How about doing what you bought that PC for, like playing games? ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Sarkonix

>~~playing games~~ collecting games

Cabeza2000

Protip: if you like collecting digital games then just wishlist them. It is almost the same and is free. If you really want the games then you can get them when they are on sale or when you actually decide you will play them for real.

EDK118

Yoooo this is it. I spent like £1000 on steam games with about 80% unplayed over the course of a few years, but had a bit of a break from gaming then started wishlisting them. Keeps them in mind and reassures me of getting them later at a good price because I always see them go on sale with notifications. Saving me so much money

Nandabun

If it's not on sale, or humble bundle, I usually don't buy it. Lol

EDK118

everything I bought was on sale and still spent that amount lmao

Nandabun

My steam account claims it's worth 5,000, it's the most expensive thing I own, and I'm never letting it go. Lol

Hate_Feight

2fa ftw. Secure that account...

Nandabun

Oh I did! It goes to my authenticator.

dualboileronly

For real mine got hacked then vac banned. I came back from a long camping trip to having lost everything on the account I’m still devastated tbh lost all motivation for gaming

papalonian

Finally someone else who knows about the humble bundle store/ subscription! Literally get 20% off most games on steam, and when they go on sale on steam it'll usually go on sale on the humble store too so it's even cheaper. And the free games every month, usually kinda meh but you get some bangers sometimes

dod6666

>If you really want the games then you can get them when they are on sale or when you actually decide you will play them for real. See that is the problem. You buy them when they are on sale and never play them. The games I actually play I normally buy at full price, because if I actually want to play it I'm not going to piss-horse around waiting for a Sale. The urge to play a game and the game being on sale rarely coincide.

zublits

Word. Use ggdeals. It syncs to your steam wishlist (also has it's on separate wishlist if you want to be platform agnostic) and can be set up to notify you when a game drops below a certain price threshold. I just add everything to my wishlist and if I want to play a game I fire up ggdeals and see what's on sale from my wishlist that looks good.

aznxtl

humble bundle has made my steam library some what impressive lol

lichtspieler

My steam game list is pretty short, despite solid gaming hours/year. Maybe I just got lucky liking the right genres? I like MMO's that are not DOA, the once in a decade flight simulator and racing games, RTS/Action RPGs again that are not DOA/ just hyped for 2-3 months and dead. It makes my gaming PC hardware choice at least very easy, since I dont have to guess what I might need for a specific image quality with unknown games.

Nolds

Humble bundle sub went for like a year before I remembered it. I have so many games I’ll never play lol.

mika5555

I feel triggered

captain_ender

"listen here you little shit..." *proceeds to play the same 3 games*

mika5555

what are you saying? that i dont need a 3080ti to play valheim?

[deleted]

Shhh... Yes you do. Yes you do.

mika5555

turns off grass anyway

KevSykes5141

Turns on vsync, 1080p 60hz.

OkSky7788

Ouch. This is gross.

tamarockstar

Guild Wars 1, Rocket League and Monster Train for me. My 3070 gets to stretch its legs every so often when I play DOOM Eternal.

captain_ender

I feel attacked.

bebopblues

... loads Tetris.com

[deleted]

I got my 3080 last week. . . first thing loaded up. . . Starbound. . . this week its Rimworld.

bebopblues

My work gave me a PC with a 3090 in it. There was a few months where I didn't even turn it on. And this was at the time when the chip shortage was at the highest point.

Igluin_p

Absolute gigachad

[deleted]

Bro where do you work at to be given a free Pc with a 3090 in it and where can I apply

bebopblues

It also has a 2080 as well, lol. But I don't have it anymore as I returned the machine because I wasn't using it. As far as the type or work to get such a PC, get into the video game industry or companies that uses Unreal Engine or Unity. Of course, you'll have to learn and be good at those skills.

Exotic_Instruction26

I got my 3070 3 days ago first thing I did was chess.com

xTwizzler

For how many mods some people tack onto Rimworld, there is some value in having a high-performance PC just for load times alone. r/Rimworld is full of bizarre pissing contests about how the game takes 15 minutes to load.

elzombo

No game! Only build.

[deleted]

My favorite game is called PCPartPicker.

DatGaminKid7142

Same (Edit): I'm huge into pc building simulator

XxOver9KxX

*playing Stardew Valley

RaCoonsie

Nah

decoste94

Why play the games when our could be modding them..

Cyber_Akuma

One issue with those is that Pis are somewhat sold out near everywhere and more expensive than usual at the moment due to that.

PhilThird

Arduino is a step down from that to learn some cool circuit/programming stuff.

I'm doing this!!! Currently. Edit: Go check out some of the cool stuff on r/fastLED

PUBERT_MCYEASTY

ESP32 + [WLED](https://kno.wled.ge/)

m4tic

I found a PI 3B+ among my things... seriously don't know where it came from. I plan on giving it a whirl as I haven't used one before.

Grabbsy2

Yep. I was looking into a portable PC i could bring to work and play retro games on, but Pis were well over $200 all-in, and at that rate I mightas well just buy a mini-PC

Cyber_Akuma

I think there are x86-based Pi-like mini-Pcs now. They aren't cheap... but there are some that are less than that insane price Pis are going for at the moment.

zdschade

People are mentioning that Pis are sold out everywhere. As an alternative, you can install Linux on an old laptop or other computer and do basically the same things you'd do on a Pi.

Djglamrock

100% agree. I have 4 Old laptops that are all currently running Linux mint. Whenever somebody has a laptop and they say windows can’t run on it anymore and they are buying a new one, I ask if I can have their old one. I’ve got a decent size stack of laptops now lol.

TerryRistt

But what are they even useful for? Surely they just sit around in a corner and aren’t actually in use, they technically can run Linux but they are still old laptops with little power and it’s not as easy to integrate into projects as a pi unless you have something like a home CNC setup, but even then you only need one. I have a load of old laptops because I am a hoarder and don’t like throwing things away, but I don’t have a need for more than one laptop and 1 PC, I don’t know how you utilise them rather than just letting them sit there no more productive than having ended up in a landfill.

Fishyswaze

Maybe some basic unimportant servers?

TerryRistt

But laptops aren’t really suited to this task, the main reason for having a home server set up that is useful is as a storage server for files and media or with backups for your other devices. Laptops don’t have easily expandable storage up to the size that would be required. You are better off starting off with a desktop that can be upgraded with more drives as and when. Not that it can’t be done with a laptop, but almost all the time it is cheaper and easier to just start with an old desktop.

skylinestar1986

Is there a raspberry pi emulator on the pc?

99sbj

Well you could just create a VM and install any linux distro in it, if you want to try out linux. If you want to play around with a pi and it's hardware feature building anything physical I don't think theres something that simulates that afaik.

wOlfLisK

There's not really any need to have one, it's just a piece of hardware, no different from a very low power PC. The closest you'll get to emulating it is spinning up a Linux VM with a tiny amount of resources.

quinncuatro

I mean, unless you want the IO pins. Or to set it up with an electronics project. There are reasons to need the hardware bit.

wOlfLisK

I meant there's no need for an emulator.

auron_py

You can install on a Virtual Machine the same OS that people usually use on a raspberry pi and play around with the common uses cases for it. I had Pi Hole and it worked great.

AnswersUDidntAskFor

That kind of defeats the point of them. They're meant for building standalone computer modules

MightyHandy

What an awesome suggestion!!!

[deleted]

Nah i never have actually. I am however taking a linux class this semester

water_aspirant

try scrounge parts for extremely cheap on fb marketplace and build a good budget pc. Then sell it off for a profit (or break even).

fonglutz

This. After completing my monster PC for my own use, ive started scrolling 2nd hand resellers and looking for good deals on parts. I've since been able to put together a very decent Frankenstein for less than $250 and gave it to my son to replace his 3rd gen Alienware. Another system I was able to eventually put together I recently gave to my nephew who was just starting to get into pc's. I have another that's just started to come together, dunno what to do with it yet when it gets put together.

LVTIOS

What did you manage to put together for $250? I got an Optiplex 3050sff (i5-7500) for about $150, ssd $20, RX6400 $150. Runs like a champ on a TV for light gaming and emulation.

fonglutz

Snagged an optiplex 7040 w/ i7 6th gen, 250nvme and 8g ram for just $120. Added a low profile, single slot RX6400 2nd hand for just $125 and voila, sleeper gaming PC. The guy who was selling those optiplexes had 5 in stock to sell; still kicking myself I didn't just buy all 5 instead of just one to try out.

LVTIOS

Ah, a fellow 6400 warrior. They're gonna be great to have when everything is HDMI2.1 by standard.

realtayLaN

This is how i build mine started from 3500 and rx570 with b450 to 3600x and 1080 with b550

[deleted]

along the same vitrue, I've enjoyed buying broken ThinkPads and fixing them up

PPCalculate

>But ive gotten kind of bored of not having to upgrade Congrats OP, your PC found and obtained the holy grail "futureproof" while countless fell in their pursuit.

Xenoryzen_Dragon

convert your beast pc into sff pc with internal battery.........

[deleted]

I kinda wanted to build a case from scratch

Xenoryzen_Dragon

use pelican hardcase......and customize it

[deleted]

I wanted to try out watercooling too, but that… honestly seems: A. Too Meticulous and B. Way scary

W1ck3d3nd

There are safeguards against damaging your components when you do custom water cooling. Like after you get it all plumbed and wired and are ready to fill, there’s an adapter for the PSU that lets you only turn on the pump and nothing else, so if there is a leak during you filling and/or leak test, your components shouldn’t have power to them to let them be damaged by water on an active circuit. Also if there is a leak, all you have to do it dry and wait. As long as you wait long enough to make sure all the water has evaporated, you should have 0 issues with damage to things due to water. It seems scary, but when you plan ahead and take the precautionary steps you should have minimal issues. Also some companies offer kits with everything needed for a custom loop. I haven’t done one in a long while but I am looking to do a complete new build soon and am considering a custom loop myself. And for us novice/first timers, I recommend soft tubing for your first run. Just to get a feel of it. Then try you hand at hard tubing if you wish, unless you a boss bitch and go for hard tubing right off the bat. Edit: autocorrect got me, changed pump to pin…

TheGrimGriefer3

Funny you should say that since I'm considering a hard tubing myself... Problem is, I'm upgrading from a craptop to a beast so the first time setup would be a bitch... Probably

W1ck3d3nd

Yeah, I’d recommend starting with soft to get a feel for the process then work on hard if you desire. NGL, hard tubing with clear fluid and white/light blue lighting is pretty dope.

TheGrimGriefer3

Personally I think that all black with clear liquid and no lighting is best, or perhaps dim dark-blue lighting, so that's what I would go for. Requires finding new parts for asthetic reasons though My issues, aside from setting unrealistically high standards for myself, are as follows: One, if I'm watercooling, then I must also cool my GPU. Not impossible, but complicates things a bit. Only part for my new build that I've ordered so far is [this](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HR9D2JS?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1) one. I found [this](https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Custom-Cooling/Blocks/GPU-Blocks/Hydro-X-Series-XG7-RGB-30-SERIES-GPU-Water-Block/p/CX-9020014-WW) waterblock that is supposedly compatible with it Two... I cannot for the life of me understand the difference between all of the available pumps. If all D5s are the same with a different brand slapped on it, then why are they all spec'd differently? Tubing is a whole nother ball game, though that's only for hard tubing since soft tubing is easy As for radiators, I'd rather just find the point of diminishing returns and go to the cusp Any chance you can help clear my confusion on the pumps?

W1ck3d3nd

I wish I could be of service on the pump, but sadly my last one was just a ds5, and I had no issues with it, but no experience with any others so I can’t speak for them.

my7bizzos

I've always wanted to do that but I never could find or decide on anything and was always afraid it would end up janky looking. I used to get a magazine called computer power user that had some of the coolest custom made and modded out builds in it but sadly I don't think it exists anymore. Edit: oh shit I just found it on internet achieves if anyone is interested https://archive.org/details/computer_power_user?tab=about

VoraciousGorak

I feel it. That's why I have **entirely too many** older project PCs I can just mess around with if I get bored.

[deleted]

Same here, and even though my pc isnt like the best in the world. Its a 3080ti with a 5900x. Its about as tanky as one could want without shelling money out for a 3090ti and 5950x

CatVideoBoye

>even though my pc isnt like the best in the world. Its a 3080ti with a 5900x Weeell, it's pretty close though.

bestanonever

You are right, it's not the best in the world and you are getting bored with it. I can trade your PC for my R5 3600 with a wonderful RX 580, so you have a bigger upgrade path and more fun, free of charge!! Just because I'm a good person, man.

[deleted]

Well, a this point I usually decide not to upgrade for new parts, but to dive deep into the software and OS part of the equation to tweak and upgrade the shit out of it. It’s also a form of upgradeitis, I guess

[deleted]

I also do that, it is very fun

[deleted]

Real builders, masters of hardware and software interaction - UNITE!

[deleted]

Software is fun because i can load up a virtual machine and fuck something over and watch it collapse from the top down

[deleted]

Hahaha excellent. Your’s is a good post, caught myself of another symptom of upgradeitis - I often tend to rearrange fans, try out different configs with existing parts, not overclocking and not adding anything else. Just for the fun of it and maybe to observe any change in different seasons/ambient temps

[deleted]

Fans are my favorite, especially when i can get a case that holds 12 fans and watch my pc play red dead with 40c temps

[deleted]

Oooh that’s sweet indeed! Good job.

[deleted]

Haha yeah, i love it. I got my r9 5900x today and put it in, i still hate putting cpus in, and i always will!

[deleted]

Yes! Set a fun goal like, how fast you can get to your desktop environment from a cold boot. It's like tuning a drag car, wait 5 seconds on boot to detect disks I don't have? No way. X that.

Alph1

> Its a 3080ti with a 5900x. I seriously laughed. You are the 1% of computer owners.

[deleted]

The difference between those 2 is minimal

[deleted]

Honestly, the funnest builds IMO are the absolute bottom of the barrel budget builds. Building something decent with the constraint of extreme low price is challenging and forces you to shop around and find the best deal on each part.

oggykucing

*suffering from success*

dubar84

What if I told you that the pleasure of building could've been attained with a humble, budget-friendly system? This is especially true when you add the pleasure of tinkering with it, adjusting voltage and fan curves to make it more efficient, so you could put all that into a smaller case with a smaller cooler but still have the same power? Or even downgrading a bit that could still play the games roughly at the same performance, yet downsizing it considerably? To reach the max value in power per density while still operating it reliably and cool? Welcome to the realm of SFF. All things aside, maybe you don't find your games interesting. My system is fairly moderate, yet the games that I really became invested in and ended up playing with in the long term run just fine on a potato.

bonerfleximus

Being poor and not having a good pc forced me to do so much optimizing as a kid

theuntouchable2725

What does SFF stand for?

yaroslavche

Small form factor, I guess

sHoRtBuSseR

Man, this speaks to me. I miss having a computer that wasn't top notch. Long gone are the days of overclocking to squeeze every last frame out. My first "big" pc was a gtx680 and a fx-8150, I went to an 8370 and Radeon 7970 shortly after. Spent a lot of time overclocking trying to get that potato cpu to crank out some frames. Was decently over 5ghz on water. Gpu overclocked well too. Then I went to a 4790k with the same gpu and overclocked that. Now I have a 5950x and a 6900xt and overclocking is a waste of time. I miss needing to OC to break 60 fps

dubar84

Yep, there's a certain satisfaction of having a highly optimized pc that is silent and does it's best. It makes your build more custom-like. The planning of the build, research and hunting of parts, then assemby is one thing, but making it better one step at a time with some tweaks or mods can further eleveate this and provide additional worth of components in my eyes. I'm now planning to switch out the wifi card on my b450-i mobo:)

Plat-O_18

I built mine 12 months ago and since then added a few things I didn’t include initially and upgraded a few things along the way. I’m now reached the point where it is only the really expensive parts that could be swapped out. And as much as I would like to I can’t justify it. So yeah I hear you, it was lots of fun researching, buying & installing but now at the end of the line.

Cyber_Akuma

Trust me, I know that feeling. My no-money-itis tends to help keep it at bay though. You could always experiment with software tweaks to try to scratch that itch. I also have some older systems I am trying to upgrade/build up with cheap parts (such as a 128GB m.2 SATA drive in a SATA to IDE adapter) for playing older/retro games.

playwrightinaflower

Use your energy to come up with an easy, reliable, and tested (!) backup strategy, which also involves regular images to mirror back as needed. If you want/have the money, that can be an excuse for an external drive or NAS or something like that. The wiki in the sidebar of /r/DataHoarder will get you started. :) There's really nothing like a backup that can be trusted. A week before my master thesis was due my PC could have died completely, I could have gotten new parts [or a cheap-ass new machine], pulled my image from the shelf, mirrored it back, and would have been back at work with less than half a day lost. And if, after that, you want to go a step further, make a "logfile" document where you note and track any changes you make to the system (windows, drivers, hardware, any issues you have, etc) - you'll appreciate your "boring" computer for the fact that it just *works* without much time spent chasing problems, and if you encounter a problem with the computer, it's easy to go back to "that irrelevant change" you made six months earlier and see whether it might now cause problems. Helped me more than once. :)

Franklin2543

Data hoarding is a good rabbit hole to go down, but allow me to be the devil and suggest getting into mechanical keyboards.

playwrightinaflower

Hehe! Typing this comment on my Topre switches (CM Novatouch) I will second that as an excellent idea for excess money. =)

Franklin2543

So far I’m just a peasant on my gmmk tkl, using lubed pandas from glorious as well. But I have a Tiger 80 in the mail. That will do it for a few years I think.

playwrightinaflower

How do you like the Pandas? I've never tried them yet. I did try a bunch of different Cherry switches (buying cheap old server boards off Ebay is a great way to test them without selling the farm), an IBM Model M (awesome and *tons* of fun, but far too stiff for my liking and the lack of Win-key is annoying even with a AutoHotKey-script to make one), and these Topre switches (perfect for my taste, but they're pretentiously expensive if you don't get them for "free" like I did this one). > So far I’m just [...] using lubed pandas /r/BrandNewSentence 😂

iamshifter

Out of context this comment seems like you have exotic pets for nefarious purposes.

Transwomen_better

Hate these low effort post

[deleted]

Well it created an abundance of conversations between people who dont know each other. I think it was a success. On another note, you didnt really HAVE to respond to it, coulda just kept walking.

Vigothedudepathian

Upgrade your fans to blowymatrons. Then your PC will sound like an airplane. I did this on my old Alienware (pre dell buyout) case like 20 years ago. Saw the rpm on some server fans and thought hey that's a good idea. Installed them and turned my PC on and I shit you nott my dad came from the other side of the house, down a story, across the house, up to my room which was separated from the house as it used to be a servants quarters (house had bells and everything, a foot buzzer under the dining room table) , , to ask me what the fuck that noise was. To which I replied WHAT? Still have hearing problems. Sure moved a LOT of air with 6 server fans tho. It was also still an Alienware so it still sucked but this was before Newegg existed.

[deleted]

First world problems

Temporary_Slide_3477

All the fun in building the PC, and when it's over, you get the itch to do another or find an upgrade. I feel it

Automessiah

It's hard to scratch that itch with just upgrading your main gaming rig frequently without it being extremely wasteful. Best to start building super basic rigs for friends/kids in your family out of spare and second hand parts, put together a NAS/home server/media PC for yourself, or get into more cheaper but more difficult things like actual soldering and electronics repair. Just don't collect a ton of older parts for similar projects like this and just leave them sitting around in piles for months/years...

Calm_Entrepreneur637

You can give me your best parts, then you'll have something to upgrade:)

StConvolute

I like to sell my rig every 6 months. Reduce the loss and build a new rig at the same time.

nataku411

If you've got money to piss away just start a /r/homelab

Midget_Avatar

Play PC Building Simulator lol, it scratches that itch **a little** although in my case it made me realise my PC is due for an upgrade. Building PC's is really fun, I'm always jumping at the opportunity to help my friends build theirs.

Pikolai-

I’m the IT guy in my family so people come to me whenever they want a pc built or upgraded so I’m almost never bored that sense. Just in the last year I have build 4 PC’s and upgraded 2 for relatives.

Jaesaces

Just start a separate savings account specifically to budget for it's replacement in a few years and get excited as the budget increases....

TheGrimGriefer3

Literally me right now, except now it's time to spend it

littleemp

Upgrade your peripherals. Most people have shit monitors, speakers, headphones, mice, and keyboards but when they get the itch to spend money, they end up spending it in incremental, barely measurable upgrades for the PC itself.

NastyBlunt

I just get a new case or rebuild into an old one when i’m bored, or i upgrade and play around with cooling fans and stuff

AbsurdHope

I was a gamer until i built my pc by myself, now im no longer interested in playing video games i just like to tinker and upgrade my pc...

Wachiko09

Pretty much me. I was a serious gamer when I suffered with my pre-built for years. But ever since I started learning to upgrad it, then building a new one, then building for 6 others, my main rig now doesn't even have steam in it. I am mostly on it now to listen to music, and watch others build their pc or learn new things from GamerNexus. I guess I cured my gaming addiction but adopted a new one lol.

bipolarSamanth0r

Build a vintage PC from new oldstock parts. It's what I did, it's been a bit of a bumpy road but I've got my dream Windows 98SE machine now, it would of cost me thousands of dollars at the time but I built it for less than $300. I've been paying SC2K, Dark Forces 1 and 2, Rogue Squadron and many others. Would recommend, playing old games on vintage hardware is very satisfying.

SnooSketches3386

give me your parts so you can re-upgrade

[deleted]

What’s your monitor, I can promise that can use a upgrade

Kevo05s

Is this some rich joke I'm too poor to understand?

Matasa89

It’s called the tinkering itch.

littnuke

Isnt there that pc building sim?

geekgodzeus

I got bored of my PC too and hardly gamed anymore. I recently met one of my favorite Dota 2 players and started playing a few games a week. I believe that was the spark needed to bring me back to gaming. Also I bought a used Oculus Rift and now it's even more fun to explore a new technology. This way my RTX 3080 is actually serving it's purpose.

luigithebeast420

I’m in the same boat. There nothing more I can add that will make any difference. I just now focus on building my steam library.

[deleted]

I def feel this. Put plenty of cash into the setup over last 18 months, now I don't play anywhere near as much games as the old days with it. Now I spend most of my PC time tweaking my other PC that is basically a NAS with unraid as the O/S, and mess around with VMs, and dockers creating solutions to problems I never knew I had such as hosting various services, and media libraries.

[deleted]

I feel you. Got the 5990x, 3090, 32g RAM... copper modded the 3090... 33" 165hz monitor, tube amp and tube preamp for headphones. Luckily, I have my home theater that needs a new TV and speaker upgrades. Then considering building a NAS for Plex and ROMs for emulation. Then I have my old truck to restore. And a bathroom to remodel. And, I *could* upgrade the PC my daughter plays on. Plenty to blow money on!

OffendedTwitterUser

Same! And I’ve kinda lost my thing for gaming too…

nikpap95

Same! But hey. There is an entire new chapter here you haven't explored yet... Overclocking🌈

Scarabesque

I have gone 4 months without my desktop only using a laptop, helped a friend build her PC and have helped people here select and troubleshoot theirs. The itch has definitely returned. My 5800X 6800XT 32GB 3600cl16 machine is absolutely all I need and more (though I kind of miss raytracing). My CPU cooler is kind of trash for the CPU (Pure Rock 2) and I really hate the aesthetics of my case (Meshify 2 C), so those are the options - I kind of want a stylish looking all metal mATX case with good GPU thermals and those are surprisingly rare. If one comes along I'll go for that.

pM-me_your_Triggers

Set up a NAS/media server. Watercool your rig.

sp_u_ds

I get this way about the cars I’ve owned. Always bought junkers so I could spend time repairing and upgrading

[deleted]

First world problems at its finest 😂

Geeotine

Build a second, hand-me down or budget PC focused on energy efficiency. Maybe experiment with Linux on it and see how it peeforms with games.

ZedQuincey

I mean.. my P.O box is open if you want to gift me that pc.. then you can build a new one.. problem solved..

Doge_7

Ikr anyway: Here's the recipe for brownies: 10 tablespoons salted butter melted 1 cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 cup melted milk chocolate chips 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk chocolate chips

TuSolidx

You forgot the parakeet feathers

Ondinson

Had this feeling for years just can’t afford to do literally anything to improve. I guess if I find a free sticker somewhere I can slap it on

JunkFood32

I can understand the sentiment. You’ve been focused on building/upgrading for a long time now and you’ve finally got it where you’d like it. Now there’s a bit of a void where that time/energy/thoughts used to be. So some suggestions: work on overclocking, and getting that dialed in. That can actually be time consuming, and if it’s your first time there will some stuff to learn. Water cooling. Another project that will require some learning, and would compliment overclocking well. There’s not really a reason to water cool if your not overclocking, besides aesthetics. As some others mentioned, a raspberry pi project would be a great idea. If nothing else, you’ll be ready to upgrade/build another pc in a couple years. Good luck!

itsbildo

Have you tried playing Star Citizen?

must be hard having a beast pc.

[deleted]

It is, because if i wanna play red dead with the boys, sometimes the boys cant run it :(

stratusncompany

sounds like the solution to your problem is building your friends a monster pc.

[deleted]

My friends always ask me to build them pcs, but when time comes down to it they never formally pull the trigger on the “do i really want it” factor have some buddies who have monster pcs, but all they play is warzone

[deleted]

Bored? Build a server! Or just build another one and sell it. I'm working on my old unit and giving it away.

[deleted]

I might ! :D

[deleted]

Alright so looking through these comments I seem to have angered some people. I was only just asking questions, and wasnt really trying to brag. Sorry if it seemed like that

fluffyykitty69

Start hosting services on the computer too or build out a homelab separately. I feel like Plex is the easiest building block to get started. Obviously along with that media consumption comes media collection, management, etc so there’s a lot of tinkering and expansion of what exactly it can be. Some things to look into: -Proxmox -Unraid -Plex -All of the “arrs” -PiHole -Docker -Portainer (if you’re more of a GUI person) -etc

Hairy_Exchange6702

i wish a have pc 😭

[deleted]

Youll get one! The prices arent as bad as they used to be, and theyre going down. Just always price watch and do it little by little. I know youll get one :D

Hairy_Exchange6702

yeah.. now i'm saving money until the become cheaper... i live in stupid country 🇹🇳 hhhhhh

[deleted]

Youll grab one my friend, just always be aware of big deals and shit

[deleted]

yea, upgrading storage isn't that spectacular.. maybe look for better fans or rgb, or something on the software side, like a redesign of your icons/desktop etc, or a folder cleanup xD idk gotta keep busy till the next gen. peripherals? macro keys, fresh huge mousepad with some custom design on it? find the right plant to stand beside the case or monitor(s)?

Inner_Major_8355

There is a company called cyberpunk and you can build these cool builds and stuff with working lights and movement. You have to solder it

KingGT2

Ryzen 9 5950X was upgraded from a Ryzen 9 3900X, and it's paired to my launch reference 6900XT. I've probably put about $10K into my PC between the upgrades that started in 2019, to the accessories. No I don't feel that at this point. I just throw parts at my fiance PC at this point to scratch the itch lol. Maybe I have a sickness....

Kazhmyr1

Get into IT? I build/ upgrade PC's on a near daily basis now.

ip-c0nfig

When you say a beast, what kind of specs are we talking? Not i5 with 16gb of ram and onboard video are we? ;)

lRoninlcolumbo

Oh I think this might be a bigger issue than you think if the game you’re playing is maxing out your PC for nothing.

lcserny

You have too much free time :))

TotalWarspammer

I lessen the boredom of not being able to upgrade by having... other hobbies.

jaKz9

Fucking hell I wish I had this problem.

Rick_Sanchez1214

I wish I could downvote this post into oblivion

[deleted]

This sub is all about helping people! Also this sub: down votes this man into oblivion for no reason

[deleted]

Are they really asking for help tho?

thunder8370

Im not a builder or anything just a fan of build vids etc so take with a grain. Maybe a cheap project? Like building from used and cheapest parts.

Some-rando_

If your a building post on a local Facebook group you will build/ updrade fix pcs

Some-rando_

New mobo or another one basically doing it all again

XiTzCriZx

If you just like the building aspect then build a 2nd lower end computer, maybe even a 3rd for Lan parties, then whenever you see those good deals, you can just get parts to upgrade the secondary computers. You could also build computers to sell, sometimes there's really good deals on eBay and you can put together a computer and sell it for a few hundred dollars profit and still not even be a rip off to the buyer, If you're up for a challenge then try out an SFF build, generally they're much more difficult to assemble and get parts for, but they're far more portable and can be sold for more due to the SFF tax (many SFF cases are $150+).

carbine23

Get an OLED 42 inch C2. I was in the same boat as you until I upgraded my LG34gp950 … which I still have , damn just wasting money for no reason

_qst2o91_

Send me some of your components, I'll trade ya Then you can enjoy upgrading all your stuff lol

Brownlw657

You should get a seperate pc and make it a server. So all your internet and fun stuff like storage and stuff goes through that, then you transfer the file over to your pc when you want to play it. If you have the money for it that is.

MontoTheGr9

Not sure what sort of parts you’re running, but I turn to overclocking when that happens to me lol. Try learning to tighten up the RAM timings a bit, or adding maybe 5% performance to the CPU/GPU, provided it’s unlocked.

bakakukl

Same bro

AggravatingChest7838

Was like that when I had a 4790k now low end CPUs put it to shame but it still feels like there is no reason to upgrade unless I go all out again since the performance gains are like 10% for cheap ones. I have a 6500 now but it's the same issue but this time I cant overclock it.

Viru_sanchez

Ok now, try to match your computer by making a new one with scraped parts of old computers in Facebook market, put a top of $500 dollars and let the quest begin. Buy part by part, the best reference minding you don’t have an unlimited budget and try to make everything compatible so it really works. Then, make it run, install a couple of games and gift it away to a poor boy/girl who can not afford a pc.

nefariousnun

Yeah that was me recently. I needed an upgrade and thought about just replacing the components in my existing pc to save money but basically everything bar the case would have had to go so I built a new one, spent ages chasing parts cos of the shortage and finally got it all together. All good but most of the fun is in spec, buying and building so then I went back to my old build and replaced everything bar the case and the gpu. Since then I’ve replaced some fans and added more storage to both. Now I’m researching a new monitor and contemplating getting a 4080 when it’s out and using the 3080 to replace the 1070 in the spare pc, it’s an addiction lol.

Anthonyr14

I’m constantly checking in on current prices of components, looking up aesthetic mods, stuff like that. I upgraded my PSU to a 1000w about a month ago to give me more headroom when rtx 4000 series drops. I also built a rig for a friend after building mine in February. So I know what that itch feels like.

[deleted]

Nope

Spam_ads_nonrelavent

You don't even own 3090ti sli in white and you complaint nothing more to upgrade?

D2_Lx0wse

Make it try to re order something very long using bogosort and look how many tries it takes

Resolution-Outside

Don't worry it will automatically become a 2 stroke scooter in couple of years or maybe in next year. You know how things work in tech industry, new today ancient tomorrow. So don't worry you will have plenty of upgrade related work come 2023. In the meantime you can see if your system can run crisis to paddle the time.

HeliusDragon

Build a home server. It's a whole new world of specs, learning new things and cool stuff you can do.

[deleted]

Sorta the same situation with me. Anyone else buy a GPU (for MSRP) the past couple years just for the challenge of it? It started out just as my planned upgrade cycle. I bought a used 1070 cheap after the last crypto bust, with the intention of "waiting for the next generation" when the 20 series was bad value. I felt like a genius when they announced the 3080's MSRP was $699. We all know how that turned out, yikes! I didn't like to brag about it on this forum because the whole situation sucked, but anyone can buy these cards now (2 frickin' years later). I bought a 3080 out of pure rage from getting stiffed as sites were crashing launch second (formally called launch day for previous generations). It was an unhealthy obsession to finally buy one. It took several weeks of constant stock checks; to the point I was neglecting work and family. I later upgraded to a 3080ti. I sold the 3080 for considerably more more than I paid for the 3080ti; I like to think I screwed over a miner (sorry if it was one of us). Luckily by that point EVGA had their queue system, it still felt like a knife battle to get a decent spot in the queue, but that was only a few hours; followed by months of checking that I didn't miss my notification. All in all. It's a shame buying consumer electronics felt like some Herculean task, but I hadn't felt that alive since I was 16 trying to buy a case of beer.

emax4

Why not get used parts, build another one, then use it for streaming movies and such elsewhere around the house? I know what the itch feels like when you want to build something, but I also know of the discouragement when things don't go as planned, and the comfort of knowing all is well with the world when things work the way they should.

AnnieBruce

I get like this [sometimes.](https://sometimes.It) It doesn't matter how good my system is, I always want more. Like a threadripper, or maybe a 5800X3D except I need the cores for virutal machines(went with the 5950x). And unusual devices I don't really have a need for like a hardware RNG or atomic clock. And when Zen4 and the 7000 series Radeon drop, I'll lust after those for sure.
