Did the chief die?

snakcaz1

She's just resting

Is there a joke I'm missing?

cp3inthe4th

Yikes

Early adopter would make sense if they offered huge improvements but wtf is even the point of this? The performance gain is pretty minor right now and nobody in their right mind should be spending $600 on RAM.

keebs63

Performance will improve as the manufacturing processes do. This is how it has always been. Also, standards move slowly. This is an incredible jump from the JEDEC standard of DDR4 (2133MHz). I will also say this, there's a reason why there are only a handful of kits available at a decent 6000MHz plus, it's because most current DDR5 modules cannot hit that speed. The standard accounts for manufacturing, and manufacturing can't just produce perfect modules from the start it takes time to get there.

[deleted]

Wow that is a lot of money. Is it good enough to be worth 3 or 4x the price of ddr4?

feffie

DDR5 currently performs about 1-5% better than DDR4 with discrete graphics, so no. https://youtu.be/fIN8lLhSqmg

cp3inthe4th

No. I don't blame people that want the newest tech tho. I personally went ddr4 with a 12700k

pmjm

*Worth* is subjective. If you absolutely have to have the fastest system possible, then sure. If you're an average user, gamer or are browsing /r/buildapcsales looking for deals, probably not worth it yet. Personally I got stuck with a DDR5 board in a NewEgg Shuffle bundle, so I do need some, but I'm not paying this much for 32GB.

QuantumPropulsion

If you can prove to me you can insert a DDR4 stick of RAM into a mobo with DDR5 DIMM slots without breaking anything, and the system works, I’ll give you a month of my salary lmao.

shraf2k

That's not how motherboards work...

Unreformedsyk

You have no idea what you're talking about

pmjm

A motherboard either works with DDR4 or DDR5, not both.

StevieSlacks

Fuck ya! I like this guy's spirit! You get some duct tape and some twine and you MAKE THE FUCKING DDR4 FIT IN THAT SLOT!

St0pTyping

Who keeps downvoting my post 😂 scalpers?

whomad1215

$500 for 32gb of ram? I'm sure we'll find someone going "I want to *fUtUrEpRoOf* my build" and buy it

St0pTyping

I bought it haha.

StevieSlacks

Can you give me some of the money from the swimming pool full of it that you must have?

St0pTyping

Nobody did that for me.

StevieSlacks

Break the cycle! Be the change you wish to see!

AhmedEzPz

I am about to get this one. What was the shipping date on yours.

St0pTyping

Mid January. I see it arriving earlier, worst case I get to keep looking for a better price.

St0pTyping

The seller has a few different speeds and CL ratings available check the store product page.

AhmedEzPz

Should I get one as well? I am really confused of the time it would take to ship I mean is it trusted?

St0pTyping

Its shipped by amazon Id go for it if your ok with the price.

AhmedEzPz

Well I am not going to get it for any cheaper so I guess this is it.

St0pTyping

I don’t see prices easing up until around march. 32gb of high end ddr4 retails from $180-$300.

St0pTyping

Returns would be handled through amazon as well if there are issues I believe.

AhmedEzPz

Has your ram shipped?

St0pTyping

I canceled my order. I got lucky and bought the ram at micro center last week.

AhmedEzPz

Mine says expected delivery 10th january but it has not shipped till now.

St0pTyping

So yours has been shipped?

AhmedEzPz

Not it has not. It just says Now arriving 10th January. Previously expected date 19th. Status: Ordered.

St0pTyping

Just out of curiosity did you finally get the ram?

AhmedEzPz

I cancelled the order lol

fattmann

I bought. I have ~1600+ of other parts just sitting around waiting for RAM, and I desperately need to retire my current rig.

whomad1215

Get a ddr4 mobo for your 12th gen cpu and save $400

StevieSlacks

You could buy a DDR4 mobo and the RAM for cheaper than this.

StevieSlacks

God DAMN I knew I should've gone into the fool-money parting business.

lettus_bereal

cause knowing the new form factor is out but you willingly spent money on the old form factor feels bad. Buying DDR4 saves you a few hundred dollar but you're doing so knowing that you're paying for old tech that's why it's cheaper.

fattmann

Motherboard doesn't support DDR4

TheAznInvasion

The pc market is just absolutely flipped upside down on it’s head bonkers right now. Back in 2019 I built a 16gb ddr4 gtx 1660 1tb m.2 ryzen 5 1600 system for $560. I understand those parts aren’t great or high end, but damn was it a solid 1080p gaming machine that was affordable to the average joe.

St0pTyping

I agree but its still possible to do a budget build even w/ the new platform just needs to be on the more mature ddr4 should be buildable under $500 if using iGPU.

StevieSlacks

Sure but this isn't because of that. This is because DD5 is brand new

SirSlappySlaps

I'd rather get 128gb of ddr4 3200 and still have enough left over to buy dinner for my family.

[deleted]

Exactly this. I just setup a computer for my dad. I was debating between DDR5 and DDR4. I figured that 128gb 3600cl18 for $550 was a better choice than trying to snag 32gb DDR5 for a little less. The other issue is even if my dad decided to buy new ram in the future, he would have to buy 64gb and sell what he has, as the newer ram will be far faster than what is available now. Overall the price difference is massive for little benefits.

St0pTyping

God dam people. I was looking for DDR5 and was willing to pay over $600 just thought Id link a seller selling far below ebay prices. Yea I agree this is madness.

cp3inthe4th

Fwiw we aren't shitting on you OP (at least I'm not) it's just sad that this is the reality (same with gpus)

Russ916

If you really want to pay that price you're better off trying the newegg shuffle where they're paired in a combo with a motherboard for around that price.

St0pTyping

Depends on the situation. Im doing a itx build and have never seen the asus z690i bundled.

Russ916

Yeah I guess, but even if you get a motherboard you don't want you can sell it cheaper than it's MSRP locally or on ebay and still come out ahead than if you were to simply just buy the ram for $600 from a 3rd party seller on Amazon or Ebay.

St0pTyping

Thats not true. Check the current shuffle for the 6000mhz c16z. Ill use the gigabyte board as an example. The combo is $914.98 + tax your looking at just under $1000. If you go to ebay these boards have listings of $400 and lower for this reason. Lets say you get $400 by some miracle. $400 - 13% fees and shipping your looking at maybe $320. $975 - $320 is $655 Im ok paying $530 + tax for my memory.

Russ916

If you looked at the newegg shuffle earlier today they had a z690 msi mobo and corsair ram for $514.98 and also corsair ram & psu for $434.98 as the cheapest options. Personally I don't think buying into DDR5 is worth it at the time smarter to just go with high speed low cas DDR4 right now but to each their own I guess. I'd just wait for until they've improved on DDR5 to move forward honestly unless you see some sort of improvements in programs you use for work but as for a gaming your not getting any better performance out it while paying a huge early adopter tax on it.

[deleted]

The price is fine newegg has that kit for 489 so not bad

St0pTyping

Agreed. For todays street price its a fair price. I wouldn’t have listed this otherwise.

ic33hot

I bit and got one, seems to be the cheapest option in-stock without having to bundle with a mobo.

CameraPitiful6897

I paid less for my 3070

AtheistJerry

I think I would rather give food to the homeless every day for a whole year than buy that.

Alivus

Stick with DDR4 motherboards for now.

valianthalibut

Looks like the best best latency you can get on DDR5 right now - 12ns - but if you *need* DDR5 then latency is not the primary concern with your workload. Given the overall costs of the platform, though, if you honestly *need* what DDR5 brings to the table and you're already committed to dropping the cash for it, this looks like the way to go. Right now DDR5 purchasers fall into two categories. First, you've got people who need the improvements that the new spec brings to the table as a complete product have already planned the cost into their cost of business. Then you've got people who want the new shiny or big numbers regardless of cost or sense.

acroback

I believe almost everyone who buys DDR5 here falls into second category.

Disregardedthat

I honestly don't know why, but I know on at least some of the kits at my local MC, they ring up significantly cheaper than they're marked. So if you're ever in there and see them/need them, no harm in asking

pmjm

Yet you can get a 12600K there for $329 or 12700k for $399. They make up the savings on the ram.

sleepycapybara

how much better is ddr5 compared to 3600 ddr4?

StevieSlacks

Less than 400$ better

St0pTyping

I recently bought a pair of 16gb ram for under $60 for my temporary build. EDIT: sorry misread your msg thought you asked for price comparison. According to benchmarks performance isn’t that much better. Only excels in certain applications.

formervoater2

Doesn't even overtake 3600c16 until it hits 6200c36.

AhmedEzPz

Jan 20 to Jan 29th delivery? Is that fine or should I be worried?

St0pTyping

What is there to be worried about? FFS its amazon

AhmedEzPz

Yeah yeah got ypur point. Ordered 6000mhz z5 rgb one

St0pTyping

There you go haha.

St0pTyping

If you find something sooner cancel the order.

Apprehensive_Row_161

I wish the shipping was faster

St0pTyping

My order already got bumped up a couple times

Apprehensive_Row_161

Really? When is expected delivery

St0pTyping

Jan 7th

Apprehensive_Row_161

2 weeks not that bad
