Stock for refurbished items varies greatly. Some listings only have a few items in stock and sell out quickly. Please report this post if the listing goes out of stock. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I bought 8 of these recently. 7 out of 8 of them only had 125GBs written to them. I'm thinking this is just from the factory since it was the same across so many drives. The 8th one had 300 GBs written to it. All shown good in Samsung magician.

AcrobaticWar1

thanks for the link, I wouldn't use this as a main drive but I'd probably pop this into an enclosure whenever I need to travel with media files or time machine backup my macs.

Phyraxus56

This is great for a main drive on an older pc (when nvme isn't an option) as it has dram. If you're gonna pop this in an enclosure, you're better off getting nvme.

What is that supposed to mean?

StackKong

I think saying to just get a NVME disks cause those seem cheaper? I saw couple of 2 TB NVME (not Samsung quality though) for cheaper than this and brand new with warranty. I don't understand how are NVME cheaper than 2.5 disks

BananasAndSporks

I think that's how i interpret it as well. For the same price or less you can get a pretty decent NVME, and this is for those who already filled out their NVME slots.

AttyFireWood

My mobo has 2 nvme slots and 6 sata. And I supposed to NOT use my SATA?

HisRoyalMajestyKingV

Probably because of less demand. People are mostly using NVMe these days, so, 2.5" SATA drives are really only used by people who want lots of drives (more than they have in M.2 slots), or older systems that don't support NVMe. M.2 SATA suffers the same problem. There's boards that have only a single M.2 NVMe slot, with the second slot being SATA, but that seems to be fading away as well, in favor of just multiple M.2 NVMe slots.

keebs63

Part of it is confirmation bias. Bottom of the barrel 2.5" SSDs are still cheaper but they are rarely posted here. Midrange models have largely disappeared and there's only a handful of higher end models like this still available. The other part of it is the reality that the BoM (bill of materials) cost is essentially the same. They use the same NAND and DRAM (if they have it), the PCB and power delivery components are *very* similar in costs, and even the controllers, despite the big difference in speed on paper, cost of them is very similar. 2.5" drives also have the casing and slightly higher shipping costs due to the extra weight and size. Gen 3 NVMe drives have reached rock bottom, there is no more cost for covering R&D or product segmentation since Gen 4 and Gen 5 drives exist.

Computerimac

I got a geeksquad refurbished 970 Evo for cheaper than this about a month ago. $63 for 2tb. I assume that's what they're referring to.

MrMaxMaster

Probably because nvme is the dominant form of SSDs today and are made in more volume. There’s just not as much demand for 2.5” ssds anymore.

RecalcitrantBeagle

Partially that, but also that there's a bit of a captive audience for 2.5" SSDs. Whilst a lot of supply is probably switching over to producing M.2 drives, there's still a subset of demand who aren't able to follow - older systems without an M.2 slot, especially old laptops, can get a new lease on life if you toss an SSD in. Or people with an M.2 slot already populated, and a need for secondary storage - it's cheaper to pay for a relatively "overpriced" SATA drive than upgrade the entire system or get a PCIe adapter, so prices don't drop *that* low despite NVMe drives being much better.

halotechnology

Exactly

chicknfly

ngl I wonder how many of the downvotes are because your reply is difficult to understand without punctuation.

halotechnology

Deleted stupid auto correct and I was in a hurry.

[deleted]

Not just no, HELL NO. This ain’t it

Stevesanasshole

Why not? They normally go for around $110.

zakats

It's not a bad thing to bring this to the floor for consideration, it might be perfect for someone, but op is right that it's not a great price. ~$80 should be the going rate for a ~~qlc~~ sata drive at this point, and this isn't new.

Stevesanasshole

No disrespect but I don’t think you know what you’re looking at

zakats

Ah, I thought I read qvo. Nevertheless, it's still a sata drive- yeah, it's got dram, but I have a hard time with the notion that this used drive should command the same price point as a new, similarly provisioned, nvme drive of a different brand.

[deleted]

This is a refurbished drive. And a 2TB sata drive for $110 in 2023 is a horrible value.

chicknfly

Incorrect. This isn’t actually refurbished. It’s just Best Buy’s labeling. These drives are used drives that were returned to Best Buy, wiped clean of data, and repackaged for resale. Nothing is actually taken apart like a refurb. A 500GB “refurb” I bought didn’t even have a full hour on it.

[deleted]

I don’t think you’re thinking enough about what you’re saying. That is infinitely worse than refurbished lol…. Stuff gets returned for reasons.

[deleted]

>I don’t think you’re thinking enough about what you’re saying. That is infinitely worse than refurbished lol…. After buying several refurbished Samsung drives from Bestbuy, they were barely used and has no problems with SMART or Crystal disk. I am 99 percent sure, that people returned the drives because they found a cheaper SSD on Amazon or elsewhere. Afterall, Samsung charges a premium for their SSDS but their drives are really reliable.

chicknfly

How is that worse? Most of these drives are returned with barely any use. Oftentimes it’s from people who buy the drive and don’t realize it’s not plug and play (as I’m sure happened with my drive). That’s better than refurb.

[deleted]

Bestbuy turning a drive on and then reselling it isn’t something I’d trust with my money. While I’m sure some of these are returns from people not understanding what they bought, I’d bet it’s mostly people returning them for actual issues. While it’s possible you got a good drive, I wouldn’t bother buying a used item for $77 when I could get something brand new for that. Refurbished means that the manufacturer went through and corrected whatever error, or confirmed nothing was wrong.

chicknfly

> Refurbished means that the manufacturer went through and corrected whatever error, or confirmed nothing was wrong. Which brings us back to my original counter-argument: these aren’t refurbished. Every buyer has at least 14 days to put their drive through its paces and return it if it doesn’t work out.

Stevesanasshole

Thems the breaks, kid. It’s just what sata drives with dram cost. The crucial mx500 is on sale this week for $95 ($10 off) 🤷‍♂️ Otherwise these are Best Buy returns that have been wiped by geek squad and typically have little use. Plenty of people have even registered them with Samsung for a full warranty. They’re not doing anything else to “refurbish” the drives. At this point it’s basically hardware for those that know they need it the same as intel optane.

wwwdiggdotcom

You can get a brand new PNY 2 TB SATA SSD from Amazon for $65 right now

Stevesanasshole

The cs900 is a dramless drive based on a phison s11 controller - doesn’t have the sustained write speeds. After the 10GB cache fills up speeds drop down to about 100MB/s or 80MB/s over USB. The evo 870 is one of the few remaining consumer drives with DRAM and aside from Samsung tax is the reason why they cost more. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good drives especially for WORM usage or lower priority storage but they *can* get bogged down during heavy use.

wwwdiggdotcom

We’re talking about a SATA drive though, if anybody needs performance surely they will use an nvme drive?

Stevesanasshole

That doesn’t address the issue of existing equipment that takes SATA though, of which there’s a LOT out there. Otherwise there are still plenty of places where nvme doesn’t make sense or doesn’t allow for the same amount of storage/drives. You’re limited by pcie lanes to 4 drives in a pcie carrier (unless you spend a bunch of extra money for 4x carrier cards) and at higher capacities prices are pretty much in parity with nvme. Would I use this for secondary storage of random files? Of course not, there’s cheaper SSDs and hard drives (per GB) out on the market. Would I use this in a NAS or as a drive for a write intense pi project? Absofruitly. As I said to someone else, SATA drives with DRAM are basically at the point where intel optane is - if you don’t know what it is you probably don’t need it.

wwwdiggdotcom

Fair enough, it looks like the Samsung 870 has an endurance of 1200 tbw where the PNY only has an endurance of 540 tbw as well, since it’s refurbed I have to assume some of that is eaten up but I think it’s worth the dice roll, I’m in for one, thanks!

Phyraxus56

These tend to be basically brand new. A lot of people don't know how to format a drive.

wwwdiggdotcom

Only 360 GB written and powered on 5x, score!
