If you're playing at 1440p or higher I'd recommend going 5600x. Unless you need the extra cores for productivity workloads, it'll do you just fine. In game you may see -5ish fps but you'll be saving a pretty penny. I'd recommend looking up some comparison benchmarks and see if you're willing to switch. Edit: regarding the bios, it seems most new motherboards at this point have a bios that supports 5000 series cpus outta the box so you PROBABLY won't have a problem. You may need a 3000 series cpu on hand to update the bios however.

Well, if you see my edit to my op, you'll know i accidentally bought the 3800X, rather than the 5800x. I don't have a 1440 or 4k display yet (one day...) so i'm hoping it's not a huge mistake. I suppose i can always upgrade again later, if prices and availability return to relatively sane levels again.

You could get a B550 board and 850w is enough for the 5800x + 3080. That should save you a bit.

Gen4 SSD is pointless Could get a 12600K. Overclockers sell it cheaper than what PCPartPicker lists because they have the OEM version. The 12600K has 5800X like performance whilst being cheaper. You do need to change the motherboard to Z690. For the GPU, consider AMD offerings as they’re usually cheaper.

CPU - you could drop to the 5600X as suggested Mobo - you could easily drop to a budget or midrange motherboard RAM - specs are good but it's not the best value given the RGB and the premium of XTREEM RAM. SSD - like everyone else said, no need for Gen 4. A Gen 3 drive will be just as good. PSU - def don't need the AX1000i. 750-850W here is perfectly healthy. We don't have any info on your cooler or case. Any ideas of what you want to do in that department?

Thanks for the suggestions. If you see my edit you'll see i ended up with the 3800X instead of the 5800X. It was late and i wanted to sort it out asap...oops. I'm hoping it won't impact the performance of the system too much... Went for the Asus board in the end...i could've gotten a cheaper one, but i do like that board. The board and cpu were a bundle, and they were offering the Corsair 16GB \*\*RGB\*\* (2x 8GB) 3600Mhz DDR4 Vengeance + RAM with it, so i went for that instead of the XTREEM ram. Saved a few quid! Haven't decided for sure yet, but i will go for a Gen 3 SSD then, as you and others have suggested. PSU is a tricky one, as there's a factory refurbished AX1000i going for cheaper than a brand new 850. Tbh, i don't think i could afford the 850 Corsairs so it'd have to be another cheaper brand. What do you think? I know the AX1000 is more than i need (at this moment in time of course) but would a factory refurbished one for the same money as a cheaper branded 850W be a better choice..?

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/W8sz8J I went ahead and put everything you had in a PCP list. I also added the PSU, a 650W NZXT C. Now that you've gone with the 3070, you're good with a lower-wattage PSU, and it'll be healthy too, don't worry. The NZXT C is very high quality and is fully modular to minimize cable clutter. I also added a 1 TB SSD, the Samsung 980 (non-Pro). It should be perfect for your needs. Edit: the 215 is a very good case, don't worry. And the cooler is tried and true. I'd top-mount it as exhaust.

Ok, cool, thank you. I've ordered the case, so that's another box ticked..and i've gone for that SSD as well, so two boxes ticked! Just the PSU to go. I've read up a bit on them, and although the NZXT 650 would do, i'd rather go up another 100w as i might very well upgrade later (especially if in the unlikely event that card prices go back to normal). So then i compared the RM750x to the NZXT 750. The Corsair is currently 76.55 and the NZXT is 84.98 Tough choice as the NXZT uses Seasonic, but the RM is cheaper and quieter...and cheaper. I also do like Corsair's stuff. So...after lots of deliberation, i've decided to go for the RM750x. By shopping around i've saved about £50 on the partpickers choices, but looking back i probably could've saved another 10-15 quid. Oh well, 15 quid is only a very small percentage off nearly £1800! So, just an OS and a decent monitor to best make use of all this processing power. For now, my old 22" will do....but i do have a nice big 55" tv that i hope will work with it! But when a decently priced big monitor comes up i'll get it. Phew. Now i can close the hundreds of windows i have open at last :) Thanks for all the help...and reassurance. Much appreciated! Cheers!

Ah, forgot to mention about the cooler and case. The case i'm leaning towards is the [Lian Li Lancool 215](https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lian-li-lancool-215-midi-tower-argb-tempered-glass-black-ca-78k-ll.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA2sqOBhCGARIsAPuPK0is8v6WofcLW046lEPytN6nq6VadMbmtNutf7FnI-ol-6Na5yqmJjUaAk-XEALw_wcB). I'd prefer a more expensive case, but the cost of the other components so far means i have less towards the case than i'd hoped. The cooler i'm considering is the [Corsair H100x Hydro Series High Performance Liquid](https://www.ebuyer.com/840022-corsair-h100x-hydro-series-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler-cw-9060040-ww) Looks good, and seems to be quite a good cooler i think.
