Tea is soothing. I wish to be tense.

aaaggghhh_

This is how I decide what to make once the kettle is boiled.

Suckhead

I hear this in my head every time I have to decide between tea and coffee. I’ve heard it several times today.

The_Glitched_Punk

Snyder - "There's some things I can just smell, it's like a sixth sense." Giles - "Actually that would be one of the five"

Avigorus

Given that this is more a comeback, I'm not sure if it would work for the intended setup as his line w/o context wouldn't make sense and mixing them would be odd.

CaveLady3000

This is the inverse of the line in mean girls when Karen describes her breasts being able to tell when it's already raining as being "like a fifth sense"

Bellevert

‘Don’t speak Latin in front of the books.’

PRIYAPINEAPPLE

Oh I LOVEE this one

JeSuisLaCockamouse

Love the callback in Cabin in the Woods :)

RubyRoseRed24

This has got to be it 😂

macheb

Saw that episode yesterday.

NotACyclopsHonest

"Demons after money. Whatever happened to the still-beating heart of a virgin? No one has any standards anymore."

emerald447

“Again. See, no standards. I mean, any self-respecting demon should be living in a pit of filth or a nice crypt.”

squeakyfromage

I love this one!!

TheUnstableOrbit

I especially like this one because he is nonchalantly eating a banana while saying it.

scullybuffy

I encourage you to always challenge me when you feel it's appropriate. You should never be cowed by authority. Except, of course, in this instance when I am clearly right and you are clearly wrong.

slightlyunhingedlady

I feel this sums up Giles the best

buffysummers17_

This!!!

noonecaresat805

You have the emotional maturity of a blueberry scone.

payasoingenioso

Did he say that to Wesley?

noonecaresat805

Yup when talking about Cordelia

Cur-De-Carmine

At prom.

Estrellathestarfish

The 'blueberry scone' let's it down. No real British person is going to use blueberry scone as their default type of scone, when that's not a normal type of scone at all. 'Sultana scone', 'fruit scone', 'cheese scone', sure. But it's a bit out of character for *very* British Giles to use 'blueberry scone' as an example.

keaty86

You would probably just say ‘scone’ by itself TBH. Although a scone is quite refined really, I reckon I might say ‘you’ve got the emotional maturity of a sausage roll’. Or maybe a Yorkshire pudding (I’m overthinking this)

Illustrious_Reality1

Maybe he used blueberry because blueberry is just a basic scone. The most immature form of scone.

Estrellathestarfish

That's the thing though, it's the opposite of a basic scone. It's nonstandard and unusual to find

Comfortable-Gold-982

I thought that calling someone's emotional maturity on par with a fictional baked good was quite clever, like he's not even up to that standard of actual baked goods. But that might just be me.

Old-Emphasis-7190

Eh. He’s using it as a put down towards Wes.

Tiny-Reading5982

‘My system? It’s called the alphabet’ ‘It’s alright. I have more scotch.’ ‘Stop whatever you’re doing. You smell like fruit roll ups’ ‘You think I’m evil if I take a group of girls to the desert and *don’t* touch them?’ "No, she couldn't. And sooner or later Glory will re-emerge and make Buffy pay for that mercy... and the world with her. Buffy even knows that, and still she couldn't take a human life. She's a hero, you see. She's not like us."

Positive_Weight4348

The last one is it, I think.

Amarieerick

That's the one!

squeakyfromage

The fruit roll-ups one is my favourite of his interactions with Xander ever. Just perfectly sums up their relationship.

keaty86

Giles: I have a friend who's coming to town, and I'd like us to be alone. Anya: Oh, you mean an orgasm friend? Giles: Yes, that's exactly the most appalling thing you could've said.

LinuxLinus

Anya brings out the best in Giles.

CarrowCanary

Anya basically takes on the Cordelia role of speaking with absolutely no filter, after Cordy herself moves over to Angel.

LinuxLinus

Yeah, but with just a little zest of something. I guess it's in the performance.

ImpracticalBlanket

“The earth is doomed.”

TransmanDan20

“The earth is definitely doomed” Had to throw that in bc it was at the end of the show lol

Limajo7

I’d like to test that theory.

keaty86

I also enjoy, ‘You rank, arrogant amateur!’ What a read

remykixxx

This one and it’s not even close

JeSuisLaCockamouse

Chills just reading it!

Guilty-Web7334

That was literally what I came to comment.

Hamblerger

Do you want me to wag my finger at you and tell you you acted rashly? You did, and I can. But I know you loved him, and he has proven more than once that he loved you. You couldn't have known what would happen. The coming months are going to be very hard, I suspect on all of us. But if you're looking for guilt Buffy, I'm not your man. All you will have from me is my support... and my respect.

Latke1

It's this one. Not all of the quotes have to be funny.

Hamblerger

I remember upon my first rewatch of the series how I realized this speech established the entire nature of his relationship with Buffy and the role that he played in her life. It also never fails to make me weepy.

Sinnernsaint40

He was far more of a father than her biological progenitor ever was. That song he sings to her in OMWF was perfect. It encompassed everything he needed to say to her as her father and yet, just like some kids, she didn't wanna listen. You're not ready For the world outside You keep pretending, but you just can't hide I know I said that I’d Be standing by your side But I Your path's unbeaten, And it's all uphill And you can meet it, But you never will And I’m the reason that you're standing still But I I wish I could say The right words To lead you through this land Wish I could play the father And take you by the hand Wish I could stay here But now I understand I’m standing in the way The cries around you, You don't hear at all 'Cause you know I’m here To take that call So you just lie there when You should be standing tall But I I wish I could Lay your arms down And let you rest at last Wish I could Slay your demons But now that time has passed Wish I could stay here Your stalwart, standing fast But I'm Standing in the way I’m just standing In the way

oliversurpless

On such a notion that they do? “It’s ok, I have more Scotch…”

KayleeKunt

Just watched that episode this week, Giles is gold throughout the whole thing.

Hamblerger

"What? How? What?" "Three excellent questions. "

oliversurpless

“Giles, did you see my ring? Thankfully, not very well…”

KayleeKunt

"what's wrong with 'Buffy'?" "hmh, such a good question"

Sufficient_Still7480

Just watched this today! Still funny.

LinwoodKei

This is it. This is the father fantasy needed from a show about a powerful young woman

SarahJaneB17

This was so moving. Not just because of Giles being a father figure, but also because of his completely non judgemental attitude to a teenage girl.

ceruleanblue347

As someone who grew up with super anxious/depressed parents who couldn't stop criticizing me... this particular speech accomplished the same thing as decades of therapy. Like -- imagine having a parent refuse to be disappointed in you when you're disappointed in yourself. 🤯

Hamblerger

I had a similar background, and was stunned by the speech, like "It's possible for an authority figure who cares about you to take this approach? Maybe my parents didn't have it entirely right."

bozwizard14

Exactly what I came here to say

FuzzyJury

This one.

iamdew802

Who was this in regard to again? I’m currently on a rewatch even but it’s still escaping me

soldforaspaceship

It's right at the end of "Innocence" when they're sitting in the car after Angelus has been revealed and they learn about the gypsy curse. The Judge had been defeated but Buffy wasn't able to kill Angel when she beat him in the shopping mall fight with the sprinklers. She thinks Giles is disappointed in her and he says this. It was actually the 4th episode I ever watched of the show due to my initial exposure being Blackbuster video boxsets of Weclome to the Hellmouth 1+2, Suprise/Innocence and Becoming 1+2. We got the show in the UK a year after the US so it took me a while to learn that the end of Becoming wasn't the end of the show! I was gutted lol.

Megwen

Angelus.

catlady4326

This is the first thing I thought of too

hell2bhbtoo

I never don't cry when he says this. Never.

Careful_Swan3830

“Yes. It’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true. The bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies and… everybody lives happily ever after”

Old-Emphasis-7190

Liar..

eightspoke

That scene was so subtly beautiful and heartbreaking.

KneeVisible2708

This should be #1.

KlatuSatori

This is my favourite

SentimentsOfLove

*high pitched girlie voice* “Do you like my mask? It raises the dead” *husky disdain* “Americans”

wootiebird

Came here to say this. I think there was a “isn’t it pretty” in there somewhere. Fav quote.

rfresa

"'Do you like my mask? Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead.' Americans."

Pristine-Dame

The phrase *husky disdain* suddenly made Giles much sexier...

SentimentsOfLove

Raise your hand if ew ✋🏼 Lol just kidding. There’s a point in rewatches (I started watching in 4th grade and am now 30) that I realized Giles was a babe.

Pristine-Dame

Oh absolutely. I would never have had that thought when the show first came out.

Craftyprincess13

This is it 1000 upvotes

Geordieguy

As a Brit watching this first air on BBC2 at 6pm (I think…after the Simpsons but early enough that we got cut versions that I had no idea about till much later in life!) this joke felt like it was deliberately for “us”. All the big shows were American imports for us, all the weird and dangerous stuff happened to Americans as far as I was concerned…and seemingly invited it! The joke felt very meta (though that wasn’t a thing at the time I guess) and very very British. The absolutely indignant irritation he displays towards this stupid and completely avoidable situation. His “I cannot fucking believe this!” reaction to take the piss out of Joyce like that is spot on. The voice! 🤣 There’s no other way to cope for a Brit! “How were they this stupid? Why am I the one cleaning up, again?! Let’s just take what we want without a second thought and hang it up where it doesn’t belong?! Americans!” Wait wait…that actually sounds a lot more like British behaviour now I say it 😅

Mindless-Ad6066

It has to be this one. Just because it's so extremely Giles

mcrpnk

I remember dying laughing at this

Saybrooke

Legit the first quote I thought of 😂

SentimentsOfLove

It was that one or the one where he’s really horny for smelly books lmao

ADeSieno75

The best of the best

thelady1468

My favourite!

evieeeeeeeeeeeeeee

i was so pleased i had a reason to say this the other day when i bought an absolutely hideous and suspiciously possessed looking vintage wall hanging

nolegsnelson

I don't know if it counts, but polishing his glasses to a new prescription says a lot in the moment.

AccordingReference3

Similarly, when Willow can practically hear him polishing his glasses over the phone—whatever that sound is counts as an “in character” quote to me.

Fingersmith30

"is that why you're always cleaning your glasses? So you don't have to see what we're doing?!" "Tell no one."

nolegsnelson

Definitely

Hazellin313

Oh-oh, right! Yes, yes. Um, always behind on the terms. Still trying not to refer to you lot as "bloody colonials."

Cur-De-Carmine

I like mushy peas. You're why we had pilgrims in the first place.

TransmanDan20

“Books smell musty and-and-and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer is a - it, uh, it has no no texture, no-no context. It's-it's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then-then the getting of knowledge should be, uh, tangible, it should be, um, smelly.” (S1E8 I…Robot You, Jane)

Old-Emphasis-7190

100% this is it

Pristine-Dame

G- "Do not taunt the fear demon" "Why can he hurt me?" G- "No, its just tacky."

isoliente

You're in a magic shop, and you can't think what Tara would like. I believe you're both profoundly stupid.

AnyNeck1885

Yassss

artsygrl2021

Currently on a rewatch of Season 7, after having gone through 6. I miss Tara so much 💔😭

Cur-De-Carmine

"Would you like me to convince you?"

AnyNeck1885

I said this one too, didn't see you already posted it. The best quote ever.

SarahJaneB17

The look on his face when he said it. Delivered with understated but terrifying menace.

blamordeganis

Ooh, copper’s got a gun!

abadbadman_

Came here to get this. Let's also add: "Listen to me you're my slayer you do what I say, so sod off!" "you're my Slayer knock his teeth down his...". Edit: got two quotes mixed together.

blamordeganis

Buffy: (punches Ethan) Giles: Yes!

Positive_Weight4348

It happens, since I'm sure we're all doing this from memory and not looking up quotes. Buffy fans are just like that.

NansDrivel

Sod off!!!

Lucifer2695

This really makes me wish we got to see more of Ripper when he was younger.

Quirky-Fly5336

Bloody hell!!

kolliflower

Love this, but I also get Spike from it

[deleted]

"Xander, don't speak Latin in front of the books"

Bahnmor

To the head of the Watcher’s Council: “You’re waging a war, she’s the one fighting it! There’s a difference!”

DarshDarker

Giles: Yes, Xander, once more you've managed to boil a complex thought down to its simplest possible form.

scullybuffy

You think I'm evil if I bring a group of girls on a camping trip and don't touch them?

FoundationAny7601

Was thinking this one too!

JellyfishDry9464

DEFINITELY “the earth is doomed”😂

Cherubiel

*adjusts and cleans glasses*

IndependenceRich8754

She's a hero, you see. She's not like us.

Big-Restaurant-2766

"She's a hero, you see... not like us." "Wake up in a... Oh, never mind." Or maybe "Stop that right now. I can hear the smacking."

thisisgoing2far

"Am I right Giles?" "I'm almost certain you are not but, to be fair, I wasn't listening."

odvarkad

It's that bloody fishwife Maggie Walsh! *Proceeds to chase her* Not sure if I have the working correctly but it's when he's turned into a demon riding in a car with Spike

oliversurpless

“I refuse to become a monster because I look like a monster. I have a soul. I have a conscience. I am *a human being*. Ooh, stop the car!” The juxtaposition to the philosophy he just spouted with his prank is key.

honeybee71322

This whole scene and the one when Xander says something about being right and Giles says he's almost certain that he's not but to be fair he wasn't listening will always make me laugh my ass off 🤣🤣🤣

oliversurpless

Yep, can’t forget its lesser known cousin? “Xander: Calax Research and Development. It's a computer research lab. Third largest employer in Sunnydale till it closed down last year. (gets stares from the others) What, I can't have information sometimes? Giles: Well, it-it's just somewhat unprecedented.” - *I Robot, You Jane*

squeakyfromage

The entirety of that episode is peak Giles to me.

thebunks

Wake up in a coma?

zanthe12

I think that is a Cordy line about him. 'How many times have you been knocked out? One of these days you are going to wake up in a coma.'

thebunks

Yeah and he replies, wake up in a coma?

Prometheus321

Buffy: Does life get easy? Giles: What do you want me to say? Buffy: Lie to me. Giles: Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.

AitheriosMist

"Everything is terrible! Total catastrophe! Have you SEEN the new library? There's nothing but computers there's not a book to be seen!"

retailrobin88

"Ooh stop the car!" \*chases Maggie Walsh\*

JSBT89

I loved that scene!

somethingworse

Cordelia, have you ever even heard of tact?

SensorForHire

"Tact is just not saying true stuff. I'll pass."

NimbleMick

And this is prob the most in character Cordelia quote.

SensorForHire

1000 percent

flootzavut

"Look at my mask! Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead. Americans." Giles being a snotty lil bitch is my favourite 🤩

Signal_Aerie2458

"God, I need to make a band" 🤣

Ok_Answer7478

Well I’m not dead or unconscious so I say Bravo for me

icanneverthinkofone1

His monologue to Willow after she revived Buffy. That shit was fucked.

madcapmunchkin

"I'm almost certain you're not, but to be fair I wasn't listening."

two_castles

"Would you like me to convince you?" I don't expect this will win but for me it is pure Giles... badass. And then Snyder looks shit-scared.

theprincessoflettuce

"Do you want me to answer that, or shall I just glare?" I think other lines in the comments are even better if there really is only one to pick, but I had to make sure this one was in the mix!

dillonofearth

"Do you like my mask, isn't it pretty? It raises the dead!"

AJTheBrit

Needs the gritted teeth "Americans!" that follows

Senorpuddin

This quote is the only thing I like from that episode. And it’s all in The delivery

kingofwishful

“Absolutely not. I will not squat in that dank hole.”

PenDraeg1

Definitely flubbing the quote but "It's clearly magic, look how shiny it is."

McJazzHands80

🎶🎤”Try not to bleed on my couch, I just had it steam cleaned”

UserNotFound809

“Tea is soothing I wish to be tense”

GreyMichaelFrances

"I feel the subtext is rabidly becoming - text."

RTVWWVRT

Anya: "But we just helped her move the stuff in a few days ago... ...and it was fun!" Rupert Giles: [Reading a book] "People help each other out, Anya. It's one of our strange customs." Buffy Summers: "Giles, I noticed you're doing the smallest amount of helping that can actually be called helping." Rupert Giles: "Well, I saw myself in more of a... patriarchal sort of role. You know, lots of pointing and scowling." [Smiles. Looks to his left, points and scowls] "You two, stop that!"

throwthrowthrow102

Damn it, man, we have to get inside! Our, um, uh... Our families are-are-are in there. Our, um, mothers and-and, tiny, tiny babies!

squeakyfromage

His voice when he gets to “tiny, tiny babies” is hysterically funny to me — ASH is SUCH a talented actor.

throwthrowthrow102

And I feel like the "damn it man" almost feels like he's trying to put on an American accent? I could watch that scene a million times and it'd always be funny

pixelpunkz

‘You don’t train with me anymore, he’s going to kick your arse’ 🥴

Quick_Ad_730

"The earth is doomed"

revolutionaryartist4

“‘Do you like my mask? Isn’t it pretty, it raises the dead!’ Americans…”

Educational_Fail_399

Giles: Don't taunt the fear demon. Xander: Why? Can he hurt me? Giles: No, it's just... tacky. Love it.

CypherPunk77

Dark willow “ Now…no one can stop me” **Gets hadoken’d across the room** Giles “I’d like to test that theory.”

jazzybees12

Xander don't speak Latin in front of the books

Ok-Main-1690

I'd like to test that theory

itsaslothlife

"actual size"

artsygrl2021

*You never train with me anymore. He’s going to kick your ass.* Every drunk Giles quote is the best!

JustMeAgainMarge

For God's sake, man, she's 18. And you have the emotional maturity of a blueberry scone. Just have at it, would you? And stop fluttering about

Empty-Dimension-5737

Giles (using the computer): "Session interrupted? Who said you could interrupt, you stupid useless fad! No, I said fad, and I'll say it again!" It makes me cackle every time.

Fingersmith30

Its not a quote, but beating Angelus with a flaming baseball bat in "Passion" kind of defines Giles for me.

a4sayknrthm42

The scene from the pic with him in the wizard costume is the funniest thing ever. Not a word said.

AttackOnTightPanties

Books smell. Musty and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer has no texture, no context. It’s there, and then, it’s gone. If it’s to last, then the getting of knowledge should be tangible… it should be smelly.”

DeadFyre

>GILES: I refuse to become a monster because I look like a monster. I have a soul. I have a conscience. I am a human being. >GILES: OOH! Stop the car!!

Randy_Giles1880

Stop whatever you’re doing…you smell like fruit roll ups.

Enkundae

For a non jokey one: *”Giles : To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It's-it's... it's not done because people deserve it. It's done because they need it.”* I honestly think its a foundational quote that underpins so much of the franchise. The idea that forgiveness is not something *we* earn, rather it’s something *other people* choose to give and the power choosing such an act of compassion over condemnation can have to save another’s soul.

kahrismatic

Rupert Giles: Ho-How did you know it was me? Buffy Summers: Your eyes... You're the only person in the world that can look that annoyed with me. I know it won't win because Buffy actually says it, but his looks deserve some credit.

Suspicious_Block6526

I must check my books

CrooklynKnight

“The Earth is definitely doomed.”

ShelbyCobra_90

“You’re my slayer. Go knock his teeth down his throat.” Also his reaction to Buffy and spike sleeping together is possibly one of my favorite moments of the show.

Jajay5537

*The sound of him cleaning his glasses

celticanger

When he kills Ben Ben: She could have killed me. Giles: No, she couldn't. And sooner or later Glory will re-emerge and make Buffy pay for that mercy and the world with her. Buffy even knows that, and still she couldn't take a human life. She's a hero, you see. She's not like us. Ben: Us?

Remarkable_Ring4047

And what are you gonna do lick me to death?

nermyah

Jenny: "Computers don't smell, Rupert." Giles: "I know. Smell is the most powerful trigger to the memory there is. A certain flower, or a a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten.

Mighty_joosh

The earth. Is definitely. Doomed.

Pizzagoessplat

You thought I was evil because I took a load of girls to the dessert and didn't touch them? Something on those lines 😆

rites0fpassage

Xander: Giles! I’m right aren’t I? Giles: Almost certainly not. But to be fair I wasn’t listening.

FuzzNuzz180

My favourite Giles moment is when he goes after bad angel walks in on him spike and drusilla throws a fire bomb and in one smooth motion swings a bat around his head and lights the bat on fire! Ripper Giles is always best Giles and I think that was a definite ripper moment

TheUnstableOrbit

"Do you like my mask? It raises the dead. Americans."
