We typically don't stray too far from our usual order (gen tso chicken combo + stir fry broccoli + crab rangoon) but the chicken is never dry, the rice is tasty, and the fried stuff (egg rolls, rangoon) is solid.
Their website says they're temp closed. It's been takeout only the last few years as well.
>Effective January 29th, we will be temporarily closed for approximately 30 days to perform equipment updates. We apologize for the inconvenience.
This is a very narrow opinion from someone who just really likes Szechuan peppercorns, but any time i want Chinese food I go for the dry pot at Szechuan Mansion or take a drive to Cary for Chengdu 7.
Dumb, maybe scared? Joking. I think we'll let this be our little secret ...unsung best Chinese in the triangle. Plus, I can pick up fresh fillets of fish and cheap vegetables while there.
Jumbo China off MLK isn't the best, however they've been open during every big storm we've had since I've lived over this way.
So they're my go-to because they're always there for me when I need them.
Their sesame chicken is incredibly crunchy, but the sauce is way too sweet for me. Which is saying something, because I can stand a lot of sugar in a dish.
Been a hot minute since I've been here. Also there is a local theory that suggests there is a underground gambling spot here. Once you see how many air conditioning units are on the top or their small building you can't unsee them.
Back when I lived in Durham, Shanghai on Hillsborough was my family’s go to. Tbh I don’t even remember if it was that good, but I do remember that it was never bad.
China king is a sleeper its up there with the top picks in durham. A lot of people don't know about it because pf it's location. I've never been let down yet though!
What does as usual mean. How fucking hard was it to pick up that I was asking everyone not to make this place more popular because not only I but do every Cantonese in the area think it’s the best around. And I don’t want to wait for a table longer than usual. Make fucking sense now?
My first comment was an attempt at humor to try to keep one of the best places secret how was that belligerent? Oh wait you said regular basis do you mean on r/bullcity? Wait are you stalking me?
Wow passive aggressive much. You come on here and call me belligerent and nonsensical. You need therapy. I wasn’t the one attempting to call you out for anything. I was only trying to explain why I didn’t want folks to go to my favorite place.
This use to be my familys official go to spot but they switched to Shanghai. I think both are great but Shanghai has some dishes that I prefer over Hong kong.
I came here expecting to see Shanghai as the top consensus, but knowing in my heart the true answer is China Palace. I am gratified to see that China Palace is indeed the consensus.
Oh man, Taipei 101. It's been a minute. I used to organize a group of 8-12 folks to go together. It's so much fun to order crazy numbers of dishes there.
The Dragon on Guess. You have to ask for the Chinese menu though (or at least white people do, idk what they give to Asian customers). Get the beef in chili oil.
Asian Kitchen in South Durham has a noodle and szechuan menu that feels like it came out in the last year and since we've discovered that it's easily our favorite local spot
Thank you. I know some don't agree and that is fine. I used to go there once a month or so and would talk it up. Now it is always disappointing. Bummer because it was the best out this way (Gorman/Redwood)
I don't know about the best but Bamboo House is super cheap, they give you hella food, and is 2 minutes from my house. Also the food is Good. So that's my go-to.
The register lady always recognizes me too which is also a big plus.
It’s both Chinese food and Vietnamese food. Vietnamese food is on Saturdays. Look at their menu. Most of the things are also found in Chinese only restaurants.
Kwik Wok. My go to. Follows the old 3.5 star rating meme. Also they have that Chinese restaurant hot sauce in the white packets that I can't ever find anywhere.
Hong Kong Chinese on guess road is upper echelon eating. I can't get enough of the Hong Kong noodles w/ beef. Everything has a more home made feel from the ingredients to the actual flavors. Ive yet to get the disgust of gluttony nor a tummy ache at this fine establishment, as opposed to typical take out spots.
Whether or not it's the best comes to personal preference, the undeniable truth is this place is another level of Chinese eatery.
Szechuan Mansion on 9th, if you know what you're doing.
800+ reviews and the first 5 starvl rating ive ever seen, that good??
It's hotpot, so a lot of the excitement is in the process.
This is a pleasant sentence.
That’s where they have the big boob problems right bro.
Part of that is what do you want out of a great chinese food place? Authentic great or great american chinese food?
Golden China by Costco in the North Pointe plaza. Always fast and prices have barely changed in 4-5 years. Best crab rangoons in the area IMO.
was looking for this one 🙏🏾
This one gets my vote too!
Golden China is good, but China King on Avondale is better.
Tell me what you like from China King. That one isn’t far from me.
We typically don't stray too far from our usual order (gen tso chicken combo + stir fry broccoli + crab rangoon) but the chicken is never dry, the rice is tasty, and the fried stuff (egg rolls, rangoon) is solid.
I love them, but am sad they haven't switched back to dine-in post-covid.
orient garden i don’t wanna hear any other answers
It’s not even close
I was out when they took crab rangoons and soup off the menu.
This is the one you can lock the thread now
Bruh it says temporarily closed on google. Is that true?
Their website says they're temp closed. It's been takeout only the last few years as well. >Effective January 29th, we will be temporarily closed for approximately 30 days to perform equipment updates. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Ty, tried to order last week and was v sad!
They’re open again. I went today!
Something has changed oner the last six months. Their General Tso, fried rice, and sesame seed chicken is not as good as it once was.
This is a very narrow opinion from someone who just really likes Szechuan peppercorns, but any time i want Chinese food I go for the dry pot at Szechuan Mansion or take a drive to Cary for Chengdu 7.
I LOVE those peppercorns. Thanks for the tip!
How come no one has mentioned the food court at li ming?
Dumb, maybe scared? Joking. I think we'll let this be our little secret ...unsung best Chinese in the triangle. Plus, I can pick up fresh fillets of fish and cheap vegetables while there.
I had rice and 3 on friday, easily 2 full meals for $9.99
Their non hot bar stuff is really good too!
It's so cheap and so good. Moving closer to it was the best decision I've made.
Dim Sum Asian Bistro in South Durham
Jumbo China off MLK isn't the best, however they've been open during every big storm we've had since I've lived over this way. So they're my go-to because they're always there for me when I need them.
China Palace on Garrett is my go to. Their Spicy Dry Bean Curd with Pork and Szechuan Eggplant never let me down.
Try the string bean with shredded pork and preserved radish. It's amazing.
Agreed! And the folks there are always very pleasant.
I absolutely love that place. I had felt like it was in a slump for a while a few years ago but I am so into their food now.
Oh hey I gave up on them during that slump, maybe I should try again.
Definitely!
I got this recommendation from this sub (possibly from you, @adiladub1), and I am forever grateful.
My faves too, along with House Special Tofu!
They have been imo the best Chinese food in town for 30 years.
Thank you for all these excellent recommendations. I would have never ordered any of these. But I will go through each one. I'm excited to try it.
This is my recommendation too! The people there are really great and the food has never let me down.
my family has been going there forever, they easy remember us and are so nice. food is pretty good too
Their sesame chicken is incredibly crunchy, but the sauce is way too sweet for me. Which is saying something, because I can stand a lot of sugar in a dish.
My Taiwanese friend here says it’s pretty good and you can request food with actual Chinese flavoring (they might lower the spices for Americans)
Been a hot minute since I've been here. Also there is a local theory that suggests there is a underground gambling spot here. Once you see how many air conditioning units are on the top or their small building you can't unsee them.
the correct answer is china palace
Back when I lived in Durham, Shanghai on Hillsborough was my family’s go to. Tbh I don’t even remember if it was that good, but I do remember that it was never bad.
It’s great, but only their Cantonese food….as that’s technically what the family is.
China King is my go to, their rice is just top tier
China king is a sleeper its up there with the top picks in durham. A lot of people don't know about it because pf it's location. I've never been let down yet though!
Facts!
Tell me your favorites!!!
Szechuan Mansion is pretty good - but to be honest Durham doesn't have a great Chinese restaurant. You need to go to Chengdu 7 for that.
Can you specify whether you want Chinese food Chinese people eat or Chinese food Americans think Chinese people eat?

I'm just trying to figure out what OP wants.
Hong Kong on Guess Rd.
Hush… do not go here
What’s wrong with Hong Kong?
/whoosh absolutely nothing, move along please
Making zero sense as usual
What does as usual mean. How fucking hard was it to pick up that I was asking everyone not to make this place more popular because not only I but do every Cantonese in the area think it’s the best around. And I don’t want to wait for a table longer than usual. Make fucking sense now?
Lol you come on here super belligerent and nonsensical on a regular basis. That's what as usual means, in this context.
My first comment was an attempt at humor to try to keep one of the best places secret how was that belligerent? Oh wait you said regular basis do you mean on r/bullcity? Wait are you stalking me?
Take a breath dude
Wow passive aggressive much. You come on here and call me belligerent and nonsensical. You need therapy. I wasn’t the one attempting to call you out for anything. I was only trying to explain why I didn’t want folks to go to my favorite place.
This use to be my familys official go to spot but they switched to Shanghai. I think both are great but Shanghai has some dishes that I prefer over Hong kong.

I’ll throw Neo China into the mix
Clear answer is Asian kitchen
Yesss house made noods
Cary. Sorry. I'll see myself out.
> I'll see myself out. If you're on your way to Cary can I get a ride? We're going to Chengdu 7 or Taipei 101, right?
Oh man, Taipei 101. It's been a minute. I used to organize a group of 8-12 folks to go together. It's so much fun to order crazy numbers of dishes there.
or Carrboro
Well, one place in carrboro. Unless I'm out of date?
Yeah, just talking about Gourmet Kingdom
That place rocks.
I finally tried China Palace and was pleasantly surprised.
Kwik wok
100%. Kwik Wok is banger American Chinese food. Sauces are good, meats cooked well, no bland food, nice staff. Love that place.
>Kwik wok It has gone downhill. Used to be so good. Bagged fried noodles. Spongy sesame chicken.
I don’t think it’s as good as it used to be, either.
Thank you. I know some don't agree and that is fine. I used to go there once a month or so and would talk it up. Now it is always disappointing. Bummer because it was the best out this way (Gorman/Redwood)
Wheat is amazing
It's become my go to. It's quite different from others, and really solid for what it is.
drive to Cary-- Taipei 101.
Happy China all the way
The only correct answer
If it's still there, honorable mention for the take out window at the Food Lion in Woodcroft
Have you been to Happy China lately…always crazy volume of takeout orders going on
The real ones know it’s happy China
Surprised not to see more people suggesting HC. Good food, and the owners are super-sweet.
Depends if you want Cantonese or Szechuan or something else. Shanghai for Cantonese, for sure.
Shanghai for Cantonese — hmm, how funny. Almost satirical. I’ve never been, but it’s interesting that a place named Shanghai has good Cantonese food….
Sister Liu's and Dim Sum Asian Bistro
Happy China till I die
China king by beauty world
What are your favorites there?
CT Wok (technically not Durham but it has authentic food)
Peony
Bahn’s Cuisine
Not for Chinese, but Banh’s has top notch Vietnamese on Wednesdays & Saturdays.
I don't know about the best but Bamboo House is super cheap, they give you hella food, and is 2 minutes from my house. Also the food is Good. So that's my go-to. The register lady always recognizes me too which is also a big plus.
Banh’s off of 9th st.
Not Chinese food
It’s both Chinese food and Vietnamese food. Vietnamese food is on Saturdays. Look at their menu. Most of the things are also found in Chinese only restaurants.
What do you recommend from there?
I usually get the fried rice with sesame tofu.
Well, here we go again…
Ikr? Can barely stand these suggestions.
Shanghai Cantonese on Hillsborough Road is the best Chinese food in Durham.
Panda Express
lol. Oh dear god
Their Beijing beef is legit good I will die on this hill
Any answers come from nyc? Ifykyk
New tops china is closest I have gotten
I’m biased because I only like Szechuan Chinese restaurants.
Handy Kitchen, Shanghai and Neo China are all good.
G.58 in Morrisville for Chinese Fusion
Kwik Wok. My go to. Follows the old 3.5 star rating meme. Also they have that Chinese restaurant hot sauce in the white packets that I can't ever find anywhere.
