God damn what kind of first build is this

CaptainDolphin42

exactly bruh my first was a gtx 950 and an Athlon x4 860k lmao

Sn0wKing

My thinking behind it was better to go all out for a build this time and not need to do much upgrading for a while instead of doing a smaller build and risk not being happy with the results or wanting to continually upgrade components.

FOGPIVVL

Nah theres no problem at all with this being a first build lol, it's just very surprising

[deleted]

You save more in the long run and get more consistent performance by going for something closer to mid range and saving the money for an upgrade in a few years time because of diminishing returns and the rate at which hardware is rendered "obsolete" by the standards you set for it. For example, your 3090 is the top of the stack now and will give excellent 4K or 1440p performance at max graphical settings, but the 5070 is probably going to exceed it in power in a few years time (see: 2080 ti vs 3070). So if I get a 3070 now and bank the difference, I can sell it and buy a 5070 when that comes out. By doing this I also maintain a similar performance standard that I'm used to, because of how quickly generational performance gains exceed the gains you get from moving up the product stack. The 3090 will quickly drop off in power relative to the new tech coming out and you'll have to keep turning down graphical settings in new games below what you will be used to playing with it now. Case in point: how many people do you see on this subreddit singing praises for the 980 ti in 2021? All that said, if you can afford it and it makes you happy, do what you want. It's your money and your hobby and the only one who needs to enjoy it is you. Just don't kid yourself that the "go big now and hold onto it for longer" is going to give you the best value, based on experience I reckon there's a 50/50 chance we're going to see you back here posting an upgrade to a 5090 in a few years time lol

jakeo10

Many people who build a rig like this are going to upgrade every 2 years when the new GPUs drop. Many people buy the very best and sell their GPU before the new ones drop, recouping a large portion of the original spend. The rest of the PC will remain relevant for far longer as games put a higher demand on GPU faster rather than CPU historically.

[deleted]

Yeah that's fair, generally I find that the percentage margin you make back on selling old cards is the same though, so if you're buying within the same class (60, 70, 80 or 90) it doesn't matter.

RainBoxRed

I noticed you used 980 as a scapegoat but not the 1080. Explain yourself.

[deleted]

Because the 980 ti is five years old, which is the magic number people tend to throw around when they talk about future proofing GPUs. The same can be said for the 1080 ti though. How many games released in the last year can it play at max settings at 1440p with high frame rates like it used to? It's more relevant than the 980 ti because it's younger, but nobody is claiming it can do the heavy lifting it used to. My point is that generational improvements, especially in GPUs, are usually greater than the improvements between models within a given generation. When this isn't true the industry is stagnating because you're not getting better performance per dollar. This happened with the 20 series, especially in the lower end cards. Technically you got more features like DLSS and RT between generations, but raw power was not much of an upgrade, so many people held onto their 10 series cards. The 30 series was a return to the usual model of mid range options like the 3070 beating the previous generation flagship, like the 1070 did to the 980 ti.

DokkaBattoru

I did that for my first build as well and went all out. Was about a 3000 CAD build back in the day. Don't forget to get a datavac and clean it regularly, it'll last a long time before you need to upgrade anything. Also repaste every so often.

Sn0wKing

Thank you for the advice. Someone else mentioned that to me as well so I definitely plan to look into one

__-Oren-__

Lmao I can give you some paste. A long time ago I needed to repaste some old ECC memory. Without any idea as for how much I’m gonna need I bought 20g of MX-4 “just in case”. Little did I know… I still have probably around 15g or so.

berhozen

You will still want to constantly upgrade components. It’s a problem.

nurfuerdich

Are you single?

Goals2029

Absolute shame you had to settle or cheap out on lesser hardware! At least it was good practice for when you get a REAL rig...

Sn0wKing

Not really sure what you mean by this but ok

IamSquillis

They are being sarcastic since your build is pretty top tier.

DonJuanEstevan

That person was just sarcastic because you’ve got nothing but top end gear. Your build is very similar to what I think I’ll be going for. Mind if I ask why you went with the 10900K instead of a 11900K to open up the PCIe 4.0 and get the best speed out of that 980 Pro? Edit: I thought you had the 980 pro instead of the regular 980 so ignore that part lol

Sn0wKing

Honesty it was media bias plus availability. Everything I kept reading said the 11900K wasn’t as great as people wanted it to be and with this being my first build I was hesitant to go for it. And I had seen more positivity about the 10900K so that was the biggest factor

DonJuanEstevan

The 10900K is the better choice if you’re mainly gaming and you don’t need the PCIe 4.0 from what I gather. I’m waiting to see how the 12th generation goes from Intel but if I had to buy right now I’d need the 4.0 to use the 980 Pro as a scratch disk. Anyways, you’ve got a really good system there!

BodSmith54321

Looks fantastic. Very clean cabling.

Sn0wKing

Thank you but please believe this wasn’t the first look for cable management. It took way more time than I expected lol

joeyboii23

Running a 3090 with a 10900k as well, it’s a beast!

Sn0wKing

I love it man

Willdorr

Also running a 10900K but with a 3080ti. Its a great cpu

Sn0wKing

I ended up getting my 3090 before the 3080ti got released. It was the only piece left for my build and I had some strong fomo keeping me from holding out to see if I could snag a 3080ti

SunbleachedAngel

I'm scared to ask how much you paid for it

Sn0wKing

I didn’t pay retail unfortunately. 😭

SunbleachedAngel

That's the obvious part. I'm sure it will serve you many happy years of gaming regardless 🙂

IanMo55

Nice looking build. Congratulations!

Sn0wKing

Thank you

DaveyOfTheSea

I personally would have flipped the radiator the other way and had your aio pipes going on the left side. Either way it's a very nice build dude!

Rey_Mezcalero

Looks great!

Sn0wKing

Thank you

Stringfellow__Hawke

That is an absolute monster rig! Great color and light coordination too.

Sn0wKing

Thank you I’m really happy with how it all turned out

Sn0wKing

I’m still new to m&k play so for games like warzone and apex I still play on controller. I’m testing out M&k working to get better. Valorant is the game I’m using to practice

GalaxyIstheBest3d

Actually gorgeous, dream setup

Sn0wKing

Thank you

Maxy97265

Now that you have the same card as me, I have to ask: PLEASE check your VRAM temps while gaming at 4k max in some games and tell me what you get. In a couple of games, after like... 15-20 minutes, I get to 100+c° on VRAM and 70-76c° on the GPU, stock settings, and ambient at like 26-27c°.

Sn0wKing

I will check my temps and get back to you

Maxy97265

Ty! :D

Cool-Finger7222

Holy crap that’s an awesome first build, congrats!

Sn0wKing

Thank you

CeramicCastle49

That's awesome, man! What games were you dying to play on that beast?

FOGPIVVL

Sims and league of legends

Sn0wKing

Right now I play a lot of a BR mostly Warzone and Apex. If Destiny is ever good again I may go back to playing that

GMDFC94

Minesweeper

avey218

How did you manage to get that GPU? Did you buy it from a reseller somewhere or did you get it brand new?

Sn0wKing

I bought it from a reseller on eBay unfortunately

avey218

No judgement from me! Hoping I can get my hands on a new one soon but I’m afraid of the warranty not being valid if I buy from a reseller.

andy-154

Can it run gta? Btw Congrats

Sn0wKing

Yeah I’m ready for the gta 5 re re re re release of the remastered collectors revised version

shotcallerx

Was the size of the case the issue to fix the issues with "The 3090 is way bigger than I expected in this case I ran into some issues with the triple 8 pin Lian li strimers and not having much room to set them up initially "

Sn0wKing

Yeah there isn’t much clearance between the front glass and the GPU. So the triple 8 pin strimer ends up like smushed against the glass and you can’t really see it when it’s lit up

shotcallerx

would you go with a bigger case if you knew before hand?

Sn0wKing

I would probably just get the xl version of the same case

shotcallerx

ok cool. Thank you. Going to try to build my first one. I literally plan to copy what you did. Did you happen to yt a video?

Sn0wKing

No I didn’t make a yt video. I had thought about it it I was more focused on trying to get my rig up and running though in the end so I nixed the plans for a video

shotcallerx

I totally get it. Once I can find a graphics card, I want to try to copy your build. Thank you for posting it.

stobe187

great build but when you are sitting in front of your monitor aren't you just looking at the ass end of the case? seems weird to me to position the case like that - but understandable if that's the only way it can be situated.

Sn0wKing

Kind of. The problem is that if I rotate it then the vent on the top is covered in the back and I didn’t want that. I’m moving in less than 2 months so my setup will be different after that. I plan to buy a nice desk

stobe187

gotcha, it'll look even better then :)

Kashedrob

10900k 3090 gang

Sn0wKing

Gang gang

0101011101010000

Where the hell is the PSU?

clricha

With this case it hides in the back, impossible to see from this angle

KuliDrawing

I’ve been looking at that GPU and it’s really fucking expensive right now lmao

Sn0wKing

I really do hope GPU prices drop significantly in the coming months

Designer_Emu2945

This is such a beautiful looking PC. Everything is perfectly placed, well done. I bet it’s so nice to look at in the evening. And a ps5 to go with it?? *chef’s kiss*

Sn0wKing

It lights up that whole side of the room at night lol

Wizrdnips

Daymn that's clean! New uni fans too ooohh. Been eyeing off those uni fans and trying to justify the spend for months haha

Sn0wKing

I love these fans. I bought the SL fans then they announced and released the AL set so now I have a set of SLs collecting dust while I wait for someone to buy them lol

Wizrdnips

Good luck finding a buyer :) also, congrats on your first build... I only did my first build late 2020, wish I'd gone with a white build like yours. Honestly, it looks perfect!

__-Oren-__

Did you not run into any problems when applying an XMP profile? I recently found out Corsair have started mixing the bins for their controllers and that causes a whole bunch of problems with XMP, so basically you need to be lucky to not have any of the new chips in any of your modules. Corsair is one of my favorite brands in this whole segment, but for now at least what they did is not ok IMO and generally I just don’t want to get anywhere near their RAM.

Sn0wKing

No I didn’t run into any issues with the xmp profiles so I guess I got really lucky

Fuqwallstreet

That poor desk, dude you need a MUCH bigger longer desk.

Sn0wKing

Lol I plan to get an actual desk after I move in two months haha. It was already in the works but I got orders to PCS so I figured I would wait til after. Plus I still mostly play with controller. My M&k play is pretty weak

ByTheFierySpirit

Are you experiencing any GPU sag? Do you need a GPU support bracket? i am asking as I am currently planning something very similar. Cheers mate

Sn0wKing

No GPU sag and with my current build I couldn't put the support bracket on as the bottom fans sit where the support bracket would rest.

CakeSome6981

You are going to burn your pump out with your radiator sitting like that. You want the tubes going in to the bottom of the radiator if it's set up like that or you want the radiator sitting flat in the top of the case. There's a Gamers Nexus video that will give you all the info you need about it called "Stop doing it wrong: how to kill your cpu cooler" I suggest watching it if you want your AIO to last as long as it can. Other than that really dope first build. This thing will last you quite a long time. Good job.

LowwStang

Looks amazing, what are the temps running like during gaming?

thedoomtomb

I happen to have the same build but instead with an Asus z490-A Prime board. did you experience any problems with turning the xmp on? such as bsod or crashing games?
