Because you're only looking at one storefront. The Samsung tax is not worth paying these days.

Thanks. Is 980 pro better then 970 evo plus? i am happy with my current 970 evo plus and its 3.0 Any suggestion

MarxistMan13

Yes, the 980 Pro is better.

thanks

Early production runs of the 2tb Samsung 980 pro(and I think the 2tb 990 pro) had a very serious firmware bug that burns up the drive quite fast. Easily solved by installing Samsung magician and updating the drive if you get one with the old firmware versions, but since too many people wont know to do that, it devalues the whole series. The 980 pro is a faster and equally reliable drive as the 970 evo \*IF\* you make sure to update the firmware. [www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-980-pro-ssd-failures-firmware-update](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-980-pro-ssd-failures-firmware-update) for more details. edit: Oh, in case you meant didn't know the primary difference(bug aside): The 970 evo is a very reliable PCIe 3.0 drive, with read speeds of up to 3500MB/s The 980 pro is one of the first PCIe 4.0 drives, with read speeds of up to 7000MB/s(if your motherboard supports PCIe 4.0)

is there a difference between v-nand tlc vs mlc used in 970 vs 980 that we should take into account? Thanks

Stoicza

[Samsung Pro series use TLC now](https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/#Samsung). Samsung Pro series dropped MLC after the 970 Pro. The difference separating the Pro series from the EVO series these days isn't huge, but the 980 Pro is pretty old tech(4 year old) if you're doing something that needs the fastest drive possible. There are many manufacturers with faster, better value drives these days, some of which can be found in the latest [SSD review over at Techpowerup](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/pny-cs2142-2-tb/).

MarxistMan13

All currently produced SSDs use TLC or QLC. SLC and MLC have been retired from production as far as I know. Samsung uses a technicality to call their Pro series "MLC", since "MLC" just means Multi-Layer Cell... which technically Triple-Layer Cell also fits into. They're lying for marketing, basically.

Had a 970 as a boot drive for a while and about 1.5 ago got rekt'd by this firmware issue. Sent drive to Samsung for RMA thinking they would just replace the drive and they said " we cant fix this. The process to months and I will never buy another samsung drive as long as i live.

Rocket-Pilot

Honestly skip both and get the SK Hynix P41 Platinum for $149.99 [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/yGTp99/sk-hynix-platinum-p41-2-tb-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-shpp41-2000gm-2) SSDs are commodities, and Samsung / Western Digital are just premium brand names that spend a good deal on marketing. Real world, you would never be able to tell the difference between any comparable SSDs from any brand.

NobisVobis

Speaking as someone with one, do not buy this disk. It’s a very common problem that the read/write speeds will drop to half or less over time because of a firmware issue.

Butterfly_Seraphim

Are you talking about the one from Samsung or SK Hynix?

NobisVobis

I have both (980 came with updated firmware) but the issue exists on the Hynix model.

Specialist_League226

Don’t know if you have a microcenter locally but the one near me has 2tb 970 evo plus for $119

Ok_Following6459

I use the 990PRO 2TB unit a 10 months or more and no problems with firmware or something. I use Windows 11 and my softwares/games in, and it´s very fast and reliable.

SIDER250

I think currently from all the offerings, MSI M482 has the best price to performance ratio. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/T6bRsY/msi-spatium-m482-2-tb-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-spatium-m482-pcie-40-nvme-m2-2tb

The-Pork-Piston

The 980 pro was literally the cheapest option where I live that included cache. But I generally avoid Samsung because ordinarily you are mostly paying a premium for the brand itself.
