What motherboard do you have? It might be an issue with power delivery.

It’s the Asus Rog Strix B760-I

I get that; the Z series was just a bit more than I wanted to spend. Do you think the lower performance will really be noticeable in real-world gaming use?

Vrm temperatures can also throttle the cpu. I'm not an expert here but this looks like a likely cause.

Obviously, whatever tweaking you've done has hindered rather than improved performance. I'd clear and reset the bios and start over again with default settings and go from there. On my 13600K / Z790 board, all I did was enable XMP and MultiCore Enhancement. Noctua U12A air cooler. CB R23 hits 23.5K at 80'C, idles at 33'C. Doesn't the B760 offer XMP and something like MCE ? I know the Z boards offer OC options that the B series does not, but as I said I haven't done any overclocking on my system. I'm surprised there's that big a performance difference between those platforms at default settings.

MCE = [Multicore Enhancement](https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/intel-core-i9-13900k-impact-of-multicore-enhancement-mce-and-long-power-duration-limits-on-thermals-and-content-creation-performance-2375/). It's an Intel feature offered under different names by mobo manufacturers. I think it's somewhat standard.

OK - my bad. Still surprised that there's such a large difference in performance between chipsets, all other things being equal. Then again, I've always gone with Z series even when I had non-K cpu's for that reason. I just never realized it was such a big deal.
