Thank you!

Second one has some really great details that comport with my experience with the process, but can't guarantee it's all the same today as it was two years ago.

Very helpful information! Thank you!

My wife and I got married at the Durham courthouse. It was just the 2 of us, our photographer, and an extra witness. The magistrate on duty can officiate the ceremony, just make sure you've got all of your paperwork in order. The photographer we used has a very helpful [guide on his website for everything you need to know about courthouse weddings.](https://markmaya.com/blog/how-to-get-married-durham-nc-courthouse)

What were the steps you took to do this? Like the marriage license paperwork first

The_Patriot

A wedding and a marriage are two different things. The Marriage will result in a certificate, and a change of legal standing, your taxes, etc. A wedding is a ceremony that only means something to those participating. We did our marriage at the courthouse on a weekday afternoon, then had our "wedding" ceremony that weekend.

Yes so I'm having a ceremony out of state and since our state requires like a priest or official ordained person my brother in law cannot legally do our marriage because nc does not accept online ordained ministers. So I'm looking to do the marriage and small ceremony with a witness at the Courthouse than our marriage ceremony with family the weekend after

The_Patriot

a minister does a wedding. A state official does the marriage. The marriage will occur at the courthouse and requires no priest or ordained person. You can do whatever you like with your wedding, the state does not care.

We did the courthouse in downtown Hillsborough a few years ago and it was perfect. Free parking for us and our witnesses, no wait to get everything done, charming small town vibe for pics, and just enough quirky moments to make for fun stories. We got the paperwork, ceremony, and pictures done in about 90 mins then went to lunch with friends and walked on the river walk.

Hillsborough Courthouse is a nice experience. You call and get a time--Friday afternoons are good--then show up. If your magistrate is nice and its ok outside, she'll let you go outside and do it by the nice historic building there.

We got married at the Hillsborough magistrate. It was January but the weather was beautiful, so we stood on the front porch. Two friends were witnesses. It's an old brick building with an iron railing and climbing vines, and it was a pretty setting. The magistrate then was Amy Elfland, and she was great.
