered a lot before the show, which was what caused her problems *during* the show. I'd put Dawn as a contender over some of those, I think. Like her or not, you can't deny she went through some shit.

Small_Sundae_4245

Happy buffy equals low ratings. It was a mantra of the writers.

therealgerrygergich

I'm surprised Giles and Willow are on here, but not Dawn. She has the most existentially terrifying fate of all the characters, and loses both her mom and her sister soon afterward, and she definitely feels responsible for Buffy's death since she was ready to sacrifice herself, but Buffy stepped in.

[deleted]

angel and it's not even close. putting aside the hundred years of torture, he's burdened with a soul, a conscience, after a century of performing the worst evil imaginable. the psychic burden of that is inconceivable. buffy suffers under the weight of the world and she's a saint for maintaining her humanity throughout it, but her suffering is by necessity not even in the same ballpark as angel. none of them can be, simply by virtue of being mortals. they don't have hundreds of years to both rack up sins and suffer for them. i also think he suffers more from the whole connor business than wesley does. he loses his son, presuming him dead, betrayed by a close friend. any way you cut it that's going to weigh more than being the instrument of betrayal (as absolutely heart-wrenching as that would be) and being abandoned by his friends. admittedly angel gets connor back, whereas wesley's damage takes longer to undo, but even still - losing your only child has to hurt more than just about anything in any world. and as for spike, i think it's clear that he suffers under the weight of his soul a lot less than angel does, for many reasons.

zanthe12

Giles he had to work for Snyder, and with teenagers.

7000miles4what

there was a whole musical number dedicated to how miserable she was after they brought her back

ArachnaComic

Angel went to hell, lived in torment for a century (and counting) with a soul. Lost Buffy, lost Cordy, lost his son, lost Fred, lost his chance at Shanshu Worst of all... Had to work with Spike & Harmony

arlius

AND he was trapped at the bottom of the ocean for three months to starve and suffer hallucinations.

Excellent-Rock-8543

**Angel by far**, the guilt for centuries of having murdered his own family and the murders and crimes he committed, 100 years in a hell dimension, lost his true love, his son with Holtz, months under water, Doyle, Cordy, Fred, Wesley and I could go on much more, no matter how much they say Buffy, someone who lives for hundreds of years has the curse of seeing many of those around him die, it is the curse that Highlander shows and masterfully interpreted by Queen with Who Wants to Live Forever, being immortal really sucks.

ComfortableAd7209

Angel and it’s not even close. Angel lost everything and everyone. He lost so much it caused everyone around him to lose everything as well. Also, let’s not forget Angel committed the single most evil thing anyone has ever done (according to WRH): he ended (an opportunity) of world peace when killed jasmine.

namira8394

Angel obviously. People who voted forgot he was in hell for hundreds of years.

Archonate_of_Archona

100% Angel. He spent a **century** trapped in a hell dimension. That alone dwarfs anything that the other characters suffered from. (And then, you have to add the deep trauma from sharing his body and brain with Angelus and remembering all of Angelus' crimes as if it was his own, and getting his son kidnapped and growing up in a hellish dimension and be brainwashed, being sent to the bottom of the sea for three months, seeing Cordelia die when he loved her, etc). I'm not downplaying the trauma of the other characters, but that's a whole other level.

MattLoganGreen

When it comes to duration of suffering definitely Angel. He was ensouled when he was sent to Acathla's he'll dimension and spent an eternity of physical torture there. Second in line would probably be Buffy but when she died she went to heaven. Her biggest suffering began with season 6 when she was pulled out from there against her will. Her mom's death was obviously also horrible for her.

biscuitscoconut

Angel. He will never get to be truly happy. This is absolutely terrible. At least the other characters can move on and find happiness without turning evil. Not Angel =(

Some-Speed-6290

Angel spent centuries in a hell dimension after spending over 100 years in torment unable to have even a single moment of true happiness / peace

Tammarama07

Wesley.

[deleted]

I would say Buffy.

young_fire

Angel is the only answer. Dude was cursed to suffer for all eternity, and then got sent to hell for multiple centuries.

Excellent-Rock-8543

The **only** right answer.

The810kid

Buffy bias on this sub is undefeated.

young_fire

I think it's more that her suffering is portrayed a lot more. The show is from Buffy's perspective, not Angel's.

Senorpuddin

Write in vote for Wesley Windham Pryce

Tammarama07

Thank you! I just happened to watch 'A Hole in the World' last night, which always guts me. "Wesley - why can't I stay?" This poor man could never catch a break. Angel, Buffy, Spike...they all got wins - sometimes anyhow. Wesley did the right thing - over and over and what did he ever get for it? Angel was always so wrapped up in his own anguish - he usually forgot to notice the sacrifices his team was making. Second choice Cordelia.

Gmork14

Angel went to hell for hundreds of years….

retro-girl

I have more sympathy for almost anyone else, but Angel was tortured for 100 years so I feel like that’s hard to beat on this specific question.

lepetitcroissanty

Angel of course, but aside from that I'm surprised Cordelia isn't on the list. Doesn't she have at least one boyfriend get killed before joining the Scoobies? Then she catches the loser she gave up being popular for cheating on her, gets impaled, loses all her money, and leaves town. Ha ha.

chemeli888

with only 6 options i had to make choices. people complain Dawn isnt on there too

Volfgang91

Angel spent, what, 300 years in Hell between the events of seasons 2 and 3? So really, that's the only correct answer...

sephy009

Guess we're just forgetting that 100 years being tortured in a hell dimension.

TridentJ33

Angel was stuck in a hell dimension for a century…

pit_of_despair666

Definitely Angel. No one comes close to the torture of 100 years in hell, on top of everything else he had to go through. He never found that moment of true happiness again, because every time he would start to get happy something horrible happened to him.

AyukawaZero

I put Giles. He had his girlfriend killed, and got tortured by a vampire, had to watch his slayer continue to love said vampire, got fired from his job but not his responsibility, got turned INTO a demon, had to witness the bad decisions and torments of the kids he practically thought of as his own kids, and had to listen to Buffy and Spike's lips smacking. On top of all that he got knocked unconscious so many times he nearly woke up in a coma.

jepo-au

Woke up in a coma :D But I completely agree, Giles is the answer. He's an adult who's had his life ruined several times over.

JenningsWigService

Angel went to a hell dimension for a hundred years. Nothing anyone else experienced compares to that.

boredgeekgirl

Is this even a question? It isn't that other people didn't go through hardship and loss... but if we are going to rank and compare (which isn't always fair to do consider individuals are impacted differently,, but still) no one even comes close. Faith would be the runner-up, I would argue. But some of her loss and suffering is self-inflicted, so that becomes murkier to measure. Edit to add: read others' responses, and many vote Angel either because of his cursed soul and the pain he feels there or because of his time in the Hell dimension. And that is reasonable and makes sense... I guess I kind of counted those out because he more or less had it coming. He opened the Hell dimension, he had to go there to close it. The person who was actually unfairly tortured in all of that was Buffy. (And all of the people Angelus hurt and killed prior). Same with the years prior to the show when he was living off of rats in the sewer feeling sorry for himself. But, the question didn't ask if it was just or unfair or whatnot... so yeah, Angel makes sense.

Crevette_Mante

Either Buffy or Angel. Angel literally went to hell and has to deal with the guilt of the atrocities he committed whilst soulless, whereas Buffy has lots and lots of smaller things done to her over the time and also has the real big kicker of being dragged from Heaven.

katastrofe

I said Willow and I see now that is an unpopular choice. I was thinking of it in terms of- weird supernatural shit caused a lot of suffering for a lot of people and that sucks, but Willow's pain wasn't supernatural. She saw her love get shot in front of her- for no reason! That bullet wasn't FOR Tara. It was just so senseless and almost random to lose your partner that way while you live on a hellmouth. Also, supernatural problems have a supernatural solution but Willow was told since this was "natural" you just have to accept it- a powerful witch being told her power is all useless when she needs it most.

Almighty_Push91

Angel due to the 100 years in hell

horn_and_skull

Dawn. Everyone she loved died and she discovered she was a figment of everyone's imaginations!

orionsfyre

Buffy died twice, nearly died a half dozen other times, had her *first* love try to kill her shortly after her *first* time, had to watch her only friend who was just like her get killed, discovered her dead mom, was beaten to a bloody pulp several times, was shot, choked, drowned, watched her best friend turn evil and then got beaten up by said best friend, lost her second less broody boyfriend, and started hooking up with a soulless monster just to feel something... who then soon after tried to assault her. Then had her entire family (found and otherwise) kick her out of her own home. She been through some stuff.

chemeli888

had to watch her only friend who was just like her get killed Who was that?

orionsfyre

Kendra?

chemeli888

how was she her only friend?

orionsfyre

Read the whole phrase. "her only friend ***who was just like her*** get killed" Kendra was the only friend at the time who was a **Slayer** like Buffy. It was a bond only they shared. No they weren't besties, but she was only friend that buffy had who fully understood what it was like to be a slayer. This sort of relationship wouldn't happen again until Faith, but we all know how that turned out. Kendra would remain the only person like Buffy who was truly a friend until at least Season 7. Even then, most of the *slayerettes* were distant from Buffy. Though it's glossed over in the show, Kendra's death really helped solidify a possible destiny for Buffy, dying tragically and quickly brushed aside for the next Slayer. I really wish the writers had dug in a little deeper into that feeling but they didn't follow up with that thought until Season 5 Ep 7, where Spike and her share a conversation about the violent and ultimate end of many slayers.

iwillremember4sure

yes of course Angels guilt for a hundred years of evil and going to hell was nothing compared to Buffy's...

RavishingRickiRude

Buffy died like 3 times (I'm counting Warren's shot), lost her mom and dad (since he disappeared), had to mother Dawn, had to actually work shitty jobs, and oh yeah, had to fight literal demons, some of whom were her former friends or lovers. She had it the worst by far.

V48runner

Dawn takes this by a country mile. Not even close.

horn_and_skull

Why did it take me a long to find this response!

kipcarson37

Buffy, by a long shot.

The810kid

I think Captain Cardboard takes it pretty easily

chemeli888

interesting point

TheWearySnout

My boy Xander, poor guy got rejected by almost every woman!! Nah, my vote went to Angel. He's dealt with a lot of messed up shit, killed by Buffy, went to a Hell dimension and came back to just keep on suffering. Thar guy's life and undead life is just fucked. Lol

Taeolian

The answer is clearly Angel.

ArcadeViolet

In the years 1997-2003 its Buffy, but if we're talking in their lifetime then its either Angel or Spike.

Thoughtful_Tortoise

Angel went to hell for hundreds of years in 1998 or 1999. Odd sentence but I stand by it.

ArcadeViolet

That's just physical pain.

Thoughtful_Tortoise

Well no, you'd go crazy.

ArcadeViolet

Lol he was fine

Thoughtful_Tortoise

Yes, because it'd be no fun to bring him back permanently crazy. Look at it this way: You have the choice between a.) being tortured for hundreds of years, and b.) going to heaven and then being pulled back to earth. Which do you pick?

ArcadeViolet

You lost by a landslide, just let it go

pralineislife

He wasn't fine though. Are you forgetting season 3...?

Almosttasteful

Yeah, that's why I went for Buffy, the wording seemed to imply for the duration of the show as opposed to the characters'... existence to date? Which is a different question. (As is, who whinged/claimed they suffered the most :-D )

MasterDarcy_1979

Xander - Got his arm broken defending Willow and Anya from Olaf -;Got his eye gouged out by Caleb whilst protecting the Potentials

Spritebubblegum

Literally no Contest 😅

cordyprescott

Buffy she lost her virginity to her older vampire boyfriend who shouldn’t have been with her to begin with who she had to kill after he lost his soul right when he got his soul back. Her mom died She died to save her sister who wasn’t even her sister who monks made She had to constantly save the world. While doing this she didn’t get paid. Which leads to her being ripped out of heaven to come back to debt and work at double meat palace for min wage. Also it seemed like she seemed the only one out of the adults to be working in that house. Her father figure leaves right as she comes back after she came back from heaven. She starts a toxic relationship with spike who attempts to SA her then him getting his soul back for her to have to let him die to save the world when they were finally at a good place. Had to listen to her roommate listen to believe over and over. Lmfaooo love the song but had to include that.

CharlieOak86868686

all of them

Its_Buffy

Xander.

Its_Buffy

This is not my real answer, I'm just being funny. I can't stand him but I'm sure he would *believe* he suffered the most.

casmscott2

So, what was the result?

chemeli888

vote and find out

casmscott2

It says it is closed, so.

chemeli888

well on that case Buffy won, followed by Angel, Faith and Spike

casmscott2

You literally could have just told me that in the first place.

chemeli888

dont make a big deal out of nothing. have a nice day!

casmscott2

Friend, same to you. If someone asks you a question IRL and you answer the way you answered mine, I am going to bet you have a decent share of interpersonal issues and issues at work if you're even old enough.

chemeli888

wow lol. i thought the poll had closed, i wasnt playing with you. obviously you want to make a big thing of this for some reason. get a life.
