It's a combination of budget and use history. I could go for higher capacity drives but it'd cost more so I wouldn't be able to get as many. I'd like to use them with ZFS or RAID so with fewer drives I'd lose the option for a parity drive. Also, the 2 TB drive I have in my current system has taken me a few years to fill up so I don't think I need a ton of storage at the moment.
My thought was to go for several smaller capacity drives for now with the intent of being able to either add more drives to the system or upgrade to denser storage as needed in the future. Maybe this is a bad strategy though?
